Piper Sail Mystery Series #2

The Secret Investigator of Astor Street

Rate this book
After high school graduation, Piper Sail isn’t quite sure what her future holds—until a possible murder case lands in her lap. Filled with both the glitz and glamor of high society and the dark mafia underbelly of 1920s Chicago, The Secret Investigator of Astor Street is perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Maureen Johnson.

Piper Sail knows what she wants: to become a detective. After all, she already solved the case of her missing best friend, and there’s no shortage of crime in 1920s Chicago. But for an eighteen-year-old society girl—even one who’s currently dating a police investigator—it simply isn’t done.

That is, until a girl asks her to dig into her brother’s recent death. The police ruled it a suicide, but she's convinced it was murder. And she wants Piper to help her prove it.

In this companion to The Lost Girl of Astor Street, Piper once again grabs her notebook and plunges into the underworld of mafia-controlled Chicago. But she’ll need all her wits and courage if she wants to become The Secret Investigator of Astor Street.

Fantastic fun! I love Piper and adore Mariano. ♥️

I am a huge fan of Stephanie Morrill's work and loooovvveeed The Lost Girl of Astor Street, so when I found out there was going to be another Piper Sail mystery, I was so excited. Piper is out of high school now and trying to figure out what to do with her life. College doesn't appeal to her, and she doesn't want just any job. The only thing that thrills her is detective work. Problem is, it's the 1920s, and women aren't private investigators. But when a desperate girl comes along and asks Piper to look into her brother's death, Piper agrees.

I grew up on Nancy Drew novels, so this book delights me in so many ways. It's much more intriguing than any Nancy Drew novel. The historical back drop of the 1920s is delightfully fun. Lots of wit, vintage charm, and danger at every turn. Piper Sail is clever and daring and so much fun to root for. If you love mystery novels, you'll love this book. If you like jazz-age stories that take place in the 1920s, you ought to give this one a try. Highly recommended. I hope there's a book three!!!

10/10: 5⭐️’s

Narrator Megan Trout is excellent yet again! (I did think her Minnesotan accent was an Irish accent though😂.)

I LOVED this book. I did not want it to end!

It’s December 1924 in Chicago and 18 year old Piper Sail is on another investigation. And once again, I throughly enjoyed tagging along.

I love Piper. I love Mariano. I miss Walter. I want a dog like Sidekick.

It’s cute, sweet, funny, heartfelt, the grief is so relatable, there is mystery and mobsters and a little side dish of romance. None of it is over the top. None of it seems like too much or too little.

I HOPE Stephanie Morrill continues on with this series. I want more of Piper Sail! I am 100% a fan!!! Read/listen to book one first! Recommend both books.

Quote from the book that jumped out at me:
Chapter 22: “We have to be so careful of what we allow to define us.”

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to listen to this charming book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I sadly didn't like this book as much as the first. I think the mystery of the first had me a bit more intrigued but I still enjoyed this one. I continued liking our pre-existing characters and loved meeting new ones. This one did feel more predictable but I still enjoyed the journey.

Overall a solid series! If you're a fan of historical YA's with a young detective this could be the books for you!

Thank you Netgalley & Harper Collins for the audio copy! *all opinions are my own*

Piper Sail is BACK, and she’s still the cat’s pajamas!

In “The Secret Investigator of Astor Street,” Stephanie Morrill distills atmospheric prose, the nuances of grief, complex family drama, undiluted emotion, and the shadowed back-alleys of 1920’s Chicago into an intoxicating YA mystery riddled with more twists than a speakeasy escape tunnel.

Readers of “The Lost Girl of Astor Street” will thrill at being reunited with the intrepid Piper Sail as she takes a magnifying glass to a maybe murder, doggedly searching for the truth and a sense of purpose.

If you’re in need of a private eye with moxie and heart, The Secret Investigator of Astor Street is on the case!

This is hands-down one of my favorite reads of 2025! An impeccable storyteller, Morrill weaves a mystery that kept me turning pages long into the night. I could not guess what happened next, but I knew I wanted to be along for the ride.

Piper Sail is the type of heroine we all long to be and to know: brave but compassionate, purposeful and intent, self-aware but willing to grow. Be still my heart to the hero, too: Mariano is top-notch.

