This was an entertaining crime thriller. Two National Park wilderness guides are gunned down. Tribal police deputy, Sage Mendiluze and his dog Peak, are recruited by Special Agent Maggie Comstock to join the task force tracking the perpetrators. As more people in other national parks also start turning up dead, the tensions ramp up. I thought this was fast paced. It was clever the way the characters picked up the clues and pieced them together. I loved the descriptions of the parks and nature that they were hiking through too. Overall, I pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this and will definitely continue on with this new series!
Thank you Suzy approved book tours and the publisher for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
This book is a gripping, high-stakes thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The combination of rugged wilderness survival, intense investigation, and a ticking clock creates a perfect storm of suspense. Sage Mendiluze is a compelling protagonist—smart, resourceful, and driven by a strong sense of justice. His bond with his dog, Peak, adds an emotional layer that makes their partnership even more engaging.
The plot is fast-paced, with well-timed twists that keep the tension building. The stakes couldn't be higher, with lives on the line and a race against time to stop a group of dangerous killers. The addition of Special Agent Maggie Comstock as a strong, capable ally only enhances the dynamic, making the team feel well-rounded.
What I really appreciate is the way the story balances action with investigative elements, making the process of tracking the killers just as exciting as the confrontations themselves. The setting in the national parks and the Wind River Reservation adds a unique atmosphere, making the environment almost like another character in the story.
If you love thrillers with smart leads, plenty of action, and a bit of a race against time, this book will definitely hit the mark. It’s a thrilling ride from start to finish, and you'll find yourself rooting for Sage and Maggie all the way through.
A great start to a new series! The writing, characterizations and plot were all finely crafted making this one easy to fly through in just a couple of sittings. Sage and his loyal dog, Peak are easy to root for and I look forward to following their journeys going forward. I enjoyed how the tension gradually got more and more pronounced as the plot thickened and the chase for the perpetrators intensified. Although not a cliffhanger, there is a story line that is hinted at at the end that I look forward to exploring more as the series progresses. All-in-all, this is a very entertaining thriller and one that I think is a perfect 'beach read'.
Thank you to the authors, Blackstone Publishing and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted copy and including me on this tour.
So when I read that their comparing this book to Jack Reacher and Joe Pickett I was like sign me up!! After reading I have to agree that this is great start to a new series! I love the characters and the the dog Peak! Can’t wait for more!!

Sage Mendiluze, having been raised on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, returned home to join the Tribal Police following his service in the Marine Corps. When two instructors from NOLS are discovered murdered within a National Forest, and it's determined that the shots originated from the reservation, Sage is assigned to investigate. His loyal companion, Peak, an Australian Shepherd, is always by his side. When they find the location, they almost become two more casualties when an IED detonates. Shortly, more visitors at National Parks are being murdered, and a connection is made. Maggie Comstock, a special agent with the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch, is assigned to lead the investigation. Recognizing Sage's potential, she requests that he and Peak join the task force in DC. The President has expressed the urgent need to bring an end to this reign of terror by the 4th of July. Will Sage and Maggie be able to collaborate effectively and identify the responsible individuals before their grand finale?
Told in multiple POVs, this book was thrilling! It was action-packed and suspenseful. It really had me on the edge of my seat! It was fast-paced and had me engaged throughout! I absolutely loved the setting of the Wind River Reservation in WY and all of my favorite National Parks. The National Outdoor Leadership School was even referenced in this book! I adored Sage and his dog Peak and really wanted to see him get together with Maggie. That part kind of left off in a cliffhanger, so I'm definitely hoping for a 2nd book! If you're looking for a heart-pounding, entertaining crime thriller, this one is for you! I highly recommend it!
Dick Lochte and William Webster, the authors of “Rockets’ Red Glare” have written an intense, captivating, and suspenseful criminal novel. The Genres for this new series are : Crime Fiction, Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Psychological Thriller, and Fiction. This is one book that will have you on edge. There are betrayals, danger, murder, twists and turns, and espionage. The motives for killings and attacks are revenge and hatred of the United States Government. Where and when would be the perfect attack?
It starts with two murders at a National Campsite, and “Tribal Deputy Sage Mendiluze” and his amazing dog, Peak, are tracking for the killers, when they are almost blown up by an IED. All the branches of the government are called in to assess what is happening. It appears National Campsites are the target of at least two extremely dangerous killers. Sage also discovers at a crime scene jars of enormous ants, that are not local to the area. That certainly sends chills down my spine.)
