Passing Through Cafe #2

Gratification in Gluttony

Rate this book
When Jude entered The Passing Through Cafe, Toni thought he’d be nothing more than a fun night, a challenge to win, a fixation to satisfy; Toni didn’t expect Jude to be exactly what he never knew he was looking for.

As the rightful heir to the Maryno family dynasty, Toni grew up with clear expectations of who he was supposed to be, and more importantly, who he wasn’t. Growing up a constant disappointment isn’t a childhood experience he recommends, but he’s come a long way from the little boy who could never measure up to his family’s toxic standards. At twenty-nine, he’s finally proud of the man he’s built himself into, and while the routine of his life is simple and, sure, sometimes lonely, he’s content.

Or so he thought.

Enter Jude, a human from across the veil, who ignites something in him that he’s never allowed himself to indulge, and Toni can’t wait to burn. While the spark of attraction is instantaneous, he knows it’s going to take more than a romp in the hay to win the human over. So Toni quickly sets to work, proving to Jude that home can be found in the most unexpected places, that chosen family is always worth fighting for, and that their love is far from small.

Join Toni and rest of the eccentric staff of The Passing Through Cafe in Nik Knight’s rom-com urban fantasy series, full of found family, hilarious hijinks, spectacular self-discovery, and love that defies definition.

This was surprisingly cute and less surprisingly very funny. I had fun with this book, even if it wasn't as good as the first one.
I understand why Toni and Jude's story runs parallel in time to the first book, but honestly...it was quite boring. Even though nothing from the first book is really retold (thank goodness) the plot is limited and the little that is new is quite unspectacular.
Then I was actually hoping that you would get more in terms of world-building, after all, everything is told from the demon's point of view and I thought it would be interesting and many scenes would be set in Purgatory ...
This book is actually completely character driven and as funny as they all are, the whole story is superficial.
BUT, a thousand thanks for Toni! I had my doubts, because I didn't really connected with him in the first book, but he's a treasure.
So Toni is a wonderfully sweet character who likes to talk his head off and flirts a lot, but who has such a big heart.

Jude smirked, eyes dancing with mirth. “Honestly, I think a check to your ego will be good for you. Think of it as a teaching moment. You know, for personal growth.”
Oh, this human had spunk. Toni liked that; he liked that a lot. “Well, sweetheart, I think you’ll find I’m a very eager student. For the right teacher, that is.”
🤭🦈🤭

“I don’t know what a bulldozer is. Is it sexy?” Toni waggled his brows, bringing another chuckle from Jude.
“Sure,” he said.
“Then I’m a bulldozer, baby,” Toni said haughtily, and Jude shook his head and rolled his eyes. But he was smiling, and it made Toni feel things. And not just dick things. Other things. Like, feeling things.
😊🦈😊

And I'm sorry to say that I don't like Jude that much. He was a bit of an asshole and also sometimes sweet. I think this is where the one-sided POV unfortunately comes to a disadvantage. I would have liked to understand Jude better.
Overall, it's too long, half the words would probably have been enough. I'm also not sure if I'm interested in another book ... unless it was Rusty's story from his point of view ...
What else ... oh yeah, WTF was that first chapter? I was so annoyed by it, and then offended by it, that I was tempted not to read any further ... especially as it was completely unnecessary in terms of content.
But to end with something nice, I'm a fan of how flexibly all sexual interactions have been handled here. The toys and Toni's enthusiasm for all things Jude and Toni's softer side were outstanding.

At the first swipe of Toni’s tongue, both of them moaned, Jude’s fingers tightening impossibly in Toni’s hair. But that was okay. Toni would let him yank out all his hair if it meant he was making Jude feel good. 🦈😍🦈

⭐️ 5 stars ⭐️

“I can tell you’re gonna be about as subtle as a bulldozer.” “I don’t know what a bulldozer is. Is it sexy?” Toni waggled his brows, bringing another chuckle from Jude. “Sure,” he said.
“Then I’m a bulldozer, baby”

This was a BLAST. I was really hoping for a Rusty book, but Toni and Jude’s story was still awesome. They were sweet & sexy, and the whole cast is a hoot and I need a book of each and every one of them.

