Shadows Ascend by B.K. Cavaleri
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

This second book in the Remnant Archives trilogy picked up right where book 1 left off. One thing I loved about book 1 was the under (sea) and land worlds and book 2 continues the theme of unique settings by beginning in the underworld.

Emon is a great book boyfriend and Remnant becomes an even stronger FMC in this installment. I love their banter and relationship with some spiciness throughout the book. Similar to book 1, a TON happens in the latter part of the book. The cliffhanger ending had me so excited for book 3 that I need it yesterday!

Shadows Ascend picks up immediately after the events in book 1 Shadows Lost and sooo much happens in this one.

We get more of our sweet girl Riella who I absolutely love ❤️ Remnant and Emon have the weight of the world on their shoulders and will do anything to protect those they hold dear. The love they have for each other can be felt through the pages 🥰

As a romantasy girlie I’m big on world building and B.K. did a great job at bringing this world to life. With the introduction of new characters, a deeper dive into others, and a visit to the underworld I was sat

Be prepared book 2 does end on a cliffhanger that will you screaming

May I suggest you start this book immediately following Shadows Lost: Remnant Archives Book 1 as book 2 jumps straight back in without passing go or collecting two hundred dollars! This book will forever be etched on my heart marking the place it tore out. I could not sit still while reading this book. I laughed, I cried, I even yelled at the characters, and all the while I had to keep turning the pages; I was held captive by this story.

In Shadows Ascend we join Emon, Remnant, and Riella on their journey through the land of the dead. I was a little hesitant at first that Riella was going to be a main character this time around as I'm not usually a huge fan of children in books. They are typically annoying, get in the way, and overall do not add much to the story. Riella steals the whole damn show and will steal your heart in the process. Her innocence is such a stark contrast to her parents and her awe of the world around her makes you as the reader stop to truly enjoy what B. K. Cavaleri is trying to show you. But she truly won me over with her fierce determination and ability to charm even the worst of characters. Her strength and determination are what make her my favorite; she is the perfect combination of her parents. The sweet little charmer collecting odd and lost souls with a willingness to protect what is hers despite her fears. ⁣

This book showcases another side to Emon and Remnant. We get to see them navigate life as lovers and as parents all while trying to maintain their own identities. As a new parent, this hit home for me as I am currently navigating those same tough waters. I loved Remnant in book one but understood her so much more in this book as many of her struggles reminded me of my own. This book also builds on their relationship; Emon believes that Remnant hung the moon and the stars and he supports her despite his misgivings about some of the situations. Remnant continues to show her growth in how she leans on Emon and needs him for support; knowing that together there is nothing they can't accomplish. These two are goals and I will stand for nothing less than their everlasting happiness.

I maintain that B.K. Cavaleri is a once-in-a-lifetime author and the sky is the limit for her. Her writing is bar none, the best I have ever read. Her ability to pull you so deeply into the story that you don't recognize reality anymore is amazing. She has an amazing ability to take you to the brink of despair and just before you think you can't go forward she gives you hope. She can elicit whatever emotions she wants from her readers with just a few well-placed sentences and draws you back in. Be careful as she does play the reader's emotions like a yo-yo but it is completely worth the price of admission. May I suggest you come prepared with tissues, snacks, a blanket, and whatever safety object you own (for me it was my teddy bear). You will need them!

The last thing I will leave you with is to "watch out for that last step, it's a doozy". Happy Reading!

Remnant and Emon's story has only just begun. And I can't wait to see where it leads next.

I stand by that. And I stand by the love I have for this series: a love that keeps expanding, even as each book hurts me more than the last. Yet I welcome the pain and the hurt, because they show just how invested I am in these characters and their journeys. They reveal how deeply the narration transcends the page and how it continues to envelop us in shadows, swallowing us whole.

Remnant and Emon's story is far from over; their road ahead filled with dangers. But even amidst all the suffering and uncertainty, one thing prevails: love. Love and utter devotion. The one they feel towards one another and towards Riella. Yes, their road ahead is dangerous. And with their child in the midst? Everything multiplies a thousandfold.

Riella is with them, and at times, I forget she is still just a child. An incredibly powerful one, yes. But a child nonetheless. Did I wish there was another way for them, one where Riella was kept somewhere safe and far away? Yes and no. Yes, because it might have been safer. No, because there is no place safer for her than beside two people who love her above all else. Witnessing the bond between the three of them grow and strengthen was a sight for sore eyes.

Their little family will eventually overcome it all and emerge victorious, I'm certain of it. But there is still so much left to do. So much to feel. To mourn. To celebrate. To live.

