Smuggler's Hideaway #3

While We Waited

Rate this book
He’s the grumpy former football player who hates my guts… so why am I carrying his baby?

I’m the sales manager for Five Fathoms Brewing, the brewery I started with my four best friends.

With a wink and a smile, I can get anyone to try our beer. Almost anyone, that is. Hudson, the local resort owner, refuses to do a deal with me.

I’m not taking no for an answer. Especially not from the King of Grumps who thinks our local beer isn’t good enough for his fancy schmancy resort. I’ll make him listen to me no matter what.

The last thing I expect is to get locked in a chalet at the resort with him. I also didn’t expect him to fulfill every fantasy I’ve ever had about the former NFL football player who is the very definition of tall, dark, and handsome. But he does. All. Night. Long.

When morning arrives, I flee as fast as I can with a plan to forget all about my night with Mr. Grouchypants.

But I can’t. Since I’m now carrying his baby .

This grumpy/sunshine, surprise pregnancy, small town romantic comedy features a sunshiny woman who is excited to start a family even if the family includes grumpystiltskin, a grumpy man who thinks his life ended when he stopped playing football, a seal that doesn’t know it’s not a traffic stop, too many mermaid legends to mention, and a group of girlfriends who are considering a career change from brewery owners to matchmakers.

While We Waited is a standalone novel in the Smuggler’s Hideaway series.

Before It Was Love – Sophia and Flynn’s story
After The Vows – Chloe and Lucas’s story
While We Waited – Nova and Hudson’s story
All Along – Maya and Caleb’s story

This is my favorite of the smuggler's cover series so far. I really enjoyed Hudson and Novas story. Nova is a bit neurotic and that irked me a bit but otherwise it was a good story. I love that we get to keep up with the other characters as well.

Finally! The wait is over! While We Waited is live!

Hudson is a former NFL player. Or, as Nova would say, he's a grumpy resort owner also known as Mr. Grumpy Pants.

Nova is used to being able to get whatever she wants with a smile. But Hudson isn't playing ball. So, she drags herself out to his resort to force him to listen to her. Except she accidentally locks them in a chalet together for the night.

Nova plans to run away and forget all about the steamy night she shared with the grump. But now she's pregnant. Oops!

"While s We Waited: a grumpy/sunshine, surprise pregnancy, small-town rom-com (Smuggler's Hideaway Book 3)" by D. E. Haggerty tells the story of a romance between a former NFL player and current owner of Hideaway Haven Resort Hudson Clark and Nova who co-owns 5 Fathoms Brewery with her best friends. Unbeknownst to the other, Nova and Hudson have unrequited feelings for each other. For years, Hudson has felt like he was “less than” from being a successful person because of a hurt knee that took away his NFL career, so he never gave in to his attraction for Nova. On the other hand, Nova’s insecurities are constantly at the forefront due to the bullying she suffered as a teen, and she doesn’t think a “hottie” like Hudson could be attracted to her. Nova shows up with snacks and samples of some of the brewery’s best and newest flavor samples for Hudson to taste instead of just saying “no” to carrying their brews. Finding Hudson in a cottage being renovated, they accidentally get locked in for the night, where they use all the brews that lead to exploration and passion for a night that neither can forget in the following weeks. Then Nova discovers a positive + sign on a pregnancy test, and Hudson hears about it at a wedding reception for Nova’s friend at the Hideaway Resort. Finding out about a possible baby with Nova, who Hudson has always desired, leads to two very independent people learning how to get along. Nova is afraid all of Hudson’s attention is due to the coming birth of their baby, not her. Hudson has to decide if losing out on his NFL career defines his life and where Nova will fit into his life on a scale of importance. H.G. Haggerty creates unique small towns with characters that have to deal with what life throws at them with all their insecurities and baggage, learn how to go on, and each finds happiness.

