Mutual Obsession

Rate this book
They were best friends—until love tore them apart.

Jacob is ready to rule Blackthorn, but sobriety isn’t his only battle. His family demands he take a wife and produce an heir, yet his heart has never forgotten the best friend he hurt—Miles. The boy he once pushed away. The man who now looks at him with nothing but cold indifference.

Miles buried his heartbreak years ago. First, Jacob shattered him. Then Indie vanished after a summer of stolen nights, hidden secrets, and falling hopelessly in love. It was never meant to last—she’s always running. But now she’s back, desperate for his help to destroy the demons she’s been fleeing from for years. Too bad he’s too angry to care.

Now, the two people who broke him most are together. But when they make a shocking proposition—that they only want each other if they can have him too—Miles is forced to face the truth he’s spent years denying.

Desire still burns, tangled with pain, betrayal, and secrets that could destroy them all. As old wounds resurface and new threats close in, will they risk it all for an unconventional love that was always meant to be?

AUTHOR NOTE
Mutual Obsession is a dark, sinful MMF mafia romance packed with forbidden passion, second chances, and an obsession too strong to resist. It is book two in the Rivals of Blackthorn series, and while it's an interconnected standalone with a HEA that can be read on its own, if you do want to read the series, it's recommended you start with book one, Prized Possession. Includes MM, spicy scenes, and dark themes; check content warnings.

The Rivals of Blackthorn Series is set in Emma Luna's Beautifully Brutal World, and whilst you don't have to read the books in the Beautifully Brutal series before reading the Rivals of Blackthorn, there are characters that crossover, and it may contain minor spoilers. If you'd like to read in order, start with Black Wedding in The Beautifully Brutal Series first.

First of all, thank you Emma Luna for this ARC and the absolute patience and understanding for my personal/family circumstances. Even if this got me booted from the arc-list, I’m okay with it.

Mutual Obsession was a solid 4 ⭐️read for me. It’s no secret that I enjoy Emma’s books and one thing she does well is conveying emotions. It's written in a way your body has to respond to the words written on the page. The yearning, the anger, the longing and the sadness, making your stomach twist, turn and tingle with the want for these characters to finally come see eye to eye.

Though it’s there where the first personal preference came in where I would’ve loved to see Jake and Indie grovel more and harder to gain back Miles’s trust and love.

Miles
He still seems to struggle with his own feelings. At first thinking he was the problem between him and Jacob. Due to this it seems like he’s conflicted, unsure and unable to voice his needs to Jacob and Indie. The way Miles lashes out is not for the faint hearted, calling Indie a whore was uncalled for and something he could’ve groveled for way more than the slap on the wrist he was given for it. Miles seemed to be projecting a lot, doing in a way he knows best, through anger. Miles’s mother will definitely not take home mother of the year for sure. Offering up her daughter for a ludicrously amount of money. It shouldn’t even have been on her mind, but then again, the mind of an addict works in wondrous ways that never benefits anyone around them.

Jake
As the story progresses it seems that Jake is the biggest problem between him and Miles. His character driven by what others think and letting his insecurities lead the way and dictate how he should live his life. Apart from his sister Chloe, his family is downright horrible and I have no nice words to say about them at all.

Indie
She was a mystery I wanted to know more about, but as soon as all bets were off she turned into a soft marshmallow that I grew to love yet dislike. I would’ve loved for her to have had her revenge. She was the one seeking out help after all. Toward the end I was missing some of the backbone that Indie had started with.

Why choose romances are incredibly difficult to write, there’s many dynamics you have to take into account and knowing this is Emma Luna’s first attempt at it deserves an applause. However, I did find myself sometimes wondering if she struggled through her writing at times as it read that way and fell flat here and there through the middle part ending in quite a few plot filling spicy scenes.

The dialogue and the promises they have with each other, especially Jacob and Miles, are sometimes/most of the time too perfect. I would’ve loved a sliver of morally grey, just a tinge of breaking important promises that seem minor, it would’ve made the in-between parts more meaningful and given those moments some action as the story sometimes falls flat and seem to be filled with smut.

It was such a lovely surprise to have Bree and Liam make an appearance in this book. I loved this little glimpse into their life and where they’re now.

Personal preference:
- The nicknames for Jake (pretty boy) and Indie (gorgeous girl) were used quite a bit, bordering overkill.
- Miles didn’t convince me as a dominant man, he read too soft and sweet instead of overpowering.
- At times I found myself more interested in side characters than the main characters. (I am very curious to see if Emma will come out with a story for Jenny and Leo. Their dynamic was interesting and they had a certain fire to them that made you want more.)

The smut is what you’d expect when you’re familiar with Emma Luna’s work. If not: it’s dirty, raunchy, filled with feelings and passion. It sucks you right in and makes you feel all the feelings, leaving you feeling like an intruder during their intimate time.

“The sweet smile on her lips is so contradictory to the naughty position she’s in.” - absolutely beautifully written. Really giving you a small insight in Jacob’s observation of the unknown threeway dynamic to him.

Overall this was a great story, one you’d expect from Emma, being filled with all the familiarities she sprinkles in her books. Definitely would recommend if you’d like to start with a dark why choose novel.

Mutual obsession is such an amazing read! With its compelling storyline and likable characters, I found myself fully immersed within the pages of this book. This novel is a big book so be sure to set aside a sufficient chunk of time because once you start reading, you won't want to stop until you've devoured every last page!

