All Things Devour

Rate this book
Sonya Marston is a rational woman. She's a graduate student, an anthropology major, and not the kind of person easy to scare with silly ghost stories. She only believes in what she can see, what she can touch, and what facts can prove.

However, when misfortune strikes in the form of immortal, marauding vampires, Sonya will have to expand her beliefs to include the undead, magic, and a set of ever-vigilant Norse gods. Ghost story or not, one bite to the neck changes Sonya's life forever.

Now, she must accept the help of a beguiling vampire exile named Anton to return to his home of Vidarheim and find the man who bit her. Untended, the curse in her wound will grow and turn her into a senseless ghoul. All is not well in Vidarheim though, so finding—and convincing—her attacker to complete her change will be more difficult than Sonya or Anton anticipate. Time is running short, the curse grows, and Sonya races against fate and forces unknown to find the cure before she loses her life and mind forever.

All Things Devour is a unique story about vampires I haven't encountered before. It's a cross between vampires and Norse gods with some contemporary scenes in the mix.

For the most part, I enjoyed it, I just found it a little odd at times when the feel of the story was old world and then the characters said or did something which seemed too modern. It didn't detract from the story though, and I love how different it was. It just took some getting used to.

The characters were great, especially Anton. I love a protective vampire! His nemesis, although unlikeable to begin with, began to grow on me, and I liked him before the end of the story.

It was an enjoyable, easy read.

Aspiring anthropologist Sonya Marston finds herself thrown headfirst into a world of myth, magic, and mystery. Together with the bewitching vampire Anton, she must work to discover the identity of her attacker, before it's too late...

Wow, wow, wow. Ren has done it again.

First of all, this book is phenomenal. While on the shorter side, every line of this story packs a punch and serves a purpose. Truly nothing is wasted. This book was easy to dive into, the day passing without my notice.

The positive:

✦ Worldbuilding. One of the most unique takes on vampirism I've seen in a long time, while remaining true to the heart of the tale. It's obvious a lot of research went into the mythology in the story, creating a seamless mesh of our modern concept of vampirism and nordic folktale.

✦ Motives. Can't speak too much here without spoilers, but the characters actions felt true to their intentions. A very natural progression of the story.

✦ Morality. All things devour. A poignant concept that Sonja seems to simultaneously accept and struggle with. Really well done in my opinion. There must be death for life. There is honor in death. Lovely. Unlike so many vampire stories written today where either vegetarianism is an option or killing is an afterthought, this book has a much more natural approach to death.

And now the negative:

✦ Some of Sonja's reactions and progressions of thought were difficult for me to reconcile with the circumstances. She is a very practical, stoic character, so perhaps I simply have a bit more difficulty relating to her.

✦ The length. I want more. Yes, this story is complete. No, we, as readers, do not need anything else. Yet the heart wants...

Yes. Pick up this book. You will not regret it. If any part of you wonders, the answer is 'read it'.

This was the first I've read of Ren's books - it will not be the last!

Right from the opening chapters, I was hooked on this story.

Everything is just so well done: the setting (Scotland, initially), the main character (Sonya), the build-up of the first scenes - even Sonya's field of expertise.

This high quality continues throughout the book. Icelandic would naturally be the nearest modern language to the raiders from the North. Different people - all centuries old - would naturally adopt different amounts of technology or understand different amounts of modern behaviour or would simply vary in the level of adhesion to "the old ways". The supporting characters would naturally have a refreshing variation in approach rather than a blanket "vampires do XYZ" that misses out on the light & shade of real life.

Ren's attention to detail is commendable and her consistency means that you just get drawn in to the plot, to the dangers, even to the inadvertent humour that will sometimes arise between cultures.

The overall effect is that "All Things Devour" isn't "Yet Another Vampire Story" spat out by a bored author who just "turns the handle", it is an outstanding example of how good books should be written (and enjoyed!).

The premise of this book caught my attention as I enjoy supernatural style books. Positives of this book:

The writer has come up with some new twists on vampirism.

The main protagonist is not the usual simpering or over confident female - she goes through the emotions or feelings that make her predicament relatable (As much as supernatural events can be relatable).

The story is fast paced because the events are fast paced.

The world building and character progression are great.

What i noticed:

There are some editorial errors in the writing - a word left out of a sentence, the same high value descriptive word used twice in 2 sentences which was obvious on the kindle layout. A lot of over complicated descriptions happened in a few parts of the story which slowed down the reading and for me personally would have been better spaced out - the words are fantastic to use, but not all at once.

Some of the writing is very 'on the nose' and could be more implied than told.

I felt the climax of the story at the end was rushed and would have liked that part to be more drawn out.

Overall an enjoyable, easy read and I would pick up more from this author.

An absolute delight so much more depth than I expected. I didn’t want to put it down and was sorry when it ended.

The story is intricately woven with side stories and touches of whimsy. A totally adorable vampire MMC, Anton, who you can’t help but fall for. The romance between Sonya the FMC and Anton works so well.

All the characters are well drawn, the good, bad and the somewhere in between. There’s some gore and brutality, it’s a vampire story, but it is balanced by Sonya’s viewpoint and the reality of the need to survive.

This is the first book I have read from Ren Tachibana but I will look out for more of her work. I can thoroughly recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance.

The nice thing about this book is that the vampires are somewhat different from what we are normally used to. This also gave it a unique twist. The world building is very nice and old, but speech is modern. I really liked the characters and can definitely recommend this book!