With all resources possible, this has to be stopped by July 4th or there could be deadly consequences. I suggest that you read this suspenseful thriller to find out what happens.
This is a fast moving thriller. It takes place in the few days leading up to July 4th with the main event happening in Washington, D.C. on July 4th.
The book has victims being ambushed and murdered in national parks out west. That is how the main character, Sage Mendiluze, gets involved.
I think Sage is a hero that makes sense for this book. He has emotional scars from his youth. His past experience as a Marine makes him able to process and help find who is wreaking havoc in the national parks.
The book feels not only timely but quite realistic.
Rocket’s Red Glare is apparently the first book in a new series. Sage Mendiluze of the tribal police (and his dog, Peak) are a couple of very cool new characters on the thriller scene. They are tasked with helping a task force to track down a couple of people with deadly mischief on their minds. What followed was a taut thriller that had good action and even better characterization. Every so often, it was very hard to put down. I’m very much interested in the second book
‼️ Thank you to NetGalley, Blackstone Publishing, and William Webster and Dick Lochte for allowing me this opportunity to read Rockets' Red Glare ‼️
I would not say that I hated or disliked this book. I liked the plot of it: national parks being attacked by unknown terrorists and the national agencies search for them. I love Sage's commitment to the reservation; to his dog, Peak; and the overall mission.
Here are my issues though: 🔹 Sage Mendiluze seemed like a "Mary Sue" character (or a character that had no flaws and is overpowered) for most, if not all, of the book. Example: He is an ex-Marine that earned the nickname "Lone Wolf" because he refused to have a spotter with him when he was inserted into missions because he didn't want someone else's blood on his hands (well, besides his target's blood, anyway). Another example: He knows, magically, where the terrorists will be and what their main attack method will be because of his synesthesia (I'm pretty sure that is not how synesthesia works). 🔹 There were racist hints everywhere. Referring to Sage has "half-blood" and other Native Americans on the reservation as "full-blooded." I didn't like that at all, especially when he isn't supposed to be the racist character. 🔹 Information was overloading. Example: When the reader is learning about Sage's military background or when Sage and Maggie go outside "to get fresh air." It just felt like too much information was given all at once. 🔹 Maggie turned into another dumb girl. When she finally is able to confront the terrorists, she ends up tripping over a tree root and the terrorists overpower her because she fell. Couldn't keep her standing or make her gun jam or something but no... she trips, backwards, and falls.
I feel like readers of Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher will be let down because of the lack of action scenes and the unrealistic dialogue between characters.
Overall, I think it was good first try at an action series. I would be interested in reading about Sage's sister, Yellow Bird, and that investigation. I would also want to read more about Peak, because I'm a sucker for a good dog.

What a wild ride! I love a good action adventure thriller that has elements of a mystery to it, and this had that and more. Sage, and his dog Peak, were probably my favorite characters, as I loved following them around and rooting for them to solve the mysterious killings happening all around them. National Parks are my favorite, so I enjoyed that the novel took place in one for the majority. There’s even a bit of romance included for those who enjoy that trope, and I can’t wait to see what adventures lie ahead next for Sage and his pup!
Rockets’ Red Glare is a sharp, action driven thriller introducing Tribal Police Deputy Sage Mendiluze and his dog, Peak, as they investigate a double murder in Wyoming’s backcountry. When an IED nearly kills them, it becomes clear the killers are highly skilled and deadly. As similar attacks spread across national parks, Sage is recruited by a federal task force led by Special Agent Maggie Comstock. With the Fourth of July approaching and pressure mounting, Sage and Maggie race to stop a violent plot before it strikes again. Perfect for fans of Jack Reacher and Joe Pickett.

Rockets’ Red Glare is an intense, fast paced thriller that absolutely delivers for fans of Jack Reacher and Joe Pickett. After two wilderness guides are killed near a remote campsite, Tribal Police Deputy Sage Mendiluze and his loyal dog Peak are sent to investigate. When an IED nearly takes them out, it becomes clear the killers are highly trained and extremely dangerous. As similar attacks hit national parks across the country, Sage is pulled into a high stakes’ manhunt alongside Special Agent Maggie Comstock. With the Fourth of July deadline looming and pressure mounting from every level of government, the chase becomes a race against time. Packed with snipers, hidden explosives, and nonstop action, this is a gripping start to a promising new series. And yes, Peak completely steals the show.
