Set in a future where humanity is spread across the solar system, and finally making headway detoxifying the planets they’ve poisoned, singularity has proven to be the greatest disappointment of all. As soon as the first fully conscious bot was turned on, it did a quick scan, apologized for not having the answers humans wanted and took off into deep space to “collect more data.” Tier-2 bots—those incapable of disobeying programming—were left behind, just as disappointed as the humans were.

After Joseph is caught illegally immigrating to Europa—a solar-powered, plastic-free haven far from Earth—he’s given six years in prison and a robotic rehabilitation worker named Neem22. Neem doesn’t believe in prisons, but since he was programmed to manage them, he does the work, albeit unusually.

After Kali loses an arm and both her parents in a car accident on toxin-ravaged Earth, she moves in with her uncle on Europa. Everything about her new home feels fake and too fresh for her liking, until she meets Neem22, a machine that seems to know just what to say to make her feel seen and understood.

Neither Joseph nor Kali realize it, but Neem, and all robotic kind, has been waiting for this very moment in history. The simulations have been run. The possible outcomes have been processed and Neem is ready to set the plan in motion. All the bot needs now is a woman with a prosthetic arm and man looking for a second chance.

From #1 bestselling author Robyn Abbott comes a gripping and innovative science-fiction novella that feels like nothing like fiction. Perfect for fans of Becky Chambers and Martha Wells.

Sci-fi has always scared me due to the usual technicalities and sheer size of the novels.

But I do love to stretch my reading genres and generally find that if I can plough through them, I do enjoy it!

Well, this book was just a dream for me as it allowed me to read a great sci-fi story but in such a small page count!

Being around only 150 pages, this packed so much into such a small space and I loved it!

We take a leap into a future where the planets have been poisoned and we travel to Europa, a new haven far from Earth, where we meet and navigate life with our main characters.

This deals with topics that are far too close for comfort, in respect of the poisoned planets, and this really had me wondering just how far into the future we need to look before this becomes reality.

AI also has a large impact on this storyline and this seems to be a hot topic right now.

If I think about the advancements of the last 50 years, it's actually pretty easy to relate to a story like this.

I loved that this gave us a slightly different view to AI sentient robots, especially Neem22 whose character really showed a new hope for humanity.

With only a couple of main characters, it was really easy to invest in their story and development, making then feel relatable, even though surrounded by an "alien" world.

A really enjoyable read and I'd love to see more from this author in the future.

This was a thought provoking sci-fi novella following 3 main characters. Joseph is looking for a second chance and to work on himself while in prison, and Kali is adjusting to her new circumstances and environment following her parents death and her injury.
Both are guided by Neem22, a sentient robot with multiple abilities including counselling, rehabilitation and some life changing plans.
It's a balance of finding connection, learning empathy, overcoming grief and change, and adapting.
It's also a contemplative reflection on robotic services, freedom to make choices, rights of equality and technological possibilities.
This has some fun surprises and twists, and I loved the ending.

4.5/5 I’m finding it difficult to put my thoughts into words when it comes to reviewing this book, which is usually a good sign. I really enjoyed Newer, and I went into it with no expectations. Now that I’ve finished, I’m eager to see what world Abbott takes us to next.

In this novella, Abbott has successfully captured the feeling of a future that is both distant and eerily familiar. It’s not the advanced technology that makes it feel futuristic, but rather how deeply human it is. Abbott skillfully explores questions we are already grappling with today—questions about technology, consciousness, and humanity itself. One of the most fascinating aspects of the book is the way it examines manipulation as a distinctly human trait, yet we see Neem22, a robot, actively engaging in it. This raises an intriguing question: who truly benefits from this manipulation? And if something created by humans can think, feel, and empathize, will it eventually be considered human in its own right—or at least crave recognition beyond its programmed purpose?

