Mad About “Mad Girl” Whitney & Her Pack o’ Pooches!
These first four books of the Coyote Run series have been my solace in a time of personal turbulence. The character-driven stories are multi-faceted, at times so funny I laugh out loud, at others so poignant that tears run from my eyes. And sometimes both at once!
Maddie “Mad Girl” Whitney is one of the most insightful characters I’ve ever had the pleasure to know through the pages of a book. From the first page of the first book to the last page of the most recent book, Deadman’s Dance, I was hooked! Maddie is a study in personality types, an amalgam of the events that influenced her personal evolution, and a continuing work in progress- as are we all, though we frequently forget that where we are is not where we have to stay (emotionally as well as physically). Reading Maddie’s stories and the insights into her personal thoughts have become a balm to my soul, as I recognize so much of her in myself, though without the obvious outward tics, and her journeys of personal growth have shown me that I don’t have to stay “stuck” in my personal mire, that a little fearlessness can go a long way, that facing things and resolving them, no matter how difficult, instead of hiding from them, is the only way to truly grow and to put the trauma & problems of the past in the past and keep them there. Once we’ve learned the lessons we can from the experience, we continue on in life as the same person, but as a more evolved version of ourselves. If Maddie can do it, with so much stacked against her in her difficulties of understanding & navigating confusing daily social interactions, all while running a successful business that so perfectly suits who she is, then I can face my anxiety and follow her example.
The insights into dog behavior have also been invaluable in helping me to TRULY understand my dogs, and to respond to them differently than I had been. The lessons I learned from Maddie’s techniques with dogs have already helped me to train my dogs better and faster than I ever thought possible- and my dogs love it! They love knowing what’s expected of them and are beginning to find joy in having more of a purpose than just waiting at home for us all day and going for one evening walk. Through lessons learned in this book and another in canine psychology (yes there really is such a thing!) I’ve been able to FINALLY take my big, happy, high-energy German Shepherd/Pitbull mix to the dog park, where she can socialize and play to her doggie heart’s content. I had been afraid of taking her there because she nips when excited and I was terrified she’d nip a stranger and be taken away from me. But now that I understand that most of her nipping is from anxiety & excitement, I’ve been working with her to overcome these fears & big feelings, and her life is immeasurably more joyful than it was before reading these books. I really appreciate the insights into the doggy-mind, and so does my girl Sage.
I also learned it’s ok to have her wear a bucket muzzle to the park until I’m 100% confident in her behavior. I always thought it was a stigma that a dog with a muzzle must be a “bad dog” and didn’t want her branded that way, but it’s just another learning tool, and I no longer care what anyone thinks- she’s another work in progress, like me!
These books have made a huge impact on my life in so many ways- and they’re incredibly fun to read! I cannot recommend them enough to anyone who has ever felt different, misunderstood, left out, and especially to dog lovers! I wish there was a CWRC near me as I’d love to volunteer in a place like that, a place of love, acceptance, and healing for dogs & humans alike.
Thank you for writing these books, Marta Acosta! I cannot wait for the next book in the series and am sad to have to say, “goodbye for now” to these characters that have come to seem so real & mean so much to me. <3
Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The main character is Maddie who struggles with aspects of her neurodivergent ways. I love her total care for her dogs and attempts to understand humans. She's doing better with recently discovered biological dad, Abel. Maddie studied criminology and is part of the local Search & Rescue teams so she often gets involved with mysteries and murders.
She has been trying to get past her relationship with the local sheriff, Oliver. He went undercover in a previous book and got a suspect pregnant. The suspect made a deal to give evidence if she could stay with Oliver while pregnant. She tries to make it a lasting relationship with him. It's grating to see her with Oliver when she tried to kill Maddie. And to live with the fact Oliver cheated on her. She's happy for Oliver though since he has always wanted children and she doesn't want them. yes, it's complicated.
Maddie finds a dead body of a wine merchant, and then there are more. She works with Oliver on a search for a missing wine seller and his nephew, but mostly she works on her own. One of her employees is worried about the main suspect who used to work for one of the sellers. He has an alibi but can't share it. Maddie thinks he should just share it but comes around to believing he shouldn't and there is another way. Maddie spends considerable time on the case and worrying about others' problems to ignore her own feelings.
Maddie figures things out enough that the killer is after her; Oliver's baby mommy is helping him! Maddie is able to make a break for it, injuring herself but running until she falls. Her dogs find her, so she doesn't die. The obstacles she left for the killer delayed him enough for him to be caught though. The ending was satisfying.
The Coyote Run series has been a huge favorite with me. I would read them in order for the progression and development of many characters. I love the dogs, of course, and Maddie, so I hope we will get more.