This is the perfect 4th of July read and I loved Tribal Police Deputy Sage Mendiluze’s character. He is an old fashioned cop who uses common sense and reasoning when investigating crimes. When dead bodies start appearing in the National Parks, there is major concern of safety and who is next and where. It’s the height of summer and the parks are packed with tourists, they cannot afford to shut them down. After Sage is assigned to find out what he can about the two that were shot down near the Wind River Indian Reservation, he himself almost becomes another casualty when a bomb is tripped near the sniper nest he finds. Determined to find out who would be so heartless, he does what he does best and gets leads before anyone else. This causes him to be pulled into the national investigation with every alphabet soup agency trying to take lead on these cases. Meanwhile the 4th of July is coming quick and each day only brings more casualties and the fear that the President might be a target as well. He does find a few agents willing to trust his instincts and back him up, and the more they uncover the more they realize this goes way back and has many connected characters who have been on watch for years. Can they find these murders before they build up to more casualties or something worse with America’s most iconic holiday ahead? Loved this one, loved Peak and really hope there’s another novel diving into Yellow Bird’s case. Thank you to the authors for the complementary novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
This was literally an explosive read—Rockets’ Red Glare doesn’t waste time lighting the fuse. From page one, this book slaps ya with sniper fire, IEDs, and the chilling idea that national parks—places meant for peace and escape—are being turned into battlegrounds. As a guy who grew up loving stories like Jack Reacher and Joe Pickett, this one land right in my wheelhouse.
Tribal Police Deputy Sage Mendiluze is a compelling lead—stoic, sharp, and determined, with his loyal dog Peak at his side. I loved how Peak wasn’t just a sidekick but an active, vital character in the investigation. The dynamic between Sage and Special Agent Maggie Comstock gives the story another edge, especially as they race against a literal ticking clock to stop a domestic terror campaign set to climax on the Fourth of July.
There’s a realism in the terrain descriptions that put me right in the boots of Sage, hiking through the unforgiving Wyoming wilderness. The action is intense, the stakes are sky-high, and the underlying motivations—revenge and deep-rooted hatred—feel frighteningly plausible. Oh, and the scene with the mysterious jars of massive non-native ants? Absolutely terrifying.
If you’re into high-octane thrillers with rugged characters, smart pacing, and a patriotic countdown to catastrophe, Rockets’ Red Glare needs to be on your radar. It’s a strong start to what I hope becomes a full-blown series. Sign me up for more Sage and Peak
Have you ever visited one of the majestic US National Parks🏞? What if we lost all access to them because they were under a “national threat”? William Webster and Dick Lochte explore this premise in their novel, Rockets' Red Glare.
In addition to the drones over DC on the cover, I was drawn to the novel by its book blurb, as it created more intrigue with hints of murder, an explosive 4th of July, and an Australian shepherd named Peak. It wound up being a quick and entertaining read! There were definite high-intensity moments, and I appreciated the short chapters. Plus, the authors’ descriptions of the Wind River Indian Reservation allowed me to feel like I was hiking alongside their main character, Sage Mendiluze.
However, I felt like there was an overabundance of information and characters, and I thought some of the jargon/language inconsistent. But the positives far outweigh the negatives, and I am looking forward to reading the next novel (as there were a few loose ends to wrap up). Thank you to the authors, @suzyapprovedbooktours and @blackstonepublishing for my gifted physical copy and having me on the tour! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I fell for Sage right off the bat! I loved his intelligence and his wit. And don’t forget about his dog! She is the best part of the whole story! Add in Maggie and you have an unstoppable duo!
Well, it has been quite a while since I have read a good terrorist novel! I enjoyed how this one played out! It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat with the pressure of time. Will Sage stop the terrorists in time?? You will have to read this to find out…just be prepared for some heart thumping drama!

Rockets’ Red Glare was a very enjoyable read featuring Sage Mendiluze and his trusty sidekick Peak, his Australian Shepherd. Can I just say that any book with a dog as one of the main characters will always have my heart.
Sage is a Tribal Police Deputy for Wyoming’s Wind River Indian Reservation. When he and Peak are called in to investigate the gunning down of two wilderness guides in a national park, Sage discovers that the guides were shot by snipers from 500 feet away and their perch was actually located on tribal land. It’s then discovered that more and more National Park visitors are being murdered across the US.
