A follow-up to Black Card Black, this Halloween story features Woods and Essie visiting an apple orchard and doing everything but picking pumpkins. Masks, werewolves, mannequins, haunted attractions, pumpkin SPICE (get it?). It's all here, it's a Halloween episode!
Essie, I dont blame you. I'll go feral for Woods, too. I catch myself leaning in, waiting for Woods to entertain Essie. Like what is going to do? What spontaneous moment will he have with her? He's not shy when it comes to the dirty things. Im just saying. 🤭
-Mid-life -Navigating new relationships and the anxiety that comes with that. -Masks. 🤭 - "Look at this cool rock I found" -Reassurance.
This is the perfect follow up to Black Card Black. Love Woods & Essie. It also touches base on how it feels when getting into a new relationship, the excitement and anxiety that comes to meeting someone new and how it can feel to navigate something new. Essie is also one of those characters I always can relate to! Can't get enough of these two honestly! ♡
*Must be read after Black Card Black. I don’t think it would work as a standalone.*
Obsessed with this author. I wish they had at least 20 more books out so I could binge them all. As is, I’m going to have to pace myself, spread them out over the year.
This is a continuation of Black Card Black. Fantastic first half, but it loses some of the momentum in the second half by being a bit too inner-monologue-y, and the humor didn’t hit right. It’s a short story, so I still think this is well worth the time. I relate to Essie so much, and I looooove Woods.
I wish this was included in the back of Black Card Black the paperback.
Very short follow-up to Black Card Black. 🖤 Halloween theme with a house of mirrors 👀 and fall festival setting. 🎃 Plus, ROCKS! "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩." What really made this book for me was the cheeky banter and adorable awkwardness + overthinking. Love Woods and Essie together! As always, the poetic nature and melancholy in J.D.'s writing is a happy brain worm wiggling around in my head. Such a fun read! I'm glad I didn't wait until "next spooky season" to dive into this one because I LOVED IT.
I’m literally obsessed with J.D. Midnights writing style so I may be bias. But this short was just what i needed. A little Woods was just what I needed.
This takes place after the events that transpired in Black Card Black. If you haven’t read BCB yet, I highly suggest you do because its panty dropping.
In Pumpkin Patch Essie is going through the motions after her separation and during her new found loved interest, Woods….which she meticulously overthinks and psyches herself out over btw. Woods is just being Woods, chill and really just trying to navigate the course that his life is taking to.
Additionally Essie and Woods are also figuring out their new “relationship” and in doing so get to know each other a little better. I have to say The anticipation of sexytime was killing me but when it arrived, it delivered! i will never think of a wolf mask the same. ;]
The banter as always is a fav and worked perfectly with Essie and Woods dynamic. “this one though”....I liked a lot :] pun intended.
🎵𝔹𝕒𝕓𝕪 𝕀'𝕞 𝕙𝕠𝕨𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕦𝕦🐺 • • • Halloween was so different this year and I was having a hard time getting into the spirit, but J.D. came in clutch with a festive short story involving 2 of my favorite romance characters!
It's October now and Essie is finally free of her cheating husband and settling into her new routine + apartment. She can't stop thinking about her last night with the Black Card men, especially the drive home when Woods gave her his phone number after the undeniable connection they felt.
One thing leads to another and Essie and Woods are reunited for some fall festivities at the pumpkin patch in matching costumes. 🎃 If you're a fan of Halloween, pumpkins, masked men, and quiet men with a sweet rock collection, then you definitely need to read this. "𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡"
So if you read black card black, this won’t be a spoiler, but if you didn’t sorry. After the events of black card, black Essie and woods found themselves in an entanglement of sorts. They’re not quite dating, but you can tell that there’s some type of tension there. AnyWho, in this book they go on a date after Essie basically forced it to happen.. Woods has a weird sense of humor and talks like someone who has severe anxiety. And for someone to do what he does that is crazy. AnyWho, the date went well? And we get some Halloween smut at the end. And then we get the Howl. If you know you know. What’s the howl you ask? You will have to read to find out. Definitely a new favorite of mine within a book. All in all this book was another masterpiece by JD midnight but when doesn’t he write masterpieces?
Another awesome story from one of my favorite authors. It gives off cozy Fall and Halloween vibes, with apples and cinnamon scents, corny Halloween puns, masks, and a haunted house. Woods and Essie from Black Card Black go on a date at an orchard with costumes. I like the fact that these two characters are not the typical early twenties types, they’re in their early thirties (still love the twenty something characters too but different is refreshing). Their banter and playfulness is top notch.
One of my favorite quotes from Woods is when he says this to Essie, “I’m sorry if I made you feel like I wasn’t attracted to you. But if you’re that worried about it, you can come back to my place later and we can really discuss how pretty you are”. This had me melting like butter on hot apple pie.
"People did this for fun? This was dating? You were supposed to just… connect with another person and hope they felt it too?"
A little slice of life novella that is 75% anxiety representation, 15% cute and 5% hopeful. There's some cool rocks, pumpkins and a little spice in there as well, a nice autumn story.