I couldn't help but appreciate Piper’s progress through the grief over losing her best friend, her moments of doubt in her own abilities but willingness to risk it all for her new friends, and the tender family dynamics developing through it all. This cast of characters is one I immediately fell in love with in The Lost Girl of Astor Street and continued to appreciate with an added depth in The Secret Investigator. All set against the dazzling backdrop of 1920s Chicago where mobsters and the mafia and modernity intertwine.

Brava Piper Sail. Let's have a third adventure please!

+4 stars for a great read

I WAS RIGHTTTTT🤌🤌
i locked in my answer early on bc usually i suspect everyone until the last minute and that feels like cheating and i was CORRECT woo!

anyways, it was so fun to be with piper again. she reminds me a lot of pip from a good girl’s guide… (idk if i said that in book 1’s review or not), and the case was pretty interesting.

the reasons why i knocked off a star:

-the pacing was a little 🤏 slow due to some repetitiveness (piper going over the same clues again and again and coming to the same conclusion)

-the romance aspect. at first i thought there was gonna be a love triangle bc jeremiah was prominent, and mariano was slacking, but then that changed… and then mariano asked to be piper’s partner and only accompanied her on one mission, for lack of better words lol. he was like there but also not?? they did have some cute moments together though, and they are a good couple, so i’ll give them that. it just seems like we never really get to see much substance to their relationship since most of their conversations are about the case she’s working on. the cannoli convo was nice though.

-i feel like the reveal was a bit of a let down. i mean it’s built up so much and then the person is just like “sigh, yes it was me 😔”. after almost getting choked, i’ll add, but still. i wanted that to be more dramatic.

-the writing style is a bit odd… scenes just cut off and transition so fast

but yeah other than that this was fun! i hope this continues to be a series.
thank you to netgalley for the arc :)

Piper Sail hasn't had it easy over the past year even though she lives on Astor Street in the affluent part of Chicago. Her father has remarried, she has graduated high school with no idea how she can have the future she desires and, hardest of all, she is still mourning the loss of her best friend. At least her relationship with Detective Mariano Cassano is moving along nicely. What she would really like to do is become a respected private investigator, but even in 1924 Chicago that isn't about to happen.

Attending a high school presentation ceremony at her old school wasn't something Piper was all that excited about but, amazingly, it provided her with two jobs, one for a secretarial position but the other was to undertake an actual investigation into an unexpected death! Now, all she has to do is be successful at both!

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Blink, but the opinions expressed are my own. I loved this. The storyline was interesting from the start, the storytelling first class and Piper, Mariano, and the other main protagonists are great to read about. There were eight years between the first two books in this series, I hope book three will appear way before that as I already want more. Highly recommend.

1924 Chicago, Illinois

Sheer Delight to discover a companion novel to the author's 2017 release featuring budding investigator Piper Sail.

As a high school graduate, Piper is certain that she wants to be a private investigator, but the 1920s isn't ready for that. However...while working as a secretary at her former high school a student approaches Piper asking if she would figure out what really happened to her brother Clarence. The student is convinced that her brother didn't commit suicide. Can Piper figure out what really happened?

Lots of wonderful historical references from the time period combined with an engaging mystery equal a wonderful novel. Now please let there be another book in the series.

My gratitude to publisher Blink for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

This was such a great book! As someone how really enjoys learning about this 20’s and prohibition era, I really appreciated and enjoyed how well researched it was. I fell in love with Piper’s character and quirks, how driven she is to help others and to solve a good mystery. I can’t wait to read the next book!

Thank you NetGalley and Stephanie Morrill for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Updated review 9/25/25:

A great listen. This was a reread/listen for me, and Megan Trout’s narration added so much depth of emotion I wasn’t expecting. Phenomenal.

Original review 7/1/25:

I really enjoyed this long-awaited follow up to The Lost Girl of Astor Street. I love the time period and how things are changing for women. But also how all of Piper’s relationships are changing, and how it affects her and informs her choices. I’d be really eager to read more in this series. Thanks to Blink for the ARC.

A glass of wine, 1920s Jazz playlist, Candles + Piper Sail = a perfect Sunday afternoon

Set in 1920s Chicago, this historical mystery follows amateur sleuth Piper Sail as she takes on her first case as a Private Investigator. She has been hired to investigate a suspicious death that’s been too quickly ruled a suicide. As a young woman navigating high society, gang activity, and her own grief, Piper balances intuition and courage in her search for the truth.