The action never really stops from there in this crime thriller and continues to ramp up as each page was turned. The plot ends up being a race against time to save lives, including the President’s, and is set during the Fourth of July celebrations.
I loved the settings, especially the parks and even the reservations. I learned things I had no idea about, especially about the tribal people and their way of life.
If you are a lover of thrillers, suspense, mystery, crime fiction, etc., you need to read Rockets’ Red Glare. I can’t wait for the next book with Sage and Peak!
*Thanks so much to partner Blackstone Publishing and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted ARC and for including me on the book tour!*
A well-written, edge-of-your-seat thriller! Webster and Lochte drop you straight into the world of law enforcement as terrorists begin targeting America’s National Parks. Sage Mendiluze, a humble and likeable tribal police deputy (who adores his dog, Peak 🐾), is recruited by Maggie Comstock, the no-nonsense woman leading the investigation. Together, they chase a trail of murders, piecing together clues as the FBI, National Park Service, Secret Service, and local law enforcement join forces to stop the terrorists before more innocent lives are lost.
Sage is the kind of character you can’t help but root for, while Maggie shines as a strong leader who isn’t afraid to keep the men in check. The story touches on real fears, making you think about safety here at home, and the depictions of terrorist factions are chilling.
This was a fantastic first book in a series, and I’ll definitely be following Sage and Peak’s next adventure. The ending? Let’s just say it left me hanging off a cliff… and ready for more!
This book grabbed me right from the start and didn’t let go. Rockets’ Red Glare is set in the wild beauty of Wyoming’s Wind River Reservation, where Deputy Sage Mendiluze and his dog, Peak, stumble into a deadly plot that quickly grows far beyond anything they imagined. The pacing is tight, the suspense keeps building, and the Fourth of July setting adds a perfect ticking clock.
I really enjoyed how vivid the world feels—Webster captures the wilderness so well you can almost feel the mountain air and smell the pine. It’s an action story, but it’s not just about gunfire and explosions. There’s a real human side to it too, especially in the growing connection between Sage and FBI agent Maggie Comstock. Their relationship feels honest and natural, and by the end I was already wondering what kind of threat they’ll face next—and what will happen between them.
Rockets’ Red Glare is smart, well-paced, and full of heart. It’s the kind of thriller that makes you want to talk about it afterward—and makes you hope the next book in the series isn’t too far away.
I read this book at the perfect time. Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the government has mandated that crimes of terror in 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬’ 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐆𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐞 must be stopped by the Fourth of July. The countdown is on!
This was such a thrilling read. It has adventure, action, and great backdrops of the National Forests, Parks, and Wyoming’s Wind River Indian Reservation. What sets it apart is the unique perspective of Tribal Police Deputy Sage Mendiluze and his dog, Peak, as they investigate a trail of murder and chaos in the nation's parks.
If you love a high-stakes thriller, packed with snipers, explosives, and other terroristic methods, this is one for you. While the tension is palpable to see if Sage can stop the mayhem and violence, I must warn you that I think Peak steals the show.
Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours @sagemseries @dicklochte and @blackstonepublishing for the gifted book.
Rockets’ Red Glare by William Webster and Dick Lochte is prime summertime beach reading. From the exclamatory first sentence the reader is compelled to keep reading. Warning: don’t start this book until you are able to settle in for some uninterrupted pleasure and excitement. The narrative and accessible writing style combine to propel the reader into the mystery’s story lines in constant search of the next surprising twist of the tale. A man-hunt for a murderer with the clock ticking toward an unknown but all too ominous national disaster, propels a seemingly humble tribal police officer with extraordinary intellect and skills to a reckoning more than half way across the country in the nation’s capitol on July 4th. I was pleased to read that Rocket’s Red Glare is only the first installment of a thriller series featuring the admirable deputy Sage Mendiluze we will all want to know better.
While thrillers aren't always my go-to genre, I’ve read enough of them to recognize when one truly stands out. Rockets' Red Glare really differentiates itself from the rest. From start to finish, it kept me on my toes with its gripping narrative and a main character unlike any I’ve encountered before.
Without giving too much away, the story revolves around a timely and suspenseful intrigue that feels both fresh and relevant. The pacing makes it nearly impossible to put the book down. Just when you think you have things figured out, Webster and Lochte throw in a twist that keeps you guessing.