“Is it weird that I’m getting turned on at the thought of choosing which dick you fuck me with? ’Cause, baby, it’s doing things to me.”

Amazing trans rep, great found family vibes, positive self-acceptance moments, hot as sin smut — this series is absurdly funny but also so wholesome and I can’t wait for more.

“Come, Toni,” Jude said, air puffing against Toni’s parted lips. “Be a good boy, and come on my dick.”

The tension between these two was sooo good, I loved how they went from friends with a 34% flirting margin to friends who maybe kiss to finally lovers. The banter, the flirting, the spice??
It was so perfect, I have zero complaints.

But while everyone was watching the magical light show, Rusty was watching Gem.

STOP ‘cause how fucking cute would it be if Gem and Rusty got together??? I’m dying, it’s too much. I’d honestly be happy even if the next installment is about Zef, ‘cause they’re awesome as well, but a Gem and Rusty book would make me sob.
So yeah, I enjoyed the hell out of this and I can’t wait for the next one. Extremely hilarious with a sweet romance, what more could I ask for?

“Love ain’t about deserving. It’s about choice.” Releasing Jude, Toni started down the ladder, giving his human a wink. “And I choose you, bitesize. It’s as simple as that.”

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Toxic family dynamics
- Homophobia/transphobia
- Human x demon
- Found family
- Trans MC
- Toys (lots of dick options)
- Non-human genitalia (two dicks is better than one)
- Vers MCs
- Lingerie

Pre-read update — This cover is so ADORABLE and Toni is way cuter here than what I was picturing in my head in book one lmao. I NEED THIS

we;oifajawoifjf i swear i didn't expect it to be as good but it exceeded my expectations‼️

tbh this book hit some of the tropes that i usually avoid:
1. friends-to-lovers
2. trans mc (no hate i swear)
3. lingerie

but this book? it worked. jude and toni's chemistry was really good, i loved everything about them, from their borderline flirting to their outright flirting, it's so cute!!!!! somehow they just made those tropes work, i think it's cuz they were so accepting of each other it made me accept it too 😭 some high level transmission fr

and aside from the sweet, funny parts, this book went deeper with the soul-searching and the family dynamics, and made everything much more meaningful; that was what locked in the higher rating for me.

i think the found family also got stronger 😌 especially with gem and toni, their friendship are goals fr 😭 some really nice scenes with very suggestive gem-and-rusty relationship, which is probably the next book??? gosh i need the next book!!!!!

4.5 stars 🐰

I loved Toni!!! Knowing his worth and not settling for less made me want to hug him so hard 🥹 I liked Jude too, but I didn't like the way he treated my precious Toni, especially when his summer classes had finished.... Jude was very cute though and I loved his sassy side.

There was a really good mix of humour and emotion again, and I laughed so hard when the family business was revealed 😂 I did not see that coming at all.

The found family aspect was so cute again. I'm pretty intrigued by Zef and the potential set up for their book? I'm also dying to see Rusty and Gem finally get together!!

Another fun buddy read with Jonathan Samuel 😊

Such an adorable series. Really the perfect balance of funny shenanigans with a WHOLE crew of hilarious characters, and real heartfelt emotions. The positivity about gender roles and self acceptance was fantastic to read. And the slow burn relationship of Toni and Jude was so good!

One of the things that stood out for me was Toni’s backstory with his family. It’s pretty heartbreaking. Not because his family is evil but because they are careless with their words. Tearing him down in small doses, and they don’t even realize how it hurts him. They are so concerned with themselves. It’s so realistic so it just feels so much worse than an over the top evil parent. Luckily the found family part of this story is so strong, that it’s balanced out well. Such a sweet read.