I was lucky enough to receive both the ARC and the ALC audiobook, so I read along while listening, and it really brought the story to life! I even played a 1920s jazz playlist in the background, which made the whole experience feel completely immersive and so much fun!! Would highly recommend :)

Pros
- The 1920s setting was vivid and atmospheric, from grand mansions to smoky speakeasies

- Piper’s character has grown since the first book – she’s determined, thoughtful, and more independent

- The mystery kept a strong pace with well-placed clues. One of the things I liked most was how the investigation made sense, it wasn’t just convenient leaps of intuition, but a believable chain of clues and decisions

- HER CRIME BOARD CUPBOARD 📌 every detective needs a crime board!

- Themes of grief, self-doubt and finding purpose are handled with care

- The audiobook narration was clear and engaging – it paired really well with the text

- A perfect read to pair with jazz and a cup of tea (or whiskey 😉)

Cons

- The romantic subplot with Mariano felt underdeveloped – more distant and a sub-sub-suuubplot. Though the few scenes they did get together had some very sweet moments. MORE PIPRIANO PLEASE 😋

- A few side characters that I loved in the last book didn't return (Walter :( ) and I felt this took away from the story. Her friendships were a huge part of the last book and I missed those interactions. Though hopefully a certain crooked nosed person will make another appearance! Would be interesting to see a friendship between him and Mariano

Overall it was a smart, witty & atmospheric mystery with a strong female lead and a richly described setting. I enjoyed this even more than the first book and loved how Piper’s personal growth took centre stage. With the audiobook, eARC, and a jazz playlist going, it felt like stepping right into 1920s Chicago!! Highly recommend for fans of historical YA or cosy mysteries with a bit of an edge.

I can't wait for more Piper Sail mysteries to be written!!

The long awaited sequel to The Lost Girl of Astor Street finds Piper Sail navigating life after high school, and taking on the case of a investigating a young man's mysterious death.
An engaging read that brings to life the class divide of the the 1920's, as Piper balances her life as a society girl where an advantageous marriage is still expected and her investigations into the seedier mafia underside of Chicago. A well written read that evokes the time period well, and does a good job of presenting complex family dynamics, and coming of age in 1920's Chicago, we see Piper's home life change as well as her relationship with Mariano mature and grow.

A solid historical fiction read that deals with tough topics, growing up, family, and love. I liked that we see Piper deal with not knowing all the answers, but pushing forward and searching for answers. She's ready for the most daring of challenges, and is spunky enough to take risks in search of truth. Great balance between the mystery, as well as character growth and interactions, with a compelling storyline. It didn't disappoint!

If you're looking for a 1920s Chicago mystery with an amateur sleuth, look no further than Piper Sail! The mystery will keep you wondering, while Morrill skillfully leaves the clues you need all along the way.

I appreciated how Morril tactfullly and purposefully wove in Piper's hurt, trauma, and healing from Lydia's death throughout the book and even tied it into the plot. It added an extra level of believability.

While it made sense for Mariano to feature less in the story with the coming-of-age and independence character arc for Piper, I did wish that he'd been involved more beyond the romance subplot.

Fans of The Lost Girl of Astor Street will enjoy getting to tag along with Piper for another case.

Cautions: moderate romance; several kisses; one blasphemy; the case Piper investigates is initially believed to have been suicide, and the topic comes up several times; brief, non-graphic moderate violence

'The Secret Investigator of Astor Street' is the second book in the 'A Piper Sail Mystery' series.

The second book is as good as the first one, with Piper venturing into yet again another mystery, which was as twisty and intriguing as the one in the first book.

The atmosphere was great as well, and there were a lot of details that contributed to it a lot.

The character development was also intense and well-crafted.

Finally, the audiobook was well narrated and produced, but the time skips were not well handled.

I loved The Secret Investigator of Astor Street. Morrill blends history, humor, and danger beautifully, the twists and turns are so fun, and the characters are well developed and surprising in a real-life way that has stuck with me days after turning the last page. This was just as wonderful as the first one! I loved getting to know Piper better and seeing her in action on her first case where she doesn’t have a connection to the victim. This requires her to use her smarts and personality to get the information she needs. The blossoming relationship with Mariano as well as the complicated relationships she has with her family add a layer of depth to the story that had me just as captivated as the mystery. I can’t wait for the next one!