This unconventional love story features Miles, Jacob, and Indie. Jacob’s and Indie’s lives have intersected with Miles’ at different times - all during critical moments that have left each of them emotionally scarred. During a desperate time of fear and danger, Indie returns to the one person she knows can help her - Miles. Jacob Santoro is one of the Blackthorn heirs and as such is impacted by the pressures that come with carrying this mafia mantle. In battling his own demons, he ended up destroying one of the best things in his life - Miles. Years have passed and yet none of them have moved on. All three of them wonder, with second chances, can they recover from past hurts and be open to healing and love again?

Indie, Miles, and Jacob are complex characters and their many layers are what make them not only intriguing, but also so lovable. Each with their own heartbreaking backstory, it is impossible not to admire their inner strength, all while accepting their flaws. This author excels at character development, and I marvel in how the dynamic between all three of them evolves throughout the story.

I love how fiercely independent and brave Indie was as well as enjoyed that protective nature that both men possessed. With combustible chemistry, they are perfect together. In addition to navigating their triad relationship, there is that element of danger that lended itself to suspenseful and intriguing moments. All wonderful things that I have come to expect with this author.

While Mutual Obsession is the second book in the Rivals of Blackthorn series, it can be read as a standalone. This dark mafia romance is a definite must read for those who enjoy intricate storylines, lots of steam, action, and most of all… second chances and love.

Hot damn this was good. My girl Indie was out there living my relationship goals. Who doesn't want a boyfriend with a boyfriend who is also your boyfriend? I've read a lot of dark mafia romance, and this one blew me away. I initially wanted Miles to heed the red flags of giving another chance to those who broke his heart all those years ago, but I am so glad he opted to anyways. Indie and Jacob won me over, and I fell in love with them just as much as I did Miles. I jumped into the series with book two and have not yet read the other books set in this world. I had no issues following along, and I will definitely be reading those books after getting to know those characters in this. I definitely sacrificed sleep needing to know what happened next one more than one night reading this. And the spice was most definitely spicing. Highly recommend. I can't wait to read everything in this series.

Emma Luna is just so great at writing dark romances! This one was so good in my opinion!

Mutual Obsession is a dark MMF, mafia romance that really surprised me in the best way! This book was filled with spice, likable characters, and a lot of angst that will have you flipping to the next page. There is a lot of history between these three main characters. I was so captured by the story and didn’t know what was gonna come next. I really enjoyed this read by Emma Luna!

I’m so excited for more to come from Emma Luna. I will read basically any book she writes. I definitely recommend this book for others.

While Mutual Obsession is the second book in the Rivals of Blackthorn series, it can be read as a standalone. This is a new author to me but will definitely not be the last.

This story has heartbreak, secrets, second chances, as well as forgiveness and redemption and the same time mystery and of cours mafia.

When Indie returns we got a glimpse of what happened in the past, between all 3 of them. (indie, miles and Jacob.) These three find their way back to each other navigate through some tough challenges to get their happy ending

Hi.

I have thoughts on this one and they're mostly not positive (Don't worry, I'll start with the positive. A dear friend of mine said since I'm too harsh, starting with positive softens the blow... if i remember to actually)

Bi guy here with strong opinions since my community is represented here (well... sorta kinda... specially since it's an MF romance author's first ever queer romance)

I have adhd on top of having English as my second language, so you can absolutely expect horrible grammar moments, weird phrases cause they're probably translated from my first language, poor spelling cause my brain is faster than my hands, missing words or even extra words that have no business to be there (again, cause my brain is faster than my hands).

Oh and I'm too lazy to edit, but i will edit if you didn't understand me and kindly (or harshly) pointed it out.

So now that I've said all of that, let me get into it.

__________

A brief summary:

We have indie, miles and jacob (jake) as our main characters.

Jacob is a mafia boss.
Miles is a bodyguard.
And indie is indie (can't exactly remember what she did, cause she barely did it but she works close to miles in a club or something from that line)

We also have marcus and chloe, courtney and maximus, bree and liam and a whole lof of other people from their books. The only important ones here are Marcus (who is another mafia boss and kinda like a business partner to jake) and bree (another mafia boss).

Jacob and miles had a thing going on when they were teenagers, but due to homophobia (both internalised and regular) and pressure from his parents, jacob rejects miles and breaks his heart (and by proxy, his own). Side note: they were not together together but they were kinda together... not officially.

Miles moves on (well, sorta kinda) and meets indie. He falls in love again but indie just gets up and leaves him with no explanation, basically ghosting him in the process. They were actually together this time.

Miles works for marcus as his bodyguard.
Indie comes back after 7 years of ghosting miles cause she's in danger. Somehow jacob seas her and immediately is charmed by her and decides to save her, and he has to do it with miles.

Miles's reaction to her return is not kind. So jacob tries to help her and later miles agrees to do the same. Later they ask bree and her clan to help and boom. Dark romance.

Somehow they end up falling in love.

Without spoiling a whole lot about the plot and storyline, it involves child traficking and abuse of minors. So please be aware of that going into this.

________

What i thought about certain things:

Writing:

Let me start with the positive, the author writes good sex scenes. She can write sexual tension before the act, she can write a good build up and she can write the act itself very smoothly and i love her dirty mind for being very liberal with her words. But it ends here.

Now to the negatives:

Without trying to be mean, I'd say the writing in genral was below the average.
It wasn't smooth for storytelling, sprcially for a book this long.

The characters mostly sounded the same (there is a flashback where courtney, miles's sister has a very long conversation with miles about her life with their mom and she talks exactly how miles, jacob, marcus, chloe and indie talk... and she is 12.. She sounds exactly like grown people.. mind you those grown people don't have distinct sounds themselves) and it was hard to tell them apart sometimes.

