Bees in June

Rate this book
Set against the optimism and excitement of the first moon landing in the summer of 1969, a feat many said was impossible, one woman struggles to achieve something she thinks is impossible--living a happy and fulfilling life.

Rennie King's world isn't at all what she expected when she married the hotshot baseball player from her small town of Spark, Tennessee. Reeling from the loss of her newborn son, she desperately needs the support of her husband, but instead of providing comfort, he is becoming increasingly angry, often turning that anger on her.

When a glowing bee lands beside her, Rennie senses she needs to check on her beloved beekeeper uncle. The bee stirs long-forgotten memories of a childhood lived close to nature, a connection she lost over time. As the summer progresses, she finds both the bees and her uncle advising and encouraging her. While healing from her loss, she gains the courage to break free from the husband who is becoming increasingly violent.

With help from her family, her friends, and of course, the bees, Rennie dares to hope that she can build a happy life for herself and opens a business that could provide a path to independence. But starting over is hard, and as the heat rises that summer, so do tempers, until everything comes to a head the night the astronauts first step onto the moon's surface.

Hope-filled and infused with magical realism, Bees in June captures Rennie's journey back to her true self, creating a rewarding life that the bees showed her was possible if she only believed in herself and the magic that surrounds her.

🚨🚨 Special Alert 1000th NetGalley Review 🚨🚨

When I requested this book from NetGalley, I had no idea how much I was going to love it. The book takes place in 1969 in a small town called Spark, Tennessee. It is about Rennie Hendricks and her grief after losing her baby boy. To add to that grief, she is married to a very abusive man. Because of mounting debt, she takes a job at a diner, which gives her purpose, and she starts to feel good about herself again. She has an uncle who owns some hives that she likes to help out with, and this is where the magic begins. The bees seem to glow and guide her. She starts to think this magic is real, as her aunt was the previous caretaker of the hives and was once thought to be a witch. As Rennie spends time healing and forming friendships, she starts to come into her own again.

This was the perfect end-of-summer read for me. It is everything I want in a book. It's unforgettable and filled with warmth. I loved the humour and was sucked into the story right from the start. I loved the quirky characters and the touch of magic. It's filled with strength and heart. I was charmed by Rennie and her aunt. The descriptive writing was just perfect without being too wordy.

Overall, Bees in June was the perfect read about love, loss, and starting over. We can sometimes surprise ourselves with our inner strength when we think we have none. This book left me feeling hopeful, and the characters felt like friends. I was privileged to bee 🐝 on this journey with them. I highly recommend this book, wholeheartedly. All. The. Stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

This book is both lighthearted and extremely emotional! It is not like any other book that I have ever read! This book has all the small town vibes, family stories, magic realism, love, happiness and sadness. It’s all about having a second chance at life and never giving up hope!

This book was written in 3rd person and did have a few year jumps into the past in it. I absolutely loved the female main character of the story, Rennie. She was so fragile at the beginning of this book and came out a strong and powerful woman! Her Husband Tiny treated her horrible and was the most disliked character in the book. I also loved Rennie’s Uncle named Dixon in this story, he is full of positive energy, inspirational, and full of family stories! I could just sit back and read Dixon’s stories forever!

I enjoyed the other characters in this story as well, besides Tiny. I even enjoyed all the bees in the story! This book gave us some knowledge on bees as well, which I really loved! Bees are special and crucial for our environment! This book does discuss religion in it as well. Be sure to read this book’s content warnings. Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 magical bees!

Thank you to NetGalley, author Elizabeth Bass Parman and Harper Muse publishing for this digital reader’s advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is expected to be published on September 2, 2025!

I really wanted to like this one butttt its just not for me. Set during the summer of the moon landing, infused with magical realism, and tied together with the symbolism of bees, it did sound like it would be good. Unfortunately, I ended up putting it down because of just how heavy the content was for me. I think I assumed this was Christian Fiction since it was on Baker Book House's website, but it's not. That's my fault for not doing proper research. The language pulled me out of the story right off. Harper Muse isn't always clean language or content wise. I know right off when a book just won't be for me and would rather DNF than push through.

