“Everyone experiences it in different ways and for different reasons. The most important thing to remember is that your journey is unique and you must allow yourself to grieve at your own pace.” This really resonates with me.
Patricia Sands has written a heartfelt story that I read from start to finish without putting down. This story pulled me in right from the start. So many emotions as I read, tears, laughter, loss, grief, joy. Family not by blood and friendship as Libby deals with her husband’s dementia diagnosis. Her puppy that she has named Chance has given her unconditional love and a second chance to be happy again.
I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.
" Chance. That's what I'm naming him. I suddenly feel he's given me a chance to be happy again"
Libby and Don Moore lived in Florida and retirement - or rewirement- was going well until Don's dementia required enough care that he was transferred to a care facility. And in a way, Libby tried to keep busy but her son and his family were in Australia and she was at loose ends until she was asked to caretake their new puppy until they returned.
Enter Chance, a golden retriever puppy who soon is the focus of Libby's life. Little did she know exactly what she and her two cats had taken on, but everyone adapted even when her son's short term assignment began to change into a more permanent one.
Not only does Chance heal some of Libby's losses he helps open her world more. And in doing so even helps Don and the care facility's other residents.
I am a really big fan of Patricia Sands' work. This book is quite different from most of it and the simple story draws you into characters' lives you wish were your friends and neighbors. When she announced this book I jumped on it and read it in less than 24 hours. [As a former nursing home administrator I also wished all homes were as nice as the one Libby's husband was in as well ] Thank you Patricia for taking a "chance" on this story. Highly Recommended. 5/5
“A New Leash on Life,” the ninth book in Patricia Sands’s Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series, follows retired couple Libby and Don Moore. As they age, Libby and Don face challenges, including Don’s early dementia. Amidst this turmoil, their ten-year-old rescue cats, Max and Mimi, provide comfort. Don and Libby have a son, Matthew, his wife, Amy, and two grandchildren, Jack and Kate. Their family supports Don during his illness. After Don moves to full-time care, Matthew learns his family will move to Australia for three months. Suddenly, Libby realizes she’ll be alone. Her grandchildren reassure her they’ll return with an 8-week-old yellow Labrador retriever puppy. Matthew asks Libby to care for the puppy for three months. Libby, who’s never cared for a dog before, wonders how this will work. This book evoked strong emotions. It made me contemplate various losses in life, from children leaving home to parents passing away, friends aging and suffering illnesses, and the loss of a life partner. This exceptional book is thought-provoking, evoking happiness, sadness, and a sense of connection to the characters.
A New Leash On Life by Patricia Sands is the final story in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series. The yellow larador retriever puppy in this story touched so many hearts while helping people mend from their traumas. This book wrapped up the questions of Leslie, the dog breeder. Very enjoyable.
Book 9 and the final book in the Dragonfly Cove series.
Meet Libby. She just had to make the hardest decision of her life. Then, her son and his family are being temporarily relocated to Australia, but not before they beg Libby to taking the puppy they are adopting until they return. Libby is not a dog person but can’t say no to her family. Libby falls in love with Chance and is heartbroken when he goes missing.
This story while packed with different emotions, it shows how dogs can heal us and bring people together. This story showed how a little kindness goes a long way and can change lives. This has the best ending for the series, bringing a satisfying ending to this adorable litter and their humans.
I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest opinion.
In A New Leash on Life, Libby has been caring for her husband for three years. When their son is transferred to Australia, he asks his mom to pick up the family’s new dog. Despite never being a dog owner, Libby cannot refuse her grandchildren’s pleas. As Libby accepts Chance into her life, she suddenly finds life more fulfilling as the dog heals some of the losses she has suffered. I was thoroughly engage in this inspiring story as Libby makes new family and discovers new directions for her energies. Chance is an amazing comfort at the facility where Libby’s husband Don now lives.
A New Leash on Life by Patricia Sands is book nine and the final book of the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series. I am a fan of Ms. Sands and could not wait to read her contribution to this series. It was so heartwarming and really brings us the importance of family whether it is a natural family or one we build around us.