The ending gutted me. I sobbed. I stared at nothing. But there is still hope. And I will hold on to that hope until my last breath.

I love when books pick up where they left off, and this one done just that. Book 2s theme? Underworld 😈 There are death realms, ancient magic, and raw truths of redemption. The emotional rollercoaster, and captivation this book takes its reader on is unmatched. In this book we see character growth (navigate as parents, and still lovers). This story encapsulates you, pacing is on point, and the author has the ability to navigate all emotions in a way you won't want to out the book down. Love romantasy? found family? high stakes quests? fae magic? This book is for you! There is a cliffhanger, but good news! Book 3 comes out soon!

This series has quickly become one of my favourites of all time. I am surprised that more people aren’t talking about this one because it is criminally under fucking hyped. If I could give it more stars I would. I loved every minute of this book and I can’t wait to see more of the story!! The relationship between the main characters is perfection. Riella is the fucking cutest, I can hardly deal. Thank you for writing this story.

Shadows Ascend was even more devastating than Shadows Lost. The characters I loathe, the characters I love, have all wrecked me in new and unique ways. I’m actually convinced at this point that B.K. thrives off of our suffering.

The begging of this book is definitely a slow burn. I had to push through some of the start, but it was absolutely worth it all by the time I finished. So much happens at about the 50% mark and doesn’t really stop happening from then on. The plot and character arcs truly shine and grow.

Overall, I loved this book as much as the first and am enjoying making my way through the series. There were a few times that I cringed at them having a child in the middle of it all, but she is a beautiful character. I typically don’t love the pregnancy or “found child” trope, but I think B.K. did a really good job of how she wrote it. So, if you’re like me and think that’s a deal breaker for this book, I promise it isn’t.

I had one truly fleeting moment of utter happiness and joy at the very end. Only for it to be snuffed out like Bane’s fire. Be prepared to have it all given to you only to be ripped away.

✨Shadows Ascend✨

Back with Remnant and Emon, we begin book two right where we left off! But now we are no longer traveling worlds of land and sea, but instead the many levels of the underworlds.

The stakes are super high and the action (as usual) is there intwined with the witty banter we all love from Bri. We get to see bonds grow, hearts tested, and fates challenged alongside beasts and battles of all sorts!

Emon is still book boyfriend goals and seeing Rem embrace her softer edges is beautiful. This book was hard because it had so many parts that wrenched your heart, but was also so good and never left you wanting. Bri is a master at creating fun worlds and feisty retorts.

Tropes you may find in SA are bonded mates, morally grey characters, shifters and shadow fae, shadow mommy FMC, burnt cinnamon roll shifter daddy, magical beasts, deeper world building and magic characteristics, forced proximity, medium spice and a mean cliffhanger.

I’m on the edge of my seat for book three!! Thank you so much for letting me read this gifted arc. It is so unique!

Shadows Ascend follows Remnant Dark, her fated mate Emon, their daughter Riella, and their found family of friends as they are thrust into the depths of Sheol, the realm of the dead, the afterlife for all of Faerie’s creations. Within the depths of the underworld they encounter many trials and tribulations along the way that will test them further than anything they’ve ever experienced. But Remnant refuses to let anything stand in her way, be it beasts, demons, or even gods. Will Remnant be able to reconcile the failures of her past while saving her people and the ones she loves most? Shadows Ascend was most certainly a story centered around redemption, courage, and the sheer power of love. Remnant overcomes so much in this story, really harnessing inner strength she didn’t realize she had. Her fierceness shines bright in this one and if you haven’t already fallen in love with her character in the first book, there is no way you cannot fall in love with her in book two. Along with Remnant, we also see that same fierce feminine strength of her “maedere” begin to shine bright in young Riella as well, and we begin to see the beginnings of her transformation into a Fae with more promise than the world is ready for. We also have Emon, who never disappoints when it comes to being just what Remnant needs to remind her of who she is and the strength she carries. He is consistent in his yearning and love for Remnant to always have her back and now Riella’s as well; he truly embodies the quote, “A King is nothing without his Queen.” Throughout the story we are also introduced to many colorful (mostly morally grey) characters who help shift and shape the story in ways I didn’t see coming adding to the suspense and thrill of it all. This story was packed with action, action, action (in more than one way) and it did not disappoint. All the areas of Sheol were vivid, the beasts were intriguing, and the plot was powerful. Author B.K. Cavaleri delivered a blow to my heart with this one, but in a way that leaves me wanting more! Would recommend over and over again!