While the story itself seems to hold a lot of hope and healing for readers who can handle the themes, I personally found it too heavy right now for me. The book deals openly with grief from infant loss, domestic violence shown on page, spouse cursing at her despite the grief, and trauma, and while that may make for an authentic journey for Rennie, it just wasn’t a good fit for me. The cursing from her abusive husband and those situations just were too hard for me to get through.

That being said, I know this book will resonate deeply with other readers who are looking for a story of second chances, and some magical realism woven into historical fiction. If don’t mind content that gets dark and raw, this may be one worth picking up but for me it wasn't one I wanted to spend a lot of time on. Thanks to the publisher for a copy to read and review.

Going to be a favorite of 2025.

From the minute, you meet Sara, you will want to be with her and share her heartaches as well as her joys.

Sarah married her high school sweetheart,Tiny, but it wasn’t a sweet marriage. He totally changed.

He always grumbled about the money that she spent so she decided to get a job.

The job was great because she could get out of the house and bring home food for herself, her husband, and her Uncle Dixon. She also could put away some money for a rainy day.

Uncle Dixon was wonderful, and he taught Sara that bees were magical and could help you be safe and even do some predictions.

I loved the chapters about how the bees talked about what was going on and how they talked about protecting Sara and helping her and others.

BEES IN JUNE is a very hopeful, sweet, pleasurable read. You won’t want the book to end.

Ms. Parman’s beautiful descriptions of everything and especially the flowers that graced Uncle Dixon‘s home added to the beauty and heartwarming theme of this book.

This book takes you to a place that feels like a hug and has characters that are genuine and gentle except for one.

I want to meet Sara, Uncle Dixon, Ambrose, Aunt Eugene, and May Dean.

If you need an uplifting, endearing read, do not miss BEES IN JUNE. 5/5

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of the book. All opinions are my own.

I am very excited to receive the audio ARC of this book. Thank you, HCCP & HCF Audio | Harper Muse; I appreciate it very much. 💕

What to expect:

🐝 Historical Fiction
🐝 Southern
🐝 Small Town
🐝 Magical Realism
🐝 Healing from grief
🐝 Breaking free from abuse
🐝 Self-discovery

Obsessed with this little book. 🥹 This story completely blew me away. It was subtle yet carried a grand, meaningful message. The depth of the storyline was carefully woven into the plot. The words, whimsical yet impactful. Many times throughout the book, I had tears in my eyes. The concept of the bees was also very clever to me. I especially loved the additional POV/narration. I am not sure why some negative reviews mention that part. Perhaps those reviewers are not familiar with magical realism, but in my opinion, it was perfectly executed. I loved the characters and was so moved by their stories. I hope the author/editor doesn't change much on publication day because the ARC, as is, was great. I wouldn't change a thing! This is a slower-paced story, so it may not be for everyone, but I was so easily transported into this little world. I honestly never wanted to leave. I loved watching the FMC find joy again. 💕🐝

I would love to reread this in the future. 5 stars for me. Love, love, love!

This is a very sweet and touching book. I listened to it on audiobook and it was a wonderfully cozy story about family, friends, love, resilience and new beginnings.

In the late 1960’s in the small town of Sparks, Tennessee, a young woman named Rennie is full of self-doubt and stuck in an abusive marriage. Rennie finds love and support from her cousin Nadine, her dear Uncle Dixon and from a hive of bees that belonged to her deceased Aunt Eugenia. These bees aren’t ordinary bees, though. They have a bit of magic to them and are intent on protecting and helping Rennie to find her own strength and her way forward for a better life.

After the loss of her newborn son, Rennie’s marriage gets worse and Rennje finds work cooking for the town diner to make up for her husband’s financial shortcomings. This new opportunity creates a chance for Rennie to use her baking skills to make a better life for herself.

