I have read and enjoyed all the previous books in this crime series set in Rutland. So I was looking forward to this sixth offering in the series. However, this story just didn't hit the mark for me. The crime - the body of a young woman found dead in a field and the subsequent investigation seemed to take second place to a serious conflict between two of the detectives involved in the case. There was one chapter - I won't go into detail - where a quite major event occurred in the private life of one of the detectives and then was just ignored for the remainder of the book with no further follow up or conclusion so the reader was left wondering - 'what happened next?' I felt that it was just a filler - although perhaps the author may follow up in the next book. On a positive basis, the reappearing police characters are well drawn and believable and the investigation felt largely authentic.
This is the 6th book in the Rutland series and although I have enjoyed the other books this storyline felt rushed and not as well rounded as in previous books. Elements of the story were not followed up and were ignored by the author. At one point two characters in the book had the same Christian name within 2 pages of the story which became confusing. It was disappointing.
This is the 6th book in the Rutland crime series and is an excellent read. Very well written, as is the rest of the series. A young woman is murdered at a party and Caroline and the team investigate. Also, there is trouble amongst the team. Will they pull through? Highly recommended.
