They diluted M'ma's influence by diverting my attention to things like the danger of answering nature's call in the dead of the night. I've got a hint for those of you raised in a less spit-and-scratch world: check before you sit, because chances are that seat is gonna be up. And they don't even have the grace to be embarrassed about it. According to my sweet baby boy, if you're the minority sex in the household, you oughtta be putting it up for them. Sigh.
Having brothers was a mixed bag. When anybody messed with me they were always quick with an offer to beat them up. That was sorta nice, although I personally believe it had more to do with the fact that guys just like to fight than with any towering concern for my welfare. You might think that's cynical but guess who the target was if no one else was around and they were tired of fighting each other? I must've spent half my childhood locked in the bathroom, screaming, "Dad's gonna get you when he gets home." I know, I know, nobody likes a stoolie. But it was either that or have my block knocked off on a regular basis, and trust me, Daddy was the best deterrent going.
A smart woman probably would've gone away to an all-girl school or moved in with some girlfriends at the first opportunity. Me, I got married to my high school sweetie. And the tradition continues. Our only kid (who hasn't been a kid for quite some time now) is the aforementioned sweet baby boy, and except for an Irish setter we had for eleven years a long time ago, even our pets have all been male. I just try to stay afloat whenever I find myself in the deep end of the testosterone pool, and if you don't think that isn't a trial sometimes, I'm here to tell you- it can be hell.
Then again, it can also be heaven. In fact, it mostly is. But listen, don't tell my guys I 'fessed up to that, okay? Trust me, it's difficult enough already, just trying to stay one step ahead of the game.

The first book of the Razor Bay series came out a year back and it introduced us to the hero Max, the half brother of Jake Bradshaw.
Max is a deputy sheriff and he is generally a man of few words. He had to spend his childhood with a mother who wouldn't let the past go, harping on his father who walked out on them for Jake's mother. As kids Max and Jake didn't get along but adulthood and Jake's return is changing all of that.
Harper Summerville is a gypsy, she roams all around the world, a quality she got from her father. And she likes Razor Bay, it's a place she has made friends but she won't stay of course.
I loved the fact that Max was so inept around Harper at first. Polished women like Harper, froze Max, so he gave an impression of not liking her at first. Max is a character you can't help but like, he's a great man who actually wants the white picket fence, loves to dance and is not that comfortable around women.
Harper we also learn has hidden motives, she's in Razor Bay to see if the non-profit Max works with deserves a grant.
I enjoyed seeing Max interacting with troubled teenagers like himself. The romance took time to really get started and Harper's determination to keep moving irritated me but I loved the whole small town effect the book had and the setup for the next book is awesome.

When dour and somber deputy Max Bradshaw meets rolling stone Harper Summerville it is certainly a fun ride. Book two in the Razor Bay series I think was better than the first. Both the hero and heroine are likable. After the last few books I've been reading, this is a change of pace! No the characters aren't too perfect. They have flaws and real issues to overcome. A good read all the way around. I just wish the next book was already here!

Much like the other book I've read by Andersen, this one was good enough to keep me reading, but not good enough to interest me in reading anymore of her books. She comes up with interesting situations and compelling relationship dynamics, but the details in the execution just don't quite work. In this case our heroine Harper Summerville is a rolling stone, spending the summer in Razor Bay to teach yoga and lead excursions at the local inn. Max Bradshaw on the other hand, is a Razor Bay native, who after serving around the world in the military, is ready to return home and set up some roots. Finally reconciled with his half-brother, Max is ready to create some happy memories in the town that had originally held a lot of pain for him.
It took forever to get the main characters together, but at least that was worth the wait. Their big conflict was mostly resolved by the time it surfaced. While it was nice to see the characters being mature adults about resolving their issues, conflict makes a story interesting. Basically, it was slightly above average, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend to anyone.

This was a good second book in the series. In this book you get to find out more about Harper and why she has moved to Razor bay. We also get to find out alot more about Max and how he works with the troubled boys. It was a good story and gave me an update on the characters from the first book but did not find it kept me as hooked as the first book in the series. A good light story but not sure if I will continue in the series. xx