I was happy to see a little more from Essie and Woods, and would be completely happy if all we saw of them moving forward was HFN with casual dates and hanging out. I like them, and I like them together.
The level of overthinking of the FMC is hilarious and entirely relatable. Kind of makes me wish I had her chosen form of therapy available, it seems to do the trick.

Would read again, would recommend to anyone wanting a short cozy novella or who enjoyed the banter in Black Card Black.
so what happened with essie & her douchie xhubby from BCB? heres the little quick read that will answer ur questions. this picks up a few weeks after, refiguring out her life. yes...woods is still in the picture!! dirty talker, masked, & delicious as ever!! plus a closer look at his "personal side" outside of work.dammit!! i want this man!! with their spicy little fall 1st date at the pumpkin patch, hopefully will give her a kickstart to a brighter "starting over".
"Hi. I'm normally pretty shy but uh… would you like to have disrespectful sex in a haunted attraction?"
I’ve discovered I have a thing for dumb boys written by JD. Not dumb as in they’re stupid, but dumb as in they’re not afraid to be silly.
This short story is a little follow up from BLACK CARD BLACK. While not needed, it’s recommended to read first so you can have an idea of who Woods & Essie are as people and why they are where they are in the story. It also helps with the giddiness you’re going to feel over them together.
I’ve said this before, & I’ll say it over and over again. I love everything JD writes & I eat that sh*t up every time. His writing style just works for me. He’s one of a few male authors I’ll read, especially when it comes to smut, but he just does it right every time.
I really liked this continuation of Black Card Black with Woods and Essie since they were my favorite pairing in Black Card Black. I will say it was a little jarring seeing Woods being like kind of shy and timid towards Essie but it showed how he can basically switch from kind and caring to downright dirty and depraved, I mean best of both worlds right? I know the black card is for.... emergencys? Extenuating circumstances? Whatever you want to call it but I wonder if it will be used again for Essie or if she'll pass it on knowing she's basically passing Woods on... anyway we might find out on the next episode or we might not. I'm not the author
"I'm just a little horror movie slut. I sure hope no one in a mask comes and gets me—" Essie is an icon and I am so here for it 🤣
What a spicy little short I loved this!! So hot for something as short as it is.
Fave quotes: “Hi,” he said to the reflection. “I’m normally pretty shy but uh… would you like to have disrespectful sex in a haunted attraction?” "As long as you make it really disrespectful." -hot hot hot😍
"Come on, Woods. Howl for me. I've been such a good Halloween slut, haven't I?"
This was such a great quick read! If you read Black Card Black then I’m sure you decided we needed more of Woods. This 40 page SNACK delivered.
Both characters are so relatable! As someone in my early 30s, everything that Esmeralda internalizes is exactly what goes through my head when I’m on a date or thinking of a new guy. And his golden retriever personality is so endearing and cute while still being filthy and “Black card black esque.”
This is a really short novella that takes place after the book Black Card Black.
Essie is going through the stress and anxiety of dating again at 40 after her soon-to-be divorce. Her and Woods are navigating their dating relationship. J.D. is so good at making you laugh with banter and puns, while also having erotic/spicy scenes throughout his stories. This was a quick, spicy, humorous, Halloween themed short story. Go read it!!! 🎃🖤
Excuse me, Sir J.D., may I have a moment of your time? I have some things to discuss.
What?! Only a few pages?! Daddy Woods and Essie deserve more. This was incredibly hot and a great follow-up to "Black Card Black." I hope you consider creating an entire season of "episodes!"
To readers: If you enjoy hot, quick reads featuring a masked man, this book is for you. Just be sure to read "Black Card Black" first.
OOO okay okay so if you haven’t read black card black this short story mighttt not make sense BUT its still an amazing story nonetheless
this story follows essie & woods as they venture into their new found.. “relationship”? you see more of woods’ personality in this story! which i absolutely LOVE. you get a cute halloween aspect and some spice.
So cute! The perfect fall date. Flannel, an apple orchard, pumpkin heads, and being disrespectfully naughty in a haunted attraction. Perfection! I loved Black Card Black and getting a little taste of the after with Essie and Woods is the best happy butterfly feeling ever. I smiled so much. I loved their sarcastic, playful banter. They made things fun and spicy. Such a great short story!
If you liked Black Card Black by JD Midnight, do not sleep on Pumpkin Patch! This is a short follow-up story that tells about a fall themed date between two of the main characters from Black Card Black. It’s cute as hell, the banter is so fun and there’s some haunted house and hall of mirrors spice!
I loved this so much and read it in one sitting. I highly recommend for anyone that’s needing a boost in serotonin or want some relatable characters that overanalyze text messages.
This is such a fun read if you loved Black Card Black. A super quick short full of fun banter and getting to see what happens next with Essie and Woods. I absolutely need a bunch of short stories about these two. I loved this!
This takes place a few weeks after Black Card Black ends ( which if you haven’t read do yourself a favor). Woods and Essie go on a date and have some fun at a haunted house 🥵. I loved this little short story! I’m hoping we get a Christmas one too🎄🤞