It's also somehow super dramatic in a very underwhelming way (always crying, always tearing up, random bursts of emotions, random crash outs, unnecessary name callings, very cartoonish villain talks and hero talks, etc).

The author also has some very juvenile empowering moments for indie which were quite... too much and borderline cringe. (I shared everything with some of my girl friends and gave the context and let them read those parts after... they agreed with my assessment).

"He's dismissed me as a threat, and that makes me so fucking angry. I don't even think; cast one final glance at Gregg, letting him know he no longer has any control over me, and then I turn and run, never looking back."

Like girl.. how do you let someone know "he no longer has any control over me" with your eyes???? Just ridiculous.

Main characters:

Indie:

This girl pissed me off from the moment she appeared, i was so mad at her entitlement and "woe is me" act that i had a hard time feeling bad for her.

I'm gonna spoil the relationship between her and miles here cause I'm still mad.

She approached him in a bar, they get tangled together and start a relationship, a full on relationship. They both fall in love but her past caughts up with her and she leaves. No notes, no explanation, no I'm sorrys, nothing. Puff, indie's not here.

7 years later she comes back (by doing a little stalking to with miles in mind specifically) and EXPECTS miles to help her, no apologies, no explanation, nothing, just asking for help and expecting it

And when he doesn't doesn't oblige... he's the asshole in the situation.

“I hoped it would go better than this,” she says with a chuckle that I match. “I knew that my leaving would hurt him, but I never expected him to be like this. He’s not the Miles I remember...the boy I loved.”

By "be like this" she means she didn't think miles would be expecting an explanation instead of just saying yes to anything ole girl says.

Like miss mamas... how delusional and entitled you gotta be? He doesn't owe you anything... ANYTHING.

Then throughout the first 250 pages miss girl is villanising miles for not helping her and she keeps saying loving miles has hurt her.. like bffr. You're a victim sure, but not in this situation.

Not once she SINCERELY apologised during this whole fiasco... just crying and crying and crying.

Her first 5 scenes.. is just her crying for no reason.. like get yourself together girl. (To be clear, i know characters are allowed to be emotional, but be serious, i hate when people cry over the situation they created themselves. Get. It. Together) and she cries in every other scene too.. like damn girl, give those tear glands some rest, they are really overworked.

She once said "sorry i never meant to hurt you" in the first confrontation with miles... not sorry "I" hurt you, but sorry you got hurt in the process cause it wasn't my intention. Like YOU still hurt the guy???

I hate characters who avoid accountability and miss indie dodges that shit like it's dodgeball.

Her and jacob are also shitty people for dating each other when they both knew they had a history with miles. (Yes, indie didn't know it was romantic between miles and jacob, but she knew they had a history and she still chose to date him... and jacob knew miles loved indie and still dated her, selfish.. shitty, shitty people)

She later apologises when they are already a throuple. Like no baby girl, you don't have to, it was actually miles's fault. (I'm being sarcastic, of course)

Oh and another quote from the queen herself.
(Jake holds his hand out, as if to calm him down, but before Jake can say anything, I address Miles. "You're asking me to talk about something I've kept hidden for almost ten years.
Something that puts my life in danger every fucking day, so I'm sorry if I'm finding it hard. If I tell you my story, it will place you both in harm's way, and I'm
not sure can be responsible for that.")

So you don't wanna put them in harms way but you still want miles to help you and protect you from the danger that's been following you everywhere (aka him putting himself in harms way anyway).. so which is it queen?

Other than crying, dodging accountability, being a professional victim in situations she created herself and having the blandest personality ever (actually the second blandest personality... mia from "torn and bound duet" by k webster still holds that title), she's actually a DV survivor and i applaud her for that. She gets her happily ever after with her men.

Jacob:

My second least favorite one.

He had a ONS with miles in prom, pushed him away and turned into drugs.
Miles and his folks get him into rehab.
Miles then agrees to be his sober companion (cause he still loves jake) and attends his sessions with him.

Miles misses one of the sessions after jake took indie on a date and has been spending time with her... and jacob is angry at him for it (I'm not sure if i should blame miles or not, cause well, that role is important but my god i hated jake and indie for doing it)

But even after miles apologises for missing the session, this idiot says it's not enough. Like wtf else you want, asshole?
I wanted to pluck his eyes lashes with a nail clipper.

He knows what he put miles through back then (he literally admits it in his own inner monologues and also out loud) and what he's putting him through now. Yet he has the audacity to be mad at him. Praying for self reflection and lowering of that audacity.

Before he asks indie on a date, he consoles her... cause miss girl is crying (her usual past time hobby) after miles corners her and asks her for an explanation (rightfully so), yet jake follows her after getting mad at miles for making her upset (he didn't do enough for me actually)

She gives him some very, very vague explanation and he decides he needs to save the girl he met 2 days ago cause well.. she's hot, he's jealous miles loved someone other than him and he has a hero complex. (Makes sense, right?)

"Miles is not the only one who can help you"
Then proceeds to tell her about how he's a mafia boss and all of that jazz.

Mind you mafias are operating anonymously and in the dark.

Yet He's just passes around information like it's candy.

He then corners miles, kisses him (after a decade of heartbreak, mind you) and coerces him into hearing indie out. Mind you, that woman has hurt miles to the point of not moving on and jacob knows it... and he himself is doing everything for indie, not because he wants miles.

He's also big on alpha posturing...

