This is part of a series of books on the world's myths and legends. From the covers they look like they are meant for younger readers. But after reading several they are quite sophisticated books, with lots of details and beautiful illustrations. What drew me to this particular book is the fact that there are not many books out there that give us the goods concerning Arab legends. This volume fills a much needed gap in our understanding of the rich lore of Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
The author divides the book into two parts: The first deals with the "extinct" Arabs, before the coming of Islam. The second is post Mohammed. The stories of the first part are charming enough, although I liked them more for the fact that I never heard anything like them before.
The stories after Islam are interesting in that we are given much information on how the early Moslems speculated on God's magnificence and how the universe was structured. (Someone needs to tell Neil Degrass Tyson that the earth sits on the back of a huge whale!)
The book ends with some lesser known stories from the Arabian Nights.

AMAZING BOOK!
First off: While the book is large, and has many gorgeous, colorful illustrations, it is definitely not a children's book. It provides detailed historical and cultural background information on both pre-Islamic and Islamic stories, which I enjoyed to read and learned a lot from.
And the tales... oh, the tales! They are gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful. And only one of them is taken from the Arabian Nights (City of Brass, my personal favorite), so they can be new even to people who work with stories as much as I do. The stories come from many sources and depict many parts of Arab culture, from magical journeys through jinn to King Suleyman and tales of heroes from the tribal times. It is an endless treasury of exciting and breathtaking stories, and beautiful visuals.
Definitely read it.

کتاب شهرهای افسانه‌ای، شاهزادگان و جن‌ها نوشتهٔ خیرات‌الصالح دربارهٔ اساطیر در میان عرب باستان و افسانه‌های آنهاست. این کتاب افسانه‌ها و داستان‌های عربستان را از اسطوره‌های باستانی دوران پیش از اسلام یعنی از هزاران سال پیش که تمدن‌هایی در شبه‌جزیره عربستان شکوفا شدند؛ بازرگانان راز بادهای موسمی (مونسون) را می‌دانستند و با پنهان نگه‌داشتن آن تجارت دریایی را در انحصار خود نگه می‌داشتند و ادویه‌جات و ابریشم را از هند و چین به جهان غرب می‌بردند تا داستان‌های عامیانه دوران طلایی جهان #عرب_مسلمان را روایت می‌کند.
این داستان‌های کهن، که پیرامون آتش در اقامتگاه‌های کوچ‌نشینان و در شهرها و کاخ‌هایی که اکنون دراعماق شن‌های روان مدفون شده‌اند گفته می‌شدند؛ امروز نیز مانند آن زمان جذاب و دل‌انگیزند.
داستان‌هایی درباره اینکه چگونه عرب باستان بت‌پرست شد و خدایان بزرگ و آیین‌های آنان چه بوده است؛ اسطوره‌ها و افسانه‌هایی نزد عرب بائده (منقرض شده) و عرب باقیه، داستان‌هایی مرتبط با کاهنان و پیش‌گویان که عرب بت‌پرست پیش‌گویی آنان را علمی بسیار تخصصی می‌دانست و به آن «فراصت» می‌گفت؛ حکایت‌هایی در باب سخاوت و شرافت و وفاداری، اعتقادات آنان پیرامون جهان آسمانی و زمینی،فرشتگان و جن‌ها.
نویسنده در این کتاب توضیحاتی پیرامون مجموعه داستان #هزار_و_یک_شب داده است. مجموعه‌ای که خوانندگان غرب آن را با عنوان «شب‌های عربی» می‌شناسند و حاوی داستان‌های عاشقانه و جنایی، داستان‌های طنزآمیز، جست‌وجوگری‌ها و سفرنامه است. دنیایی که هیچ تمایزی بین خیال و واقعیت، طبیعت و ماورای طبیعت و سرنوشت پادشاهان و سرنوشت بردگان قائل نیست. هزار و یک شب جهانی است که داستان‌های متنوع را در یک کل هماهنگ با هم ترکیب می‌کند.
همچنین کتاب دارای نقاشی‌های زیبایی است که اسطوره‌ها و افسانه‌هایی که دربارهٔ آن صحبت شده است را به تصویر کشیده‌اند.
