The sun touches the horizon… A hush before the storm… The sun set as it had every other day. Then night fell and the world ended. For many, it was a long, slow, lingering death. For others, it came quickly, full of terror and agony. Few survived. The ones that did watched the setting sun with a rising panic. Out of the ashes of humankind’s demise rose the night runners. They were death loping down darkened streets, their shrieks echoing off empty buildings. Untold Stories is a series of short stories depicting the experiences of some who faced the fall of civilization as we know it. A scream in the night… And terror poured forth…
John O'Brien is a former Air Force fighter instructor pilot who transitioned to Special Operations for the latter part of his career gathering his campaign ribbon for Desert Storm. Immediately following his military service, John became a firefighter/EMT with a local department. Along with becoming a firefighter, he fell into the Information Technology industry in corporate management. Currently, John is writing full-time.
As a former marathon runner, John lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and can now be found kayaking out in the waters of Puget Sound, mountain biking in the Capital Forest, hiking in the Olympic Peninsula, or pedaling his road bike along the many scenic roads.
Just finished it and hate it when John O'Brien's books end! I am always wanting more of these books! I loved the way this book tells the story of things mentioned in his previous books, and how it raises more questions! I won't spoil anything but really am curious as to how and if he will put it all together in his new book! Keep up the good work Mr. O'Brien!
**First off, I feel I need to add a disclaimer to this review. I wrote one of the fan fiction pieces added to the book, so I am only going to address the stories written by John O'Brien. I receive no compensation from the sales of this book, so I write this review free from any monetary motivation.**
This is a companion book to Mr. O'Brien's A New World series. It is filled with short stories based on events that happened in the series. It's like stepping back from the perspective of the main characters in the series to see what else was happening in the world during that time. The characters in the short stories are just average people, facing the onset and/or aftermath of the apocalypse. I like how O'Brien spins many of the stories into scenes readers of his series might recognize.
It is completely possible to read this book without having read any of the books in the series. New readers won't be confused as each short story is its own entity. As a fan of the series, however, I thought it was fun being able to identify how the story connected to something from the books.
John O'Brien also did a great job keeping each of the stories unique. I admit I liked some of the stories more than others, which is a good thing... what I prefer may not be what another reader prefers. Like my title says, there's something for everyone in A New World: Untold Stories. Thank you, Mr. O'Brien! Keep up the excellent work!!
I was sceptical before reading this book. Fan fiction usually blows, but in this case a good number of the short stories in this sideways glance at the main story really works.
We get to meet people who didn't make it, and people who made it, and almost met "our heroes" while fighting to survive.
What really disappointed me in this book was strangely enough John O'Briens own short stories. The stories are great, the writing tight and exciting as usual. But he falls into the trap of over-explaining. At the end of each story he connects the dots for us, instead of leaving the story hangig and up to the reader to decide - which is the point of a short story to me.
Like a small new world Fox before the next big book comes around. it just bad that I speed read through it lol. Wondering if some of the characters will eventually meet in the full series. keep it up and keep em coming!
I can see so many different angles you could write about from this series. I always check the site for a new book from you, so it's on to book two. Are you out there in the sound without a paddle? Get back to writing