Indie was telling them about her life story and how she survived an abusive relationship... and all this bitch did was just to growl and huff and puff and saying "I'll kill them all"

Like sit your ass down.. let her talk... just annoying me and miles for no reason.

Him being like this was the moment i knew i wasn't the target audience for this book despite being represented in it (bi guys). Cause that shit is not hot or swoon worthy, it's just disrespectful and cringe.

He has some tiny development in the second half and acts less like an idiot and actually apologises as well.

Still didn't like him.

Miles:

Everyone has hurt him. His mom, jacob and then indie...

Man has the backbone of a jellyfish when it comes to these two and i fucking hated him for it.

Get up, stand up, they're not worth it.

He was literally forced into hearing her out and just accepted his fate..

I was on his side, till he had that cringe-misogynistic lines when he saw jacob and indie getting together to go on a date and called indie a whore for no goddamn reason.

Then i was just side-eyeing him. Cause as much as i don't like indie, that was totally uncalled for.

All and all, these 3 were pretty much one note and a little one dimensional (we get their background, they just don't have a lot of development).

__________

The relationships and the dynamics:

Relationships:

Indie and miles:

Very forced.. very, very forced. He is mad at her, then she says "I'm in danger and see? I came back so you can save me"... and he suddenly isn't mad anymore.. what?

I'll be forever salty at how easily she got off the hook. Fucking asshole.

Bffr.

Chemistry just isn't there.
The connection isn't there.
It was just like when we were kids playing dolls and pushing our doll's faces together to make them "kiss" and doll's faces were just looking like 😃, getting their faces smashed together... NO.

Every emotional interaction between them was just making me mad.

Indie and jacob:

They had decent chemistry.
Decent connection.
But my god, i hated them for the first half. They are not good people. (Duh, it's dark romance.. but still, they should be decent to their partners and they were just decent to each other).

Selfish and insufferable.

But in the second half, their connection grew on me a bit.

Miles and Jacob:

Very good chemistry and connection.
Yet they both always center indie. *sigh* and i was tired of it.

Anyways, i expected more emotionally charged moments between them (considering their past). But most of those were with indie.
Beggers can't be choosers i guess..

The throuple:

Before i start i want to say how ridiculously they got the idea to get into a throuple...

Indie and jacob went on a date to the zoo and saw poly lemurs and decided to lure miles into a throuple... and it actually worked.

I don't see them being stable, miles is the only one who can actually say what he feels. And most of their hard talks are initiated by him.

Intimately? They work super well, but emotionally? Good luck with that, the base is not stable enough.

The dynamics:

So, i have mixed feelings here.

The author was respectful enough to give everyone enough 1on1 time with each other and i fucking love her for that.

but somehow she managed to center indie in the dynamic.

Everytime the 3 are together, she's the center... she's in between...
Like if they want to cuddle, she's the first pick for both guys, instead of each other.
If they're sleeping, she's always in the middle.
If they're walking, she's always in the middle.
When the guys have 1on1 sex she always has to be mentioned at least once.
I don't know if it was intentional or not but it's irritating to me cause it ruins the balance.
Like what is it with MF authors and writing FMC ceteric queer books with bi men? Like why bi men always center the girl and make their bisexuality about her?
I'm over it atp.

Also we don't actually have a truly MMF scene, it's either MFM with indie getting dicked through every hole... or one of the guys giving his ass up to the other one with indie rubbing one out in the corner.
And it's quite hilarious actually.

Plot:

Absolutely hated the first half where they "get miles to love them again" cause they didn't.. they forced him and he just accepted his fate.

But the second half was a really good improvement.

I liked this part, it's overplayed but i love it.
Bad guys got what they deserved and the heroes got their HEA.
I don't wanna spoil it but the boys really came through for their girl here.

I could do it without the corny lines like "you can't hurt indie anymore, she don't have to be affraid" before killing the dude but sure, come through kings.

Also something that really bugged me.
It was the relationship between courtney (miles's little sister) and maximus (Marcus's dad).

We first met courtney when she was 12. Maximus helps miles to save her (from having her virginity sold to teh highest bidder by her junkie mom) and he sleeps with her 6 years later when miles and marcus put her in his house for safety.

Marcus, miles and jacob are all 28.
If the dude was 18 when he had marcus, he'd be 46. But since miles said "he's old enough to be her grandfather" I'm guessing he's in his 50s.

Which is a very concerning situation here.. but hey, who am i to judge a man in his 50s sleeping with a barely legal teenager who is seeking asylum in his house, right? She also says it started as fun.. which.. girl..

__________

Overall verdict:

Wasn't for me. I wish i could dnf books when they annoy me from the first chapter but I'm like a dog with a bone when i start a book, i have to finish it.

If you enjoy big emotions for no reason, dramatic lines when they're not necessarily, people avoiding accountability, FMC centering romance books despite having queer relationships (like yaaaaas, go heteros), detailed sex scenes, abusers getting what they deserve and an epilogue that isn't about the main throuple, This book is for you.

I really wanted to give the book 1 star after the first half, but i forced myself to read the second half and I'm glad i did.

It's a solid 2.5/5, but since it's goodreads and 0.5 is not an option and It's more lenient towards 2 rather than three, I'll give it a 2/5.

"Mutual Obsession" is a compelling dark mafia romance that will sweep you off your feet and into a world where love and danger intertwine.

Emma Luna has masterfully crafted a gripping story that delves into complex relationships, emotional burdens, and the shadows of betrayal as characters strive for redemption amid their chaotic lives.

