Train hard, follow orders, and never question why. But after a mission to infiltrate an enemy territory goes horribly wrong, he wakes up in the body of a spoiled noble mage from the very world he’s been taught to hate.
Magic? He’s never touched it, and now everyone expects him to master it like a pro.
Trying to survive in an elite magic academy surrounded by classmates who seem to know far more than he does, would be hard enough—yet Damien’s real identity as an assassin is the least of his problems. Between botched spells, awkward encounters, and people calling him by a name that isn’t his, surviving magic school might actually be more dangerous than his old job.
Can Damien bluff his way through magic class, deal with aristocratic drama, and keep his secret from getting out? Or will he set a new record for the worst student ever?
Really enjoyed this book, such an interesting premise
The MC is an orphan taken in by a ruthless assassin Lord and tasked with a difficult mission. He fails due to sabotage and instead finds himself body swapped with his target's son. This dude is a real wanker, a sociopath despite a loving mother and wealthy noble family.
The premise of the story is quite interesting and even though they dont get alot of stage time the villian is relatable or at least understandable due to his backstory. He's still a ruthless and despicable character though.
The story is a fast, easy read with good descriptions and a coherent framework for the magic system. Can't wait to read the next installments as the MC is awakening precog abilities.
The only suggestion I have is to request better artwork for the cover. The current cover doesnt convey anything about how good the story is and I almost passed this book by because of the "feel" from the cover artwork.
I listened to an omnibus of books 1-3 and got most of the way through it before dropping this series. If this had not been an omnibus I would have stopped after book 1 for lack of story resolution. If anything book 2 was worse in that regard essentially stopping in the middle of a scene.
I am only giving this book 2 stars instead of 1 because the page to page story telling was fine. Not great but fine. In addition to the lack of story resolution the author also has pretty much every woman in the story pine for the MC. Personally I consider that terrible story telling but compared to most who go down this road the author at least shows some restraint. For example, the MC only sleeps with one of his maids instead of all three.
The author also uses stupidity as a story device, although this really only became unbearable for me in book 3. First the author has the MC’s father attack the MC because father thinks the MC maybe forbidden magic, something the father could have checked by simply having the MC display his magic. Worse the MC calls this stupidity out. If you are an author having one character discuss the stupidity of another character then maybe just write something better.
Next the MC is attacked by a monster that causes the MC to go crazy and attack people. Upon recovering the MC is told something like that happened so he heads out to see the professor who stopped him to get some answers. However, before the MC gets anywhere a girl asks him out on a date. Do you think the MC says “Let’s go out tomorrow I’m trying to find out why I went crazy and passed out for a day right now”? Nope. MC goes on a date. Worse, none of this should have even been written since the professor was present when MC woke up and should have act like any reasonable person and just told the MC what was going on then.
The story: The world is divided into cultivators and mages. Each have their own country and they somewhat hate each other. MC is a street rat turned into an assassin by a cultivator. Cultivator’s daughter, for no apparent reason, falls for MC so cultivator sends MC on a suicide mission to assassinate a very powerful mage. MC interrupts mage’s son performing a forbidden ritual which results in a body swap. Since body swapping magic is unheard of no one believes the son. As a result MC in son’s body goes to magic school in son’s place. MC learns magic and gains visions of potential futures that allows him to prevent disasters. The rest of these books is basically about MC’s time at school and visions of the future.
This book was just OK. The overarching premise is actually really interesting, but the pacing was just average and the book is quite short and left me wanting.
The MC is an orphan that has been raised by one society (elven?) as an assassin. It's a cultivation society. His liege is sending him on a mission to assassinate someone in another country (human) that uses magic instead of cultivation. While infiltrating towards his target, he interrupts a boy casting a spell, and a body swap happens. Now the MC is in the body of his enemy. When his body, with the boy's mind in it, is questioned, it releases a death work in the brain that kills the MC's body, leaving him now in the body of his enemy. He knows zero magic, but is off to a magic academy. How will he handle it?
The LIs are a few, but only the maid has been consumated. I've always felt the MC bedding his maid is a bad cliche, and it really feels like the author felt the need to work a sex scene into this book, so picked the maid to satisfy that need. The scene is clumsy, and not just because it's two virgins having sex. There are two others that are likely, but he's gotten nowhere with either so far.
The book ends with the MC showboating skills way above what his body is known for so he can win some magic basketball game. Again, it feels like the author felt the need to make sure the MC appears more powerful than he is so he can be cool. It didn't add anything to the story other than one of the potential LIs calling him out as not being his true self as the book ends.
I'll read the next one, but I suspect I will be disappointed.
Reasonable first entry to the story. There were some plot points that sucked because of the awkward starting but it works well once you get into the storyline.
Interesting body swap situation. Academy setting with game that remind3d me of the game from Harry Potter series. Decent magic system and flashes of foresight. And the cliffhanger ending. It's surprisingly good.
Better than I expected based on the cover, but not a 5. This one is a strong-weak-strong MC and rapidly turns into an academy (magic school) book. Nothing very original, but overall well-executed and an easy read. I'll read book 2 on the strength of this one.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and entertaining. The story and characters were incredibly interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is definitely worth checking out.
Kept me reading from page one to ending. Rarely do I find a book that piques my interests and balances a competent MC with a challenging story. Keep it up Jin. I’m locked in
This is my first book I read by this author and it made a great impression. It is relatively unique in this genre, it is well written, and I really enjoy the characters. What more can you ask for.
If it wasn't for the fact this book was a 6 hour read, i'd have given it full stars. I rather enjoyed the story, too bad it felt like only half a bloody book. It was monstrously short even for harem fantasy. The author should be ashamed of themselves.
You've got to get through the illogical bits at the start.. like how do noone question the correlation between vast personallity change, and someone screaming about body swapping. And honestly the dialog is kinda cringe for the intimacy scenes, so the can be skipped for the most part.
