Is the man you love a killer?

I’ve been married to my kind, loving husband Lachlan for over twenty years. He’s my everything. We have two teenage children, a beautiful home and I feel so lucky to live this perfect life. Until my best friend says something that makes me doubt everything…

She whispers it’s strange Lachlan has lived nearby to two unsolved murder cases. First, the murder of the woman in the small, Scottish village where he grew up and more recently the shocking death of a woman who lived round the corner from us. The thought makes my head spin. It’s just a coincidence, surely?

But at home, I can’t help but notice that Lachlan’s becoming angry, not at all like his usual self. It makes me wonder if he’s hiding something from me. It makes me wonder if he could be guilty. I push the thought away, but no matter what, I can’t get rid of this niggle of doubt.

The only way to find out is to go to Scotland and get my husband to face his past. But when secrets start to unravel in the remote Scottish Highlands, I realize the truth is more complicated than I thought, and more than one person could be a killer.

Now my children and I are in terrible danger. And coming here might be the last mistake I ever make.

An utterly addictive psychological thriller that will have you gasping out loud from the master of multiple twists and number 1 bestselling author Daniel Hurst. If you love None Of This Is True, John Marrs, T.M Logan and Freida McFadden you’ll be gripped by The Husband.

Hurst knows how to create stories that keep you hooked from start to beginning. The prologue already tells you that it will be a cat and mouse scenario, a promise that he manages to follow up. You can literally feel the noose around the husband’s neck getting tighter, the tension building steadily. So if you want a pretty standard psychological thriller, this will do as promised. There is even an interesting twist at the end. What I found a bit annoying was the over explaining, with ‘that’s because’ as a precursor to saying something quite obvious. I like to think a bit for myself, thank you very much.

Overall a pretty standard thriller that is neither bad or extraordinarily memorable.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.

Addictive, fast paced, riveting, and hard to put down! Daniel Hurst has entertained, enticed, and captivated with The Husband! Secrets and lies are the name of the game. Just when you think you know someone, you learn that perhaps you really didn't know them at all! This is the 17th gripping book that I read by Daniel Hurst, and he never lets me down!

Jenny and Lachlan have been married for twenty years and have two children. Life is good and they are happy until Jenny and her daughter watch a documentary about an unsolved murder that took place where Lachlan grew up…

This book is told through the intriguing POV's of Jenny and Lachlan. I had a blast reading both of their thoughts. Being able to know what each is thinking was one of the highlights of the book for me. I also loved the pacing, the tension, the unease, the twists, revelations, and mounting sense of danger. Hurst shocked me with the ending which I did not see coming. I love it when he does that in his book!

Fans of Hurst will be captivated by this psychological thriller. Those who have not read a book by Hurst before, this is a great one to start with. It's a bit different from his other books but still has his trademark shocking twists and fast pacing.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Husband is another 5-star thriller by Daniel Hurst. Once again he cleverly creates a page-turner I couldn't put down. This thriller poses the question of how well we know the ones near and dear to us. Can anyone actually escape their past, or will it inevitably come back with a vengeance? This thriller is fast-paced, gripping, and intense! It kept me reading late into the night racing to the shocking and satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend this book to all thriller addicts. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.

The Husband follows dual-perspectives, Jenny and Lachlan, a seemingly-perfect couple, married for the past 20-years. They have two teenage children, Bonnie and William.

When a new documentary releases that features the unsolved cold case murder of a 15-year old girl in a rural-village in Scotland, Bonnie, and the rest of her peers, become obsessed. Even though the crime was committed 25-years ago, the doc has gone viral and everyone is talking about it.

When Lachlan catches Bonnie and Jenny watching it, he has an absolute meltdown. As it turns out the girl was from the same village he fled decades before and has never returned. In fact, he was in the same class as the girl in school.

Jenny is surprised at her husband's reaction. Sure, he hasn't shared much with her about his past, but could this have something to do with it? Was he traumatized by all that happened there, including this vicious murder?

The longer the battle over the documentary goes on, the more Jenny starts to suspect that something is off. Lachlan's behavior is off. Thus, she plans a family holiday to take the kids to see where their father grew-up.

