Lena Rose Winter was a typical seventeen year old girl, or so everyone thought. She had a hated secret and she knew what love was, but she dreaded it. Liam Christopher Black was far from your typical bad boy. He was a good guy, the one who would sit at the back of the class, not making a sound. His family dying in a car crash cost him his voice. Lena knew becoming friends with someone was a great risk because you could always end up caring too much. But still, she fought for the boy and his friendship but they ended up falling for each other. Hard. It seemed as if the world didn't want them together as they faced struggle after struggle to beat the odds. But will the risks be enough for their relationship to survive? Amidst the trials and bad experiences, will both of them learn to truly love again?
This book managed to keep me hooked the whole way through. With the chapter by chapter updates on Wattpad, I found a way to keep their unique story running around in my mind until the next chapter was posted.
This story kept not only me, but my friends, talking about the true meaning of love and I am grateful that it is now being published as it means that I can carry it with me everywhere.
17-year old perpetual new girl Lena Rose Winter moves wherever her mother’s job takes their family of two. Her mobile lifestyle, coupled with her tragic history, keeps her from connecting with people. Her natural beauty and wit, however, always gets people’s attention – including that of hot, mysterious classmate Liam Christopher Black.
Liam, an orphan who has no one left in his life but his grandmother, bears his own scars. The loss of his family in an accident has left him unable to speak. The two teenagers connect immediately, quickly becoming best friends. Through the challenges of fitting in at school, to the larger twists and turns of the real world, Liam and Lena’s truly “Unique Kind of Love” conquers them all.
Jasmine Rose’s A Unique Kind of Love is a sweet, little contemporary young adult romance with all the right ingredients: likeable characters, teenage angst, drama and humor. It hits the right emotional notes too, not unlike the mellow contemporary pop songs it quotes and seems to have drawn inspiration from, including works byHarry Styles, Christina Perri and Ed Sheeran.
If you need a little break from the sea of dystopian and paranormal YA books that are out there, A Unique Kind of Love may be just the book for you. Its clever teenage cast of characters might not be heroes bearing the weight of the world, but it’s a little reminder that family, young love and romance in the high school setting is a struggle too.
I love this book and the plot is amazing, how they fall in love slowly and inconspicuously is really adorable. I read this on wattpad but i have to sat that I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance story. Also, how the boy is mute also makes it better because they are able to communicate just through looking at each other. Congrats to Jasmine to getting this book on goodreads.
I mean really? Did we all read the same book? She seems like nothing but I bitchy stereotyping 17 yr old. Typical. And the events that transpired in that 10%? Not believable. She actually dumped water on Jonah AND punched him? AND says "freakin slut" to the waitress? What is she? A tantruming toddler? Zero class.
Needless to say, I couldn't spend any more time in Lena's head. Awful.
In general I am not a huge fan of contemporary books, nor am I a fan of cheesy romance. This book however was absolutely brilliant in my opinion! It is very realistic, unlike many " fairy-tale perfect romances". There isn't a " Perfect prince" but there is a boy (liam) who has lived through the death of many people that he has loved, and that has become mute. There is a girl (Lena) that is trying to find her herself, deal with a new school all whilst falling in love.
They started of as friends, there was no insta- love! As he is mute, she learns to understand him just by looking at him, which I think is adorable. Through their love, Liam finds his voice, which does sound cheesy, but it isn't to do so much with the fact that Lena loves him. Its that she showed him how to move on from his past, and not let it dictate his life.
I've been in a bit of a book funk lately, which lead me to A Unique Kind of Love. The reviews for this book are insane!
I thought this was a cute book. Liam and Lena were adorable! In this time when teenagers are so anxious to grow up, it was nice to see them embrace being young. They liked to play in the snow and read together and argue over who was right about a math problem. They were great support systems to each other and it was cute watching them fall in love. I also adored the supporting characters, especially Lena's mom!
This book had a great base and the potential to be absolutely amazing, with an editor. As far as spelling/grammar mistakes go, this was far from being the worst I've seen with an independent release, but it could still use a little help. What I think an editor would have been great for is fixing a few of the inconsistencies (e.g., Lena says she has to read the poem Liam wrote and on the next page introduces the poem as being written be Tori) and making sure big moments were handled with care.
