This book is just what I wanted. I didn't know it was what I wanted until the last page.
The world of thrillers and horror is no mystery to me, I've never read one with such a dark romance twist to it though. My mind is very confused as to whether I love this or not 🤔
I'm going to go with yes. 🤔
Having read other works by Gracie, I can attest for her ability to suck readers in for an emotional journey. I don't think I could live without her writing now. I've been corrupted, I went from fantasy/sci-fi, and horror to having a little thing for dark and spicy romance.
Whiteout, although a novella, packs a serious punch in its brief page count. I read it in one sitting and I can confirm it's a psychological pearl clutcher with a deeply burning desire to test what a readers comfort zone was/is. Full of trigger warnings that readers will love, a darkly satisfying presence, steeped in folklore, piles of intriguing mystery, plus all the smut you can ask for, it delivers far more than a brief read.
👀 I am going to check my cupboards for proverbial boogeymen now.
Whiteout has left me in utter confusion, yet deeply satisfied at the build up and then finishing on a note that makes me beg for more.
Some of the trigger warnings in this story, I just completely glossed over, who reads them anyway?
What I would have liked a warning for: Christmassy kink that makes my eyes pop out and my jaw drop, ensuring that I will never eat a candy cane again. Ever.
I enjoyed the world building here a lot, snowy mountain cabin, which is rumoured to be a mystery spot for ‘the huntsman’. A disturbing being doling out tricks and treats to those who deserve it. We get a look into the surrounding kitschy town, with a severe avoidance of truth being told.
The story boils down to a fine truth, a severe mental incapacity to separate oneself from their inner demons, it can only end up bad for you.
Side note: Mental health is a finicky thing, and I thought it was captured exceptionally well, it felt like something I, being mentally ill myself, could have only imagined in my darkest times. Usually in intrusive thoughts like a horribly awake creepy slideshow you can't exit.
The multi POV, was very interesting, normally short stories are told in one point, with more time needed to process multiple characters. Whiteout somehow managed to introduce us to characters, and then see the intense in depth motivations of the man behind the mask. I do love a reveal scene. The build up to the twists that arise were juicy. I didn't feel cheated by the character swapping as I've done many times before, the plot gave just enough of a story and mindset for each of them to balance the chapters completely.
Overall, this book is a thrilling read intended for mature audiences.
Darkly satisfying plot with a huge dollop of smut.❤️🔥