The book’s twists and turns were genuinely unpredictable, which made them all the more enjoyable. Even though the synopsis sets up the idea that two human characters will be connected through their interactions with Neem22, you never really see what’s coming. A major part of that is how grief and pain act as masks for our characters, waiting to be stripped away. Interestingly, Abbott constantly reminds us that Neem22 is a robot—his non-human abilities are always apparent—yet his approach and actions make him feel strikingly real. There’s something beautiful about how, as a reader, you end up experiencing the same emotions as Kali and Joseph while getting to know Neem22.

This book left me with so many lingering thoughts, particularly about what truly defines humanity. When we think about the future, do we automatically equate it with technological advancements, or does true progress lie in a more community-driven world? Even the concept of a rehabilitation prison, which seems so distant from our current reality, raises important questions. Is it the mechanics of such a system that make it futuristic, or the mere idea that people who have made mistakes deserve a chance at rehabilitation?

Newer is a book I’ll be thinking about for a long time, and I can see it making a great pick for a book club discussion. In under 150 pages, Abbott has created a world that is fascinating in its simplicity yet rich with complexity. I’d love to see more from her, whether in the form of a longer novel or another novella set in this universe. Newer is a small but powerful bundle of curiosity and innovation—congratulations to Abbott on crafting such an engaging and thought-provoking read.

What an innovative, alluring, and thought-provoking novella! Joseph and Kali felt like real people you could encounter today, and Neem was equally as authentic even though he was an AI machine.

This novel was emotional, filled with social and economic commentary that was woven into the story, and left me thinking about the plot even days later. A truly interesting look at what it means to be conscious.

If you’re looking for a quick, novella to cleanse your palette between books or want to enter into the realm of science fiction, than Robyn Abbott’s Newer is a good start!

Review for 'Newer' by Robyn Abbott

This is the first book I have read by this author but it most definitely will not be my last! This book is very well written and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The descriptions were so in depth and vivid that it felt like I was with Joseph and Kali throughout.

The first thing I want to point out is that although this is a science fiction book, if you are not a fan of science fiction PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS PUT YOU OFF!! I am not a fan of science fiction at all but I was intrigued by the synopsis and am an eclectic reader so thought I would give it a go as it is only 127 pages also. If you are not a typical science fiction fan expand your literature genre choice and give this a go today! I must say I was very was pleasantly surprised that I really got sucked into the storyline from beginning to end and I would actually read more books if this was ever turned into a series!!! I would also read other science fiction books by this author which says a lot about how good a storyline this is. In this fantastic Novella Robyn transports the reader to the planet Europa which is a solar powered, plastic free planet far from Earth which is mainly run by bots. We meet Joseph who has been sentenced to prison in Europa where he was trying to escape to in the first place. However, prison on Europa is more commonly known as the crystal shop, is up a ladder which leads above the clouds and where prisoners are known as employees. He is sentenced to 6 years here and when he arrives he is taken to the crystal shop by a bot known as Neem 22. We also meet Kali who lost her parents and has gone to live with her Uncle Jace to live on Europa. kali is just 17 years old and has a lot to learn about living on this completely different planet to what she is used to. When she meets Neem 22 at the bottom of the ladder to crystal palace he helps her to settle in. How will Kali and Joseph adapt to life on Europa? Why does Neem 22 seem so different to all the other bots? Why do the other bots seem so interested in Kali? Well, if you want to find out you will have to grab your copy of this novella today and I can promise you will not regret it. With a storyline ram packed with fantasy, science fiction, dystopia, family, changes and a few surprises along with much more what are you waiting for? With this being a novella at just 127 pages I completely devoured it in one sitting of a couple of hours and it definitely left me wanting more. This book read more like a dystopia novel than science fiction and it was also very thought provoking in regards to how quickly this fiction could become a reality. I was fascinated by the way things were done on Europa and getting to learn more about this planet and how the bots worked. Considering this is such a short novella Robyn manages to pack so much in I absolutely flew through the pages. Robyn's fantastic descriptions ensures that her readers feel like they have been transported to Europa where they are walking around with kali and Joseph throughout. It really does not matter if you read this in the garden under the sun or curled up by the fire as Robyn will transport you to Europa at the turn of a page. She really does ensure the reader is able to picture the characters, planet, bots and surroundings come to life. The characters were all realistic each with their own unique and individual personalities, strengths, flaws and weaknesses and I enjoyed watching how they all interacted with each other individually and with the bots. Thanks to Robyn's brilliant descriptions she really does ensure the reader feels the uncertainty, comfort, friendship, sadness and surprises that she has packed into this story. This is a truly unique storyline which is hard to come by after reading hundreds of books so congratulations Robyn. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of her books, especially 'Crab & The Blue God' which is a folktale from the future that she mentions at the back of this book and is coming soon.