The story centers around Jacob, a man grappling with the weight of familial expectations as he prepares to inherit the notorious Blackthorn empire. His journey is intricately tied to Miles, his former best friend who bears scars from their tumultuous past. The relationship between Jacob and Miles is fraught with tension, desire, and unresolved feelings, expertly showcasing the passionate yet destructive nature of their bond. Jacob’s world is structured around loyalty and ambition, but it is challenged by the fierce emotions he feels for Miles.

Miles is a complex character, haunted by heartbreak and regret from their shared history. You can feel his struggles as he navigates the remnants of his love for Jacob while dealing with betrayal and the fear of vulnerability. His fierce protectiveness and anger add layers to his character, making him relatable yet enigmatic.

The introduction of Indie, the female lead who shares a deep connection with both men, adds another layer of intensity. Her character serves as a catalyst for the unfolding drama, bringing unresolved feelings to the surface. Indie’s return to Jacob and Miles' lives is a turning point that complicates their already volatile dynamics, forcing each of them to confront their pasts and question their desires. The author does an excellent job of portraying Indie’s tumultuous emotions, balancing her fierce independence with her longing for acceptance and love.

The story is both evocative and immersive, painting vivid pictures of the setting and the characters' internal struggles. The dark mafia backdrop serves as a thrilling environment, but also as a reminds us about the constraints and pressures the characters face in their relationships. (It’s not acceptable to be seen as anything other than “normal”!) The stakes are incredibly high, and the threat of external enemies looms over the trio, heightening the urgency of their emotional confrontations.

Throughout the story, themes of loyalty, betrayal, and second chances resonate deeply. The tension between desire and regret is a driving force, creating moments where love nearly falters under the weight of past mistakes. The exploration of an unconventional MMF relationship challenges societal norms in this world.

Can they really all be together?

The author expertly balances these darker themes with intense passion, making the romantic scenes both electrifying and meaningful. The emotional connection between Jacob, Miles, and Indie feels real and raw, the complexities of attraction and the struggles faced in pursuit of happiness is all too real (there were moments I held my breath for them, then throwing my kindness down as they balked at taking that final step!)

It’s a dance of love that is equally intoxicating and heartbreaking.

As the plot unfolds, i found myself enthralled by the twisting paths of fate and the revelations that threaten to fracture the trio’s bond. A Web of secrets unravels, showcasing how easily the things they hold most dear can be dismantled by betrayal. The tension builds to a thrilling climax that left me breathless, and questioning what sacrifices will be made in the name of love.

The book is a must read for fans of mafia romances and those who crave stories filled with emotional depth, intense passion, and complex relationships. With its blend of forbidden love, dark undertones, and unforgettable characters, "Mutual Obsession" will leave you craving more long after you turn the last page.

This is going to be a book I’ll be coming back to time and again.

It’s also the first book I’ve read by this author. I’m going back to rediscover what else she has written. I’m hooked 😃

Great dark mafia MMF romance with tropes like second chance, bi-awakening, forced proximity, hidden identity, and friends to enemies to lovers dynamic with lots of spice and power exchange (D/s dynamics)

Second book in the Rivals of Blackthorn series, focuses on Jacob, Miles and Indie. Jacob and Miles were side characters in the first book, Prized Possession, and I loved learning more about them. It was also nice to see some other familiar characters from the first book.

I really enjoyed the relationship development between the characters. The flashbacks to different characters’ pasts helped to explain why they made certain decisions and also gave backstory to their previous relationships and friendships.

I liked how protective both Jacob and Miles were of Indie. The chemistry between these three was amazing. The spice was spicing and I really liked the power exchange and praise.

Like in the first book, the writing style in this one also made me feel like I was in the middle of the action with the characters. The multi-POV storytelling worked well for the plot, and I always enjoy getting different characters’ perspectives. The plot kept me hooked and I didn’t want to put this book down.

“Sometimes pretending you don’t feel anything is easier than admitting you love someone you shouldn’t.”
“When you give someone your heart, they have the power to hurt you more than anyone else. I just never thought he’d break mine the way he has.”
“What do you wear when you’re meeting the guy whose heart you once broke, and the man you’re currently seeing, for coffee?”
“What the hell? Did you just call him Sir?”
“I love seeing you coated in the blood of our enemies. It makes me want to devour you.”

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

I loved the concept of this book after getting hints about Jake in the first book - Prized Possession. Jake is a mafia heir and preparing to take over his fathers ruling. Miles, is the body guard to Jake’s friend and fellow mafia ruler, Marcus. Then we have Indie, a new worker at a club ruled by Marcus and Jake.

This book gives a deep dive into the traumas of Jake and Miles past along with the mystery surrounding Indie. I did like the plot surrounding Indie, and enjoyed reading about the struggles around the three of them together and individually. That being said though, I found a difficult time with their chemistry. Indie and Miles had their own past and rules of their relationship whereas Miles and Jake were very new and not explored in-depth. So when Jake is eventually added to the mix, and rules were thrust upon Jake with zero explanation into their dynamic and forced on him to comply, it just didn’t sit well with me. I’m usually all for chaotic relationship dynamics or multiples when it comes to books, but you can’t just expect a new person in the group to just know everything and follow “rules” they had no prior knowledge of. I also wish there was more of a power exchange with Miles and Jake, being that Jake is a mafia leader of his own. I felt him being more submissive, doesn’t fit his vibe - but that’s just my opinion. I also wish they could have had scenes where they were just free to be with one another without the rules in place. I got tired of reading of the characters asking for permission, I just wanted them to love freely too. I almost found it just repetitive of the first book.

This in general was a good book, I liked the story line but for me, the romantic aspect didn’t hit right.