For instance, the description of the book says that the death of Liam's family traumatized him enough to lose his voice, but this was never addressed in the book. Lena just deducts that Liam is mute and that's that. There's also the point in the book where Liam briefly stops being Lena's friend unexpectedly and without explanation. While I was able to deduce why (I think), it was frustrating for this issue to be dropped without any discussion.
Also, Lena lost her dad when she was young and she talks about how kids accused her of killing her father, which made zero sense to me because of the way he died. I also felt this could have been addressed. Finally, there was the appearance of Tori, which was handled in just a few pages, with little fanfare and complete acceptance. This was one of those things that seemed would take some adjustment for the average person. But maybe I'm wrong.
There was this huge restaurant brawl that seemed completely avoidable. If I had a waiter as rude as the one they had upon being seated, I would have either called the manager or left. They did neither, which led to the arrival of a second unprofessional waiter that conveniently 'coincidentally' happened to be someone from Belle's past. More words were exchanged and fists were thrown and managers were nowhere to be found. I didn't understand how things went as far as they did without intervention.
The last thing I felt could have been done a little better was the introduction of 7-year-old Ellie. Liam sees this little girl crying in the hospital by herself. He approaches her and she's wary...for a few seconds...until Liam says something to the effect of "I know you're not supposed to talk to strangers but I'm not mean. I want to be your friend." And Ellie is just like, "okay." I was just concerned that she would be unable to avoid abduction later in life because that was a classic kidnapper line.
Like I said, with an editor to help the author address some of these issues, this book could be amazing!
I don't understand how this book had so many positive reviews.
This was a very underdeveloped book. It has a lot of potential, but there were also a lot of things wrong. The dialogue was unnatural. There was little explanation about things like Why was Leo mad at Lena for just one day? Why doesn't he talk? There are some things that just need to be addressed.
I understand that this was written by a young, teenage author. & it's so good that she's writing & has put so much effort to see this from Wattpad to publishing, but I wish this would go through a few more edit drafts. It felt like she was just living out her fantasies.
The attachments happened too fast. Between Liam/Lena, Lena/Tori, Elli/Liam... just everyone. The characters were all rather juvenile in their thought processes. There was very little character development besides Liam.
This just... was a very disappointing, half-baked book.
I will give appreciation for the epilogue, for not having every relationship work out.
Filled with grammatical errors, choppy writing, and nonsensical descriptions such as "her expression displayed an emotion", this book is far from being one of the best books I have ever read.
I am genuinely confused and curious about why it has received raving reviews on goodreads. There are awkward situations, stiff dialogue and a whirlwind romance that is hard to stomach - just what do people like about this thing?
I've read this book about 2 years ago initially from Wattpad and I was so hooked up I had to get my hands on the physical copy which isn't sold in Malaysia that I had to ask my dad to order one for me from Amazon, which its shipping to Malaysia costs a fortune but it was soooo worth it!
This book also deserves a review of it's own, but I DNF-ed it, so... It's not a one star because I really feel like the book had potential. I need a few days to relax from the readathon, then I'll read it all the way through, take notes and write a review.
It all started nicely for me, it was sweet, I found myself glued to my spot, not moving wanting to continue reading it. BUT THE NUMBER OF ILLOGICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED LATER ON MADE ME CHANGE MY MIND.
*takes a deep breath*
It's hard to find positive points in a pool of negative thoughts BUT I did find one! The romance was lovely, annoying at times, but lovely nevertheless.
Now, for the negative points. *clears throat* Settle down, children it's going to be a long list.
ATTENTION ATTENTION there might be some spoilers but if you can't handle the curiosity then please proceed.
Let's start with how Liam pretended to be mute. I understand that he had a rough past, still struggling with the present but why was he? It was never mentioned in the book itself even when Liam started talking again.
I hate it that the girl, Lena, had to be the one with the first move at the beginning at the book at some situations.
Now here comes the serious spoilers, I advise you to stop reading if you haven't read the book yet.
The number of illogical events was real high in this book. In the scene where the two families (Lena's and Liam's) decide to eat at the dinner and the guys get into fights with the waiters, the moms were sitting there mouth open in shock not even intervening when the fight got so serious to the point that an ambulance was needed. WHY THE JELLY WOULD THEY SIT STILL? MOVE PEOPLE! DO SOMETHING!