Lachlan is flabbergasted. Why would anyone want to go there? He hated it and vowed never to return, but how can he convince his suspicious wife and true crime obsessed daughter that it's a waste of time?

After arriving in the Scottish Highlands, long-buried secrets begin to come to light and Jenny realizes the truth may be more complicated than she ever anticipated.

Fearing for her life, as well as the lives of her kids, Jenny needs to get them away from this cursed village. How can she possibly do that though, as it seems that the killer is onto them now as well?

The Husband was quick and easy. I've no major complaints, besides the fact that if I ever hear someone say, 'my husband' again, I may throw myself off the closest pier.

This was my first time reading from this author and while I may not scramble to read more, if the opportunity arises, I'm not against it. This is an enjoyable weekend read, though I'm not sure how memorable it'll be in the long run.

It was an interesting idea. These True Crime documentaries that go viral, there have to be unsuspecting people waiting in the wings to be impacted by them all the time. Besides the victims of the family, I never really considered all the other individuals who could be impacted by such docs.

I didn't find this particularly suspenseful, however, it did grow in intensity as the book continued. I might have preferred just to have Jenny's perspective until a bit closer to the end, I'm not sure.

Overall though, this is definitely entertaining and I did have fun with it. Thank you to the publisher, Bookouture, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I'm glad to have given this prolific author a shot!

I really want to love Daniel’s books, I truly do. Unfortunately, I found myself stuck in a cycle of repetition that just felt like going in circles without getting anywhere. To be honest, it didn’t truly pick up until about 80%, and by then, it was over. I even fell asleep while reading—mind you, I wasn’t even tired, aha. So, that's it. That’s my review.

Book #37 for me by the great author Daniel Hurst. If Daniel Hurst writes a book, I’m going to immediately read it. This kept me up into the wee hours at night trying to figure out the ending. Lots of secrets, lies … this has it all. What will Daniel think up next? This is different than his other books IMO and it starts off with a bang immediately!! Leaving nothing to the imagination … well there are a lot of things that now come to mind but holy cow, this was a great thriller. Talk about psychopaths. This one takes the cake. The twist at the end was the icing on the cake. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release and I’m already looking forward to his next great book!

“The Husband”, by Daniel Hurst

a generous 3 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

“My man.”
“We, the females of the house.”
“We, the males of the house.”
“Men are dogs.”
“The noisy herds” (referring to the family).
Goodness! Which year is this?
Husband is watching a game in one room, thinking about things he’s done in his past, about 25 years ago, while at the same time, in the other room his wife is watching a true crime documentary about an unsolved crime that happened 25 years ago. Coincidence?
The wife is completely enthralled by the documentary and becomes obsessed by finding the truth.
The trope: man or woman feels invisible or under appreciated; husband or wife completely unknown to each other; that fever of creating the perfect shocking twist…
The writing was repetitive and the storytelling was quite dull, in my opinion. But there were some thrilling moments, so I can’t say it was boring.
At least I learned new ways of using “I cry”.
But memorable this one is not.

Sorry if I’m sounding like a cranky person, but my choices of books have been pretty frustrating lately. I definitely must take a break from reading crime fiction.

This was my 7th book by this author and my least favourite.

e-book: Kindle (currently included in Kindle Unlimited) 43 chapters, 296 pages (default) - the last 11% of the book was the prologue and first chapter of his book “The Doctor’s Wife”, followed by a list of published titles.

While it was entertaining enough and the premise intrigued me, this has too many plot holes and awkward dialogue for me. I usually like multiple POVs, though here both seemed a little silly and not realistic in the way they thought about things. I hate to give a low rating, and of course, other readers may feel very differently, so it it sounds intriguing, give it a try, It is a quick read.

This book is another winner by Hurst! He has that easy writing style that makes you want to keep on reading! A seemingly perfect marriage that holds horrible secrets! The husband is not what he first appears to be. We learn early on about his past, and then we are carried through some frightening moments. Is anyone safe? Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.