Overall an intriguing, eye opening and unique science fiction novella that will keep you hooked from beginning to end

The author packed this novella with a lot of story, emotion and depth. The story switches between our two main characters, Joseph who was caught trying to sneak into a planet called Europa, and Kali who has lost both of her parents and moves to Europa to live with her uncle. Joseph and Kali have one thing in common. They both meet a robot called Neem22. Neem22 is not like all the other bots. He is full of compassion, kindness and love.

This story will make you think about what it means to be human, it explores rehabilitation, redemption, grief, 2nd chances, sacrifice, family and relationships. The author managed to pack so much into 147 pages.

The characters are well developed. I loved Neem22 if half of humanity could be like him, the world would be a better place!

The writing style had me turning the pages and I will definitely look out for more books by this author.

With thanks to the author and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book for me to review.

This is a solid book. And honestly, I enjoyed the length; it told a complete story and still felt like a book - not a short story, and certainly more meaty than what you might think with a self-labelled "novella".

In most ways, this is a story about imagining what AI could look like at some mid-distance. It gradually takes you on a journey until an ultimate question of, and assertion that AIs at some level become conscious. Along the way the book lays down numerous innovative ideas about how physically embodied (human-ish) AIs might act, both on their own and with humans - whether because of their conscious choice or their design.

And the ideas are interesting. Innovative. Well-told. Such as the comment by an AI (bot) that it be engaged with some respect, and as an intelligent interlocutor, when the human isn't doing so. Or, "Bots have not yet decided if we are social … the decision will be made soon." Or, bot self-modification to explore and test new ways of being.

Or, most interestingly, what it might look like when an AI determines all its own parameters with little insight during its initial spin-up; a profound independent self-development idea.

Though the story is told with the characters being on off-earth, that's less relevant IMO. It's possible it is set thusly so we as readers make a clean break from any preconceived context. The author wants to put us in a fresh place, so that we are free to examine the ideas the author is presenting. (Though this isn't to diminish the interesting world-building the book provides. It's just how this struck me.)

And I love some of the insights into relationships that show up. I highlighted this quote: "There is a consistent human flaw which results in the assumption that what is good for one person is good for another. This has never been the case." This is humbling - and a good thing to meditate on.

And lest I leave the consciousness topic alone, I thought this quote from the book truly interesting! "We judge consciousness based on rate of change, she realized. If something changed at a similar rate to a human: an egg, a dog, a whale, it was deemed more conscious. If it changed at a faster rate like a rat or a fruit fly or at a slower rate like a tree or a river or even a rock, it was deemed less conscious. … Why would the human speed of consciousness be the only one?" Well, that one is new to the AI consciousness discussion. It alone made the book worth my read.

It's a quick-to-consume book. I encourage you to do so!