I am loving this series, I love the zany characters that appear throughout even though this is a completely standalone story.
So, Five Fathoms beer isn't good enough for Mr Grumpypants luxury resort, Nova, spurred on by her four best friends, was going to give it one more try.
Nova, Myers was sales executive for Four Fathoms Brewing, a brewery that she had started with her four friends Chloe, Sophia, Maya and Paisley on the island of Smugglers Hideaway.
Grumpy, almost reclusive, Hudson Clark was the owner of luxury Hideaway Haven Resort, Hudson had been a star player for the NFI until a hard tackle had ended his career devastating the handsome pro.
Nova and Hudson had both had secret crushes on each other in high school, crushes that hadn't disappeared but neither wanted to admit to them.
When Nova decided to have one last push at securing the resorts account the hilarious outcome was to change her life forever.
Thrown together by circumstances, the couple grew closer, Nova was breaking down Hudson's barriers but Nova always felt inferior and couldn't believe that a man like Hudson could fancy someone like her, she had to protect her heart, Hudson thought that he couldn't pursue Nova because his grumpiness would dull her cheerful, sunny personality.
This is a lovely, heartwarming story of opposites attracting, of lack of communication, of hilarious friendships, of welcoming families and a wonderful HEA. I look forward to returning to Smugglers Hideaway for Maya's story.

Back in Smuggler's Hideaway where cheerful Nova pits her wits against moody Hudson.

Nova is the sales executive for Five Fathoms Brewing. She's been told she can sell fish to a mermaid, but as yet hasn't managed to sell beer to Hudson. He's also her high school crush.

"He couldn't be a bit ugly? Nope. Not Hudson. Deep, dark brown eyes I could drown in. A square jaw I want to explore with my fingers. His face is perfect except for a bump on his nose from where he broke it playing college ball."

Hudson, a former professional football player now owns a high-end resort on Smuggler's Hideaway. He is unhappy that his career was cut short by injury and he avoids Nova as he feels he doesn't deserve her.

"Nova is my personal temptation. With her long brown hair I long to fist in my hand while devouring her luscious lips. And exotic dark eyes I want to watch flare with passion whenever I touch her silky smooth skin. She's practically irresistible."

Both of them have reasons why they're scared of having a relationship despite their mutual attraction. Fortunately circumstances throw them together, which helps them to begin the long, hard slog to happily ever after.

This book takes a fairly serious look at finding out what you want from life and about believing in yourself. But the hilarity of life on the island and the requisite appearance of Sammy the seal keeps the story light and happy.

Nova & Hudson

They were each other's secret high school crush. Now, three years after Hudson's return home to Smugglers' Hideaway, they are STILL each other's secret crush. They had a huge obstacle to overcome, both thinking they were undeserving of another's love and devotion. I love how grumpy Hudson went all cinnamon roll hero and spoiled Nova with attention and devotion, even when Nova was afraid to accept his attention as being for her own self and not just for the baby they accidentally made together. It was heart warming to see when Hudson's family, including his four rowdy younger brothers, totally embraced Nova, giving her what she had been missing for more than a decade: a family. They also embraced Nova's 'found family' equally enthusiastically. I also found it interesting that the author embraced the non-alcoholic beers as a new line, just so pregnant Nova would not feel left out in a community dedicated to smugglers, bootleggers, rumrunners, and all things mermaid.

I received a free advance copy of this story from BookSirens and voluntarily chose to share my review.

Smugglers Hideaway has become another home from home along with the characters. I expected Nova's story to be good but boy Hudson is such a loveable grump. Nova has only her friend group loosing her parents was the hardest part of growing up. But her girls where there every step of the way always helping her, even when she was being over cautious and ok a bit of a hypochondriac. But she still can't get over her crush on Hudson even though he's been back on the island three years and was still avoiding her. Hudson missed his career on the NFL but his injury saw the end of that. Now he owned and runs the resort and stays as far as possible away from Nova. He can't and won't spoil her life and take away her sunshine, but she keeps calling him. Then a one time unexpected night turns both their worlds upside down. Can Nova risk losing anyone from her life. Will an unexpected offer take Hudson away again. Sit back and enjoy this rollercoast story with a more than pinch of spice. I loved this story and I must say a good grumpy guy is always a must. I can't wait for more from this series

I have just got to get on this island!!! These girls need me!! I absolutely love this series of books! I laugh and laugh while reading them. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Hudson is what you would consider a huge grouch with a teddy bear personality he tries hard to hide from Nova. Nova is a take charge, nothing will stand in my way, especially Hudson from getting what she wants, which is for Hudson to sell, at his resort the awesome beer that her and her friends make. Thru a close encounter, mermaid lagoon races, a traffic stopping seal and a surprise pregnancy, you just can't find a better story! My favorite part of this story, was the trip to the pharmacy in the next town over, OMG way too funny!! As the author states these are all stand alone books but do yourself a favor and read them all, I promise you won't be disappointed. Every baby mommy needs a baby daddy just like Hudson!!

