Peter Bronson's "Promised Land: How the Midwest Was Won" is one of the more unique books I've ever read and it's more-so due to how it is written to get through the story it tells. The book begins near Covington, KY in 1862 with the siege of Cincinnati and a Confederate soldier coming upon a couple of Union soldiers who are charged with protecting the Queen City. From there these individuals tell story of how various events came about which Cincinnati would help in protecting the early days of the Union as well as the search for a group of individuals who knew information about the plans to take the city. The book story is based on events that did happen and also the stories as well guide we the reader through this chapter in history as if we were really there. It's that storytelling with conversations that likely would've happened that make this worthwhile.