This is just a lovely old fashioned small town story of a woman made small by her terrible husband finding her own strength and footing to take charge of her life. It’s full of sweet family love, strong women stepping up to support and help other women in need, small town charm, new beginnings and second chances at love. It’s all infused with magical realism and some wonderful bees who help to orchestrate Rennie’s journey. And the first moon landing sets the background for it all!

The audiobook was very enjoyable with great narration. I really the small town 1960’s setting. I loved Arden, the owner of the local diner, who gives Rennie so much support, and Rennie’s sweet Uncle Dixon who loves and protects Rennie endlessly. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice old fashioned story!

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Muse for access to an advance copy of this audiobook!

Words cannot describe the depth of feelings evoked by Bees in June, but I’ll try. The love story truly took a back seat to the tremendous character development! The recipes were almost as magical as the bees. An absolute feat of romance, pain, growth, family, and little dab of magic!

Why can’t I give more than 5 stars?
Wow just wow! I loved this story of Rennie and her family! She has love surrounding her with great family and friends as she navigates death of an infant and domestic violence. She is guided by her Aunt’s beloved bees. The bees have a voice in the story! Elizabeth has captured this magic and woven a sweet tale of resilience. You’ll love it too!

Look carefully at the cover! It’s just perfect!

This book is not out until September 2,2025 but Elizabeth’s debut novel, The Empress of Cooke County, is out now so don’t wait to enjoy her writing.

In this moving historical fiction novel set in 1969, Rennie is a young housewife married to a former baseball player. She is full of dreams but after suffering the loss of her baby, she cannot depend on her husband for support. Fortunately, she has her beloved elderly uncle and cousin to lean on. She also has the protection and support of bees. I was so fascinated by the beekeeping facet of this book! I just loved how their habits were blended into Rennie’s sorrows through magical realism. There is so much love and hope in this novel despite some tough issues.

I loved that “Bees in June” was set in the summer of 1969, an era that captured the townsfolk immersive attention as they watched the first moon landing! Hope, innocence and tradition embrace this novel as we take a moment to slow down and breathe in the mystical life of bees and one very sweet and sensible Rennie.

Rennie King lived in a small town, Spark Tennessee and married the high school baseball star headed to stardom. Her life didn’t quite turn out how she thought it might. Rennie’s husband, Tiny, was released from his major league farm baseball team, they lost their first and only baby, Gabriel, upon a pre mature delivery. As Tiny’s frustration grew due the loss of his “identity”, the loss of his child and his struggles with learning to work on a tobacco farm, he became angry and violent.

It’s a novel about grief, growth and bravery! While Rennie relied on her Uncle Dixon and her cousin Mae Dean during her hardships, the bees are truly the ones who helped guide her to safety and ultimately her future.
The novel has excerpts where the bees are talking, magic realism, it’s heartwarming and nostalgic. It’s a journey as Rennie finds a means to take back her life.
After reading “Bees in June” I will have more patience for bees and an understanding for them, not to mention a feeling of peace and remembrance ! This one will stay with me !
Highly recommend this amazing novel!

Oh, my heart. This book broke it and warmed it time and time again. Don’t let the cover of BEES IN JUNE by Elizabeth Bass Parman fool you. Sure, it’s bright and cheerful, but it does contain some heavy and sorrowful subject matter on domestic abuse. Thankfully, the author uses plenty of heart and humor to balance it all out. Check out this synopsis:

You will undoubtedly fall for the female protagonist, Rennie King immediately. She will charm the pants off of you, frustrate you, impress you, and break you. You will root for her from start to finish. If you love reading stories about women helping and empowering women, then this book is definitely for you. The female characters in this novel are top-notch and extremely admirable.

Attracted to its beautiful cover like a bee to honey, this sophomore novel from Elizabeth Bass Parman is set in the same Southern Tennessee town as her debut and follows Rennie and her tumultuous marriage to an abusive husband in the 1960s.

