Very Short Introductions #414

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Very Short Introduction

Rate this book
Corporate social responsibility has been defined as "the responsibility of enterprises for their impacts on society." Is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) just window dressing or is it a contradiction in terms? In this Very Short Introduction , Jeremy Moon shows that CSR holds much more value than it first appears, and examines how it has come of age in recent years. Illustrating the sorts of CSR investments companies make, the ways in which they practice CSR, and the challenges this brings, Moon considers how the principles migrated from their US roots to become a global business phenomenon. Exploring the place of CSR in different economic, social, political, and managerial contexts, this short guide considers the many positives, but also challenges, that CSR can present for companies, societies, and governments worldwide.

This is as advertised. A very short introduction to CSR. It hits the main issues and does a good job of summarizing a complex and expansive field and includes the entire world - not just focusing on US or UK or even EU views of CSR, which a lot of other books tend to do. For that reason I decided to give it three stars. That said, there is only so much detail that you can cover in something only 140 pages long. This book serves as a good snapshot of the field but isn't focused on giving any close up shots.

An accessible text that mixes dense, technical terms with many lucid descriptions and examples. I would highly recommend for those interested in CSR that are looking for a more detailed definition. I do wish some of the research was updated, but for the most part it makes reading the business section of the newspaper more accessible/clear in reference to the terms found herein.

I can't help but think that 'corporate social responsibility' just means 'ethics applied to the world of business', and it strikes me that what is missing from the whole field is any reflection whatsoever on the thousands of years of thinking about The Right Thing To Do, or even awareness of its existence. Instead it consists of vague thoughts translated into business-babble, resulting in books like this one which use - apparently with a straight face - words like 'operationalization' (no, seriously - page 60).

Never mind.

Chapter 1: An idea whose time has come
Chapter 2: The company level
Chapter 3: National and international developments
Chapter 4: The socialization of markets
Chapter 5: CSR and new governance
Chapter 6: Critical perspectives
Chapter 7: Prospects and reflections
