Literacy is a skill for all time, for all people. It is an integral part of our lives, whether we are students or adult professionals. Giving all educators the breadth of knowledge and practical tools that help students strengthen their literacy skills is the focus of Read, Write, Lead . Drawing on her experience as a mentor teacher, reading specialist, instructional coach, and staff developer, author Regie Routman offers time-tested advice on how to develop a schoolwide learning culture that leads to more effective reading and writing across the curriculum. She explains how every school—including yours—can * Implement instructional practices that lead to better engagement and achievement in reading and writing for all students, from kindergarten through high school, including second-language and struggling learners.
* Build Professional Literacy Communities of educators working together to create sustainable school change through professional learning based on shared beliefs.
* Reduce the need for intervention through daily practices that ensure success, even for our most vulnerable learners.
* Embed the language of productive feedback in responsive instruction, conferences, and observations in order to accelerate learning for students, teachers, and leaders. In their own voices, teachers, principals, literacy specialists, and students offer real-life examples of changes that led to dramatic improvement in literacy skills and—perhaps just as important—increased joy in teaching and learning. Scattered throughout the book are "Quick Wins"—ideas and actions that can yield positive, affirming results while tackling the tough work of long-term change.
Very good text to use with course on literacy leadership. I appreciate that it does not gear toward elementary school, which many texts like this tend to do since reading and literacy coaches are more often found in younger grades. It is critical teachers who work with pre-adolescents and adolescents are also given the skills to be effective literacy coaches and specialists.
Must Read for all educators and principals. This is your guidebook for starting and continuing whole school and district literacy change. Every page in the book contains usable information on how to effect change in your school as well as quick wins that can be done quickly to get the change started immediately.
There is so much best practice packed into this book! A few reminders/take-always: * The Optimal Learning Model * Whole-part-whole teaching * The importance of teaching writing well and how to model writing for students.
I kept waiting for some specific detail about how to implement some of the obvious suggestions the author was making, but it never came. And despite all the references, this just didn’t seem like it did anything with the research.
I was able to see and meet Regie a long, long time ago...and what a powerful impression she made on that young teacher! Her voice comes through clearly in this book that is not just for leaders and principals- but any who want to improve/build upon/be updated on practices for teaching literacy in today's classrooms. As usual, the appendices and resource list at the end should not be missed. There are no short cuts provided, only lots of examples backed with current research to help teachers reach their students while working effectively and efficiently.
Read, Write, Lead is a book "about hope, learning energy & possibilities." A must read. #educoach

It took me quite a while to finish, but only because I wanted to truly digest it all. A great book for teachers and a must read for teacher leaders and principals to be literacy leaders in their buildings.
Routman does her usual stellar job of describing her unique approach to improving schools. Literacy Communities and residency programs are the heartbeat of her approach.