I really enjoyed the first one, and this surpassed that. The mystery was more intriguing, and had more twists and turns than the first one. The characters relationships continued developing well, and I really enjoyed the author acknowledging how people would have actually treated Piper in the 1920s, rather than just pretending that her working as a private detective would have been fine. I also thought Piper’s own thoughts on being a private detective played out really nicely, from ‘oh no I can’t’ to ‘I work for a private detective’ to ‘I am a private detective’. Overall really enjoyable. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Move over Nancy Drew, a new young female detective is in town.

I really enjoyed this story. The mystery was a much stronger one than the first book and its clear that the author has gotten more confident with her characters and her setting. Piper is introduced to a girl whose brother committed suicide - a fact the sister refuses to accept. Eager to prove herself and find her own way in the world, she takes on the case but it quickly proves to be one full of many twists and turns. The case was fun, Piper deserved to solve it.

Just as good as Piper's investigation was the way in which the author explored the aftermath of a tragedy. Grief litters the pages, different people dealing with different issues in different ways. Each person's grief feels very real and honest, sometimes raw.

Mariano, Piper's boyfriend, is as adorable as ever, albeit with his own issues. My only compliant was there wasn't nearly enough of him, but I love how comforting and supportive he was, as well as proud of who she was.

I loved this sequel as much as the first book. I love that Piper has grown and changed since the first book, but she is still herself too if that makes sense? I am sad about the absence of characters I loved from the first book but it left room for her development with new ones. This mystery left me on the edge of my seat. And I liked that it wasn’t as personal to her this time. I just wanted to know answers!! Pipers struggle came with wanting to be a detective in a world where women just didn’t do that yet. I absolutely LOVE her and Mariano. Their understanding and love for each other is beautiful but it didn’t take over the story. They are the best team and AW! Mariano is such a green flag. Piper is more mature about relationships in this one too. The AUDIOBOOK is amazing!! The narrator Megan Trout is perfect for Piper and all the characters. I want more Piper Sail mysteries!!!

SPOILERS and book notes:
December 1, 1924 Chicago, Illinois
I miss Walter who is in California with his girlfriend playing baseballl full time. Lydia the dead best friend. Jane is married to pipers father Mr sail. Mariano Cassano is pipers detective boyfriend. Emma is pipers best friend. Jeremiah crane is Emma’s older newspaper working brother and loves piper. Jack is Mariano’s flirty roommate. Piper wants to be a detective but girls can’t! So she is a secretary for the girls school she just graduated. Hannah is Lydia’s younger sister. Mariano is so sweet and protective!! So supportive in her case of a suiside that the younger sister of the brother says is murder she is taking on. But Mariano hasn’t said he loves her. And his ex and his brother have a baby… There is still a ton of thought and talk about grief for Lydia. Which is great and healthy and realistic I’m just getting sick of it lol. Which is horrible haha. Mariano to piper: “Some days you are the only person in this world I like” this is what Mariano says when they run into Jeremiah at the movie theater “he wants you, I’m dating you, it will always be awkward between the three of us.” Aw! Jeremiah is the one that comes to save her at the casino! BOoo it makes me like him. But Mariano is her man!!!!! Mariano is amazing. Instead of telling her not to put herself in danger, he asks to become her partner in the investigation. And she says yes!! They love each other just how they are! Oh my heck this mystery has me on the edge of my seat!!! WHO DID IT!!?? And why do I love all the characters and don’t want any of them to be the bad guy!!? Also Mariano and pipers love confessions to each other was SO AMAZING. They communicate SO WELL. They care so much for each other in such healthy ways. I love them both with all my heart. Oh my heck elz was stealing money from Clarance and that is why he ended the relationship. “I wasn’t there to protect you from that guy slamming your head against the wall, will you at least let me protect your head from the rain?” Hehehe as he holds an umbrella over her head. His left side soaked bc he was protecting her. And then she thanks him for sticking around with her hehe and he says he doesn’t have much choice and they kiss. I love him and her. Oh yeah and Daniel the roommate was the actual cheater that framed Clarance and then the murderer. And then another Presley girl presented another case!!

