History comes alive in this deeply researched book. It's an account of a murder of a young woman in 1877 that the Baltimore Sun called "One of the most revolting murders in the annals of crime." Like a great detective, Booker has uncovered all of the important details. And, as an excellent writer, has them unfold as compelling drama. A short book with a big wallop.
This is the second book I have read By Carol Booker. Apparently, she is a Southern Maryland History buff. The first was The Water's Wife. I like to read about the local area, but I find Ms. McCabe's books to be rather dry She has written several others. I might even have purchased some, but this shall be my last one to read.