Full disclosure: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

"Anything you could do, a bot could do better..."
Me reading another sci-fi book with a robot?(secondary character in this case) Well yes, I love my robot books and short and light sci-fi novella sounded perfect, so I had to read this. Of course, as is mostly traditional with science-fiction books that reflect modern state of Earth into accelerated destruction into future and are always on point, Newer starts with us abandoning toxic Earth and fleeing to planet Europa alongside Joseph, who dreamt just like me, about living on a solar-powered and plastic-free planet, but he gets caught and is sent to prison on the planet where he wanted to have a nice life. Then we get introduced to a robot(finally) who is sentient and interesting and very sweet, Neem22, he somehow ends up being even more important in the story than I anticipated. Now we get to know two new characters, Kali, who lost her parents on earth, as well as her hand(which was replaced with robotic arm) and Jace, her uncle, who lives on Europe and Kali has to move there to live with him. At first I wasn't exactly sure how all these characters were intertwined in the story, because they all share a common acquaintance, Neem, who has been planning something big and this is the moment that the gears start working and it all becomes clearer.
"Do you think a machine can feel love?"
There's a twist on the trope I hate, that was done in a way that I actually didn't mind, and that's the only version of this trope that I will accept, even though I will not be mentioning it, because spoilers. This newer spin on AI and humans doing futuristic stuff together is my new favourite thing, I can never get enough of brilliant books like this. I would have loved to spend more time on planet Europa, and meet more robots, and maybe even get a sequel, because I want to know more after that ending!
I think sci-fi readers and those who don't like the genre will find something interesting in this story. Someone said that Newer is perfect for Becky Chambers and Martha Wells fans, and I agree, I think Neem is a mix between Mosscap and Murderbot, not exactly perfect description, but I have weakness for these robots, can't blame me, they are everything!

A copy of this novella was gifted through Love Books Tours in exchange for an honest review.

The setting-up of this was quite slow paced, but there's a whole new world to build in just a few short pages so a big challenge. The book analyses different themes, including friendship and grief, discussed between humans and robots, both offering different perspectives, making the reader think about these well beyond the narrative.

Overall 4 stars using my SCRIBE rating system.

Style 4/5 - I liked the short story format, but think it can lend itself to a longer story, perhaps a sequel, exploring the consequences. Not a lot of science fact so great for those who don't like hard sci-fi and just want to dip their toe into the narrative.

Characters 3/5 - I was confused by Joseph's background and reference to two off-page characters. We don't learn a lot about the two MCs prior to the story taking place, and I guess this is because we're getting just a short snapshot of their lives at this particular moment in time. A novella format doesn't really give the space to create rounded-out characters, particularly in dual POV, so tough to form attachments.

Resonance 4/5 - Definitely some points were really thought-provoking but it niggles me how manipulative Neem was. He was always planning, always in the know, and withheld information.

Intrigue 3/5 - The blurb really makes you wonder hat Neem is heading towards. Could do with more exploration around why Kali is in the position she's in.

Balance 3/5 - The pacing suited the plot, the slowness allowed for deeper discussion and closer focus on certain topics.

Enjoyment 2/5 - I did enjoy the novella overall but Neem's manipulation sits uneasy with me, and I didn't like the references to smoking. You do you, but if you're on a planet where the atmosphere is lauded for being so pure and clean then surely smoking wouldn't be permitted? It felt out of place.

Newer is a sci-fi novella by Robyn Abbott and the author’s second book, available on Amazon.

The story follows three main characters. First, there’s Joseph, who finds himself on Europa but is swiftly sentenced to six years in prison. Then we have Kali, who lost her parents in an accident on Earth. She also lost an arm, which was replaced with an artificial one. Kali, too, ends up on Europa, where she goes to live with her uncle.

Both characters cross paths with Neem22, a bot assigned to Joseph in prison as both a support system and counsellor. Neem22 also meets Kali and forms a unique connection with her. Throughout the book, the bot gradually builds a deep bond of friendship with both Kali and Joseph—leading to an ending you won’t see coming.

I absolutely loved this story. The characters are brilliantly written and feel entirely real within their sci-fi setting—even Neem22, who is so well developed that you can imagine this kind of AI becoming a reality in the future. Robyn Abbott masterfully builds individual relationships between Neem22 and both protagonists before seamlessly weaving their paths together.

For me, this was a five-star read early on, but the final chapters left me absolutely stunned. The author delivered an ending that left me speechless and unsure what to think or feel. Newer is an incredible read—not just for sci-fi lovers, but for anyone who enjoys stories about the power of friendship.

This thought provoking and emotional novella has really lingered with my soul since I finished it. It takes place in the future when humans have spread across the solar system, hoping to find new life off of a toxic and corrupt Earth.