600+ pages might sound intimidating, but Emma Luna’s writing makes the story glide effortlessly. This was my first MMF romance, and I’ll be honest, I’ve always avoided the trope. I’m not a fan of “sharing,” and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to connect. But I was wrong.

From the very beginning, I felt the ache between Jacob, Miles, and Indie. Their pain. Their anger. Their longing. These three aren’t just characters; they’re raw, broken souls bound by a past full of betrayal, heartbreak, and unfinished love. Watching them circle each other, pull away, then reach for something they don’t even believe they deserve… it hit me harder than I expected.

The emotional depth in this story is incredible. Emma Luna doesn’t just write steam, though the tension is very much there. She gives us flawed, vulnerable people trying to make sense of their trauma, trying to heal, trying to love again in a world that doesn’t make space for anything unconventional.

The flashbacks are essential — each one peeling back another layer of pain, of hope, of regret. And the themes? Heavy and real: trauma, addiction, homophobia, emotional manipulation… handled with so much care and truth.

This book surprised me. It challenged my preferences and pulled me into a dynamic I didn’t think I’d relate to. But more than anything, it reminded me that love, real love, doesn’t always look the way we expect. Sometimes it’s messy, sometimes it hurts, but when it’s honest… it’s beautiful.

✨ 4.5 stars — and I’ll definitely be going back to book one in the Rivals of Blackthorn series. Because now, I need more.

There is so much packed into this amazing read. It’s a mmf mafia romance about second chances & fighting for the person you love. Straight away you know that the fmc is hiding a deadly secret & the mmcs do everything they can to protect her whilst also falling hard & fast for her.

“𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫. 𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬.”

I really liked how we got glimpses from each of their pasts as they have so much history that connects them together in the present. They overcome so many hurdles to be together & the bi-awakening builds from the mmcs younger years. The book focuses on the 2 mmcs relationship first, with the fmc easily falling in to their dynamic & they become obsessed with her.

“𝐈𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐠, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.”

It starts almost like a love triangle, but a night filled with lots of spice is all it takes to cement their feelings for each other. The first mmf was something else 🥵 the mm & dom/sub scenes were SUPER spicy & in multi pov 🌶️

“𝐚𝐬 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐲𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝’𝐬 𝐜𝐮𝐦 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐦𝐲 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝’𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐲, 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡.”

It ends in a hea 🖤

Mutual Obsession is the second book in the Rivals of Blackthorn series by Emma Luna and it is another fabulous story in this must-read mafia series.

This narrative is Jake, Miles and Indie’s story and it is told using all three characters’ POVs which is perfect for the storyline. I also loved the chapters containing flashbacks that enabled me as a reader to understand their situations better.

This MMF story packs some heat 🔥and I enjoyed witnessing all characters find their place within their relationships. There is no doubt that they were always destined to be together, and it was fabulous to watch each person follow their heart - which is not easy when any relationship faces obstacles from the very start. Miles reveals a dominant and controlling side and although this is hot to witness, I found it a little repetitive. Those of you who follow my reviews will know I am not a fan of repeats. However, the power exchange was welcomed and I loved Indie’s kink. I also thoroughly enjoyed seeing the possessive sides of Jake and Miles in action.

As always, I love when characters from other series crossover into a storyline, especially ones that I absolutely love. If you haven’t as yet read the author’s Beautifully Brutal series, then I’m certain you’ll rectify this once you meet Bree and the Doughtys. I’m certain you’ll be kicking yourself for not reading it sooner.

I highly recommend Mutual Obsession to you to read.

First and foremost, a most heartfelt thank you to Emma Luna for giving me a chance to read Mutual Obsession as an ARC. Having the chance to personally tell you that in RARELONDON2025 was amazing !

I loved Miles, Jacob and Indie's story. They had that second chance yearning and pinning and the tension between them was through the roof. My favourite character was Miles, not only because he was strong on the outside yet so emotionally traumatised by both Indie and Jacob on the inside, so much that he was holding off on giving them a chance at the beginning of the story, but also because he was a through and through Dom. Seeing his dom/sub chemistry with indie and jacob was such a delight ,I almost highlighted every sexy scene in the entire book. Going in the story knowing it had MMF dynamics at play, I wanted to see how the MM scenes would play out and was not disappointed in the least. Miles and Jacob had the most highlights for me in this book, but that was mainly on me because I almost fell in love with Miles.

I would have loved a tiny bit more dangerous situations not gonna lie, but that's mostly a personal preference than the story's fault. I'll definetely be checking out more of the Rivals of Blackthorn series, because come on ? If you jump start a series with book #2 , you HAVE to read the rest of it to see how the rest of the characters find their happy endings right ? RIGHT ?!

Can't wait to start Secret Confession and see Maximus and Courtney's story !

Mutual Obsession is a dark, emotional MMF mafia romance full of forbidden desire, buried heartbreak, and second chances.

Jacob is next in line to take over Blackthorn, battling addiction and the weight of family expectations—especially being forced into marriage. He’s never forgotten Miles, the best friend he once pushed away. Meanwhile, Miles is still haunted by the heartbreak of losing both Jacob and Indie—the woman he shared a secret summer romance with before she vanished. Now she’s back, desperate for help… and bringing everything they’ve all tried to forget crashing back into focus.

I really enjoyed seeing how their pasts shaped them and how much effort they put into healing—not just individually, but together. The emotional tension, the pull between them, and the slow rebuilding of trust gave this story a lot of depth. I especially loved the found-family feel and the way their bond evolved into something real and tender.