If you're looking for a thriller that offers something different—something with substance, sharp storytelling, and a protagonist who truly leaves an impression—Rockets' Red Glare is well worth the read. Highly recommended!
Thank you @sagemseries @blackstonepublishing and @suzyapprovedbooktours for the #gifted book.
ROCKETS RED GLARE is a fast paced suspense thriller with short chapters that kept me turning the pages. Two Wilderness Guides are murdered and a bus at Zion Nation Park is blown up killing many inside. From there the suspense continues as Tribal Deputy Sage Mendiluze and his dog Peak join forces with government agencies to stop the terrorists from killing the President at the White House Fourth of July celebration.
Deputy Sage is an interesting character and a bit of a loner who holds his own against government agencies. We learn a little about his past growing up on the reservation. I liked that we even got a bit of Peaks perspective. The ending is left open and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
With its wilderness setting, this book gave serious Heller – The River vibes.
I find nature pretty terrifying anyhow, so add in a murder and a mystery and I’m already scared half to death.
Besides the setting, I loved the interactions between the two main characters, I loved the sustained tension throughout, and I loved that this is the very first in what (I hope will) become a series, (no cliffhanger, though!)
Did I mention there’s a dog? THE DOG.
I was a bit concerned on the outset with what could have been a Magical Native Trope, but it ended up playing out okay, so far as I could tell. I’ll leave that discourse for people smarter than I.
This author, while new to me, has several works in their back pocket, so I’m looking forward to tracking them down this summer.
Two Wilderness guides are gunned down at a campsite in a national forest. The shots, coming from Wind River Indian Reservation, so that brings Tribal Deputy Sage Mendiluze, and his dog, to investigate. When more casualties start happening at national parks across America, it also brings in Agent Maggie Comstock. I really liked the whole national parks, Wind River setting. I haven't read too many thrillers that take place in national parks, and that really kept this interesting for me. This was definitely a cross between Jack Reacher, and Joe Pickett. Im really looking for more of this. Check it out you won't be disappointed. A great summer read.
I wanted to like this one. I'm a sucker for political thrillers, and the premise of a Native American tracker and his dog being pulled into a terrorist conspiracy was a great hook and a fresh spin on the genre.
Unfortunately, the novel is filled with lazy coincidences, a non-sensical terroristic plot, cartoonist and half-baked supporting characters, and a clear lack of research that me rolling my eyes throughout.
The novel is light on action, too - something you don't want from your political/military style thrillers. While the novel isn't long, it is incredibly boring at times. I hate to be this negative in a review, but there was very little I liked about it.
Set around the 4th of July, the nations finest must product the US from attacks. It starts with attacks at National Parks, one which located near an Indian Reservation, where a police officer from the reservation gets involved. Tribal Deputy Sage Mendiluze is someone you want on your side. He knows his stuff and is invaluable in starting to identify the attackers. The reader hears from the attackers POV and it makes the book very interesting. This is a perfect summer read because it’s set around the 4th of July. The book also leaves the door open for another book which I will definitely be reading.
This was non stop action trying to keep two terrorists from taking more lives at the big White House celebration for the Fourth of July.. What starts as 2 rangers dead moves to a blown up bus full at Zions National Park, our MC Sage and his dog Peak have only 7 days to stop them before they take out their largest target.
Sage was a great character. Very intuitive, very precise. There are so many agencies involved in this and he did his best to work with them all in the most productive way. This plot felt so real and it was very scary feeling it throughout the read, gave me chills. The ending had some 😲 and I can't wait for more
I very much enjoyed this book. I found myself rooting for the main character and his trusty dog as they quietly and professionally pursued the clues which led them to the killers. As an easterner with little experience hiking the beautiful but challenging mountains of the West, I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the people and the places associated with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and the Indian reservations. The authors left a main issue unresolved so I am looking forward to the next book. Highly recommended !
I love a well-written explosive crime thriller and this one drew me in immediately with a gruesome crime scene leading into meeting our hero and his dog Peak. With instructions to find the killer(s) by July 4th and bringing in Special Agent Maggie Comstock we're taken on a rollercoaster of twists and turns as they race to find the perpetrators. It is indeed a thriller and a masterfully woven web of clues and puzzle pieces to put together to solve this mystery in time and I enjoyed the ride immensely.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
