I wasn’t familiar with Daniel Habif until I came across this book.

I’ve read my share of self-help/spiritual books, and what was striking for me in this book was how motivational speech can be presented in negative style of writing. The tone changes a bit or at times to more positive as it goes on. However, the negative presentation can be striking at times, and what comes to my mind is the cultural differences. The way or the language it’s presented with may resonate in one part of the world but may not in another. For example: “Everything is impossible for lazy minds.”

This International Bestseller is presented as groundbreaking, and it might be to those who are not familiar with the subject. I’ve heard the points brought in this book before. I believe it might be more how it’s presented, but again the presentation may work for some and put off others – which is questionable to me in the genre of self-help/spirituality.

However, the points that are made are pretty current and most talked about in present time.

For example:
- In school we learn certain subjects but nothing about emotional intelligence, and how to process our emotions.
- If you want to change something about your life, then you need to start with yourself and what you believe in.
- We need to take responsibility, instead of playing victims.
- Life is not about being perfect. It’s about pushing ourselves to go beyond the boundaries – which are set by our beliefs.
- Life is a journey, not an end result.
- Results come from taking actions. Often fear stops us from taking any action.
- If you resist changes, you resist opportunities to grow on personal level.
- Prayer or meditation is a good form to find a space in which you get to know yourself better, in the process becoming less afraid of making changes in your life.

This is a very unique self-help book, not because it has something new to say but because of the amount of arrogance and shady subtext permeating the “I’m super humble despite my dictionary long list of accomplishments and I’m unlocking that greatness in your” text.

Maybe because I don’t read self-help, I’m unfamiliar with how much shade can be thrown at “haters”. Like there is literally a letter addressed to his detractors. Like bro, what? You found Jesus now maybe you should find therapy.

There’s the standard fare of checklists and mindfulness “do better” verbiage that hits the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” favorites but makes a passing sweep at mentioning mental health challenges. It’s also often comically contradictory. If someone is cold and doesn’t seem as committed then keep giving more! Smothering them with hugs and kisses will melt their heart because ice can’t withstand heat! Because you’re the problem if someone doesn’t love you or love you as much as you love them.

Then later it’s, “well, you knew it was the wrong person, but you carried on regardless.” Really? Self-respect is important; loving yourself is key! Just don’t love yourself enough to leave if someone is withholding and emotionally distant. No wait, “Recover your self-esteem and say "no".

There are so many very strong opinions that are in opposition and/or are ridiculously simplistic. The tone shifts between arrogance, somewhat useful, potentially supportive and humble bragging within the same paragraph. That book cover image speaks volumes. The narrator kept me as engaged as possible so kudos to him.

Self help is not my genre. And every time I read another one I confirm that. I requested this book because of the fame of it's author, I had heard about this title a lot (the Spanish version), and people seem to like it. However, is not for me. I find it's full of old and very basic recommendations, a lot of personal opinions of the author, much judgement of anything that does not align with his opinions. I couldn't find much substance.

Thanks to netgalley for the copy for review.