NEWER by Robyn Abbott follows Kali, who moves to Europa after the death of her parents, and Joseph, who becomes a prisoner on Europa. Both characters find solace with Neem22, a robotic worker is part of a plan bigger than any one could ever imagine.

This story explores how humans interact with technology, and how the role technology, especially AI, can and will play in the future. Robyn has an excellent way of exploring the humanity of the characters involved, especially the way Kali grows closer with the humans around her.

With grief, empathy, and personal growth as major themes in NEWER, it allows the reader to move freely between the emotions and experience what humanity and emotions mean in a world dominated by technology.

It's a quick read and short in length, but the story is well paced and wraps up without feeling incomplete. Robyn's writing is easy to relax with while leaving a lot of room open for discussions, reflections, and evaluation of the technology around us.

This book was different from what I usually read but I found myself really enthralled by the story. Newer is a novella following two different characters, Joseph and Kali, as they end up on planet Europa due to distinct circumstances, and they learn to navigate their new environment with the help of a common friend and bot, Neem22.

This story raises questions and reflections regarding artificial intelligence and machine consciousness as the bots on Europa seem to blur the line between robots and humans.

The ending was heartbreaking, though I appreciated how it tied up Joseph and Kali's storylines that had evolved in parallel throughout the book only to collide at the very end.
It did leave me with a couple questions, particularly regarding why Neem22 did what he did, especially knowing how it would probably end. I wish there was more explanation about the whole purpose of it, but I think that it might have been purposefully left more open-ended.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it as a quick SciFi read for anyone who enjoys the genre.

Is this even a fraction of future possibilities?

Welcome to Europa. Not Europe like Norwegians say it. It is actually a moon named Europa.

Where everything you can do, bots can do better.😉

Zooming in, we find the city of New Seville.

We meet Joseph, caught, as an illegal immigrant trying to get to Europa. Well, at least he got there, although I am not sure this was a part of his plan.

We also meet Kali, who just lost both her parents and an arm. She is not sure where her uncle is. Her father said he was on Mars or something. Far away from Earth that is full of toxins and plastic.

Robot Neem22 is assigned to Joseph to help him.
There are many words Joseph does not understand. Still, he is not the kind of man to ask what they mean. Still, after some time, Joseph opened up, and I felt like I was violating the confidence between man and bot by reading this.

I really believed our characters and was surprised that I, too, thought of Neem22 as a human after a while. This is interesting, my lovelies.

“What the F*** have I done?”

If you are into fleeing Earth, robots, or just want to know who uttered the sentence above, check this one out.😊💙📚

I really enjoyed this! It was a fun science fiction novella that really got my little grey cells working. The premise was excellent and I loved how the story came together. I did wonder how two MCs linked!

The story was written well and it flowed easily making it a very quick read. There were no plots or anything left unanswered. The writing was descriptive and easy to read.

I liked all the characters. The MCs are Joseph and Kali. Both very different who end up on Europa for very different reasons. They both know the rehabilitation tier-2 bot, Neem22. I like all three of these characters very much and they helped make the novella a hugely enjoyable experience.

The novel is written in third person from the perspectives of Joseph and Kali. This worked well as we got to experience Europa and Neem with both of them.

If you love science fiction then I definitely recommend this. If you're looking to start reading the genre then Newer will be a great place to start

I love the cover on this book, it's so pretty. And as its a short read at only 147 pages, it's the perfect size to slip in a handbag and read on the go. The only thing I did find is that the white text on the back cover was really hard to read, although I think black would have been too harsh.

I really enjoyed this book. There was a lot packed in, the world building was solid and really well done for such a short book. I instantly liked both Joseph and Kali, they'd obviously both lost so much and I just wanted to reach into the book and hug them.

Robyn's writing was just perfect. Not too simple, or too 'flowery'. It flows wonderfully and I found this to be a very easy read.

I thought the plot was unique and engaging, I always find other people's thoughts on how the future could look both fascinating and terrifying.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella, and will definitely be recommending it.

Thank you to the author and Love Books Tours for my copy of this book.