Title: The Secret Investigation of Astor Street
Series: Piper Sail Mystery Book #2
Author: Stephanie Morrill
Format: 🎧
Narrator: Megan Trout
Publisher: Harper Collins Focus/Blink
Genre: Mystery Thriller, Historical, Teen/YA
Audiobook Pub Date was: August 5, 2025

Was drawn to this novel as it reminded me of how and when my love of mysteries started. I lived in a small town where the Library was run by volunteers so opened in the afternoons. I would sit on the steps outside and wait for it to open so I could get my next Trixie Belden or Nancy Drew novels. However, Piper gets more involved!

Setting Chicago 1920
Piper Sail has graduated high school with no plans to go to colleges as she wants to be a detective. She is currently working in the student’s records Department at the school where she attended.
Last year she solved the case of her missing best friend Lidia. However, in 1920 an eighteen-year-old society girls- actually any female - it wasn’t done! They were mothers and if worked they were teachers, nurses or a secretary.
Piper is dating a police investigator so figures she has a chance to get into investigation work. .Especially when she is approached by a former classmate who wants her to look into her brother Clarence’s recent death. The police ruled it a suicide, but she is convinced it was murder. She wants Piper to help her prove it. Piper, of course, is willing to help!- plus will be paid was a PI.
Her investigation shows her a difference side of Clarence. He may have been a model student but got ‘kicked out’ of college for cheating plus is hanging out with a crowd at the “The Fox’ a popular Chicago casino. When she meets Elspeth who was dating Clarence and works at “The Fox’[ Piper knows she must go there and speak to Liam in particular but the others as well. However, “The Fox’ is not a place for women-unless a stripper or any gal who works there. Elspeth tells her that the boss is going to be out of town and she can get Piper in as her helper as a Cigarette Girl but will need to wear a costume – Piper thinks Yikes!

I really enjoyed this and looking forward to Book #3. I like her blossoming relationship with Mariano and hope more develops in the next adventure,

It was fun for me as that Piper reminds me a bit of Nancy Drew.
In fact, I was drawn to this novel as it reminded me of how and when my love of mysteries started. I lived in a small town where the Library only opened in the afternoons. I would sit on the steps outside and wait for it to open so I could get my next Trixie Belden or Nancy Drew novel.
True, Piper gets far more involved!

At the end of the book, author Stephanie Morrell does tell us that the story is Historical Fiction and yes there is a lot that did happen in Chicago in the 1920 but also tells us the parts that she took liberties and used her imagination.

In this sequel we follow Piper Sail some months after her graduation from school. She is still dating Mariano, although with his work as a cop picking up they don't get to see each other as much, dealing with family dramas, and has just started a temporary secretary job at her previous school. While at work one day, she is approached by a student whose brother has recently passed in what the cops are saying is suicide, but Louisa doesn't think that sound like her brother at all. Piper starts investigating and runs into new and old trouble. I appreciated the growth we see her go through throughout the story in both her investigations and her family life. I am the minority in that I was happy to not see Mariano as much. I don't particularly care for him as a love interest. I find him too perfect and a little boring and he isn't allowed to do wrong for very long. It's immediately dismissed away, which I found a little irritating. I do like that we mostly focus on Piper and her personal growth as a person in these stories. I would be interested to read another one in the series if the author does end up writing more.

If Sherlock Holmes and Nancy Drew had a baby and that baby grew up to be a 1920s Chicago socialite with zero chill about justice...

Listen, I picked up The Secret Investigator of Astor Street expecting a quaint mystery with some light sleuthing and maybe a swoon-worthy romance subplot. What I got was Piper Sail: part bloodhound, part bulldozer, and 100% unstoppable force of nature who makes Jessica Fletcher look like a casual hobbyist.

Our girl Piper doesn't just investigate mysteries—she becomes the mystery. "Where did my friend go?" turns into "Why am I now personally involved with Chicago's entire criminal underworld?" faster than you can say "but I'm just a debutante!" The woman has the investigative subtlety of a marching band, and honestly? It works.