This book is about Libby and Chance. Libby has had to put her husband into a care facility because of dementia. Her son and family get transferred out of the country. She is asked to take their puppy until they return home. Libby has two cats and has always been a cat person. Can she take in a puppy? She does it for her grandchildren. She names the dog Chance and his name takes on a few different meanings. I’ll let you read the book and figure out what meaning they take on for Libby.
I love the family that Libby builds around her now that her life has changed so much. She has an interesting life and I loved reading about all the positive changes she makes to give her life meaning. Chance is a bit of a wild child but has a deep understanding of those that need him in their life. He makes life interesting for many people that he comes in contact with.
If you love a great series and dogs, you will love this series. Please download the first book in the series entitled Pick of the Litter. It is FREE and will give you a taste of what each book is about. You will want to binge read these books. It is hard to put them down. I wanted to go from one to the next. Until next time…Happy Reading!

Upon a diagnosis of dementia, Libby’s husband eventually must move to nearby Serenity Palms, a care facility where he’ll receive necessary care. Libby, a retired librarian faithfully visits him each week, however, she manages to keep herself busy with friends, playing tennis, and even making new friends who become more like family. Mathew, her son, and his family are in line to get a Labrador puppy, however, since his job has taken him, and his family, to Australia, Libby is asked to pick up the pup when he’s ready to leave the breeder’s care. Libby has no experience with dogs and has two cats living with her. She is very apprehensive, and worried about keeping the dog, even for two months until Mathew and family return. When the time comes to pick up the dog, she is surprised how she is drawn to him. Libby names the sweet pup Chance, as she feels he has given her a second chance at life. Even her two cats eventually accept Chance and even befriend him. During a few minutes in time when Libby leaves Chance alone in the fenced front lawn, she discovers he is gone, and the gate is slightly open. She is quite certain the gate was locked, but regardless, her beloved Chance is gone. The eventual return of Chance a few weeks later proves to be life-changing for not only Libby, but also for Rosie, a young girl who rarely speaks and who lives with her grandmother. This is a charming, heartfelt story that found its way into my heart from the beginning. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are my own.
A New Lease on life is an amazing heartfelt story. If I could I would give this story 10🐾 & 10 ⭐️❤️
Libby and Don Moore life took a turn that neither saw coming; life through them a curve ball instead of growing old together they were loosing each other to Don’s dementia. That was three years ago and things had changed again with the help of her son they made the decision to move Don to a facility close their home in Dragonfly Cove & Libby was retiring from the elementary school she was the school librarian. Her Good friend told her to think of this time as rewirement not retirement that yes it will be hard without Don but life goes on & Don would want her to live it. This group of friends have all had life struggles & they supported each other. Matthew her son and family were leaving for 3 months for a work project in Australia & the week they come back to Dragonfly Cove they were getting a puppy; Libby soon found out when she went to visit them she found out the project was going to keep them there another 3 months so when she returns Libby was about to become a temporary Dog owner; at least she thought. Chance came into her life & brought so much love back into her life. I could say so much more but i don’t want to ruin the rest of the story and all the surprises to come. Patricia Sands has the touch of weaving a relatable life story & you become a part of her stories, fall in love with the characters & wish they were your friends. I’m looking forward to reading the other 8 books.
This is the last book in a series of short, easy to read books about the puppies from a litter born in Florida. All of the new puppy parents live in the same small town. The books are all related, but the reader can read only one or all of the books, in order or not. But to get the fullest enjoyment, they might be read in order since there is mention of other characters from one book to another.
In this book, Libby has found out that her beloved husband Don has early onset dementia, which is progressing quickly. Their son and his family have been helping, but the son's job has moved the family to Australia for 3 months, with extensions possible. Don needs more care than the family could provide and he has moved into a wonderful care facility just as Libby is being left alone. The son's family had been on a waiting list for a puppy and their puppy was almost old enough to be adopted as they were leaving the country. Libby, who always considered herself a cat person, was persuaded to adopt the dog and to raise him until the family comes back. She is filled with trepidation, but quickly learns how wonderful puppies are.
Chance, as she's name the dog, brings joy, new friends, and new purpose to Libby's life.
This is a sweet story that is filled with happiness, friendship, and love. Although some life issues, such as dementia is part of the story, this book can be read and enjoyed by almost anyone.
