INTO THE HEART OF DARKNESS

The whole universe is out to kill Zaha Sanko and take his bones, thanks to a pesky rumor that whoever takes them will receive their heart’s desire. Sanko himself doesn’t have a clue what’s going on with all that, but the answers maybe have something to do with a mysterious thing called “Zolar,” which appears when “certain conditions are fulfilled.” Pretty cryptic, but Sanko’s buddy Damemaru thinks he can solve the mystery with the tools in his lab. So they head for the planet where Damemaru parked his ship–only to find that everything and everyone there has vanished, except for an ominous castle…

Q Hayashida (林田球, Hayashida Kyu) is a manga author from Tokyo.
Hayashida studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has discussed her childhood and artistic inspirations in interviews but maintains a high level of privacy about her personal life, to the point that her true name and face are unknown.
Hayashida's first major manga was Maken X Another (1999-2001), a comic book adaptation of a video game.
Her most famous work is the 23-volumes long Dorohedoro (2000-2018). It was originally serialised in the alternative manga magazine 'Monthly Ikki', but it was later moved to 'Hibana' when Ikki ceased publication, and finally transferred to 'Monthly Shōnen Sunday'. Dorohedoro has been partially adapted into an anime on Netflix in 2018.
Hayashida's most recent manga series Dai Dark began serialisation in 2019 in the pages of Monthly Shōnen Sunday.

It might not hold the same charm as the first volumes, but this is still a fun series, in such a weird way... Like the action tends to be a bit confusing and some times repetitive, and there is little to zero progress in the actual plotline, but I feel kind of strangely attached to these characters nonetheless.

The Four Little Sh*ts continue their search for Damemaru’s ship on the mysteriously empty savage planet. Answers, bones, and more chaos ahead!

there is nothing funnier than the characters that are skeletons emitting emotion
and asking Damemaru WHAT ARE YOU

This story is fun so far. I think the major difference that stands out between 'Dorohedoro' and this is the pacing. This volume really didn't progress the story too much but it fleshed things out longer. 'Dorohedoro' is rapid compared to this.
Looking forward to volume 9!

This one's still ongoing, and so my feelings may change as the story nears and/or reaches its conclusion! I definitely like this offering from Q Hayashida, but I don't know if it hits the same as Dorohedoro. Dorohedoro felt more visceral, the drawings felt sharper, and the story felt more structured. These thoughts could have something to do with the exponentially increasing chaos level and the "pieces falling together" aspect of the last 50ish chapters of Dorohedoro, and maybe Dai Dark just needs more time to bubble over into that explosion of batshit craziness...we will see...

Q. Hayashida is a master of mixing comedy with the grotesque.

I love you, lil guy.
