When a child feels left out, makes a mistake, or is called a name that hurts their heart, how can they know their true identity? Bestselling author, spoken-word artist, and thought leader on identity Hosanna Wong reveals that you aren’t defined by what you’ve done or what others think—you’re defined by what God says about you.
Hosanna’s powerful message uncovers an important truth for kids no one has the power to define you but the One who created you. And God says you are His friend. You are a work of art. You are His child. And you are greatly loved.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
What God Says About You is a beautiful, rhyming picture book for children to boost self-esteem, self-worth, self-love and confidence for young children. This would be a perfect book for classroom story time and discussion, as a bedtime story or to read with/to your child during times that are hard for them (e.g. if being bullied). There's much to take away from this book and I feel its one of those books that lifts your spirit and that you can take something new away from it with you each time you read it. The illustrations are inclusive and diverse and are really sweet to look at throughout the story.
You have a name that teachers call you, but sometimes people call you by a name that hurts. But you are God's friend, you are chosen, God's masterpiece, his temple, his messenger, a child of God, greatly loved, free indeed, and brand new. 'With God as your friend, you are never alone' The illustrations by Liz Brizzi are simple, perfect in bright colors, and joyful. Well suited for reading WITH someone any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school, waiting room, or your local public library. I loved reading this book with my son. If your child ever feels down or is hard on themselves, this book will encourage them & remind them that they are God's beautiful masterpiece.
Thank you to @tommynelsonbooks for sending me a copy of the book.
I loved the message in this book. It is rooted in scripture and has great reminders about who we are in God’s eyes. I feel like finding strong biblical books for the elementary age can be a challenge but this book fills in that gap a little more. Can’t wait to purchase it for my family!
Hardcover I feel that every child should have access to this book, preferably in their home library so they can read it over and over again until they know every word by heart. Hosanna has written a fabulous book telling every reader who they are in God’s sight, and, very importantly, all are backed by Bible verses.
I’m delighted to have a hard copy as it is colorful and beautifully illustrated, with lots of details that children can look at and talk about with a grown-up.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Scripture Connection See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
1 John 3:1
Spiritual Themes What God Says About You is a powerfully-anchoring book for believers* of all ages, inviting participants to ground our identities in what God says about us. Written for believers, the book includes descriptors like “God’s Masterpiece,” “Brand New” and “God’s Friend.”
The last page of the book includes the list of names, along with the Bible verses that originated these titles.
*Descriptors like “God’s temple” are very clearly for believers; this distinction is not expressly made on the page about being God’s messenger and sharing His names for us with others.
Favorite Quote Nothing you do could make God love you more,
And nothing could make Him love you less.
Hosanna Wong
Narrative Wong does an excellent job of showcasing and contextualizing the names that God has given to His children, offering tangible examples of how these names illustrate our identity in Christ. I love how the narrative highlights circumstances where these names will prove most meaningful.
Towards the beginning, Wong notes that, “Others may call you a thing that you’re not / so it’s important to know what is right!” and adds that God, as our Creator, is the One who gets to name us. “So everything God says about you / is final and true — you can’t change it!”
As the narrative progresses, the author cites specific examples of when these names may prove especially meaningful.
For example, when we know we’ve messed up: “Once [we] admit it and tell God [we’re] sorry, He forgives [us] and helps [us] move on,” because we’re “not defined by what we did wrong. Free, indeed is [our] new name.” Likewise, even if we feel chosen “the wrong path” and want a “redo,” we can recognize the beautiful truth that “God loves to give [us] a fresh start,” and He has called us “brand new!”
Likewise, we can recognize His craftsmanship in our physical, and spiritual, iterations. We are “God’s masterpiece” and, as God’s temple, we have the opportunity to honor God and ourselves when we “take good care of” our bodies and practice kindness toward ourselves.”
