Warrant Officer Sonja Dormoira and the members of Fae Team Six thought they were on a standard mission for the US Marine Corps.
They were wrong.
Tasked with entering the dream realm to discover who was using the magical mirror of Nostradamus to blackmail the rich and powerful, Sonja and the other members of Fae Team Six found more than they bargained for.
Something was erasing the fae from history.
With only their guns and guts to sustain them while they navigated the hostile realm of dreams, Sonja and her team must figure out a way to slam shut the magical door that leads home.
Peter got locked in a bookstore as a child and has been reading his way to freedom ever since.
His first tales developed from Dungeons & Dragons campaigns that never got played, and watching Babylon 5 on repeat. After having several dozen short stories published through various publishers, Peter has switched to longer forms of writing.
The science fiction “Consensus” novels depict one family’s struggle in the face of alien invasion, and the “Vol’kris Chronicles” are a series of standalone tales that explore humanity’s misadventures in a world ruled by insects.
This book is heavy on the action and does not let up.
Reflections follows elf Sonja Dormoira, commanding officer of Fae Team Six, a special ops team of the US Marines. Her unruly crew has been sent on a dangerous mission with inadequate prep or information to obtain a magical portal/ talisman the government doesn't seem to know much about. Things go sideways instantly, which isn't surprising since they're basically told to jump off the edge of the map because of reasons.
The setting is modern Earth, with the caveat that humans share space with a familiar D&D-roster of magical beings. We get very little backstory, the writing is sleek in that regard, so I'm curious how the sequels will unfold the history of human-fae relations. We can tell it's not great - most fae appear to live in isolated reserves and everyone we see in the Real World is either destitute or scraping in minimum wage in some demeaning profession - but we don't know why this is the case or how long it's been that way. Or why the beings with magic didn't obliterate the insolent monkeys 100,000 years ago, once they got a look at what jerks we are. The one detail I felt sure about by the story's end is that these are important questions: not all fae peoples are okay with being second rate. Obviously I am Very Interested to know more about a certain antagonist-positioned elf (hint).
I don't want to spoil the fun, so it's hard to know how to address what was to me the most compelling part of the story: the... villain? Thing? Entity? In any case, what the squad spends most of the book desperately trying to deal with and survive was FABULOUSLY scary, relentless, and opaque.
The action is nonstop, the ending blunt: the mission is finished but the squad doesn't have answers. Just a bunch of questions they didn't know to ask before they almost got eaten by WHAT EVEN?! It left me hungry for a sequel.
This fantasy novel, set in a modern, Earth-like world where fae and supernatural beings live in reserve-style settlements under human control, delivers an exciting blend of action, mystery, and magic, all in a gritty dystopian world. All my favourite tropes are here, including found family, a quest, and an enemies-to-lovers storyline, complete with a meet-cute in the middle of a battle where the characters are fighting on opposite sides. The protagonist, Sonja, is fierce and independent, reminding me of a Sarah J. Maas-style heroine. The action/ fight/battle scenes are well-written and exciting without drifting into overly indulgent descriptions that would slow the pace. At times, this book feels almost like an episode of a binge-worthy SyFy show. While romance isn’t the main focus, there are hints of a relationship for Sonja that adds a little something but no spice. Her dynamic with a certain fae character is poised to develop into an enemies-to-lovers situation, though it doesn’t fully unfold here. I found myself wishing for more of this subplot earlier in the story. But then again, I do love a bit of Romantasy.
This story is an exciting ride! Fae Team Six is sent to the dream realm to discover who is blackmailing the powerful members of society. What they discover is that someone is bent on erasing the fae. Warrant Officer Sonja Dormoira is a strong character who leads with her head and her heart. She cares for those under her command, but it doesn't get in the way of her being one tough elf. Rich in excitement and description, Reflections of Fractured Dreams will leave you wanting more stories about Fae Team Six.
I received this novel as an ARC. While military action books are not what I would normally be attracted to, I am pleased that this one fell into my hands. It captured my interest right away and drew me in to an imaginative world I would otherwise have missed out on. My favorite things about it are the cast of (mostly) fae main characters which the author cleverly introduces to the reader so that there is no confusion about who is who and what their roles are when we get into the action—of which there is a lot! I loved the weird richness of the Dream Realm. So interesting and vivid. And scary. Kudos to the author for creating such a unique world and subworld. Lastly, Sonja, our protagonist, is the perfect blend of compassionate and hard ass! Well done!
Fae Team Six are a military group charged with defending humanity from the supernatural. It grabbed me from the opening page. Sonja is an interesting lead character with enough set-up here that you know will come back in later books. The team all have distinct personalities and the action is detailed without seeming overly written. The idea of an urban fantasy military team felt fresh but also had a familiarity to it, I enjoyed that the team was already established and the book trusted the reader to find themselves in the middle of the action and keep up.
What a wild romping ride with Fae Team Six on their adventures through, well, you'd have to read it to believe it really. Seriously, a fun, fast-paced jaunt that was hard to put down. The action never lets up once it starts and it'll keep you going for more.
There is nothing I enjoy more than stories that come from the grittiness of revealing their darkness, their nastiness beneath.
Some of the darkness in the novel comes from how most humans treat the Fae on Earth. Whether elf, brownie, ogre or others, they’re treated poorly at best. Right at the outset, the action is fast-paced and the characters are great. The other darkness is drawn forth by those who are trying to draw it into our realm.
Warrant Officer Sonja is coming off of a short leave and jumping right back into the thick of things leading her Fae team on a dangerous mission to seek out whoever is making use of Nostradamus’ magical mirror.
The novel goes beyond a great team of characters fighting a darker force. Through Sonja’s eyes we get to see the in-depth personalities of all her team members. There are moments that made me laugh out loud when the quirkiness of her and her team come out.
The novel is very well written and I cannot wait for the next books to come out. I wish the story told me more at the end, but I’m being greedy and wanted to keep reading.
A grand adventure with great characters!
The author kindly offered me an ARC copy to read. My honest review is I want to pre-order all the books in the series right now.
Fae Team Six pulls together a team with different magical abilities that they use to complete their missions - and, wow, I am so into this whole concept!
In this, the first book in the series, we meet the Fae Team Six leader, Sonja, coming off leave spent with her merman-beau and heading back into the proverbial trenches to find a creepy mirror wreaking havoc with reality. It's a great read as the team pulls together with their own special, Fae abilities, and we learn the little idiosyncrasies of each team member and their internal dynamics. It's like Dresden Files meets the A-Team meets Throne of Glass (can't say I ever expected to write that sentence, haha). Give it a shot, you'll love it!
If I could I would give this 4.5 stars, I enjoyed it enough that I want to read more! It felt a little like there should be a prequel about how the team came together, since this book starts with a team that the members have all settled into their roles and relationships. Then the adventure begins! an innovative world that seems contemporary, but has ghettos for the fae, bringing to mind Native American or Apartheid settlements. Also features an unusual enemy, that gave me the creeps, and another foe, more normal but not the good guys... but there's the impression of more to come in that story. I look forward to reading more in the series.
The author graciously offered me an ARC copy to read. Reflections of Fractured Dreams is full of action for the Fae team. If you enjoy bullets, drama, and portal fantasies, this is a super book. Sonja, the female lead is a strong well written character as are the other members of the team. The book is full of action and excitement but not deep meanings or life lessons. For me this book was a fun read. The creatures were creative and the world interesting but I prefer books with a more meaningful message than find the bad guys and save the world. For the style and genre, this is a 5 star read.