And can we talk about Mariano? This man showed up to be a love interest and accidentally became the voice of reason, which must have been exhausting for him. Poor guy's just trying to be supportive while Piper treats every social gathering like a potential crime scene. "Would you like to dance?" "Not now, Mariano, I'm analyzing suspicious mustache patterns."

Morrill writes 1920s Chicago like she personally attended every speakeasy and can confirm the gin quality. The historical details are so rich you'll start expecting a flapper to walk out of your closet. The mystery itself has more twists than a pretzel factory, and just when you think you've figured it out, Piper uncovers another layer that makes you question everything you thought you knew about wealthy Chicago society (spoiler: they're all hiding something).

Fair warning: this book will make you want to wear pearls and solve crimes, possibly simultaneously. Side effects may include an irresistible urge to investigate your neighbors and an unhealthy obsession with 1920s fashion.

The Verdict: Four stars because it's absolutely delightful, even if Piper's detective methods gave me anxiety. Sometimes the best mysteries are the ones where you're not sure if the protagonist is brilliantly intuitive or just really lucky. Either way, I'm here for it.

P.S. - Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own, as is my newfound desire to own a magnifying glass.

How interesting! I enjoyed this one much more than book one including enjoying the narrator. While obviously the same voice my experience was if it was an entirely different person!

It was narrated by Megan Trout and she spoke at a great swift conversational pace for the 1x speed and didn’t cross that line of being overly dramatic.

The story itself was more enjoyable and executed better as well. Our main character Piper Sail has now graduated High School although she does come off a bit older than her stated age, even taking into consideration the year it takes place in. And there is a bit of repetitiveness which takes the reader out of the flow a bit but consuming the audiobook helps moves that along.

So if you enjoy historical fictions combines with mysteries this may be a fun laidback read for you to consume this fall season as it comes out August 5th

I am thankful to have gotten a complimentary audio ALC from Blink through NetGalley to read which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily leave a review.

My general rating system is below. Since I primarily read ARC books I rate according to how I think like minded readers will receive the book. I will round up or down depending on many factors and try not to let my personal wants affect a books ratings.

⭐️ Hated It but pushed through as I don’t DNF ARCs I have received.
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, content issues, poorly edited.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but it had something that stopped me from rounding up. Usually the book may have much more potential than what was given. I recommend it but with reservations.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I Really enjoyed it or think others will. These are solid reads that I definitely would recommend for a variety of reasons.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! These are books that remain rent free in my head for well after unfinished the book. It can be for a variety of reasons from being very well written or just the vibes that captured my mind. These books are also ones I would probably read again

Thank you for NetGalley, Harper Collins Focus, Blink and the author Stephanie Morrill for sending me an ALC & ARC of this book.

After finishing the first book in this series, I immediately jumped into the second because I needed to know what happened next with Piper Sail. But as with the first book, this one took a while to really hit its stride. I honestly got a bit bored between 10% and 35% but pushed through because I had a long drive ahead of me and needed something to listen to. And I’m honestly glad I did.

I continue to enjoy Piper and her very modern way of thinking especially for 1924. Even though she gives off this aura of confidence, she still questions what her future holds and what she’s doing with her life. Her continued doubts of if she should investigate and insecurities about being perceived as a private investigator are so authentic to that time period. I do continue to want to strangle the men around her, namely Jeremiah in this adventure, who believe they know what’s best for her without ever thinking to ask her what she wants.

I do continue to love Mariano. He never once tries to tell her what she should or should not do. He listens to her, asks smart questions and gives her different perspectives to consider. He finds ways to show her he loves her by protecting her without being over the top.

Although the lack of communication around the state of their relationship does prove incredibly annoying. It hovers very close to the miscommunication trope that I wanted so badly to roll my eyes. And the excuses Piper makes for their relationship issues made me want to chuck my kindle a couple of times. But she’s young and this is her first relationship so I try to give some grace.

I would love to see this series continue. I love a smart woman with gumption who doesn’t care for babies or desire to follow in the path most expected of her. Especially now that she can no longer be considered a “secret” private investigator. I hope the author continues and the books are able to catch me and hold me from the start.

Stephanie Morrill is back and she is 2/2 on the Piper Sail mysteries!