Luckily Rennie is getting help from her dead aunt’s special bees. This one is just so captivating with the perfect touch of magical realism, heart and the strength of a woman determined to chase after her dreams.

I couldn’t put it down and highly recommend it for fans of authors like Sarah Addison Allen. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

I can’t stop thinking about Bees in June. This one goes straight to the heart. It feels like an instant classic. It’s historical fiction and a character driven drama at its best. Set in the 1960s, right before the moon landing, it offers the perfect backdrop. The beauty of this book is how completely it moves you-so much that you can’t keep it in. I even called my husband to gush about it the moment I finished, and that felt like a secondary gift the book gave me…being so moved I had to share it.

Rennie is trying to breathe under the weight of a controlling husband…grief on one shoulder, fear on the other. This is a story about reclaiming a life, noticing the love around you, and finding the stubborn courage it takes to keep going.

The BEES!! They are a main character. Through touches of magical realism, we glimpse the world from their point of view. They act as guardians, at the center of the story, protecting the family. You find yourself truly caring for them-because here, they truly are family.

Rennie is tender hearted and resilient. Uncle Dixon is steady and kind, everything about him marked by the love he shared with his wife Eugenia. Though she has passed, Rennie remembers her like sunlight. She was radiant, taught her so much about life, and just impossible to forget. She had so much wisdom too and she never shied away from sharing it with Rennie. May Dean brings her own spark, but it’s Uncle Dixon, carrying Eugenia’s light forward, who helps steady Rennie’s world. Ambrose, mysterious at first and new in town, reshapes both his life and Rennie’s. Together, they all make the story unforgettable.

This book made me cheer, made me furious, and made me cry. It’s beautiful all the way through and it’s triumphant too!! A story of escape, healing, and the everyday bravery of choosing a better life.

Not just 5 ⭐️ Something higher. A billion stars! 🌟

Set in a small Tennessee town in the 1960s, just before the moon landing, this book tells the story of Renny, a woman grieving the early birth and loss of her baby. Her husband, Tiny, a failed ballplayer, is a truly horrible character—a 'butthead' you just want to reach into the book and shake. Thankfully, Renny finds solace with her wonderful Uncle Dixon, a beekeeper who has recently suffered a stroke.
What makes this story truly special is the magical realism woven throughout. In between chapters, we hear from the bees themselves, who are working to help Renny in their own way. I felt a profound connection to the bees, especially during moments when Renny made questionable choices. I spent a good portion of this book shaking my head and crying over the events that unfolded. Despite the heartbreak, the story felt like a warm hug. I absolutely adored the blend of human emotion and the enchanting world of the bees.

Lovely and heartwarming historical fiction set in the summer of the moon landing. It's a perfect example of Southern magical realism. Rennie has suffered the heartbreak of a lost baby, but receives no support from her drunken, failed baseball player husband. Their tobacco farm is also failing. The neighboring farm is owned by her Uncle Dixon. The story begins with a bee flying around her and alerting her to go check on him. And from there on, we have bits written coming from the bees. The flow of the story is easy just as if you were sitting on a porch, rocking and drinking fresh lemonade while listening to the storyteller. This book has a lot going for itself. Nostalgia, some magic and beautiful characters.

The plot is interesting enough to keep you hooked but the fact that it is set in 1969 against the backdrop of moon landing is just the cherry on top.

Rennie and her family will make you root for them. They are so pure and adorable. There are some fantasy elements but they work well in the book.

I would absolutely recommend this beautiful piece of historical fiction.

Because of that, I went to look it up on NetGalley, and was given instant access to it! And, here we are! So happy I was able to get it so last minute…just before it’s going to be released!!!