Each of the books in the Dragonfly Cove series tells the story of one of the characters whose life is changed when they adopt a pup from a special litter of nine Labrador retrievers. From puppy training to obedience class and outings to the local dog-friendly establishments, there are blessings and challenges along the way. One thing is sure – they will never be quite the same.
Libby Moore’s life has dramatically changed in the last three years. Her husband has recently been moved to a care facility due to the progression of his early onset dementia. She’s retired from her job as a school librarian, and her son and his family accepted a temporary job assignment in Australia. When that job is extended and delays their return to Florida, they ask Libby if she’s willing to stand in for them and take care of the puppy they had already committed to adopt.
She’s not sure how her two cats will react, but she can’t bear to disappoint her grandchildren and agrees to take the dog. On the day she picks up the pup, she is surprised by the immediate affection she feels for him. She names him Chance because she feels like he’s giving her a chance to be happy again. Little does she realize that opening her heart to this sweet animal is going to open other opportunities for love and connection that she couldn’t have imagined.
A New Lease on Life by Patricia Sands, the final book in the Dragonfly Cove series series. The beautiful story of Libby and Chance and how she, a cat lover became the proud owner of the most wonderful pup and how he filled her life with new adventures and people to love. Libby’s life takes a drastic turn when her husband Don is diagnosed with dementia and all the plans they had for a future filled with family and travel came to an abrupt end. Then her son Matthew tells her his job is transferring him to Australia and he is taking his family and her grandchildren along for the adventure. When his stay is extended he asks her to keep the puppy they planned to adopt for three months until they return. During her adventures into puppyhood she falls in love with Chance and he begins to heal her heart until he disappears one afternoon from her yard. She’s devastated and lost, he is finally returned but brings along with him Rosie, a little girl who has had a difficult life for her young years and her grandmother Matilda. I won’t tell you everything but it’s worth reading for the heartwarming moments that follow. The series ends with a surprise and loving occasion that brings everyone back together again to celebrate their special relationships with each other and the dogs that saved them.
This was truly a lovely read to finish off the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series, with the ninth installment, a heartwarming story presenting Chance at his best. The storytelling is about Libby Moore a retired librarian who also lives in Dragonfly Cove. Libby is having a bit of a difficult life and Chance the labrador puppy comes her way. Libby needs that special companion, her husband Don suffering from dementia is in a home and her son Matthew and his family are in Australia. When unexpected things happen and being life changing, the story unravels and Libby takes this opportunity in caring for Chance. Libby will at the same time start educating Chance and this takes her on new adventures. It will in turns give her the possibility to meet new people that become more than just friends. Libby's has a new purpose in life the amazing connection between her and Chance. Libby also gets to know other people that she hadn't expected. You could really say that this yellow fluff ball saves Libby and gives her a totally different life from what she has been used to. It is really such a lovely story and it's a book that makes you think how you could make a difference and live it to the fullest. I really enjoyed reading this book and I can definitely recommend it, the ending of a lovely series of books! I'm grateful for the opportunity to have read this book. Charlotte N
A Moving Ending. Yet again packing quite a bit of story into such scant page count, this is a great ending to this series that gives an epilogue of our dog breeder Leslie's adventures while also telling a compelling story of life after your long time husband has been diagnosed with dementia. It *also* manages to spend the most time out of the United States than any other book, and only Collar Me Crazy, book 2 of the series, spends more time outside of Dragonfly Cove itself.
And yet the tale here is still absolutely centered around Dragonfly Cove and this most recent litter of puppies from Leslie. Here, Chance gets his time to star as the central puppy of the story - and yes, once again (as is so often in this series) he tends to steal the scene most times he's around.
Again using an elderly main character (as the previous book, Teacher's Pet did), this tale does a remarkable job of showing both blood and found family and how they all come together. Truly a great tale in a small package, and yet again more evidence of how page count doesn't give any indication of just how good a story is, with this one clocking in just over 150 pages.