B.K. Cavaleri delivers a darkly mesmerizing sequel with Shadows Ascend—a sweeping, soul-shattering journey through death realms, ancient magics, and the raw edges of redemption. This book grabs you by the heart from the first page and doesn’t let go.

Remnant Ezra Solaire Dark is a force to be reckoned with—vulnerable and vengeful, haunted yet hopeful. As the last shadow fae, she carries the weight of her people’s destruction and now must face the impossible: saving not just Faerie, but the very souls trapped beyond the veil. The worldbuilding is richly layered and otherworldly, plunging readers into an underworld filled with gods, demons, and a chilling atmosphere that pulses with danger.

Emon, her soulmate and counterpart, is equally compelling. His unwavering loyalty and internal struggle add depth to the romance, grounding the epic stakes in a deeply personal love story. Their bond is intense and soul-deep, and Cavaleri masterfully explores the ways trauma and duty can test even the strongest connection.

The writing is lyrical and immersive, balancing action with emotional introspection. Themes of sacrifice, identity, grief, and legacy are woven tightly into every chapter. The plot twists are bold, and the pacing is relentless—never sacrificing character growth for spectacle, even as the story barrels toward a heartbreaking, breathtaking finale.

Shadows Ascend is the kind of book that lingers long after the last page—a beautifully brutal tale of love forged in darkness and power reclaimed through pain.

If you love epic romantasy with soulmates, fae magic, found family, and high-stakes quests into the underworld, this is your next obsession.

Well, my little heart I love this series. Oh, how much I love it.

Shadows Ascend picks up right where Shadows Lost left off, and it brings all the feels. I cried, laughed, wanted to throw my Kindle through the door, swooned but the one thing I absolutely couldn’t do was put it down.

B.K. Cavaleri’s storytelling completely sucks you in and drags you along for a wild, emotional ride. We follow our beloved Remnant, Emon, their little Riella, and our favorite found family into the depths of Sheol.

Let me tell you, Remnant Ezra Solaire Dark is a force to be reckoned with. She’s vulnerable, vengeful, fiercely strong, and such an incredible mother. Emon oh, my lovely shifter always stands beside Rem, loyal and unbreakable. Their bond is soul-deep, burning like an inferno. His struggles broke my heart, and their connection made me ache in the best way. And little Riella? That girl stole my heart. Seeing her and the family’s interactions felt so genuine and heartwarming truly the core of this story.

I won’t spoil anything (because trust me, you want to experience it yourself), but let me ask you this:
Do you love an epic romantasy filled with love that can withstand anything? A found family who would go to the ends of the world for each other? Then babes, this one has your name on it.

Now, let’s talk about the writing because, wow. B.K. Cavaleri has a way with words that few authors can match. Her world-building is lush and immersive, the pacing is a beast (chef’s kiss), and the story itself? Absolutely perfect.

And that ending? Holy. Shit. CRAZY.
Like, “leave me alone for days, I need to read the next one immediately” crazy.

“A hungry power that threatens all existence.
A realm where death is the only way.
A shadow that quivers, a shifter that flickers.
A well of souls they need to brave.”

OMG! Once again, I am blown away by how brilliantly written this dark fantasy romance story is. We pick up right where book one left us, and it’s a fast paced, action packed, emotionally heart-wrenching race to another cliffhanger of an ending!

The imagery and world building continues to be creative, descriptive and unique. Plus, the new characters and the old one's continue to keep me in a chokehold the whole way through.

Remnant continues to get stronger and stronger as her journey continues. Her connection and love for Emon and Riella only grows fiercer, and she will do everything in her power to protect the two most important people in her life.

The banter was filled with hilarious jabs, jokes and sarcasm that kept me laughing, but there were also some very emotional moments that had me in tears too. And the spice – HOLY CRAP – the spice was incredibly spicy and so damn HOT!! Remnant and Emon lit up the pages and my panties!

There were so many incredible moments in this story, but there were also so many twists and turns that I had no idea what was going to happen. I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with anxiety and needing to pick my jaw up off the floor right to the very end.

I can’t wait to read the final book in this amazing trilogy. It's definitely going to be one hell of an explosive conclusion.

The second book in the Remnant Archives series started off right when the first one ended.

"She is not meant to be controlled,"...
"She is meant to be unleashed."

It was much more emotional than the first book and I loved every second of it, even though it freaking HURT!

"You leashed your soul to the darkness Emon, you belong to the light. You are my light."...
"Not just the darkness my love... it is your darkness. The only place where my light can shine."

I love that we got to see a new part of the unique world the author created. The story is set in the underworld where each part has a different ruler and politics.