Fun grumpy/sunshine romcom with all the feels

While We Waited (Smuggler’s Hideaway Book 3) by D. E. Haggerty is true entertainment in a well done romcom. Hudson and Nova nearly combust at every meeting, probably because Hudson tries so hard to avoid and deny what his heart really wants.
Nova is all business, but her heart want Hudson and their one night comes with consequences. D.E. Haggerty applies her art at crafting romance and comedy as these two characters navigate life with consequences. Hudson is as sweet as he is grumpy and Nova is as loving as she is business smart and savvy.
Overall, Smuggler’s Hideway residents do their part, especially Nova’s and Hudson’s friends. With a little bit of patience and a whole lot of reflection, these two come out the other side firmly settled, ready for their new family and HEA.
I read an ARC of this book and voluntarily share my review.

This book is a slice of heartwarming happiness.

This was the sweetest, cutest read. It’s an adorable love story that just made me happy, all the more so thanks to Hudson’s grumpiness.

I loved the characters, the banter and most of all: those nicknames Nova keeps coming up with to call Hudson. (I will not spoil the pleasure of discovering them for yourself by giving any examples).

Also, those chapter titles were absolutely brilliant!

Nova desires love and a family, but as she lost her partner at a young age, she’s afraid she’ll lose anyone she loves.

Hudson still grieves the loss of his football career and thinks he’s too grumpy for Sunshine Nova.

Luckily they give into temptation once and little Sprog (their surprise baby) forces them to come together, and we get to enjoy their beautiful love story.

I will most definitely be reading the rest of this series.

This book gave me whiplash. The MMC has been talking about how much he doesn’t want to bring down the FMC’s sunshine with his grumpiness. Then— *spoilers*— after being grumpy that she didn’t call him when she went to the hospital, she tells him she doesn’t need him to push her in a wheelchair but he says “but you’re my queen” like WHAT?

Not to mention, the weird nautical/mermaid puns— holy mermaids? Something about krakens? That was more cringy and annoying than anything else, and served no purpose in the writing.

This book heels so disjointed. He hears the news of her pregnancy and says “were you f**king other guys while we were together?!” But they were never together…it was one night. The drama in this book is so cheesy and fake, and it’s honestly not needed to further a storyline.

This book missed the mark for me and I’m just not interested in finishing it beyond this point. I’ve read enough.

Received as an ARC and leaving my honest review voluntarily. Standalone in the series so you can read it on its own but because the characters appear throughout the series, it's better and more fun if you read from book 1. This was an easy to read grump/sunshine 'enemies' to lovers story that was funny, heartfelt, emotional and steamy. Hudson is just too swoony and sweet with the way he cares for and spoils Nova. They both have their fears to overcome but together they help each other heal. Having all the best friends up to their antics and shenanigans and sass had me in stitches. Beyond just the romance, the underlying message of family, friendship bonds, overcoming grief and believing in love comes through really strongly. The next story appears to be Maya and Caleb's friends to lovers story and I can't wait to read it!

The Smuggler’s Cove books are romantic and fun. It was a joy to return to quirky, small Smuggler’s Cove. This quick read is full of very entertaining banter. Hudson (the hot, ex-football star who now owns the local resort) and the local brewery’s co-owner and marketing manager have a hookup that leads to an unexpected pregnancy. Nova is convinced that grumpy Hudson actually dislikes her, while Hudson believes he isn’t good enough for upbeat Nova. Hudson and Nova slowly work through their misunderstandings during her pregnancy. Nova's group of close friends and the residents of Smuggler's Cove are always ready to act as matchmakers! This story can be read as a standalone, but it’s enhanced by having met the wonderful characters in Smuggler's Cove in earlier books of the series. Recommended! How do such dumb women own their own business? The men are wishy washy but the women are straight up dumb. A man doesn't have sex with and take of a woman he can't stand. Geezus

"He doesn't want me, he wants the baby I'm carrying"
I'm halfway through and if I read that phrase one more time I'm done. Nova is by far the dumbest FMC in this series and quite possibly any book I've ever read. So far it's been the men and their wishy washy inner monologs that have driven me nuts but dayum if Nova hasn't surpassed them for most annoying character EVA!!!!!!!!!!