A wonderful addition to our new series! Tales That Will Leave Paw Prints on Your Heart

Libby picks up baby chance, as a surrogate for her son and their family. As things change for her son, she ends up keeping Chance. Since she’s grown to love him, this is Wonderful news. Libby started taking Chance to see her husband in the nursing home. Then the unthinkable happened. Chance took off out of the yard and was lost . Heart in throat, she misses her precious pup. Libby has lost so much. Her hubby to dementia, her family in Australia for the next year. Will Libby get Chance back? What’s happened to Chance? Sometimes good things happen out of bad. Is that the case? Finish the story to find out. I’m a little sad, as this is the last book in this series. I’ve had so much fun reading them, and I’m sure you will as well. Trust me, you don’t want to miss even one book. What a ride! I’ve not had so much fun reading them. Happy reading. Faith
This was the perfect book to end the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series. I really enjoyed reading Libby's story. Chance came into her life after she had retired and her husband, Don had been diagnosed with dementia. She was lonely, dealing with her own grief, and facing retirement in a totally different way than she and her husband had planned.
I liked how by chance, the golden retriever, Chance came into her life and opened doors for her with special, cherished friendships. It was a very special story with wonderful, special characters, two cats, and of course, Chance. I liked how Libby not only retired but rewired her life and became less lonely and so much happier than she was when the book first began.
The puppy in this book and the other books in the series were very inspirational for their owners and what they were going through. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
A New Leash on Life is the last book in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park Series. By Patricia Sand, Chance is not the last puppy chosen from the litter, it is just that his story is last in the set of novellas. The day of puppy pick-up finds Chance’s family out of the country, so the kids’ grandmother agrees to puppy sit for the three months until her son and family returns.
This is such a great story about a grandmother who has my heart but also my sometimes reservations about some tasks. She has agreed to help out, but it becomes a big job, being one on top of some other family responsibilities that she has, A great story of grief, healing, unconditional love and new life too. A lovely story that resonates with us all.
Perhaps it is best to read in order because there are glimpses of Libby and Chance showing up in them. Be sure to purchase the first book, Pick of the Litter, which is an overview of the entire series. Right now, it is free.
This is the last book in a series of nine, from eight different authors, all of whom are tasked with writing about a different pup from the same litter. This has been a wonderful series and I thank all of the authors who allowed me to read them ahead of their pub date for an honest review in return! I recommend the whole series. But this one resonates with me the most. Libby is losing the love of her life to dementia, and her son and his wife are temporarily relocating to Australia for his profession. She is asked to take in the puppy that her son’s family was planning on adopting, just until they can return home to Dragonfly Cove. Of course she accepts, and Chance comes to live with her. Chance is a very active dog but incredibly sensitive to the needs of those at the care facility where Libby's husband is now living. There is a lot of emotion in this book and as the story unfolds, both Libby and Chance realize that they were destined to be together. Wonderful story.
Libby is a hardworking librarian and care giver to her husband Don who was diagnosed with early onset dementia. She took care of him for over three years until she could no longer. When retirement came Libby thought she would be able to have free time and maybe travel a little. But when her son phones and asks her to take care of their puppy while they are in Australia for work. When she meets Chance the sweet little puppy, she is drawn to him and is ready to see what this little boy can do. They go on an adventures that show how much fun life can be . Libby is one of those characters that you see and instantly have an awe for her . She has worked hard and taken care of her husband and family. She keeps herself busy with friends and family . When she meets Chance and things change for everyone. She know how it feels when you loose someone. She is a sweet woman with a heart as big as you can imagine. Chance is the sweetest little guy and loves to bring everyone together . This is the final story in the series and honestly one of the sweetest stories . You really get to feel what the characters are going through all the way through the story. The author is a new author to me so I am going to check out her other books . This series will make you laugh. cry and believe that dogs are heaven sent to give us unconditional love and understanding.
Sweet finale for this series with the perfect ending!
Libby is lonely and has more time on her hands now that her husband Don had to move to a memory care facility. So, when her son and grandkids ask her to pick up and take care of their new puppy while they are working and living in Australia, she reluctantly say she will. What will her 2 cats think of this interloper? But Chance soon steals her heart. How can she give him up to her son and his family when they come home? What will happen when disaster strikes? Read this to find out.
The pace is engrossing and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with a character centered storyline. The characters are vivid and endearing. Chance is a wonderful character who really makes the story shine! This is a sweet finale for this series with the perfect ending. Enjoy this series in order.