Narration: Cindy Kay does an excellent job with the narration. I really appreciate her distinct voices for the characters. I know I enjoyed the story more with her performance. I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.
some editing errors but otherwise a terrific book to read.
Maddy and Oliver are separated by another woman as this story begins. Maddie is a high functioning autistic woman who runs a rehabilitation center for canines, she also is head of a search and rescue team (SAR). Oliver is the sheriff of the county they live in and is bound to a woman carrying his child. But, the two of them keep finding trouble first by Maddie finding the local wine connoisseur murdered in a wine barrel. Oliver must interview her about this murder and things don’t go well. As the story continues the SAR team is called out to locate a prominent citizen and his nephew. Unfortunately, they find the missing couple with one dead. Two deaths, and Oliver and Maddie must communicate about these occurrences which causes Maddie great emotional distress. There is confusion and anger during these times between the two. And the story continues, I hope. This is a well written piece that I highly recommend. The main characters are a lot of fun and interesting to follow. The characters development throughout the books has been great and intriguing. The secondary characters and stories related to them has been fun to follow and engage in and adds some interesting storyline to the main characters lives. The dogs are very much discussed and included in the storyline. I’m hoping that this is not the end of this series and more intrigue and adventures follow. The chemistry between Maddie and Oliver is palpable and worthwhile to read. This book series has realistic real life storyline’s and brings everyday lives together and to the forefront. I’ve rated this book a 4.5 ⭐️ rating because of grammatical errors I noted and some of the speech can be hard to follow. But, this cozy story deserves a chance to be read and to be heard. I hope this series will continue and that the main characters continue to develop as they grow.
This book was filled with angst as Maddie continues to watch Oliver with his new wife and baby. New people come to her ranch and become part of her life. Two wine experts are murdered. Zoe, her assistant manager, coins the phrase “The Caberet Killer.” Zoe asked Maddie to prove that her friend, Tater, was not the murderer. She reluctantly starts researching. At the end, Maddie fights for her life from the murderer. She is rescued by Zeus and Oliver. Spoiler Alert: Bethany runs off and leaves Oliver and Lucas. Maddie and Oliver try to figure things out between them. Kenzie and Dr. Ben are together. Maddie learns to love Abel, her bio father. Relationships come to a satisfying conclusion.
Maddie is the slightly different dog lady. She seams to get mixed up in murders a lot.
Maddie is the lady that trains dogs and used to be the sheriff’s girlfriend. But things fell apart and she is left alone with her sister and friends. Maddie has a tendency to get mixed up in murders and her dogs help her find the clues. She is slightly different and that causes problems with her interactions with people which is why she gets along with dogs better than people.. it also causes problems when she is trying to explain why the clues are wrong. This puts her in lots of danger.
Wow! I just started this yesterday and voraciously finished it this morning! Marta is a writing genius and the way she consistently ties her characters together, is amazing. Maddy’s dialog with herself and her dogs adds another dimension of her character and is a delightful read. Her books are layered with tidbits of facts about a variety of subjects and dogs of course. Thoroughly enjoyed this one and hope another comes out soon! Thank you Marta Acosta!
I am giving this book five stars in spite of my normal "hard marking" inclinations because it is interesting, beautifully written, deeply philosophical, and so loving of Maddie in all her neurodivergent idiosyncrasies. All of the characters are well drawn and the plot almost allowed me to overlook the many mistakes. Most of those mistakes seem to be from careless rewrites where the previous writing was not properly removed or integrated with the final text. Better editing and more beta reading would improve the next book in this series.
The profound use for new words to me made me glad the look up dictionary is available and my ego thinks my vocabulary is massive ! This story is complicated but so worthy of the read. The POV is key in this story and how this individual lives her life and the hardship created by being on the spectrum... I celebrated her wonderful triumphs and especially when she stole Wags... we all face moments we fight to only do right things... Wonderful Read !!!!
I chose my rating because this series of books gave me so much pleasure. Maddie's wicked humour and quirky behavior were so much fun to read about. Her complete devotion to her dogs warmed my heart. I also enjoyed the details in the settings that made me feel like I was there in person. I would recommend these books to any dog lover and book lover.
I loved this book. The odd characters are interesting and Maddie's quirks and intelligence are sad, funny and truly show the reader how it feels to be so different. The bits of knowledge she holds in her mind are random but make you want to know more about her abundant intellect and the wonderful way her mind works. Anyone who also falls into rabbit holes of information will love this book. I hope there is another one in the future.