Suspenseful domestic thriller! The antagonist in this story took the phrase “if I can’t have you, no one can” to a diabolical level. I enjoyed the dual POVs, male and female narrators in this audiobook, they really brought life to Jenny and Lachlan‘s characters. If you enjoy domestic psychological thrillers with unhinged, sociopathic MMCs I would recommend this one.

How well can you ever know another person? Jenny and Lachlan have a happy marriage and two children ages 15 and almost 18. Daughter Bonnie is heading to University soon and Jenny wants to spend as much time as she can with her daughter and this includes her daughters penchant for watching true crime documentaries. Mother and daughter watch a show together about a young woman named Paisley who was murdered in a small Scottish village, the same village where dad Lachlan grew up. This begins a domino effect of events that lead to Jenny and her family fearing for their lives.

This book was addicting and exciting and I liked the separate narratives of Jenny and Lachlan. We find out from the beginning that Lachlan has a lot of secrets he is hiding and as Jenny and her family take a family trip to the town where Lachlan was born, everything they thought they knew about their family will change. I liked it that the author created a tight story without crazy and unbelievable twists, so we were able to follow it in a straight-forward way with Lachlan becoming more sinister as time progressed. Jenny was an interesting lead character as she loved her husband and family but was also too intelligent to just dismiss the rumors and suspicions that surrounded Lachlan. Highly recommend this thriller! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC for review.

Daniel Hurst has become a go-to author for me when I want a quick and easy read. The Husband was a decent domestic thriller that drew me in and held my attention throughout. As Jenny slowly discovers the truth about her husband, Lachlan becomes more dangerous, as his past is catching up with him. A suspenseful story with an interesting conclusion.

The plot and characters really intrigued me and kept me wanting to read on but in the end I felt very “meh”. I do read a lot of thrillers so I feel like this plot line has already been done before and that this one didn’t have anything that made it stand out to me. I feel like at times some things were so random and in the end wrapped up in a rushed way instead of neatly wrapped book.

Go into this one knowing it’s a popcorn thriller with lifetime movie vibes. Not necessarily a bad thing but to avid thriller readers you probably won’t love it as much as a beginner to the genre.

I did not fall in love with "The Husband".
💔😭😢💔

"The Husband" was not my favorite husband book.

Nor was it my favorite Daniel Hurst book.

(I have listened to them all!)

I listened to the audiobook.

This 7-hour audiobook was eye-rolling and easily could have been a 4-hour book.

The twist at the end of the book was underwhelming.

The narration by Lucy Paterson and Angus King was superb.

As always this author hooked me in and would not let go. Perfect premise of how well do you really know the ones closest to you and ultimately what would you do to protect those you love. Full of secrets and lies and set using true crime this was a joy to read from start to finish. I guessed early on what the husband secret was but such clever writing and character development had me hooked to see how it would plan out. Such a page turner relatable to other lives events. I like the fallout and the final twist had me feeling like what did i just read. I highly recommend this to any mystery lover. Daniel's style means you may become a reader for life as the novels feel relatively sort and are always well paced. I look forward to the next one. Thanks netgallery and author for this cracking 5 star read

Let's talk about this story. The plot seemed very flat, but I needed some reading like that because I had a busy week, and my mind was in tiny pieces all over the universe.

The story revolves around a woman who begins to suspect her husband of being a killer after her best friend points out that he has lived near two unsolved murder cases. The woman begins to investigate her husband's past and uncovers a number of dark secrets.

1) The plot doesn't have any twist, in case you wait for them.
2) It is an addictive read, yes
3) The characters are well done worked, NO.
4) The final is a complete disaster: YES.
5) Would I recommend this to you? Maybe if, as I said, you want to read something soft and not much elaborated...