4 stars. Book 2 in a series, different couple, same world, all friends, co-workers and acquaintances. The story does not pick up after book one, it runs at the same time as book one, so we sort of back-up and see some of the same events from a different perspective, through the eyes of different characters. We meet the main romantic couple in the first book, Toni and Jude, and we follow them through book two. I’d say that book one is a must-read, with book two not really able to stand alone. Almost all of the world building is done in book one as well as the foundations of all of the friendships and detailed descriptions of the different species.

While book one was an absolutely laugh out loud riot, book two is a slow, gentle, tender journey of pining, differences and acceptance. Jude’s gender identity plays a large role in the physical relationship as Toni asks questions, gets educated and discovers Jude’s likes and dislikes. All done in an open and honest way, through communication and again, acceptance. Toni isn’t phased by what he uncovers about Jude’s sexuality and it’s sweet that in this fantasy world, the two almost seem tailor made for each other.

Fantasy, m/m, series, book two, trans, HFN.

ARC review: first know, that I *never* arc read. Ever. It’s not my jam. But for Nik I made an exception and for them I ALWAYS would, because I am feral for anything they write.

NO ONE writes found family like Nik does, and it is my love language.

This series centers on a chaotic & hilarious found family that work together at Passing Purgatory cafe. This book focuses on Toni, the shark looking demon you see above, and Jude the human.

Jude and Toni are so cute. They have feelings for one another but the timing is off - however they can’t help but be drawn to each other. Despite the level hilarity you’ll find in these pages, the way these two guys handle their budding relationship with open communication is quite mature, and a breath of fresh air. Yes they’re silly, crazy, the demons are largely inappropriate at random times demanding to see nipples and using dildos as weapons (IYKYK) but their romantic relationships AND friendships (which are equally important and prioritized) are areas they do not mess around and remain open and honest.

I could talk about these characters all day, as is pretty on track with any/all of Nik’s books - they create characters that just just off the page and captivate you - but trust me and go read this one so you can experience it for yourself 🙃

4.5 stars, rounded up!

Oh, Toni, Toni, Toni. How I adore you. This was a really lovely story and a wonderful addition to the series. I laughed (a lot), swooned, and might've even sniffled a bit at times. Toni is undoubtedly the MVP here, which I'm sure he'd be very pleased about.

As expected, the side characters are all their own unique brand of hilarious, and the interactions and shenanigans are some of the best parts of this book. This series, really. I laughed so much my sides hurt. Even Toni's relatives (kind of) grew on me, though I'm still a teensy bit on the fence about most of them. Rusty's still my favorite though. Cranky ball of fluff.

The romance is very sweet, but not without its obstacles. There's no unnecessary drama though, which I always appreciate. Overall, I really loved seeing Toni and Jude fall for each other. Jude is very kind and supportive and so proudly trans that it made my heart super happy. I would've loved to get his POV, though! But that's me, hah. I just really love dual POV, and I feel like I would've gotten to know Jude a lot better with it. Just wanna get into all of their heads, you know?

But what about Toni? I was just getting to that, calm down! Toni is so precious, honestly. I just wanted to cuddle him. Just a lil squish. His friendship with Gem is beautiful and I just adore him as a character. He stole my heart, no doubt.

Overall, a great addition to the series. Hilarious, swoony, with just the right about of feels. We need more MM monster rom coms, okay? If you loved the first book, you'll definitely enjoy this one as well.

I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review.

"𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙤𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙣𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙪𝙘𝙠𝙨."

I adored the fact that this book was in Toni's POV. He's such a fun and likable MC to spend time with. Toni may have dealt with a lot of hurt in his life in regards to his family, but he didn't let it dull his shine. He truly is one of the sweetest men on his side of the veil. His friendship with Gem was such a highlight. Those two really are platonic soulmates.