Illustrations Brizzi’s artwork is truly delightful, and I like how she draws out the figurative narration in her illustrations. The page that describes us as God’s friends, for instance, mentions that, “He’ll be with [us] for the whole ride.” Brizzi sets this promise against the backdrop of a subway station. We see a smiling boy waving out the window, a girl offering a hotdog to her disembarking friend, and several other children waiting or sorting out their destinations.
The page about being God’s masterpiece is also full of examples of human artistry. There’s delightful chalk art, including a vibrant pair of wings drawn on a brick wall, and one of the characters is shooting Polaroid photos of his friends. Similarly, the section about God making us “brand new” showcases another element of newness: gorgeous blooming flowers, as well as fruits and vegetables. These illustrations certainly capture the sense of newness that Jesus offers to us in our walk with Him.
Illustrations also portray a diverse array of characters with differing skin and hair tones, as well as differing abilities.
My favorite illustration accompanies the text about knowing what God has to say about us. This is an incredibly cozy spread featuring a fort complete with lantern, armchair, piles and piles of books — and a dog!
Recommendation Status A meaningful selection for believers of all ages, What God Says About You presents readers with grounding, Scriptural truths about identity in Jesus. This is a refreshing book that emphasizes God’s closeness and faithfulness, regardless of our actions.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.
Hosanna Wong is a spoken word artist whose poem, “I Have a New Name” went viral on social media in 2023. Her first children’s book, What God Says About You, adapts the ideas of that poem for young readers. The result is a picture book that works as a fantastic read aloud for families with children of all ages; it is the kind of book I plan to read aloud to my youngest while trusting that the older kids are listening in and hearing the message.
The book begins with a warm sentiment, inviting children into the adventure of life with Jesus. “Your life will be a great adventure./ Just imagine the things you will see!/ What fun you’ll have as you discover/ the person God made you to be.” I love and appreciate this entry point for children into a life of discipleship, framing it not as a religious experience or moral choice but as an adventure with a God who is like an intimate companion.
From there, Wong goes on to explore the many competing messages children might hear about their identity, abilities, appearance, and worth, then counters those ideas with truths from scripture. The poem says children are God’s friends, masterpieces, and temples; that they are chosen, greatly loved, and free. Meanwhile, the bright and colorful illustrations depict children who are diverse, playful, and active participants in their worlds. The final pages of the book serve as an appendix of sorts and depict an illustrated bulletin board, onto which are “pinned” the Bible verses that correspond to each “name” covered in the preceding text.
I have one quibble with the book, which is a line early on that reads, “Who gets to name a thing, anyway? Why, of course, the creator who made it!” I’m not sure this squares with the Genesis creation account in which God gives humans the authority to name much of the created world. Preschoolers and other young readers might have difficulty interpreting the more figurative nature of the “names” Wong is referring to; as they are more descriptors of God’s children, something we are “called” rather than something we are named. Perhaps I am mincing words here, but as I read the book I kept imagining the ways my own children (who are inquisitive and also often very literal) would question some of this language. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful picture book, and one that is a great addition to your family bookshelf, perfectly in keeping with other titles like The Book of Belonging and Matthew Paul Turner’s collection of picture books.
This book is a must have for all children these days. We’re all look for validation, approval, acceptance… sometimes the message we get is approval and sometimes it’s rejection. Our kids are growing up in a world full of so many outside voices from social media, school, and bullies telling them who they are. Kids and adults are all wondering, am I good enough, attractive enough, smart, athletic, liked, cool, do I fit in?
This book can shifts our thinking away from looking for approval from the world for less important aspects of ourselves to the more important value we hold. 👏
The message is that GOD’s VOICE and opinion of who we are IS the ULTIMATE VOICE we should be listening to, not all the other voices. God made us, so He gets to name us, not the bully at school or on social media.
God says we are: His Friend, Chosen, God’s Masterpiece, Greatly Loved, Wanted, a Child of God.
Our kids need to know they are truly LOVED and created perfectly, handmade for a purpose, by God. The outside voices they’ve been hearing are not who they are.