Daniel Hurst never disappoints if you are looking for a fast paced, plot driven popcorn thrillers which is UK based. I've always said he is the most similar to Frieda Mcfadden this side of the Atlantic.
This one was slightly different in that we get a dual POV Jenny (the wife) and Lachlan (the husband). Jenny who is in the dark knowledge wise and Lachlan who is the sinner in this story. Lachlan is open (to us the reader) about that fact, which is why this book is different to most. It is not about who is the killer, it is about how he got away with it and will he continue to get away with it. It's about us knowing the truth when all the others don't!
This cat and mouse game from the mouse's point of view i guess? Will have you turning the pages quickly and perhaps even secretly routing for The Husband!
Full disclosure wasn't a big fan of Jenny, I didn't find her very believable especially at the end! Please!...

The husband by Daniel Hurst
Genre: Mystery thriller
Publication date: January 20th 2025

I was hooked from the getgo! Honestly my 2025 mission is to read his entire back list! As someone who entered thriller with Freida; Daniel has won me over FAST his writing style is so gripping even if you can guess where the story's going! With that being said the plots were twisting till the very last page! Highly recommend this short page turner!

I’ve read a few books by this author, and enjoyed all of them! When I saw this one, I had to jump right on it, and it was just as good as the others. The vague synopsis is what pulled me in, and there isn’t much I can say outside of it.

This story deals with a family: Jenny and Lachlan, and their teenagers, Bonnie and William. A new true-crime documentary is taking the world by storm, and one night Jenny and Bonnie start watching the mystery of a 15-year-old girl who was killed in a tiny Scottish town, 25 years prior. When they realize it’s the same small town Lachlan grew up in, they ask him about the girl. He gets oddly angry, and says that murder is one the reasons he left that town and never went back.

That week, Jenny is out to lunch with friends, who are also watching the documentary. They have one friend missing though, Teri, who was killed in her home. When Jenny’s friend Elaine makes an offhand comment about how odd it is that two unsolved murders happened when Lachlan lived in the town, it gets Jenny thinking…that they should go to Scotland and see where Lachlan grew up. He’s furiously against the idea, but agrees when he realizes the trip would be beneficial for him with an issue he’s been having.

The book is written from the points of view of Jenny and Lachlan, and is a very quick story with a decent mystery. I wouldn’t say anything in it blew my mind, but it was written well and I really liked the ending. This is a great afternoon read, perfect for cozying up in front of a fire! Four stars.

This book was a fast-paced read—intriguing from start to finish. The husband is truly unhinged, and the journey throughout the story was engaging, leading to a satisfying ending. It was definitely a good read! However, realistically, Angus should have reported Lachlan from the beginning. It’s also a bit unbelievable that no one in the town reported Lachlan as a suspect who was a local in the village who left right after the crime happened back in the day.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. In "The Husband," Hurst delivers a thrilling and compelling domestic suspense novel. This tale delves into the complexities of marriage, family, and human relationships.   "The Husband" would make a great addition to the reading list of readers seeking a page-turning and suspenseful experience.

The story introduces readers to Lachlan and Jenny, a married couple, along with their teenage children, William and Bonnie. They seemed like the perfect family, however that facade crumbled when Bonnie developed an interest in a true crime documentary. The documentary focused on an unsolved murder that occurred twenty-five years ago in a small Scottish town.  The same town where her father grew up. Lachlan was displeased with his daughter's interest in the documentary and did not appreciate the questions that arose from her fascination with the twenty-five-year-old case. The situation worsened when his wife, Jenny suggested they visit the town for their next family vacation as she desires to learn about her husband's past. The events which followed gave rise to several thrilling and suspenseful moments.

The Husband showcases aptly that one never truly escapes their past, a truth Lachlan will learn. The themes of secrets, lies and deception permeated the story. You think you know someone, only to learn after twenty years of marriage and two children later, that you never really know them.
.
Hurst did a good job with building tension, pushing the reader to dive deeper into the story to discover how it would all unfold. The dual POVs narration aided in amplifying the tension. Hurst kept the reader wondering with each page turn if the truth would come to light. The twist at the end came as complete surprise, but it made the whole reading experience worthwhile.