This is a great conclusion to the series, but I do recommend that you read them all from the beginning. Libby’s husband has dementia and is in a nursing home. Her son and his family are in Australia for his job. They had planned to get a Lab puppy, but the job is extended and they ask Libby to get the puppy for them. Libby has 2 cats and wasn’t planning on adding a puppy, but Chance has a way of working his charm on everyone, even the cats. Then Chance disappears and Libby is distraught, but several days later, her vet calls to tell her Chance has been found. The situation behind his disappearance and those she meets because of it bring about new opportunities. It’s a very nice story of hope, and it also wraps up Leslie (the puppy-breeder’s) story. Thank you to the author for the ARC; all opinions are my own.
Animals and children Ms Sands is the first author in this series to offer a detailed backstory to a potential puppy owner: necessary to understand Libby’s reluctance in accepting Chance, the last puppy in the litter. It is a heart-rending story of learning to adjust to a life affected by spousal dementia and, once again, the role of a canine companion in giving support and comfort. Although this book was read with the anticipation of the trauma Libby would experience (as it was mentioned in “Loyal and True”), it was nevertheless riveting to read it from her point of view and all pet owners will empathise with her. including six-year-old Rosie into a pivotal role in the latter part of the story sealed this as a 5-star novella. The series was given a resounding farewell in the epilogue 😊
Libby is stepping in and temporarily taking her son’s puppy while he is working in Australia. She is more of a cat person, but it is only for a little while. Of course, her puppy, Chance, quickly becomes part of the family. Even the cats eventually accept him. One day, Chance got out of the yard and she frantically looking for him along with most of Dragonfly Cove. The vet called that Chance was found and the situation of his disappearance was unique. However, it presented new opportunities for Libby. She has new friends and hope for the future. A wonderful must read! I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however, I voluntarily wrote an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
This is the 9th book in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park Series. It is the story of Libby and Chance. Libby and Don have had a wonderful marriage until Don gets early onset dementia. Libby is learning how to live alone again after all these years. Her son and family have been assigned to Australia for his job. They had signed up to buy a puppy from the yellow lab litter in town. They ask Libby if she can pick up their puppy and keep him for them until they return to the states. As Libby starts getting attached to Chance, the sons family gets an extended stay in Australia. Libby is relieved that she doesn't have to give up Chance, because he has become a blessing in her life.
Patricia Sands completes the Dragonfly Cove series with Libby adopting the 8th puppy from Leslie’s last litter of golden lab puppies. Libby gets talked into to accepting the puppy for her son-he was sent to Australia with his job for 3 months which falls right in the time they were to pick up the puppy. She reluctantly agrees and adopts Chance. She soon finds out how special Chance is-from learning how to get along her cats, helping a little girl named Rosie get through a traumatic childhood, helps Libby’s husband Don who has dementia and starts the process of becoming an official therapy dog. We also see Leslie has fallen in love with her Italian man, Nico and see them married.
Libby has faced loss in her life. Her son Matthew, and his wife Amy have relocated in Australia for a job, taking her grandchildren far away. On a visit they mention having a puppy reserved from Leslie. When the job is extended a couple of months, Leslie is persuaded to pick up the puppy and begin training him. Chance’s arrival helps fi the void left when Libby has had to put her husband Don in a memory facility. Grief, loss, joy, and laughter run throughout this book
When Chance turns up missing, Libby is frantic. A call from the veterinarian eases Libby’s mind and brings new “Family” to her.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.
Libby’s son, Matthew, and his family were planning to adopt a yellow lab puppy. When Matthew finds himself having to take a temporary job assignment in Australia, he asks his mom, Libby, to pick up the puppy from the breeder and care for the him until they return. Libby is not a dog person but will do anything for her family. Unexpected challenges and events occur which lead both Libby and the puppy in new directions, meeting new friends, finding joy and happiness and giving it as well. A delightful addition to the series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow - I wish I lived in Dragonfly Cove so that I could be with all of the awesome pups in this enchanting Series.
Patricia Sands has given us the final book in the Series and it was just as heartwarming and touching as all of the other books in this fantastic series. I loved the characters and especially the fur-babies.
I encourage you to get all of them and read them and then re-read them. You will not regret it.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for fair and honest review.