I loved this book! ❤️
I loved Rennie! ❤️
I loved Uncle Dixon and Aunt Eugenia! ❤️❤️
And… I loved The Bees!! 🐝 I mean after all, they had a voice of their own… kind of! ❤️❤️❤️

Rennie and her husband (@#*/! )Tiny live in small town Spark, TN.
Small town vibes. Small town stores. Small town mind-sets, too. 🫢
But, thankfully…small town families too! And…small town camaraderie!!

Rennie grew up here with her Aunt and Uncle always close-by and guiding her..
They have a bee farm! Rennie has wonderful memories from her childhood here! But now that she looks back on them, realizes that they mostly must’ve been made up…

Her cousin Madine and her husband, Evan are there too! It makes for a comfy-cozy setting. Kind-of…
But there’s still the fact that her husband is just NOT A GOOD GUY…

Tiny was recruited by a baseball team when they were very young… and so, he asked Rennie to marry him. But they’ve both grown up a bit since then… and things are definitely not the same. And, Rennie just recently had a really tough hardship… so she’s trying hard to recover from that.
Tiny is NOT understanding. Tiny has a hard time keeping a job… and he has other problems too…
But, when he almost kills Rennie? Well, that’s a HUGE problem.

Rennie’s life MUST change…she’s just not sure how to go about it. But, she begins to make her way. She starts to remember more about her past. She starts to believe more in HERSELF! And, that’s when the magic begins! That’s when this whole story begins to just LIGHT UP! With hope! With love! With the promise of a better future…

And in the background, her Uncle, her late Aunt, and the bees...🐝 🐝 🐝

🛑🛑 I’m stopping here! 🛑🛑

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please don’t hesitate to pick this one up!
It. Was. Wonderful!!!!

This enchanting story whisks us away to Spark, Cook County, Tennessee, during the late 1960s, set against the remarkable backdrop of the Lunar landing. It revisits the charming county town first introduced by Elizabeth Bass Parman in her debut work, “The Empress of Cook County.” While “Bees in June” nods to its predecessor, it stands on its own.

“Bees in June” is pure magic and ranks among the most beautiful books I have read this year and ever for that matter. Every page is infused with heart and soul, from the cover to the epilogue. The depiction of the bees captivated me with glimpses of their perspective woven throughout the story, providing a beautiful and unique element. Their reflections on humans, love, and life touched my heart and, at times, brought me to tears.

This empowering narrative follows Rennie, a woman who uncovers her inner strength and embraces her talents after facing the loss of a child and fleeing from domestic violence. The love and community that support Rennie as she embarks on her journey of self-discovery are simply beautiful. I wholeheartedly recommend this simply beautiful and heartwarming read.

The audio narration was absolutely perfect. The bees having their own voice added so much to the story and the overall production. I absolutely loved it.

Thanks to Harper Muse for the early listen in exchange for honest feedback.

Very enjoyable read with a touch of magical realism. Set around beekeeping, which was interesting.

I love a novel that centres around strong female characters and how they are able to overcome obstacles with the support of the kindness of others and 'Bees in June' does this.

Perhaps a little predictable but ultimately comforting.

This story was such a pleasure to read, and it’s easily one of my favorite reads this year.

Elizabeth Bass Parman’s writing is a thing of beauty, as she’s crafted a story full of feeling, depth, and emotion. Imbued with magical realism, it’s an empowering, hopeful, and unforgettable read.

Bees in June follows Rennie, a sweet and gentle woman, married to a really horrible man, but blessed with a loving uncle, cousin, and friends. She’s also cared for by a group of magical bees. As the story progresses, it was heartwarming and inspiring to watch Rennie discover her own strength.

I loved how the story is told through multiple points of view, including the bees themselves. It added to the charm, beauty, and magic of the story.

There are some painful moments that were hard to read, but the ending was satisfying and hopeful. Highly recommended.