หยิบเล่มนี้มาอ่านแบบไม่ได้คาดหวังมากมายเท่าไหร เพราะแม้เราจะชอบงานเขียนของซูซาน แอนเดอร์เซ่นหลายเล่ม แต่เรารู้สึกจริง ๆ ว่า ช่วงเวลาที่ดีที่สุดของเธอได้ผ่านไปแล้ว เรายังเชื่อในฝีมือการเขียนของเธออยู่นะคะ นั่นคือคิดว่างานเขียนของเธอยังดีกว่านักเขียนหลายคน เรียกว่าอ่านแล้วก็คงไม่ผิดหวัง แต่เราไม่คาดหวังว่า เธอจะทำให้เราตื่นเต้นเหมือนกับที่เรารู้สึกในงานเก่า ๆ ของเธอได้
เล่มนี้ไม่ได้ถึงกับสนุกขนาดเทียบเท่ากับงานแนวโรแมนติกสืบสวนของเธอที่เราชอบมาก ๆ ได้นะคะ แต่เล่มนี้ทำให้เรารู้สึกว่า เธอเขียนเรื่องรักในเมืองเล็กได้มีเสน่ห์มาก ๆ อันที่จริงเล่มนี้ล่ะค่ะ ทำให้เราเริ่มคิดว่า เรื่องแนว Small Town Romance ก็มีอะไรน่าสนใจอยู่นะ (หลังจากอ่านเรื่องแนวนี้ไปหลายเล่ม แต่ยังไม่มีเล่มไหนโดดเด่นชนิดที่ทำให้คิดว่า เรื่องแนวนี้น่าค้นหา)
เรื่องนี้เป็นเล่มที่สองในชุด เข้าใจว่าเป็นเรื่องราวของพี่น้องตระกูลแบรดชอว์ แห่งเมืองเรซอร์เบย์ เล่มนี้เป็นเรื่องของแม็กซ์ พี่ชายคนโต ลูกชายคนแรกของบิดาที่ทอดทิ้งมารดาของเขาไปตั้งแต่แม็กซ์ยังจำความไม่ได้ (แล้วไปมีเมียและลูกใหม่เป็นพระเอกเล่มแรกในชุด ก่อนจะทิ้งเขาไปหาภรรยาคนที่สามในภายหลัง)
เล่มนี้เวิร์คสำหรับเรามาก ๆ ก็เพราะคาแร็คเตอร์ของพระเอกค่ะ ภายนอกแม็กซ์ แบรดชอว์เป็นผู้ช่วยนายอำเภอ รูปร่างสูงใหญ่ แข็งแกร่ง จริง ๆ เขาก็เป็นอย่างที่รูปลักษณ์ภายนอก ชายสมชาย แต่ในเล่มนี้เราได้มองเห็นหลายอย่างเกี่ยวกับเขา แม็กซ์แตกต่างจากพระเอกโรแมนซ์ทั่วไป ตรงที่เขาไม่ได้คิดจะวิ่งหนีความรัก อันที่จริงเขาถวิลหาการมีครอบครัว ใฝ่ฝันที่จะมีใครสักคนที่รักเขาอย่างที่ตัวเขาเป็น ใครที่จะยืนเคียงข้าง ปัญหาก็คือ ในวัยรุ่นด้วยความขบถต่อต้านเพื่อเรียกร้องความสนใจ แม็กซ์ไม่มีเพื่อนมากนัก และในสังคมของเมืองเล็ก ๆ ที่ผู้คนรู้จักกันหมด มันก็ยากที่จะเปลี่ยนความรู้สึกที่ผู้คนเคยมีต่อเขาได้

เล่มนี้เริ่มต้นช้า ๆ แต่สนุกเรื่อย ๆ จนจบเล่มเราพบว่า ตัวเองตกหลุมรักเนื้อเรื่อง คาแร็คเตอร์ และทุก ๆ อย่าง ๆ ในเรื่อง ไปตั้งแต่ผู้คนในเมือง จนถึงการที่แม็กซ์ไม่ยอมปล่อยให้การทะเลาะกันมาเป็นประเด็นขัดขวางการแสดงความรู้สึกของตัวเองออกมา

This is not one of my favorite Susan Andersen books. Although the hero and heroine are totally likeable and the setting was pleasant, it did not have a plot or conflict that I found particularly interesting. The couple are totally in to each other from the moment they meet. And the conflict seems to be mostly that he does not like rich girls and she does not intend to stick around in town. She is in town "undercover" to check out a local home for teenage boys for her family charitable foundation. So she is not totally honest with the hero or with the women she becomes friends with in the town. At some point I even thought - surely this is not the conflict on which this book is based. On the upside the sex scenes were hot.

I enjoyed this. I guess it's the second in a series. But aside from missing how relationships were formed, I felt I was missing nothing. This was just a nice, fun contemporary read. I don't read a ton by this author, but I generally enjoy what I do read. Recommended!