"He’ll die. Everyone I love dies. It’s my curse to bear."
Except her FOUR best friends and their families. Plus the fact she wanted a husband and lots of kids. Suddenly she's afraid everyone she loves is doomed to die lol SEE!!!!!!! Dumb

I love Smuggler’s Hideaway and the various characters – including Sammy. Hudson is perfect for Nova and they are a good balance for each other. I enjoyed their romance and the path it took to get to their HEA. Hudson and Nova are interesting, relatable, intriguing, wounded, complex, complicated, entertaining characters. They are fun to spend time with. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. I love that we get to see so much of the couples from the other books in the series. You could read this as a stand alone, but for better enjoyment, read the books in order.

Grumpy / Sunshine with Accidental Pregnancy, Close Proximity in Quirky Fun Small Town

This book is another winner in the Smuggler's Hideaway series, and although it easily works as a standalone all of the books are wonderful. I loved both Nova and Hudson and how perfect they balanced each other and understood each other's quirks and idiosyncrasies. Their "sexy" banter was often hysterical as were the girls text conversations. I also enjoyed the small town's festivals and events as well as the way they all came together to make a "found family" for Nova when she lost her parents. This is the third book in the series and it hints at the next one - which I can't wait for! Enjoy!

I am loving the island life!! While We Waited was the third book in Dena’s Smuggler’s Hideaway series. It was full of grumpiness, witty banter, and all the swoon!

Nova was in charge of sales for the brewery she co-owned with her best friends. She had been trying to get Hudson to stock their beer on his resort for what felt like forever! She decided it was time to take matters into her own hands but after getting locked in one of his new chalets overnight, she may have gotten more than she bargained for!

Oh Hudson, you knew what you wanted!! Sneaky snake! Loved these two together, I am glad they finally figured everything out! I think they have been my favorite couple so far! Hudson was truly dreamy and just wanted to take the best care of Nova. He was fun to watch because under all the grump was a heart of gold. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

I really loved Nova and Hudson. Both had some heavy baggage that had changed their lives. Both of Nova’s parents died before she graduated from high school but she adopts a sunshine point of view in memory of her mother. Hudson suffered a career-ending injury and, while he moved on to being a successful resort owner, his whole demeanor was dark because he kept focusing on the loss of his professional athletic future. They both were very attracted to each other, but had to fight their fears to be together. But once they got together, I loved how Hudson took care of Nova, trying so hard to support her and fulfill her needs. Lots of heat, some tears, great read!

This is Nova Myers and Hudson Clark's story.

She likes Hudson, always has, but he hates her for some unknown reason she just can't fathom.

Hudson is grumpy with everyone, especially Nova. Not because he hates her, the exact opposite is true, but he assumes he's no good for her.

A sales meeting leads to consequences neither saw coming and thrust them into unknown territory they are unsure how to navigate.
However, they give it a good, with sometimes hilarious and grumpy conversations.

This book has laugh aloud moments, especially those that deal with Nova's friends. This particular one introduces Hudson's family and his brothers are hysterical!

Another good one from D.E. Haggerty!

I absolutely loved Hudson and Nova's wonderful story...
Nova is the third of the Five Fathoms Brewing girls to find her soul mate!
Former NFL football player Hudson has avoided his sunshine (Nova) for 3 years since being back in Smuggler's Hideaway, as he didn't want his grumpy ass to dim her shining light!!
But an unexpected little surprise after a one night stand leaves this couple something else to think about!
Brilliant storyline, loved the characters, and had a great HEA.
I'm looking forward to Maya and Caleb's story next.

I received a digital ARC of this book. This is book 3 in the series and could technically be read as a stand alone, but the leads are in the previous books and there would be spoilers for the first 2 books in this one. So, read them in order if you can! Nova has had a crush on Hudson since high school, and he has had a crush on her as well, but he’s hidden his feelings, so no one knows. He’s as grumpy as possible to keep her at arm’s length. When Norah accidentally gets them locked in a cabin, will they be able to resist each other? I read this book in one sitting. I’ve loved this series, and I’m looking forward to book 4!