I absolutely loved this Coyote Run series. Marta Acosta’s depiction of Dr. Madeleine Whitney is a true portrayal of a very bright person on the autism spectrum. The mysteries in each novel are well thought out and keep you guessing up to the end when the murderer is finally revealed. I am a big fan of mystery novels with dogs as featured characters, but too many of them portray dogs doing things that dogs are simply not capable of. That is not the case with the dogs in these books. All of them are true portrayals of well trained dogs actually reacting and behaving in ways that are possible and believable. I highly recommend this series and I wish there were more.
I stumbled across the first book of Coyote Run series by accident and was happily surprised by it. Loved the depth of the character’s personalities and how they developed through the series. No perfect people here! I am a dog person and train therapy dogs so the dogs and their training was not only interesting but accurate and educational. I’ll miss Maddie, Oliver and the dogs. I’m hoping there will be a book 5 in the series!
Maddie is trying to concentrate only on her rehabilitation center and the dogs there. However, living in a small town makes trying to forget Ollie impossible. But, finding a merchant dead behind his wine store brings her in contact with Ollie. She can’t handle that and turns to her dogs and clients. She has to try to find a man and his nephew as well as try to figure out what connects them to the murdered wine merchant.
I am grateful for this fourth book wherein Maddie is still brilliantly unique. I thought the story was a little slow in the very beginning, but i kept going and it was timed excellently. Good arc of the story, quite readable, and hopeful. I hope this is not the end of the series.
This series feels like light reading, but it's so deep.
I'm always sad when the book ends because I want to stay in that head space. As a matter of fact, it's Maddie's headspace, and it's so enlightening. This installment was a treat after a long wait. Looking forward to more. The acknowledgment of our intense connection to canines feels extremely validating. I love it.
I love Maddie and her dogs! She is all that I aspire to be to the dogs in my own life. The is a tee shirt out there somewhere that says, "The more I know people, the more I love my dogs!" That pretty much sums up how I define my philosophy of life . Maddie is a kindred spirit.
This book was an excellent read. I enjoy everything and every line in it. Once again, once I began reading this book, it was impossible to stop reading until I had read every sentence in this book . I really loved the topic and all about learning about the K-9 dogs! Many, many thanks !
Seems like I waited months for this book to finally arrived, I was not disappointed. The writing is amazing the way the author pulls you in and makes you feel every emotion Mad Girl and the other characters are feeling. And I hope this was not the finale. I want the story to go on
I enjoy the complexity of the characters, especially Dr. Maddie Whitney. I love that an autistic adult is featured in a book series. She is interesting, quirky, lovable, and above all, real. I look forward to additional installments in this series!
This series is wonderful. I tried to stretch out my time reading each book. They are all that good. These books are for the people who feel like misfits and the ones who don't. Maddie keeps growing and learning from every mistake she makes and boy has she made some. I cringed for her,I cried for her and I was happy for her. I loved every dog she interacted with.
I’m so sad that this is the end of this series. I absolutely loved every one of these books and cannot fathom how the author came up with all of the thoughts and ramblings that Mad Girl had. She introduced us to the mind of a neurodivergent and it was fascinating. I don’t want to let go of all the characters we were introduced to. She has to write another book in this series!
I thought this storyline was finished and I’d just have to forget about a better ending. However, you did comeback Marta to continue this fascinating story. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, the characters, and the end. Thank you!
The characters, both human and animal, have lots personality and are interesting and memorable. The story has action, humor and lots of dogs, cats and goats.
This story has everything in it that I love about Maddie. She is a force to be reckoned with and she finally gets all she deserves. Her quirks and tics and how she reasons things through are very rewarding. Hope there will be of Maddie and the Center
I love Maddie, Mad Girl and her canine life. It is a wonderful story about someone on the Spectrum. All her observations, quirks, twitched and brilliant mind are charming and captivating: I love reading about her adventures. It’s just the best read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series and highly recommend. You won’t be disappointed- especially if you like search and rescue books with dogs and exceptionally interesting characters.
This story surrounding an odd but brilliant woman who loves dogs and learns to love humans is filled with amazing prose and poetic descriptions. Enjoyed it!
A complexity of life is expressed in this book. People die and People go backward, but life goes on. Dogs help us through life and we find our way. Read and Be ready for the next big thing.
Absolutely a fantastic series. Extremely entertaining….from the first to the last. Marta Acosta is a wonderful, wickedly funny and very engaging story teller. Her characters, both human and canine, have depth and heart.
As usual, the observations made by the MC are interesting and thought provoking. The story line is good. I’m not one to try and figure out the villain, but it was a nice twist. Now, I have to wait for the next book.