Jude was on my bad list for a bit in this book. Since we didn't get to spend time in his head, he was harder to get a read on. And his actions at some points made me angry. To be fair, he does apologize. And of course, Toni, saint that he is, forgives him. I don't know if I would have forgiven as easily. I just hated Toni being upset.

I think my favorite parts of the book were the times when the Passing Through crew was together. Zef is a favorite. I really hope they get a book in the future. It would be interesting to see what they are like if they ever find another being interesting enough. I'm curious how they came to be so comfortable touching Tad and how their new living situation is going to play out. I was also totally getting vibes again between Gem and Rusty. I have a feeling those two are next. And I'm betting we find out just how good Gem is with those six hands of his. ;)

I’m in love with this series <3

I think my favourite thing about this series is that the books aren’t about ‘A’ couple. I mean they are in the sense that you have two MCs find each other, but to me (which is what makes them amazing) the books are actually about a group of people and even if a book focuses a bit more on two characters getting their HEA the book is still about a group of friends, the group as a whole are all MCs and the group is enriched with each HEA. I adore Toni. From the first book I kept imagining him kind of like the sharks in Finding Nemo who are all ‘fish are friends’. I’ve always loved them a ridiculous amount so I was super excited that their paranormal embodiment was getting his book. He’s hilarious and sweet and both brotastic and charmingly caring. Jude is a fantastic addition to the group and the trans rep is awesome. The scenes between him and Toni were *hot*! The highlight though will always be the way this group of friends interacts. The love (whilst sometimes expressed through violence and insults lol) is so genuine and solid. This is a family in the truest sense of the word and that makes reading these books genuinely joyful.

Read this book! Just do it! I seriously can not get enough of these characters in this series. I love them all and that’s really saying something. Both books so far have made me laugh and also cry which is exactly what I want and need! I am so stoked for book 3 I can hardly contain my excitement. Spoiler alert, it’s RUSTY! *Book Received in Exchange for Honest Opinion/Review*

I liked this story but I didn't love it which is unfortunately because I was positively enamored with Passing Through Purgatory. And while the same rag-tag group is back in Gratification in Gluttony, I never found myself immersed in the world.

So let me start off with what I didn't like, over half of the story overlaps with Passing Through Purgatory, which I hated. You are essentially reading the same book twice from different view points. Secondly, Toni randomly throughout the story refers to himself in third-person which is so cringy it took me out of the story every time. I think it was meant to be a cute character trait, but alas it was not.

In terms of romance, Jude and Toni had fantastic chemistry and the potential for greatness. But Toni has a heated temper, Jude is hot and cold, and as a sequel...the whole thing fell flat. Honestly, I wasn't a fan of how Jude treated Toni at all. Did I enjoy getting to see glimpses of my favorite characters, absolutely. But character cameos wasn't enough to save this story. And the set up for the next book leaves me on the fence because what started out as a promising new series from Nik Knight is quickly fizzling for me.

Sweet PNR

Really enjoyable sweet paranormal romance with a trans main character.

I adore the found family vibes of this series and how things like human transphobia are tackled through a lens of demons accustomed to different species having different ways of experiencing sex and gender.

In this, you'll find:
✨️MM Paranormal Romance
✨️Trans human architectural student
✨️Shark-type Hellian cafe cook
✨️Best friend's coworker
✨️Secret relationship issues
✨️Friends-to-lovers (kinda)
✨️Pining
✨️Found family
✨️Different anatomy
✨️Ac-sex-sories
✨️Wealthy, somewhat disapproving family
✨️Mention of family kicking out trans teen
✨️Mention of non-consensual drugging
✨️Mention of past SA
✨️A happy ending (without marriage & kids)

This was super cute and funny with lots of body positivity and queer rep. Toni had some temper problems and some internalized shame, but actively worked on those things and apologized when it was necessary. Jude was sarcastic and a fierce protector of those he cared about. He had his own issues, mostly revolving around fear that I can’t explain without spoiling stuff. They were cute together and Toni’s all in energy was balanced by Jude’s pragmatism. Super excited for Gems book, because he’s the star.