Whether you’re a Christian or not, this book will speak deeply into the soul of any child who needs to know they are loved and wanted. At the end of reading it my kids both picked out a name that stuck out to them. 😊
This children’s book is based on the author, Hosanna’s, beautiful spoken word piece 🩷🩷“I Have a New Name.” 🩷🩷 It’s so powerful it will bring you to tears, it’s on YouTube 🎬 and you 100% need to stop what you’re doing and go listen to it, and then you’ll see why you need to buy this book.
Thank you Hosanna, for reminding our kids (and us) who we are!!!
This nonfiction picture book teaches kids about putting their identity in what God says about them. The author emphasizes that even though people might mean or discouraging things about us, the person who gets to name something is the creator who made it. She teaches kids about different things that God says about us, like us being masterpieces, God's friends, and beloved children.
The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the text expresses ideas in a simple, kid-friendly way. I like that this book doesn't lean into metaphors or flowery writing, but teaches important truths in a straightforward way. Also, the author shares Bible verses at the end of the book, showing her sources for what God says about us. These Bible verses also share specific messages about Jesus.
This book will appeal to Christian families, and it's also a great read-aloud for Sunday school or Christian classroom contexts. This book is a great way to teach kids about how God sees them, building their self-esteem based on God's love instead of how others see them, or how they see themselves. This will also be especially meaningful for kids who have experienced harsh words and bullying in their relationships with other people.
I received a temporary digital copy from NetGalley, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Do you sometimes wonder who you are? Or what you were made to do in this world? What God Says About You by Hosanna Wong is an uplifting and encouraging book aimed at children ages four to eight.
What God Says About You is a large picture book with a dust jacket measuring about 8 by 10 inches in size. It is 32 pages long. Even though it is aimed at children ages four to eight. I would lean towards this book being more interesting to the older end of that spectrum but it depends on the child, of course.
What God Says About You is rhyming verse. It is kind of long and uses some larger vocabulary words, which is why I suggest it for children on the older end of that spectrum. I think the illustrations are gorgeous. They are fairly inclusive and I like that too. At the end of the book there is a 2-page spread summarizing all the good things God says about us and that spread is especially good. This book could make a nice gift for someone to encourage them or even as a good gift for a special religious mile-marker date or holiday.
I received a copy of this book from Tommy Nelson publishers. All opinions are my own.
What a beautiful book... both the words and the illustrations! This is a message our children need to hear and have repeated throughout the different stages of life. The world will try to give you labels and make you feel inferior. Our children need to know the truth of what God says about them.
This book is one way to give positive messages to your children about their value and worth. I like that each page has a different name given to God's children.
We all forget truth at times, and this is a great reminder for all of us, not just children, of our value and worth in the eyes of our Creator.
This is a powerful line of the book to me: "But no one has the power to give you your true name except for God, who created you." This is a wonderful book to add to your personal library and read periodically. It would make a great one to read at bedtime for your child to have truth in their minds as they are going to sleep.
(I love the cover too and how the words look like they are made with stars.)
I received a copy of this from the publisher and was under no obligation to provide a positive review.
"God calls all His children these names! Echo His words and do the same! Tell others what God calls them too! Today, what name sticks out to YOU!"
It's such a joy to give a 5-star review to this beautiful new picture book titled "What God Says About You" by Hosanna Wong and Liz Brizzi. This book is a comforting reminder of our true identity in God. The compelling question, "Who am I?" appears on numerous pages, and it's answered with the many facets of who God says we are, including: chosen, God's friend, child of God, brand-new, God's masterpiece, free, God's temple, and my favorite, greatly loved!
With concrete examples and detailed pictures of children experiencing the fullness of life, each page is brimming with exquisite illustrations that complement the carefully crafted wording. Purposeful, playful, and powerful! This book would make a fantastic addition to a home library. Help your children celebrate faith and the promise of God's love with this delight!
Thank you, Tommy Nelson Books, for sharing this copy with me! Opinions expressed are my own.