Harper ist im Auftrag der Stiftung ihres Vaters unterwegs, weshalb sie nie länger, als ein oder zwei Wochen an einem Ort verweilt. Razor Bay steht als nächstes auf ihrer Liste, jedoch will sie hier etwas länger bleiben, um ihren Akku wieder aufzuladen. Dabei lernt sie Max kennen, den Deputy der Stadt. Er ist ein wahnsinnig gutaussehender Kerl mit einem außerordentlichen Händchen für Jugendliche mit Problemen. Beide arbeiten ehrenamtlich im Village, um eben solchen Jugendlichen zu helfen und dabei kommen sie sich immer näher...
Die Story wird abwechselnd aus der Sicht von Max und Harper geschrieben. Dadurch bekommt man einen guten Einblick ins Gefühlsleben und in die Gedankenwelt der beiden Protas. Beide sind sehr sympathisch und besonders Max war sehr authentisch beschrieben. Seine Gedanken und Handlungen waren für mich auch besser nachvollziehbar, als Harpers. Sie war manchmal etwas zu glatt für mich. Es ist fast unnatürlich, wie ruhig sie bleibt, wenn man gestritten hat und sie dabei verletzt wurde. Ab und an ging sie mir schon fast auf die Nerven mit ihrer leichten Naivität und dem Hang immer alles schön reden zu müssen...
Das Setting Razor Bay ist als Kleinstadt, wie aus dem Bilderbuche beschrieben: Jeder kennt jeden, Nachrichten verbreiten sich schnell und alles tutti. Wobei alles tutti stimmt nicht ganz. Es gibt schon viele störende Kleinigkeiten, die angeblich stellenweise lange Zeit vorhanden sind. Da störte mich doch, dass auf einmal all diese Probleme gelöst zu sein scheinen.
Insgesamt ein gutes Buch zum Abschalten, wenn man denn nichts Tiefgehendes erwartet 😬

I liked it, seemed like Harper and Max got on well enough to make it through the book. Read this book in one sitting and it was fluffy and sweet. Some like it hot....mmm I'll say. I enjoyed the book and the banter between Max and Harper was hot. Electric. Harper was keeping secrets and let's just say when the cat is let out of the bag it's not pretty.... meow. Four stars of entertainment.
I liked it, seemed like Harper and Max got on well enough to make it through the book. Read this book in one sitting and it was fluffy and sweet. Some like it hot....mmm I'll say. I enjoyed the book and the banter between Max and Harper was hot. Electric. Harper was keeping secrets and let's just say when the cat is let out of the bag it's not pretty.... meow. Four stars of entertainment.

I loved all the characters & the location of this series, and that each character remained active in each story.
Harper was the perfect match for Max to bring him out of shell and help him get past his childhood and have a reason to smile.

I put this one down for a couple weeks because I just want into it. But, by the end I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the depth of the characters, although I would’ve liked to know them more.

When I picked up That Thing Called Love the first book in this series I wasn't sure what to expect. I've tried reading Susan Andersen over the years and have never been able to get into her books. However there was something about this town and this man I had to read.
However as I read Jake's story I found myself drawn more and more to his older brother Max and what drove him. I've waited a year to discover who Max is and what drove him. And I have to say I love Max. For me this book was all about Max. While I knew he had a heroine, I didn't care to know about her. Not like I usually do. So long as she took care of the enormous heart that Max has I didn't care who she was or what she did.
This is a guy who as a small child had his life ripped apart and never put back together. That is until he joined the Marines. Now he's a deputy in the Razor Bay Sheriff's department and having a relationship with his brother for the first time in his life. All through out this book you see how the events in his childhood effected him, and still effect him as an adult.
One of my favorite scenes is Max's birthday. I may have teared up a bit at this scene.
When Max reaches his breaking point and tells Harper for once he wants to come first in someone's life, that just once he wants to someone's number one priority my heart broke for him.
This is one of those books that will fully engage your emotions...at least when it comes to Max. Like I said before Harper wasn't really on my radar as far this book was concerned.
Not that she wasn't a great character, she was. She managed to see to the heart of who Max was and what he needed. Most of the time she was great at it. However when it became serious she panicked and hurt him. BUT she immediately knew how much she hurt him and set about making it right.
This was a good read. It kept me engaged in the story, wanting to know how Max and Harper were going to have their HEA. Then there's the twist that comes along in regards to Max and his brother Jake. A twist I can't wait to see resolved in the next book. I will say to truly understand the relationship between Max and Jake you need to read his book.