"I had hoped our bond and our truths would have set her free of her paralyzing panic attacks, but hope... goddess hope was a f*cking bitch that never did a single damn thing for me or any of us. And because of that... the past still stalked us, a cruel haunting that would never go away."

The relationship between Remnant and Emon only grew stronger and it was so beautiful to see more of them together. I missed some of my favorite side characters but also found some new favorites! I absolutely loved Zazion and I hope he'll make an appearence in the third book!

That ending... I'm still not okay and I need book three to heal me, but I have a feeling it will only hurt more. 😭

Honestly, I liked the first book more.

I’m not one to complain about minor writing/editing slip-ups, but this books is more unrefined than the first one.

The over the top infatuation with each other, not being able to simply exist in each other’s presence without obsessing and lusting every waking moment is a turnoff. Some other issues particularly with world building wording that felt forced kinda lost me tbh…

Though, my biggest issue was Riella’s character development. Yes, her lineage is not that of a human child, BUT she’s still only 7. Without giving too much away, it just doesn’t fit the image of a child…Maybe just hits closer to home bc my youngest is 9 and I just can’t fathom a child of only 7 years to possess the abilities she’s given - comprehension wise, problem solving skills wise, emotional maturity wise… just doesn’t make sense. Again, I have more to say, but I can’t get into it without spoilers and that’s just not my thing.

Anyway. I don’t feel as broken up about the cliffhanger?either, more so annoyed. Can’t say I didn’t see that coming, and honestly it’s kinda refreshing compared to their previous dynamic.

Also annoyed that the 3rd book isn’t available on kindle unlimited 😕 don’t really have any incentive atm to spend (more) money to continue reading this, and that’s unfortunate bc it bothers me to no end to leave things unfinished.

Here we gooooo!
As the second installment of the Remnant Archives, Shadows Ascend picks up right where we left off in Shadows Lost (duh!). So many questions are finally answered with Easter eggs and backstories beautifully written it’s no wonder I fell in love with second book as quickly as I did the first.
Personally I viewed Shadows Ascend as the bridge between the first and third novel (to be announced, hopefully?). However, don’t mistake ‘bridge’ as some sort of wishy washy Stephanie Meyer New Moon debacle (iykyk).
Shadows Ascend takes place in the depths of Hell. Where our beloved characters Emon, Remnant and Riella will face some of their biggest challenges yet (both emotionally and physically). As the series takes on a more serious note (as if it wasn’t before), Cavaleri artfully interweaves themes of humor, love and spice (because we gotta have that spice). While our thirst for answers are quenched, new ones arise. But, that’s the appeal of a good book is it not? If you weren’t considering this series before, it’s about high time you jumped on the bandwagon! For the sake of Faerie, pick up the d@mn book!

This book picks up right where the last one left off, with the world hanging in the balance, and our FMC and MMC being forced to make choices with their friends on how to save it!

This book has lots of action and adventure just like the first, but also plenty of flashbacks and reliving of deaths and the past that were so sad and painful to go through and for the FMC to experience in the world of the dead. She must overcome and fully accept her powers and who she is and who her father is to come into herself and save her people.

This book had me hooked again right from the start, with plenty of twists and stomach dropping thrills that I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed seeing the FMC and MMC continue to grow as parents and in their bond together and doing everything they could to save their little family. I loved all the new creatures we got to meet and this new land to explore. There was quite a cliffhanger ending and I cannot wait for the next book! Overall my rating 4.6/5!

Thanks to the author for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!

So this is the second book in the Remnant Archives series and I love that it picked up from where the first book left off. I love when a book has a seamless transition from the previous book.

I loved how the world of the dead was described. This was definitely a journey that I enjoyed being a part of. I feel like the author knew exactly what we wanted when we read this because in this book some of the questions I had from book one were answered.

You know that question that says ... who's your daddy? Will I have the answer ... Emon!!!!! The relationship with Remnant was very genuine and heartfelt. This has quickly become one of my favorite series that I have read so far this year.

Ezra and Emon’s journey continues as they fight to save Faerie from the darkness. Ezra finally comes face-to-face with her father and learns the truth of who she really is. She is also reunited with her mother and brother, who she believed were dead. To get her shadows back, she has to travel deep into Hell, to the Well of Souls. There is a price she has to pay to get her lilins back.

I loved reading any scenes with their daughter Rielle. She’s the perfect mix of sweet innocence and fierce protectiveness, showing us just how similar she is with Ezra and Emon. Watching her guard her parents as fiercely as they protect her was such a joy to read.