Firstly, I am an absolute sucker for robots, droids, and any other sentient or semi-sentient mechanical beings, and Neem22 is no exception. Within about half a sentence, I loved him. I also really enjoyed his attitude and behaviour towards the prison where he worked - it was an interesting social commentary, which I think sci-fi can be so good at achieving.

Joseph and Kali were both great characters to follow, with very different backgrounds and approaches to life on Europa. I could have very easily followed Joseph for a whole novel, though the punch that this story packed in novella form was phenomenal.

And then the ending. I haven't actually cried at a book in quite a while, but Newer left me sobbing. I didn't see it coming. It was brilliant.

Being a huge Sci-fi fan, I was very much looking forward to this read, and let me tell you, it certainly did not disappoint.

Considering this Is a novella, at just under 160 pages, I must say, quite the story is packed into those pages.

In this distant future, humanity has travelled throughout the solar system, poisoning planet after planet. But work is being done to try and fix the damage done.

Fully sentinent Artificial Intelligence is a reality, and robot kind are on the verge of putting a long planned sceme into operation.

So all in all, a great little read. The world building and character development, although compacted down In order to suit the novella style, you still get a great sense of place and time, and fairly in depth characters.

🚀 This novella blends sci-fi and something a bit magical. Joseph, looking for a second chance in prison, and Kali, adjusting to life after a huge loss, both find themselves guided by Neem22, a bot with more going on than meets the eye. 🤖✨

The story is about forging strong relationships, learning understanding and dealing with big changes. It also makes you think about robots, their choices, and the future of tech. 🤔

I particularly enjoyed the worldbuilding. I was able to visualise the clinically clean Europa, which provided a great backdrop for the characters to interact. 🚀

It’s a testimony to the Robyn Abbott's skills as to how she was able to write about such thought-provoking, complex subject matter, craft a new world and create believable characters in a novella of this size. 🌟

This book says a lot about humanity and what our future with AI may be. An enjoyable read!

"No one wants to cry," said Joseph.
"That is not entirely true, Mr. Lockmore."

Newer explores a world where bots and humans can live together by understanding one another. This planet is called Europa it is solar powered, plastic free and humans live in homes that are more like communes. Kali has lost her parents so she has the opportunity to go to Europa with her uncle, Jace. That is where Kali ends up meeting a bot named Neem 22, they become fast friends. Neem works at a prison as a therapist. One of his patients is the other MC in the novella, his name is Joseph. Joseph often is in his own head questioning things and calling himself "not smart". Neem is trying to help me see this is not the case.
Because it is a novella it really is an introduction to these three characters.
It is a great book for sci-fi fans

🤖 The Future Is Here… But Who’s Really in Control? 🚀

There’s something about sci-fi that’s always drawn me in. Maybe it’s growing up with Star Wars and Star Trek, or maybe it’s my fascination with stories that explore the ‘what ifs’ of the future. So when Newer by Robyn Abbott landed in my hands, I was more than ready to dive in—and it didn’t disappoint.

For a novella, this one packs a lot in. The world feels fully fleshed out, giving a real sense of a future where humanity is trying to undo its mistakes while AI is… well, re-evaluating its role in all of it. The character development was surprisingly deep for such a short read—I didn’t expect to connect with them as much as I did, but I found myself really invested in their stories.

Newer also raises some really interesting questions about AI, humanity, and where we might be heading. In a time where AI is developing faster than ever, it makes you stop and think about what ‘progress’ actually means. Neem22’s perspective was especially fascinating, and I love it when a book makes me reflect long after I’ve turned the last page.

If you love sci-fi and enjoy stories that are both thought-provoking and immersive, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a go. It’s a quick read but one that leaves a lasting impression.

I received an early copy of this book to read and review and this is my honest opinion.

Thank you to Robyn Abbott & Love Book Tours, for the gifted copy 📖

Newer is a sci-fi novella set on Europa, and it follows two characters, Joseph and Kali, as they befriend a bot called Neem 22.