What Harper doesn't tell Max, is what her real reason is for coming to Razor Bay. Max feels she is holding something back but can't put his finger on it and when Harper's time in Razor Bay threatens to come to an end, it is time to face some feelings, some truths, some consequences and some possibilities for a future....

But seriously, what a great read that was!! I've always enjoyed Susan Andersen's books, but there was something about the combination of the location and the GUY that got me this time. And I have to admit, I always enjoy it when the heroine isn't a tall slim (ok fine, she was that) blond, blue eyed beauty. I like 'otherness' in either hero or heroine, because 'we' (the readers) like to be able to identify with them.......and Lord knows, we ain't all Barbie!!
The troubled teenage boys were a great highlight in this book. The way they were portrayed and handled respectfully was heartwarming, it did me good.
Harper was NOT a shrinking violet....good on her!!! I absolutely adored that about her. She didn't take any crap, wasn't intimidated, knew how to handle herself in tough situations, was open to trying new stuff and went after what she wanted. Atta girl!!!
Max, if anything, was the more reticent of the two, but boy oh boy, once that man lets loose the passion, grab onto something and hang on for dear life!!! He may not say much, but he sure feels deep and hard...... My kinda guy!

I know I love Susan Andersen. I have read all of her books back to when she was doing pseudo-mystery/romance. I always find it so bad for me that she does not write more frequently enough to put out multiple books per year. That is why I horde her books and that is why I wait so long between books and I think I forget just how enjoyable a read she does put out. This book takes us back again to Razor Bay and it's quaint town, lively folks and once again we see Max Bradshaw, the brooding, hulking Police Officer and Harper Summerville a brown-skinned, trip the light fantastic type of gypsy who unbeknownst to Max and the rest of the central characters is in town to secretly check out a local "Boys Town" type organization in order to decide if the Summerville grant is worth going them. The underlying arc to the story is that Harper has found lots to like about Razor Bay and its inhabitants especially Max Bradshaw. So much so that in stead of her usual stealth observation, for which she normally gets in. Gets out and move on to her next town. She begins to lay tentative roots in this town and starts to tie herself to Max at first sexually and then emotionally.
I very much enjoyed that Ms. Andersen has taken the risk of drawing a mixed race couple and it looks like more is to come if Tasha and Luc's story is any indication (her next book). Ms. Andersen does take a few risks in drawing harper's character that most caucasian authors might muck up. For example. Harper has an "ass". Yes, junk in her trunk, the Full J-Lo, a Twerkers Special whatever you want to call it. She has it. Also her hair is not stick straight but rather a mess of curls which every time a curl was written in I personally felt a jolt of joy. She also wrote very positively about her beautiful skin color. My two pet peeves with the book (which I find in almost all books where the feminine focus is brown or Latina or Black) is that Max was almost always portrayed as some muscle bound, hulking, brooding, non-smiling figure. I do not know why authors who dare to take this risk can not find themselves portraying the male lead as tall, elegant, well educated, well balanced and a lover of the female form. Not just the white female form. Also I felt the conflict was too light, especially given the history of Max's upbringing. For both he and Harper to topple over in resolution so quickly was a bit of a snoozer and I for one would have liked to have seen maybe her bounce outta town on to her next assignment only to have Max show up saying somthing like "Why can't I quit you"!
However my pet peeves are only a small sting in my overall zing of enjoyment in this book. I also feel Ms. Andersen has some fertile ground for future books in some of the young men from Cedar Village as well as in Austin, Jake's son from the first book That Thing Called Love...
So 3 maybe 3.75 stars for this effort and I look forward to downloading my next stay in Razor Bay.

My. Review

Some Like it Hot is the second book in the Razor Bay series. I like this series. Their are a couple of love scenes towards the end that I skipped over. A little swearing. characters that I liked. Some humor and mostly dealings with relationships between half brothers, new couple and girl friends and the community.
Max Bradshaw is a deputy in Razor Bay. He has just started the last few months getting to know his half brother Jake as a brother instead of old habits in their youth. His mom still thinks of him as the one who took his father away.
Max does a lot of volunteer work at Cedar Village a group home for troubled boys. He is trying to get support for the fundraiser pancake breakfast.
Harper Summerville is in Razor bay for some working at the resort. She takes the opportunity to help out at the breakfast and after give him some fundraiser tips, she also volunteers to help out at the ranch. Harper is glad to have a in at Cedar Village. She is hiding her past and full name to see how Cedar Village is run and if they are a good charity for her family's charity to support.
Harper has spent her whole moving from one place to another place. Her mother and brother are glad to stop moving. Harper likes her life. But she is enjoying making friends in Razor Bay and getting close to Max. She fits into Razor bay.
Max and Jake get a surprise guest and learns some interesting information.
It is nice to see the different relationships grow and become stronger to see everyone change for the better.
Fast easy book to relax with. Makes me want to go play in the water and have a bonfire. Just have fun with friends. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I have a good guess who it will be about.

