Miles Alcott has always felt a bit like a fish out of water his whole he never made the Olympics as a gymnast, his parkour career wasn’t really taking off, and he didn’t have a tightly knit group of family and friends he could rely on through thick and thin.
Things seemed to get worse when he was transported to Thornwallace, a fantastical city from another place and time where life seems permanently frozen in a harsh early industrial era, crime and poverty run rampant, and magic lies hidden beneath the surface. The humans, elves, dwarves, and even more exotic creatures live hardscrabble lives and try to eek out survival in an unforgiving city.
Nothing in Miles’ life in America prepared him to last long in this place, but when he falls in with a guild of thieves, pickpockets, con artists, safe-crackers, and masters of disguise, he finds out that his athletic skills are perfectly suited to being the greatest cat burglar Thornwallace has ever seen.
With the money, power, and women he’ll get from being a master thief, Miles will find what he’s always been searching a family who have each others’ backs no matter how hard the obstacles they face become.
Definitely a fun and exciting read. A Victorian era style society on the cusp of industrial revolution, ruled by the high society of rich and valid, makes for an interesting setting when Miles finds himself in the middle of a parkour stunt before being transported to this fantasy world and falling in with a guild of thieves who could use his talents.
Definitely love the idea of stealing from the rich, especially ones as cruel and dumb as those in Thornwallace. My only concern is that for thieves... They weren't exactly stealthy with the main jobs/heists.
Not all jobs can be done perfectly, but as the characters skills grow, sometimes stealing without being caught is just as good as a spectacle in a newspaper.
Based on previous reviews I really thought this would be a book for me as it ticked all my boxes genre wise, but alas it could never catch my interest and the world building that had all going for it was lackluster at best. Humans are described as giants in comparison to the elfs and dwarfs but still everything seems in proportion to the humans even in the parts where only creatures dwell. I have liked the author’s other works so give an additional star based on that but will not buy any more in this series if published.
We are being held for ransom. He won't start writing until he gets 300 likes. Hopefully we never see a sequel. Not sure why I finished reading it. Loved the Title and the cover. Epilogue gets that second star. It was quite well done. Everybody is safe we can leave the story to breath and we have identified problems for the next book. (Shudders)
This could be really interesting. Everyone needs to read and review it so we can make it to 300 reviews ASAP. Only issue was every word that had "ken" in it replaced the "k" with "D" for instance "broDen" instead of broken
Quit different from my usual fair, steampunk with no appreciable magic other than the portal between worlds to establish the MC. But well written and entertaining. Lots of plot other than simple sexual encounters and the very interesting Pip in the last half. Enjoyable.
A good introductory book for this new series of an unusual circumstance. There is plenty of action, adventure, mystery, suspense, humor, terror, violence, and romance.