Even while traveling to Hell, Ezra and Emon’s witty banter keeps their relationship as spicy and entertaining as ever. But this book is heavier than the first as hard choices have to be made throughout their journey. This book has it all, love, sacrifice, and a shocking cliffhanger. Lucky for us, book 3 is coming out soon.

My thoughts:
I just finished reading book two of the Remnant Archives series and I'm still trying to process that ending. We dive back in where book one left off, entering the treacherous realm of Sheol, a land of death that's also home to Hell. The stakes are high and the action is non-stop. While we don't get as much of the found family dynamic that made book one so special, we do get to explore more of the family values that bind Remnant, Emon, and Riella together. Plus, we meet Remnant's brother and mother, along with some fascinating new characters. The addition of demons and hints of the seven deadly sins raises the stakes even higher. I'm loving how this installment expands the world-building - it's completely immersive. And the ending? Absolutely desperate for book three! For now, I will read Shadows of Air and Earth later this month which is a novella telling Xi and Riley story and I can’t wait to dive in.

The book was truly beautiful and poetic, with a seamless flow of the story from one page to the next. I cried, I laughed, I held onto hope. It's definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. You can tell the depth and emotion that was put into this story. Returning to this world felt like coming home, and the characters hold a special place in my heart. I deeply connect with them and their journey. The love that emon and rem share is honest and i loving seeing more of that sensual of rem this time around. I need you to experience this story for yourself. B.K.'s ability to transform the story into an absolute masterpiece showcases her remarkable versatility and talent as an author. The heart pounding cliffhanger will only leave you craving for more.

Wow book 2, the plot really thickened we had some new characters some old characters and just a whole lot going on.

We definitely were just building for book 3 and there was maybe some filler that didn’t need to be there but the relationship evolve between remnant and Daemon was nice, seeing more of the world was also great.

Spoiler from book 1 *** I really missed Ethereal and felt Elon’s chapters lost his normal spark without the cat.

Some parts of the plot popped in and out a little too quick but the ending really grips you for book 3 and to come back to it.

✨✨✨✨ 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Whew! Okay, where to start??! I am absolutely wrecked!

Shadows Ascend too the emotional stakes from Shadows Lost (book 1) and turned the volume alllll the way up. The tension? Perfect. The reveals? Gasp-worthy. The pacing? Had me flying through the pages and then instantly wishing I could slow down and savor the moment (but I can’t do that with this much action and intensity).

Remnant and Daemon’s bond is equal parts intense, heartbreaking, and tender. The emotional depth completely gutted me in both, books 1&2!! So excited for the next book! B.K. Cavalerie has truly outdone herself. This series is now living rent-free in my head -and my heart 💀🖤✨

Why, why I picked this song is because am I really okay... no... No I am not. Was I foolish to finish reading this when I only had few chapters to go... Yes okay I learnt my lesson the hard way. I'm stepping away from reading my books for a couple ole days.

My heart can't take it. I don't think I got anymore tissues left. I'm glad I'm an arc reader for the 3rd book or it would be a little longer for me.

I love my little Cub, Riella. Can I adopt her or be adopted by Remnant and Emon please. I love this family... I just love this series but you do love to torture and put my emotions into a blender and never recover.

💀 ARC REVIEW 💀

This is for the book besties that love to have their hearts ripped out of their chest and stomped on. Dark and sexy, cute and adorable, evil and dead inside. This book has it all.
You wanna sob one second and have your heart burst the next? Perfect match.

I don’t want to spoil anything for you but shit hits the fan within the first couple of chapters and we don’t recover. Any time you think it’s getting better, Ms Cavaleri spits on your grave. And you will come back begging for more.

Get your snacks, get your tea, and get comfy cause it’s a wild ride.

Book three please.

Review:
Wow!! I'm at lost for words at the epic rollercoaster I've just read 😍

The book picks up where book 1 finished, and oh what an eventful and action packed read it was!! The best part, it wasn't one of those things you expect to happen, most shocked me to the core!

Remnant is a bada$$ MC and I love when we have a female character as strong and powerful as she is.

A prewarnimg it does contain a cliffhanger, perfectly done 'Mic drop' B.K! Honestly I'm now on the edge of my seat waiting for more.

Bri has certainly put me through the emotions with this series so far, I'm not even sure if I'm ready for the last book😭

Emon & Remnant are so perfect for eachother it hurts so much (especially that ending😭), Riella is just too cute & how she learned the ancient fae language😍

Ethereal has my heart, I want him for myself. I love all the different little faerie worlds we enter to within these stories, Bri is the queen💜