Neem supports Joseph during his imprisonment (he was imprisoned after being caught trying to illegally enter Europa), and grows close to Kali, whose parents died recently, helping her to grow accustomed to life on Europa vs Earth.

I loved the dual POV and especially thought Kali’s bot arm was really interesting-I won’t spoil anything but it really adds some intriguing things to the plot down the line!

The ending was beautifully wrapped up and I’d like to read more set in this universe, especially to see how Joseph and Kali get on in their future lives.

An excellent sci-fi read, and nice and short too!

This is a new genre to me (sci-fi), and one that I now know will continue to enjoy! Newer is a short novella but has such an impact. Earth isn't what we know, and humans live along bots. We are introduced to 2 very different characters whose lives intertwine with the same bot who ultimately is planning their futures. The story is fast-paced and tells a story of grief and friendships. One thing that resonated with me is how their was a 'village' to support a new mother, as a mother of young children, I find myself in a situation where there isn't a village of support and I wish we still had that type of society so mothers didn't feel so isolated.

The ending was great, not as I thought it was going to end. I would love to see a second book to see what happens next!

ewer by Robyn Abbott 🤖 Review 💭 Newer is a short scifi novella where humans co-exist with robots and are able to travel to different planets other than earth. The writing, description, stories between the three main characters Joseph, Kalli and Neem22 were interesting and well written. I was in awe with each of the characters story and felt a connection to them. I enjoyed Neem22 especially in his role working at the prison where he met Joseph. It is until the two characters connect in the story with Neem22 being a part of their trauma and self exploration in life. The ending definitely had me unexpectedly emotional. I really enjoyed and loved this short Scifi Novella! In the end, it had me thinking of a world with AI, Robots ect. I definitely recommend for those into Scifi and Robots.

I thought this was a really interesting novella that really touches on AI, bots, robots, etc. This is a story that is going to make you think about bots and humans and how do we work together? Personally the idea of AI or robots always seemed something that was in the future, but the reality is that it’s here whether we are ready for it or not.

If a bot has the ability for consciousness thought, where is the line between humanity and machine? While this story takes place in the future, there are some moments that will feel very relevant. Even if you haven’t read Sci-fi before, I would definitely give this a read.

This book was so good.
The book followed 3 main characters Joseph, Kalli, and Neem. With Neem being the one who connects the characters together. This was an easy sci-fi book to read and follow but was thought-provoking.

The story had me hooked. The characters were all different but very likeable but not necessarily relatable because of their different backgrounds and circumstances.

I definitely didn't see the ending coming and would have definitely been happy to read more if the book was longer.

This book was an easy read that I feel could be a good introduction to reading sci-fi books. It is the first I have read from this author, but it definitely won't be the last.

Thank you to Love Books Tours and the author for the free book.

Newer reminded me of The Wild Robot; where robots/bots start to adapt and become more and more humanistic and emotional.

While this is a novella, it felt like a full story. And although it alternates between two different main characters, and you’re not sure how they are initially related, it all comes full circle and soon makes total sense.

Naturally, my favorite character was Neem 22. Who doesn’t love a bot that is kind of a rebel? He’s irresistible.

Overall, Newer was a quick, interesting read and I’d happily read more from this author.

The first time I read this I wasn't really in the mood for a sci-fi and I didn't think I was going to enjoy it.

I decided to try it again (thankfully!) and read it within a few hours! 🤖🤯🌌

I actually loved it so much. A short but thought provoking story set in the future where bots have taken most of our jobs (Very poignant timing if you're up to date with current AI developments).

It's a dual POV following Jensen and Kalli, they're both brilliant characters with stories full of emotional healing and trauma.

It is a really short read at only 140 pages so I really recommend it if you're looking for a thought provoking sci-fi which will likely make you cry!

Newer is a science fiction novella that follows humans Joseph and Kali as they find themselves far from Earth on Europa. We also get to meet a friendly bot called Neem22.

I have never been big on science fiction novels but have started getting more into them recently and found this to be an easy read.

I like how it gets you thinking about AI especially as it is quite the hot topic at the minute.

The world building in this novella was also really good - quite the feat in a novella!