Spice: 3.5/5

Triggers: toxic family dynamics, bigotry, homophobia, transphobia (historical), speciesism, spiked drink of side character (no one is SAed), classism, mentions of sex work, discussion of dysphoria, mention of person who went missing/may of died during a drinking game, consensual trafficking, breaking and entering (kinda), accidental voyeurism and exhibitionism

Well. I'm not particularly surprised that this book wasn't as good as book one. Unfortunately, it is often the case that the first book in a new series is so brilliant that the second book simply can't keep up. It’s a shame, really.

Most of this story was a bit boring to be honest. As Toni and Jude's love story runs parallel to Liel and Ollie's, a lot of it wasn't really new. In terms of the plot, it was a bit repetitive. Well, except maybe for the last part, which I quite liked.

I'm afraid the next book could be the same, although I really hope Gem's book will be more fun than this one. I just love that crazy oversized spider.

Never did I ever think I would be so excited about a book with a two dicked shark non human man but here I am. Ate this shit right up.

Jude and Toni were precious baby angels and I loved them both from their introductions in book one. This book was funny and sweet and just a nice read. While there is a bit more angst to this big it’s not a rough read at all. The trans rep in this story is beautiful and heartwarming.

I love the Passing Through Cafe. I love this characters. Give 14 more.

Passing Through Purgatory #1 , a story that was not only a stellar introduction to the complicated series universe but to the highly diverse characters from both worlds this series is based upon is a favorite of mine. Including the otherworldly diner they work in, The Passing Through Purgatory Cafe.

I love that book and couple. Oliver and Liel, both so different and yet so deeply compelling as a couple , along with everyone else were a fantastic story.

It’s where we met human Oliver’s best friend, Jude, and co worker, Toni, an extroverted demon Elas. Knight beautifully portrayed the Hell dimension, its many species and territories, including the political and societal issues that are seen in the human world. Not astonishing since some of the territories have names such as Gluttony, Lust, or Greed.

That narrative gave the reader overlays of pathos to go with humor, thoughtfulness and compassion to go with the sexiness of the developing relationship. And the excellent characterizations!

However, in Gratification in Gluttony, something has been lost, starting with the characters. The anticipated romance between Jude and Toni isn’t as strong as the one between Oliver and Liel. And that has to do with not only the characters as they’re portrayed but the relationship between them. There’s so much sex, not unusual but it’s given so much attention that everything else like cohesion of characters and details of grounding in backgrounds is lacking.

Primarily, my issue is the character of Toni the Elas. He has so much potential but feels like it’s not really well defined. He’s a being that has left his family business, cutting ties with them, mostly to become his own being. But the few scenes written with interactions between himself and them (with the exception of a BIL), don’t seem to support that framework. What is off putting is Toni’s explosive anger issues, and his continued poor treatment of Rusty the Pyclon, a pink walking Care Bear with a snarky attitude that hides a very damaged past. Toni is told repeatedly by different friends, including bff Gem, that Rusty is very young whose sometimes annoying facade is due to a terrible past. Does he have compassion or stop being borderline abusive? No, not even when Rusty himself offers to the group a bit of his awful adolescence.

His temper and lack of compassion to others ,as written, didn’t extend to expectations for himself. I wasn’t sure why Knight thought that showing him consistently in this way was a good idea. But it kept me from connecting with him.

As did Jude’s treatment of him during their growing relationship. Jude is an incredibly well crafted character but not one I liked a lot. I understood their background and actions but together this wasn’t a relationship that I enjoyed wholly. Maybe towards the end. But that’s when it could be perceived as a start of a relationship.