I love a book that has an emotional storyline but also fills you with joy and hope. "Bees in June" checks off of these boxes for me! The story follows Rennie who is navigating a troubled marriage and loss of loved ones but with the help of some magical bee's, finds her true self. The charm of the setting - near Nashville, makes this book even more special for me. The southern charm, friendship and self-discovery made this one a fast and fun read!! I recommend this book to anyone who loves books set in the south and inspires you to never give up on yourself. Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC copy- this is my own opinion/review of the book.

Thank you very much to the publisher, Harper Muse, and to NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this delightful book. I had read a quick review by another early reader and requested it for myself. I am so glad that I did! While overall it is a whimsical story about magical bees and the power of love, it touches extensively on spousal abuse. So, keep this in mind if it is a trigger for you. Here are my favorite lines (from the bees):

" Why do humans insist on burdening others with their own shortcomings? Because it's easier to blame someone else for one's failure than to be the one doing the failing."
" Humans' most tenacious lies are the ones they tell themselves."

It started off a bit slow for me but then picked up and I didn't want to put it down. I recommend this novel.

I’m not going to lie...when I heard that the BEES would have a point of view, I was a bit hesitant (okay, worried, lol). But my concerns quickly vanished. Elizabeth’s writing is incredibly accessible, and I flew through the pages. From the very beginning, the story had me hooked.

This is not your typical read. It follows Rennies journey as she begins to find her way out of a dark and abusive relationship and slowly moves toward a future she never imagined for herself. It’s raw, emotional, and at times, a tough read. But it’s also hopeful. Her family, and yes, even her bees, are there to support her along the way. There's also a kind neighbor who steps in to help and becomes a friend, though Rennie struggles with trust after everything she's been through. Romance isn’t the focus, and Rennie certainly isn’t looking for love...she's just trying to survive and reclaim her life!

While it’s a closed door book, it does touch on marital intimacy and includes honest depictions of trauma and recovery. The bees almost act like guardians, offering subtle nudges or hints to the humans around them, which added a unique, almost magical element.

I want to kindly caution readers up front that this book contains heavy themes... namely, domestic abuse, child loss, emotional trauma, and language, along with mentions of witchcraft. Normally, I wouldn’t have rated a book with this kind of content so highly, but this one was truly unique. It turned out to be a real page-turner, and I found myself completely pulled into the story. So my rating is based on the emotional reaction and engagement I felt while reading. This book won’t be for everyone, but I personally found it to be a powerful and unique story. I was rooting for Rennie the whole way and deeply moved by her journey from pain into healing.

I gave this book a 4.5 rounded to a 5, while the magical elements weren't my favorite and the language at times, Rennie's redemption story was worth the read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this review reflects my honest opinion.

Bee’s in June swept me off my feet and into a small, charming town in Tennessee so vividly drawn, I felt like I was living it through the eyes of the main character. Elizabeth Bass Parman’s storytelling is nothing short of breathtaking and I felt that each moment pulsed with emotions so raw and real, I could feel it deep in my chest and soul. I found myself fiercely rooting for our protagonist, Rennie. All throughout the story I was aching for her happiness, and cheering her on as she chased the life she deserved. The narrative unfolds with such grace and intention that by the end, everything feels beautifully full circle, like the story knew exactly where it was going all along, and I was lucky enough to be along for the ride. The way the story unfolded and concluded melted my heart. It was tender, satisfying, and perfectly in tune with the emotional rhythm of the book. Parman’s prose is immersive, and her ability to capture the feelings of longing, hope, and transformation is masterful at keeping the readers‘ attention; I read it in one day, I was so captivated. The lessons in this book are also deeply rooted and unforgettable. I especially appreciate that Elizabeth Bass Parman seemed to highlight the strength and courage Rennie has, but also that she did it all by making the tough decisions herself, for herself, and when she was ready. The elements of magical realism add just enough whimsical energy to this emotionally captivating story. I found it quite beautiful and poetic, and it was everything you’d want and more in a book! This is the kind of novel that stays with you, not just as a story, but as a feeling. I’m so grateful to have experienced it. Thank you Elizabeth Bass Parman, Harper Muse, and NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