My only soft note is that the story dragged a little in places. While I was invested the whole way through, I do think it could’ve been a bit shorter. That said, the characters and their emotional journey made it an enjoyable read!

This is book #2 in the series.

Jacob - Is ready to rule Blackthron, with sobriety and his family demanding he produces an heir are only two of many battles he faces.
He has a secret, and that secret is he has fallen for his best friend Miles. Can their strained relationship get back on track or will Jacobs father turn his head again?

Miles - Has been heartbroken by not one, but two people who he loved the most, Jacob his best friend shattered his heart, the one person who he never thought would push him away. The next is Indie, the girl who got away, the girl who was running to protect not her but the people around her.

But she's back, still on the run but she desperately needs Miles's help, can Miles help protect her from the evil that is hunting her? Can Jacob help bring the lost broken pieces back together again?

This is a beautifully written story, one where we see not one but three broken hearts, can this unconventional threesome love story blossom, without any heartache, without any issues.

This authors characters are loveable. You'll get sucked in by them and want to continue to read more about their trio dynamic relationship.
You feel the love, the past trauma and heartbreak.

If you are looking for a second chance, dark mafia romance with MMF love story then this one is for you!

I've been reading this author's books for a few years now, and she consistently surprises me.
She has a dark and twisted side that I love so freaking much.
Emma Luna will knock you off your feet with just one chapter.
Trust me. She gets me every time.
Mutual Obsession is her latest release, and it's the second book from the Rivals of Blackthorn series.
This book explores the lives of Jacob, Miles, and Indie.
You can guess what this means, right???
These three had been a part of each other's lives for a while until they all parted ways.
Now, they are back in each other's lives, with different goals but with just one constant...their love for each other...
Dayum, this book was brutal, hot, and intense.
Did I say hot?? So so hot.
Like all Mafia stories, this one was dark with lots of secrets, vendetta, and so much more.
How can you truly be yourself if you keep hiding your true feelings and emotions?
Why can't a powerful Mafia boss fall in love?
This book will make you dream, blush, and curse... I know I did.
Amazing Emma, just like I knew it would be.

Enma Luna brings an explosive mix of spice, angst and action in Mutual Obsession. This MMF mafia romance delivers some complex, flawed and real characters. The chemistry is insane but the emotions are intense too. Miles, Jacob and India all have their scars and demons but they are unbreakable together.

🖤dark mafia romance
🖤frenemies to lovers
🖤 second chance
🖤 MMF/ MFM/ MM/ MF

Miles' world has been turned upside down by reappearing of the woman who broke his heart years ago. Not only that, she seems to be dating his best friend who also broke his heart. He is the security head of mafia king and his best friend Marcus..and Jacob is head of the other mafia family ruling Blackthorn. India is in danger. Can Miles forgive her? Can Jacob find HEA with two people who have made home in his heart?

Miles had a rough life and he doesn't come from a wealthy background. He is the brooding and grumpy one and understandably so. He is afraid to get hurt again. India and Jacob both abandoned him at two very crucial points of his life. His pain and anger is serious but he cannot deny that his heart still craves them. Jacob has this playful flirty personality to all. But he has struggled with addiction and other issues whole life and Miles has been his lifeline through it. Homophobia is a very real part of mafia world and he was scared for Miles. Now he is at the helm and India is igniting new hope. India is vulnerable right now but she is so strong. She has been running from a grave danger and she couldn't tell Miles before but now she hopes that Miles has enough power to help her. Jacob was an unexpected blessings. Their chemistry is scorching hot. Miles loves to dominate and Jacob and India love to play that way. The chemistry wasn't enough though. They have to work through their issues and they have to do it together.

I reviewed an early copy voluntarily

This is the second book in this impressive series, and this is an amazing addition.
Jacob is next to rule the Blackthorn empire, but his family demand he marry and produce an heir. Jacob shattered Mile’s heart, and Indie vanished after a summer of stolen nights. Indie is back desperate to destroy the demons of her past, and she needs Mile’s help, but he is too angry to care. Now Jacob and Indie are together, but they offer a proposition, that they can only be together if Miles is there are well.
This is a well written emotional roller coaster, with family, friendships, heartbreak, secrets, betrayal, obsession, tension, an age gap, forced proximity, second chances, revelations, enemies / lovers, forgiveness, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, haunting, twisted, and unpredictable, dark mafia romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

4.5★ — Dark, emotional, and deliciously messy

Mutual Obsession is a dark MMF mafia romance that pulls no punches. It’s got everything I love in second-chance stories: angst, secrets, sizzling chemistry, and broken people trying to find their way back to each other.

Jacob is trying to lead Blackthorn—and stay sober—while still haunted by the best friend he pushed away. Miles is bitter and heartbroken, and Indie? She’s back with a past full of secrets and a plea for help.

Their chemistry is intense, their history messy, and their emotions raw. When the three reunite, sparks fly—but so do old wounds and new dangers. This book delivers forbidden love, mafia tension, and a triad dynamic that works.

🔥 MM + MMF scenes
💔 Emotional damage + redemption
🖤 Dark themes + mafia grit
💋 Second chances that hurt before they heal

Emma Luna is new to me, but I’m hooked on her Beautifully Brutal World. Reading more from this series!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review.