Unlike the other characters, these two are the primary focus. No isn’t much narrative wandering about here to enhance our observations about this dimension or our understanding of these characters. There’s scenes from the first novel we see from different angles, and the next couple is being set up for their story.

This really didn’t expand on any new world building or add much to the series overall in terms of exploration of the territories, economics, or even the environment that surrounds them. More of this please just as in the original story.

Interesting but not a couple I can connect with. Looking forward to book 3.

Great cover.

Oh my god, I really love this series. It's fun and cozy and so ridiculous. The romance is great, but the found family aspect is really what I love the most. Gem is such a star in these books, and I CAN NOT WAIT for his own story. Every character brings something fun and interesting to the story. These books are very low angst, and they're such a comfort to read. I really loved how the trans rep was written here, and as a trans person myself, I found it super relatable. It may not be fully necessary to read book one, but it will definitely help make things make sense and up the enjoyment factor. I actually think I like Jude and Toni more than Oliver and Liel, but I just love them all so much. I highly recommend checking this one out.

!! I don't equate fiction stories to real life. It's a matter of personal taste and what you are willing or want to tolerate in the books you read. We all have different opinions and preferences when it comes to the kind of books we enjoy, so it's important to respect and remember that it's just a book!!

It was so good to be back in the Passing Through Cafe world! I've missed the characters and it was great to pop in for a visit. We also got to see some scenes from the first book from a different perspective.
In this book we have the story of Jude and Toni, Jude is a human and Toni is an Elas. Toni was different from what I thought he would be like, or what glimpses we good of him in book 1. Toni was sentimental and emotional, and while I didn't see that coming I really liked him. He was so honest about his feelings toward Jude and I loved that! Jude was guarded when it came to his feelings and it took him a while to come around, but it was great when he did. I loved that Toni was happy to be a friend to Jude if that was what Jude could give him, but he couldn't shut the flirting down. I loved Jude's bossy attitude a lot(Toni also loved it)! They bonded and understood each other because of their struggles with being accepted by their families and I loved that they talked about that.

There were also a lot of funny moments and over the top shenanigans, plus we can't forget the great banter that this found family has! Gem, Rusty, Zef, Tad, Quin, Glyma, Willow, Krul, Oliver and Liel were there for most of the shenanigans and I just love their found family.

I definitely recommend this book and I'm very excited for the next one in the series!

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

Oh man, THIS BOOK. I was so excited for it simply because one of the MC’s is trans and is part of the nipple free crew, which I have recently become a part of. I knew I was going to adore this book before I even read it, but this surpassed even my high expectations. This is my favorite Nik Knight book so far, and that’s saying a lot because I have loved every last one of their books to date. Honestly, this might be my favorite book ever? At least top 5 😍😍😍

The way Nik handled not only the intricacies of a trans MC’s life, but intimacy, found family, the conscious disregard for societal gender norms, healing from toxic masculinity, and becoming vulnerable after pain? All while still making this book HILARIOUS. Incredible. I cannot wait to see what is next!!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Gratification in Gluttony is the second book in the Passing Through Cafe series. This book could be read as a standalone but as it runs concurrently with book 1 and most of the world building is done there I would suggest reading the series in order. This is the story of Jude a human and Toni a demon. I'm not sure which book I like better book 1 or this one, so it's nice that I don't have to choose. I just love Toni because he is just so precious. Jude comes off as a sweet jerk but he has his reasons. I loved how Jude's sexuality was handled. I loved the humour and emotion in this book. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

"Love ain't that small"

I definitely didn't expect this book to be so deep when it comes to the concept of love. Toni's view on it is exactly like mine and it only added to how much I already relate to him. I love the found family here and the romance was great, too. But honestly this took me by surprise with its depth. I absolutely adore this book, can't wait for more of this series!! ❤️

3.5 stars. Good reading, but not quite as impressive as the first book. Personally, I felt that the romance between these MCs wasn't as strong as the two in the previous part. I'm very much looking forward to Gem's story next.