I have read Susan Andersen since she started writing and she never disappoints. Her latest book, Some Like It Hot, is the second one in her Razor Bay series. This book tells the story of Harper and Max a couple who are definitely looking for different things in life. Harper grew up in a world traveling family and cannot imagine putting roots down in one place. Her desire to be a rolling stone has put her at odds with her mother and brother who prefer a more grounded life after years of moving for Harper’s late father’s career. Harper has come to Razor Bay to evaluate a non-profit for troubled boys that has applied for a grant to the foundation her family administers. As part of the foundation guidelines, no-one in town knows who Harper really is.
Max has grown up in Razor Bay and his childhood was not a happy one. His father dumped Max and his mother for wife number two and proceeded to create a new family as if the first one never existed. Max has worked hard to connect with his half-brother Jake after years of animosity. Max’s mother still harbors bitter resentment of Jake and her ex-husband. Max is looking for the white picket fence life that he never had as a child. He finds himself hotly attracted to Harper and turns into a big brick of stiff when he is around her.
I really loved how both of these characters were so secure in their jobs but so insecure about their worthiness to be with the other person. When they finally melt the ice and hook up it is pretty sizzling but also really sweet and funny. Their interactions are so realistic on many levels with each other and with the other characters in the book. Watching them become more involved with each other and with the community was nice. The growing relationship between Max and Jake continues from the previous book and is heartwarming but not soppy. Ms. Andersen has done a great job of integrating the fact that Harper is bi-racial into the story in a way that doesn’t hit you over the head with it but acknowledges it subtle ways throughout the book. There is miscommunication and mistrust on both sides of Max and Harper’s love affair but it is dealt with and as one expects it all ends well. The signs are all there for a romance for Tasha with a late coming new character and I can’t wait to read all about it!

Quick sweet beach read. I liked Some Like It Hot but, if I'm to be honest, it isn't one of my favorites by Susan. I haven't read book one, so I am unable to compare the difference in the way Max and Harper acted in that book compared to this one. However, just an FYI, you can read this as a standalone. I didn't feel the least bit lost. With that, I enjoyed the characters on an individual level; I just couldn't quite grasp the feel of them together. Their chemistry sometimes fell kind of flat and the dialogue sometimes had kind of an out dated feel to it. I don’t quite know what it was about their journey that felt lacking, but it was definitely missing the special something that usually keeps me engaged when it comes to Susan Anderson’s characters.
My thoughts about Harper are those of adoration! I found the fact that she was not the “typical” heroine quite refreshing. Not to mention most authors have the male as the flawed one who can't settle down, it was a nice change to see this in reverse. I loved that Harper was perfectly flawed and thought that she made a fantastic leading female. I didn't always agree with her decisions or actions, but I think that's what made her so easy to relate too. Who hasn't made mistakes and bad decisions in their lives? However, Harper had a major quality I adore that the last few heroine’s I have read about lacked…a backbone! There is nothing better than reading about a sassy take charge type of girl. She was most definitely not afraid to go after what she wanted, which just happened to be Max, after she got past his gruff tough guy facade.

Harper is always on the move, going to new locations to covertly approve organizations to receive her charities assistance. And she likes her life that way. Until she moves to Razor Bay and she falls in love with the town, the boys group home charity she is approving, fast friends, and especially Max. Max has had a very hard life, never having anyone to count on besides himself. He is the deputy of Razor Bay, and his life is very boring and strict, the only joy he has is from the boys group home he volunteers at. Until he meets Harper. But Harper has not been truthful to the people she has come to care about, and it may come back to bite her in the face.
I really like Susan Andersen's contemporary romances. They are fun and at the same time realistic, with issues and characters that you can root for. Harper and Max were no different. Harper is a carefree, very outgoing person who likes moving around, as well as giving back to society. Max is the complete opposite being so closed off and seemingly intimidating, so different from Harper. And the saying opposites attract is definitely in play here. I like how they both fill in needs in the other that they were not even aware existed. Max gives her roots, and Harper cracks his shell. It was a really sweet romance, and I love the HEA that we all know was coming.
This is the second book in the Razor Bay series. It can be read as a stand alone, which is how I read it, and it is a complete story. But the first book is the romance of another couple who are side characters in this book, so it wouldn't hurt to read them in order. There were hints of a relationship brewing between 2 other side characters so I look forward to reading about that which I am sure will be the next book in the Razor Bay series.
Overall very fun contemporary romance, and I really enjoyed it.