This is the story of Jacob, Miles, and Indie. Years ago Miles and Jacob were an item. They had a great relationship until Jacob pushed him away. After that he met Indie and they had some very hot nights one summer together until she disappeared. Now Jacob is about to take over Blackthron but his family expects him to marry and produce an heir. They have each hurt Miles in different way and themselves in the process. These characters are emotionally scarred. But they all think about the others all the times. No one has gotten over any of it. I loved that we got their backstories. If helped me feel like I knew these characters really well. I loved how this all fell into place with the second chances for everyone. But things are never that simple and this story is fill of twists and turns. I could go on and on about it but I don't want to ruin a thing for anyone. This is a book that you need to read.

“I’ve always loved you. Even when I thought I hated you, I still loved you,”

🖤 Mutual Obsession by Emma Luna 🖤

Mutual Obsession is the second book in the Rivals of Blackthorn series by Emma Luna. This dark mafia romance is full of morally grey men, strong FMCs, action and lots of spice!

I was lucky enough to receive an early copy of this (though I am late to the show posting my review! Apologies Emma!!). This is a fast paced book with some familiar characters from her Beautifully Brutal series.

'We’re going to fight for Miles, to show him that if he trusts us with his heart, we won’t break it again.'

I enjoyed the plot in this book alot, I am very intrigued about The Aristocracy and definitely want to find out more! I found this fast paced and full of spice, definitely not a book to read in public 🪭🥵

“Thank you for slaying my demon for me.”

I loved the multiple POVs, the flashbacks and the different relationship dynamics between the three of them. Who doesn't love a second chance romance?

This is out now and on KU!

Having been introduced to Miles and Jacob in Prized Possession, I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for their story and Emma did not disappoint! With the entrance of Indie, we got even more depth and mystery around what happened in the past. The circumstances that precipitated this story are absolutely heartbreaking, for all three of our MCs. Their journey tackles several sensitive topics that generate so much trauma but opens up the opportunity for so much growth and character development.

Mutual Obsession is an MMF mafia second-chance romance with possessive and protective men that will have you all up in your feels and embodies the truth that there are two sides to every story. The relationship and bedroom dynamic was HOT - the spice was truly spicin’! This is Emma’s first MMF romance, but I surely couldn’t tell. It addressed the very realistic obstacles that a triad relationship would encounter while blending them with a very plausible solution for a happily ever after.

To say I sacrificed my sleep for this book would be an understatement, it had my up well past my normal bed-time, waking up the next morning to have a double shot expresso because I was running on 2 hours sleep trying to deal with my 2 year olds tantrums🤣

I absolutely loved the story between Indy, Miles and Jacob. It had depth, spice and everything I felt was needed for this story. Everything I could have wanted from this book, Emma Luna absolutely delivered 🤩🤩

I started this book not knowing what to expect, as I haven't read book 1 of this series. However, it is an interconnected stand alone series, and I had no trouble whatsoever following it.

The spice was 10/10 perfection 👌🏼
The storyline was 10/10 perfection 👌🏼
The characters, their growth and the growth of their relationships was 10/10 perfection 👌🏼

Long and short of it, this is absolutely 1000% worth reading, I'm about to start the other book of the series because I'm absolutely hooked and obsessed

Getting immersed into an Emma Luna story has to be one of my favourite pass times! The writing style, the character developments, the relationship growth, and of course it wouldn't be an Emma Luna book without being sinfully dark and delicious 🖤🖤

I'm not usually a fan of flashbacks but they are SO needed for this story, it wouldn't have flowed the way it did without them, and we needed them to fully understand the characters and their actions

I loved how possessive Miles and Jacob are of Indie and each other 😈

Their story isn't conventional, it's dark and gritty but with that is a beautiful journey, I hope we see more of these characters in the future 🖤🖤

I just devoured this book. I was so excited to read it with it being a Mafia MMF Ménage and It didn't dissapoint. It was filled with plenty of steam , twists and familiar faces and I loved every second of it. I really loved seeing all three of them finding and owning their HEA's. Miles and Jacob are definitely a little bit grey but love Indie with everything that they are. If you love your guy's ob$€$$!v€ and po$$€$$!v€ with eachother and their woman then you need to read this book. All im going to do now is go and get reacquainted with the beautifully brutal series allover again. Amazing five-star read that I would definitely recommend.

Im reviewing this a bit late as it is out now. However, I received this as an ARC, and I didn't realise it was in my book funnel app until a few days ago. Sorry.
This isn't my first emma luna book I previously read prized possession and I absolutely loved that one so I had high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint you can never go wrong with a mafia romance this was also my first MMF mafia romance
This packed a punch with emotions i cried at indys back story. No one should go through that, and my inability to separate fiction and reality had me actually sobbing in the corner of the room
And that ending was the sweetest thing ever 🩷

Miles had his heartbroken by two people, first Jacob Santoro, the other Blackthorn heir, when they were in high school. Indie when she up and ghosted him at time when he needed her the most. When years later, she shows up looking for him, it is like opening the wound again, Miles is awful to her. Jacob and Indie start getting close, this drives Miles to even more anger. The pair conclude that if she is required to choose, she will walk away from both of them.

This is an emotional rollercoaster ride not just for Miles but Jacob and Indie. This was a very spicy read, MMF and plenty of action with Indie’s past that needs to be dealt with. Cannot wait for Courtney’s story.

Mutual Obsession is Miles, Indie and Jacob's story. They have history together (Miles with Jacob, and Miles with Indie) but, due to lack of communication, the relationships didn't work out. It's now years later, Indie is back, past relationships are reevaluated, and new relationships start.

This is a mafia romance, so there's plenty of drama, as you'd expect in a book like this. The new relationships aren't instantly smooth sailing, either, it takes time for them to get to a good stage.

Liked seeing Bree and the others again! Just as fun and intense as always.

An enjoyable addition to the series!