Overall, The Husband was a fun and entertaining read. Fans of psychological thrillers may wish to add this one to their reading list. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

The Husband by Daniel Hurst is a book you can't put down! I read The Husband in half a day and it was beyond thrilling! If you've read a Daniel Hurst book in the past then you know what you're in for. A fast-paced, action-packed, suspenseful story with twists along the way! Lachlan and Jenny have been married for 20 years. They have 2 children, Bonnie 17 and William 15. They look like the perfect family, but are they? One evening Bonnie tells her mom she wants to watch a new true crime documentary. Lachlan and William are watching football in another room. As the documentary starts it's about the murder of a 15 year old girl in a small town in Scotland. Jenny is shocked to see that the town is the same one that Lachlan is from. He would've been 15 at the time of the murder so he must've known the girl. How has he never told Jenny about it? He's very secretive about his childhood and seems to want to forget it. Why?

When Lachlan comes out from watching football he sees a picture on the tv he hasn't seen in 25 years. Why is her picture on tv and why are his wife and daughter watching it? He gets very angry that they are watching this documentary and tells them to turn it off. Lachlan isn't one to yell at their children and everyone notices that he's very upset. Why would the documentary make him so angry? When one of Jenny's friends makes a comment to her, Jenny takes pause. Is her husband the wonderful man she thinks he is or is he something else? Is she in danger? Are her kids in danger? Why won't Lachlan answer any questions about his past?

Jenny decides they should take a long weekend and go to Lachlan's hometown so that he can come to terms with what's bothering him. Why is Lachlan trying to get out of the trip? Why does he refuse to stay in his hometown and will only go if they stay outside of town? This book is fantastic and you will be racing to get your questions answered! I rate The Husband 4 stars with a high recommendation. The book is now available so kick back and enjoy the ride! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Husband in exchange for a fair review. Daniel Hurst has done it again and I can't wait for his next book! #TheHusband

Lachlan is a husband and a Dad

But he is also a lot of other things, pretty much an Incel and now he is reacting very badly when his family suggest going back to visit his childhood home and village in Scotland

The very place that a real life documentary about an unsolved murder is currently airing on TV and causing much speculation around the Country and on Social Mefia

Can Lachlan avoid going or will his past ( and present come to that ) be forced on him by his innocent of his deeds family

You know I love a Daniel Hurst book and the writing, pace, tension and the trademark end of chapter cliff hangers, well this is all here in spades and although maybe a bit repetitive in parts as always is a fine read and has the ability once again to change characters in the book lives when one of them does something ( or has done something in the past ) that alters everyones lives in a second

Jenny’s cozy family evenings take turn when she and daughter, Bonnie, tune into a true crime documentary about a young girl’s unsolved murder in Scotland. As the chilling details unfold, Jenny notices her husband, Lachlan, reacting rather oddly—sweaty palms, anyone? With the story hitting so close to home (literally, Lachlan’s hometown!), Jenny’s curiosity morphs into a full-on investigation, leading her down a rabbit hole of secrets that could put her family in a precarious position.

The novel kicks off with a gripping prologue that spills some major tea right away, setting a suspenseful tone.

The dual perspectives let us peek into both Jenny’s and Lachlan’s minds. Jenny’s obliviousness to Lachlan’s glaringly obvious guilt was exasperating. Meanwhile Lachlan’s over-the-top reactions made it pretty obvious he was as guilty as sin! Not gonna lie, I found it hard to root for either of them.

While the first half has a bit of déjà vu with repetitive thoughts and conversations, the latter part ramps up the action, making it a real page-turner.

However, knowing the big secret early on does dial down the mystery, making the ending somewhat predictable.

Despite these quirks, it’s a breezy read with a small cast, perfect for a quick read.

The Husband is an addictive, consuming and compelling read.
Daniel always gives his reader a gripping story with a twist that grabs you and makes you have a sly grin when finished.
A true crime documentary on streaming is the talk of the town.
Twenty five years ago a teenage girl was murdered and the crime was never solved.
For Lachlan and Jenny and their two kids, Bonnie and William, it’s about to change their lives in the most unexpected way.
With secrets, lies and deception, who is hiding the truth.
Fast paced with lots of tension to put you on the edge of your seat, wondering what’s going to happen next.
Writing, pacing, plot, characters and his trademark shock ending, it’s all here to be entertained by.