Harper is a carefree, very outgoing person who likes moving around, as well as giving back to society. Max is the complete opposite being so closed off and seemingly intimidating, so different from Harper. And the saying opposites attract is definitely in play here. I like how they both fill in needs in the other that they were not even aware existed. Max gives her roots, and Harper cracks his shell. It was a really sweet romance, and I love the HEA that we all know was coming.
This is the second book in the Razor Bay series. It can be read as a stand alone, which is how I read it, and it is a complete story. But the first book is the romance of another couple who are side characters in this book, so it wouldn't hurt to read them in order. There were hints of a relationship brewing between 2 other side characters so I look forward to reading about that which I am sure will be the next book in the Razor Bay series.
Overall very fun contemporary romance, and I really enjoyed it.

Torniamo a Razor Bay per il secondo capitolo di questa serie deliziosa. Dopo l'affascinante fotografo Jake è il turno del fratellastro, il burbero sceriffo Max, di trovare la felicità! ;) Max ha avuto un'infanzia difficile, con un padre che fingeva di non conoscerlo, un fratellastro che aveva tutto ciò che a lui mancava e una madre amareggiata che non faceva che alimentare la sua rabbia. Tornato sulla retta via, ora è lo sceriffo della città, sta cercando di conoscere meglio il fratello e la futura cognata (nonché il nipote), si impegna nel volontariato della casa accoglienza (e i ragazzi ci accompagneranno per tutta la storia...anche perché è grazie a loro che Harper e Max si incontrano!) ma resta un uomo chiuso e introverso, rispettato ma non apprezzato perchè non riesce ad aprirsi. L'arrivo dell'esplosiva Harper cambierà tutto per Max che finalmente riuscirà a interagire non solo con i ragazzi della casa ma anche con gli altri abitanti! XD E' stato quasi tenero vedere quest'uomo grande e grosso che gironzola impacciato intorno alla bellissima ed elegante Harper senza sapere come approcciarsi e sentendosi quasi inferiore ^^'' Max però non si accontenta di una semplice relazione mordi e fuggi o di essere "incastrato" negli spazi vuoti tra i viaggi di Harper e questo metterà in crisi la "ragazza con la valigia" che in realtà non è capitata per caso in quella cittadina e teme i botti che esploderanno con la verità...come sempre oltre ad una bella storia d'amore l'autrice ci regala anche una storia di amicizia, di amore fraterno (e qui ci sarà una bella sorpresa per Max e Jake), di conflitti familiari e del senso di comunità! Aspetto il prossimo capitolo! *ç*

Harper Summerville has had a wanderlust her entire life, and her job checking out charities for her family's foundation has been a good fit for her. When she gets to Razor Bay, Washington, she can't deny that the scenery is beautiful and relaxing and that the people she meets are welcoming. She gets sucked into the community by Jenny, the manager of the Brothers Inn, her fiancee Jake and his son Austin, and Tasha, the owner of the pizzeria in town. One person that she can't relax around is Jake's half-brother, Deputy Max Bradshaw...who is a dedicated volunteer to Cedar Village, the charity for troubled boys she is checking out for her foundation.
Max Bradshaw has had a hard life--his father left him at a young age to be with Jake's mother and after that his father acted as if he didn't exist. He got into a lot of trouble as a child, and wants to set down roots so he can make a difference in the community for boys who have had issues, like he had. Harper believes that if she stays still she'll die, but can her attraction to Max and love for the area and people be enough for her to stay?
I liked this book--it wasn't the best contemporary romance I've ever read, but it was enjoyable and there was enough going on to keep me interested. Even though I hadn't read the first book in the series, I felt like I was able to get to know the secondary characters by reading this book. One thing that turned me off was the cover photo (which is different from the one shown here on Goodreads)--the one on NetGalley looks like it used a stock photo from the late 1980s/early 1990s--this one is better.
Looking forward to reading the next in the series, presumably about Tasha and the mysterious half-brother, Luc/Diego.