What God Says About You is a truly lovely book that helps children understand their identity through the eyes of their Creator—beautifully and wonderfully made by Him. In a world that often sends confusing or damaging messages about who we are, this book offers gentle truth and healing, reminding children how deeply valued they are.
Written in clear, child-friendly language, the message is easy to grasp and perfect for sparking meaningful conversations. Each page encourages young readers to see themselves the way God sees them—loved, chosen, and purposefully created.
A wonderful resource for families, classrooms, church groups, or any child who needs to be reminded of their worth. This book helps mend hurtful messaging and nurtures confidence rooted in God’s truth.

This book is based on Hossana Wong's viral poem, I Have A New Name, simplified for a young child to understand, it speaks to the importance of temembering that is God who gives us our names, not those in the world!
This is a beautifully written and illustrated Children's Book, one that I recommend for children, but also for parents and anyone who works with children.
I give What God Says About You, five out of five stars!

Hosanna Wong’s What God Says About You book features nine names that God calls us throughout Scripture. At the end of the book, she includes the scripture references that support those names. Woven into the beautiful illustrations are the names that God calls us. These visuals provide a fun element to go back through the book with your child and find the names after reading through a few times, e.g., look in the sand, the fireworks, banners, and posters. A variety of ethnic groups are represented along with a myriad of children with special needs (physical disabilities). A great rhyming book targeted at ages three through ten, this treasure has a message everyone can be reminded of regardless of age!
I love this new lyrical picture book by Chinese American author Hosanna Wong. The beautiful rhyming verses will encourage young readers to remember how valuable and precious they are to God and to celebrate the unique way God created each of us. I love the illustrations of diverse children and especially the one of kids eating noodles in San Francisco's Chinatown.
I have enjoyed listening to Hosanna Wong share her inspiring spoken word poem "I Have a New Name," so I am glad she has written her message for kids in this children's book. A great read aloud to enjoy with your family again and again!

If I could read a story to every child, this would be it! What God Says About You is written for children to hear and learn about God’s love for them. Every page is filled with an affirmation and explanation of how each person is created, called, and chosen by God to be exactly who they are, God’s workmanship! The last pages are filled with verses that tell of God’s love for each of us. This book also encourages the reader to share these affirmations, attitudes, and verses with others. I will be buying this book for gifts! #Sponsored I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
A cute rhyming book that shares God's truths. God is the one who created us and everything He says about us is true. We are his creation and He lives inside of us. This book is beautifully illustrated. This book would be great addition to a family library to teach kids about how they are God's creation.

I received this book through GoodReads First Read program.
This is a great book to read to a little kid. It tells them that what they hear in this world about themselves is not accurate. What God says about them is what matters. Each of us are God's Friend, God's Masterpiece, Chosen, God's Temple, God's Messenger, Greatly Loved, a Child of God, Free Indeed, and Brand New. These are things we all should know.
I don't have grandchildren yet, but if I did, I would read this book to my grandchild as much as possible so they hear about God and what He says about them.
A powerful blessing between the covers of this book.
Empowering to know the promises God has for you and to hear the names and words God speaks over you.
This book brings a message of strength, has joyful illustrations and combines words beautifully in a poetic rhythm.
At the end of the book are Bible texts. This book is a wonderful gift for children, I bet they will flip through this beautiful reminders over and over again.

I bought this for my grandchildren. The illustrations are beautiful, and I love the message of the book. In today's world with so many negative influences, we all need to know what God says about us, but especially our little ones.
What a delightful book. I won this in Goodreads giveaway. I will be passing this on to my grandchildren. They will enjoy this, and it will reaffirm what we have been teaching them. The illustrations are wonderful, too.
A helpful little look at who God says you are in way that pivots a child’s perspective. A good reminder when you need it. Simple and straightforward text.
Thank you Hosanna for a book for our children. Hearing your words as an “adult” is life changing. Imagine a young generation growing up with this message. Cant start too young!