AND NOW LADIES AND GENTLEMEN TO THE BIG SCENE, where Lena is dying. No, she's already dead.
BUT NOOOOOO, even though the doctor said that there was no hope, her heart stopped beating and it was over, Liam decided to not give up on her and started singing. And guess what? the sound of his angelic voice brings Lena back to life.
I managed five chapters before I gave up. I read here so many reviews where everyone was writing how great this book it and... It isn't. It's horrible. I was especially curious about this book because I like reading stories where one character has my name but Lena in this story is a freaking asshole. She doesn't talk with a girl who wants to be friends with her then is surprised when she is ignored by said girl, she calls a waitress a slut because the waitress flirts with her date she doesn't even like. She talks how happy she is then she's crying, she talks how collected she is then he hits a guy in a face (he actually was a dick so it was fine). The supposed main male character could be interesting, I don't know I can't read it anymore because if I do my eyes will bleed.
i think you always have that one book you wish never ended, so you could read more of it everyday, i felt exactly this way reading a unique kind of love. i always specified an exact time for this book, just like my homework, and when i couldn't sleep i just remember Lena and Liam and they just take me to another dimension. i realy love this book, because it's not one of those classic stories you hear again and again, it's UNIQUE, and i truly hope for everyone who read it to feel the same way as me, Enchanted. Thank you to Jasmine because if it wasn't for her talent and her brave heart i'd never know what means love .
I generally hate romance books. I usually don't read them as a rule, however this book was just so completely, utterly, heart meltingly beautiful I couldn't help but fall in love with it.
There are none of those generic plot twist, no stupid female lead characters, no idiotic male leads and none of that being so utterly obsessed with one another that everything is instantly forgiven. This book is pure reality, and that's why I love it!
And a BIG congratulations to Jasmine Rose since I first read this book while it was on Wattpad and I was there when she was till deliberating about whether she should publish it and now it has been and I couldn't be more proud!!! Congrats!
*wipes tears from eyes at 9 am in morning* When my feels calm down enough to formulate words, I can write a review...
This is a MUST read romance. It centers around a 17 year old girl names Lena who had suffered great loss in her family and is resistant of love, but she meets Liam has suffered a greater loss of losing his family have met. It chronicles their relationship like the beginning are awkward. It was so endearing to read about the ups and downs with laughs and tears to accompany them. They both have some demons of their past to get through together.
Final Thoughts: It was lovely seeing two characters who go through so much and still come out on top. It was just SO WONDERFUL.
Out of the 37 books I've read in Wattpad, this book definitely my favorite! I've loved it from the start, and every single chapter, paragraph and line of it. It's unique and totally awesome! I could read it all day long for days. I would even stay up to 3 AM in the morning just reading it. It's that awesome! And you're an awesome author, seriouslyyyy! I'm so happy for you and congrats! You deserve all of the fans you have, your dreams coming true and more. ♥
P.S. I'm bad at writing reviews so here's um uhh a review-ish comment thingy? YOU'RE AWESOME YAY! *throws confetti*
I just can't. I hate DNF-ing a book but I can't take it anymore. HOW DOES THIS HAVE SUCH A HIGH RATING?! The relationships are completely unbelievable. You just find out you have a half-sister who is only a year older than you- she shows up at your doorstep and just moves in- you are best friends with her in 5 minutes. There may be a story here somewhere in the bad writing... but I just can't put anymore effort into it at this point.
I won't be rating it since I DNF at 25%. Darn you BookBub and your enticing deals. Sucked me in for 99 cents.
When I read this on Wattpad, I thought that it was the most amazing book ever. And I still do. I will definitely buy this once it comes out because I want to read this book over and over again. c:
I like the concept but... i will be on the minority coz i cannot even push myself to finish it.The H/H have no Connection, the story is everywhere.I just don't feel it.
This was the first young adult romance novel I read. Seeing as this was published from Wattpad, I'd say this is a good book for those looking for a love story between people living their youths.
It was a fun experience. Though I wasn't completely immersed into the characters, Jasmine would at times make you feel somewhat attached to the characters.
I couldn’t finish this book. How did it get such good reviews? Actually, a better question is how did it get published? The writing is incredibly choppy. There’s no flow. The plot is nonexistent. The characters have no depth. Everything feels very one-dimensional. And the whole thing feels like it was written by some obnoxious middle school girl.