When I read the first book in the series, The Lost Girl of Astor Street, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it, but remember thinking that the actual mystery and romance aspects were lacking. Well, the follow up may have taken eight years, but I’m so happy to say that it was worth it. I felt more invested in the romance this time, with us finally getting to experience a bit of conflict for Mariano and Piper that made him a more complete character for me. I felt that the mystery was much more flushed out and less expected this time, with red herrings that made more sense contextually and a more intriguing resolution.

The Secret Investigator went in a much different direction than Lost Girl, but still fully retained the things that made it so, so good: the super thorough research into Jazz Age Chicago, the exploration of Piper’s transition to adulthood, and of course, sneak peeks into some Prohibition Era hijinks and debauchery. This book had me googling automats, mimeographs, and B/G sandwiches, providing a fully immersive setting that had me strangely yearning to live in the 20’s (of course, only if I could be a rich, white girl like Piper).

I’m sort of a snob and rarely feel an actual connection to protagonists; that being said, I find Piper so lovable and thoroughly enjoy how much time we spend on her character development, her relationship with her family, her insecurities, and her ongoing grief. Despite the difference of a century, many of her thoughts feel universally relatable and resonate with me even now. The aftermath of events from the first book realistically continue to play a major role in the lives of Piper and those around her, allowing us to watch the story continue to develop and compound, which not all serial mysteries accomplish. Unfortunately, I would say this means you definitely have to read the first book to enjoy the second.

Overall, I absolutely recommend this series and can only hope there are more to come!

A big thank you to Blink and NetGalley for providing me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was absolutely enthralled by this book. I got hooked onto the first book in the series and started this one immediately after. Stayed up till 2 am listening to this (I'm not a night owl) and I have no regrets. Everything about the story was so convincing and satisfying, I am in awe. It's a mystery at it's core, but I love that the author takes the time to expand on Piper's life outside of the sleuthing, and her range of very relatable roadblocks and emotions.

The romance in this one is top notch, chef's kiss, every compliment I could ever give. I was initially hoping she got together with Jeremiah, but the author gave me plenty reason to appreciate Mariano and everything he bought to the story. After all the drama with them, I'm glad there was a good conversation that played out between them, and I'm very pleased with the way their communication skills were developed and shone through.

Life progresses onward with other characters too, and we get glimpses of Piper's father and Jane's married life. I appreciate how there's themes handled with sensitivity and care, conversations surrounding the family were truly captivating. The story has a beautiful flow to it, is so easy to read and get addicted to. I love Piper so much! I'm genuinely bursting with joy and applauds for this perfection of a book and characters. The narrator has done a great job that just adds to this experience.

Only downside is that I miss seeing Walter and more of Nick. I think they were splendid side characters in the first book, and I would've loved for them to be a bigger part of this book. I'm hoping they do get more showtime in the third book. I'm also desperately praying for the third book to come out ASAP, it's a need at this point. Stephanie Morrill, you are a genius and an amazing author, thank you for this gen of a book. I can't wait to read more.

Phenomenal sequel to the first Piper Sail Mystery novel! It’s been a long wait but I am thrilled that this series is continuing. Love the edgy Nancy Drew vibe. Instead of bucolic River Heights, Piper sleuths in mobster-run Chicago in the 1920s, a full decade before Nancy put on her deerstalker hat! Makes for some classic atmospheric amateur sleuthing!

Piper’s dream of becoming a full-fledged private investigator seems destined to go unfulfilled. She is constrained by the expectations placed on a recently graduated high society young miss (aka get married and serve at charity functions.) Can she help it if she excels at crime solving instead of flower arranging?!

So her indomitable spirit and gritty determination seem destined to remain buried in a stifling clerical job until a sleuthing opportunity presents itself. Ofcourse, she can’t resist diving in. Love the complexity of the investigation, the intriguing plot twists, and the tremendous character growth Piper experiences along the way. I’m also a fan of the way her relationship with her police detective boyfriend develops as well. He is refreshingly supportive, a truly forward thinking man of the times!

Tumultuous complications in Piper’s home life, and even in part of her romance, add extra depth to the story and kept me riveted. Definitely a read-in-one-sitting kinda book…or in my case compulsively listen because, once again, I enjoyed Megan Trout’s narration. Love the way she portrays all the characters, especially Piper. And she captures all the intricacies of emotion and humour…and even hair-raising danger…to perfection.

My thanks to Harper Collins Focus / Blink and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.