I loved this book. Nova has a huge crush on Hudson but he is a total grump. She thinks that he hates her and she pretends to hate him until one day they are stuck together in his chalet. They spend one scorching night together which leads to a life long surprise. Now Hudson and Nova have to travel on the journey to being parents. Along the way, they realize that they don’t hate each other. They are actually perfect together but they have to get over their hang ups.

This book was super cute and funny. I loved all of the shenanigans that Nova and her friends got into. I also loved their friendship and the extended circle. Great book.

Feel Good Story.
This was an entertaining read set in a small town/tourist community with close group of residents that grew up together. Their love to embrace life and support each other while being true to themselves was a pleasure to see. The two very opposing personalities of Hudson and Nova was OK to start with for me, but the push and pull between them became tiresome at the end. With such an over the top positive perspective on things with nothing going wrong, it felt a bit unrealistic to me. Perhaps the author chose this approach to ensure a feel good ending to the story.

Hudson and Nova are my favourite in this series so far.
He's the grumpy ex NFL who owns the resort and she is part owner of the local brewery in Smugglers Hideaway.
All my favourite people are back and reading this is like putting on your favourite sweater when fall begins.
I absolutely love this author's writing style and how her characters are flawed but beautiful with souls.
Hudson is too cute for words as he fusses over Nova.
It's a slow burn romance with heartfelt vibes, adorable banter and just the right blend of spice.
If you like Elsie Silver you are going to fall in love with this author's books.

Nora & Hudson
Nora has been crushing Hudson since High School, but the kicker here is that Hudson also has been interested in Nora as well. This relationship has a bit of a rocky start, they were both on the same page but did not know it. Once they started communicating well with each other, the relationship was crazy fun and Amazing! Steamy times, a baby and true love! I Loved It!!! No Spoilers!

"I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."

The story of Nova and Hudson. It wasn't my favourite of all the books however it fit perfectly within the series. Nova's over worrying tendencies was a focus point throughout the story but then it suddenly stopped and although their was an explanation it wasn't delved into further which I would have loved.
Overall it was a great story and I'm looking forward to reading more in the Smugglers series.

"Thank you for giving me the world. I love you, Nova."

Nova crushed on Hudson when she was growing up. Grumpy Hudson is back in their home town running a luxury resort following his retirement from football due to injury. When Nova visits Hudson at his resort to persuade him to stock the beer from her business that she runs with her friends, the chemistry between them ignites and they spend a hot night together. However, Nova's insecurity when she finds she is pregnant makes life hard for Hudson as he tries to convince her that they can create a future together.

Such a sweet read. Nova and Hudson clash in classic grumpy/sunshine style, not knowing they're both fighting an attraction, until the one fatal night when Hudson fights it no more and Nova ends up with more than she bargained with!

What follows is determination from Hudson and grudging (to begin with) trust from Nova.

I loved the word play in this book, there are some real light hearted moments and puns.

It's not all plain sailing though, but with love and support from friends they find their happy ever after.

A real feel good read.

What a great way to continue this storyline! If you have already fallen in love with Smuggler's Hideaway, and the five women who run the town's distillery - and have been waiting to find out how Nova finds her HEA - then your wait is over! If you haven't read this series yet, what are you waiting for? Grab this one right now, and dive in.

Hudson and Nova have been in and out of each others' lives since High School, with a simmering attraction that neither acted on, for several reasons.
When Grumpy Hudson continues to refuse to serve Five Fathoms at his posh resort, Sunshiney Nova sets off to convince him of his error. Only, she gets more than she bargained for, and now has a chance to have everything she's dreamed of...
The banter between these characters flows nicely, and makes you feel like you are in the room with them, and I loved that aspect of this book.
This island town has great characters, small town vibes and energy, with Mermaids, Pirates, traditions and a seal who cannot seem to stay off the road! (IYK,YK)

I love this author's creativity and the way her stories grab, and keep, my attention. My recommendation is to read in order, but each story in this series can be stand-alone, if you choose. I absolutely can not wait for the next one, to see how Caleb and Maya get their HEA.
One-click this one, you'll be happy you did.
I was fortunate to receive a complimentary copy of this one (thank you) and happily leave my review.
