maybe the privilege of being alive is to eat....and not only that but to eat with the people you love.....to focus on the small things, the next meal, in keeping yourself alive while you figure out the bigger things.......maybe dreaming of being alive is enough.......

The story of a party that started in the dungeon, building worlds brick by brick, and savoring each bite of dishes made from monster meat. They faced the dungeon master, an eldritch demon, and all their fears for a dear friend. Somehow, it ended deliciously with a satisfying ending.

This is a manga masterclass from the first chapter to the satisfying end. It defines several genres, from fantasy manga in general, to dungeon diving, Lovecraftian horror, and gourmet manga. If any of those genres scratch an itch, and you want to see fantastic art that is refreshingly distinct from others in the market, this manga could be for you.

I'm glad the mangaka also knew that the only proper way to end this series is a big feast with all the characters. I discovered the series in January of this year with the start of the anime, but I fell in love hard and it undoubtedly turned out to be one of my favorite things ever. I'm a little sad it's over now, but everything wrapped up nicely and I feel like I ate my fill (hehe).

it's kind of hard to process everything i am feeling about this manga right now since i've been crying nonstop for the last 5 chapters but i will try my best.
desire, hunger, death... dungeon meshi handled every subject it stumbled upon in a not-so-normal way and i think that's the main reason why it made this big of an impression on me. your desires getting consumed is not your end, you can always desire new things and do new things with your life. you can always learn new things from different people you stumble upon, no matter how little it is it will make a difference in your life.
we can't always have everything we desire and that is okay. no matter how little it seems spending time with your loved ones is worth it. birth, growth, death... and hunger. all of it is in the natural cycle of life.
maybe sharing a meal with family and friends or even strangers is the greatest desire of all, whether the meal is delicious or not-so-delicious. or maybe the thing that makes the meals delicious is the people we share it with, if that makes any sense.
thank you ryoko kui for the bottom of my heart for this beautiful manga, it will always have a special place within me.

As the smoke clears after the explosive ending of the previous penultimate volume, our heroes gather themselves, check on the survivors, and set out on the most collaborative challenge: cooking and eating an entire chimera body. This is a satisfying and in some ways gentler ending than I expected from this series, but I really enjoyed it!

I hate endings. I'm famous for it! (in my head, where i can be famous for things) and dear god am I prolific. I cant recount a single piece of media Ive consumed that I thought had a good ending. Ever.
Now I dislike endings for lots of reasons. Of course I dislike them for the usual: "the story is over :( ill never see these characters again" but its always been something deeper.
The story escalated too much, its too different, and will never return to where it began. Which I think reflects something fundamental about me, but no need to dwell.
A lot of the time, its also a lack of resolution. The main conflict is resolved, sure, but we dont see the aftermath. We dont see these characters returning to their normal lives.
But in Dungeon Meshi!!!!!!! we do!!!!!!! and its so wonderful and a perfect close to a perfect story about hunger and desire and like fundamental human nature and the ending wraps it all up and its still. about. food!!!!!!
the presence of the prevailing food/hunger theme persisting to the end certainly quells a lot of the "this story is too different from the beginning, its just not the same story anymore" but of course theres still a bit of sadness there, especially because i love all the characters dearly (izutsumi, my beloved) but its bittersweet, not the typical dissatisfied sadness that morphs into anger.
we get to see the aftermath and moments well into these characters lives, which the manga serialized format definitely lends itself too. and its all so wonderful. I loved every second of it. The rambling cooking scenes and the absolutely fucking ABSURD climax, and the consuming of the literal concept of desire (<3 mithrun).
read this, because the ending is just as good as the 13 5* volumes before it.

5/5 This manga is truly something special. The ending was incredible and its final message will stick with me for a long time. I could gush about the art, characters, world and plot forever. Such an amazing series, with some of the best writing I’ve read in a manga in a long time. Definitely one of my new favorites!!

Iels vont me manquer toustes.

With their enemies behind them, the adventuring party can turn its attention to saving Falin Touden one last time. Of course, that will require a massive feast so they can eat their way to a solution,

The ending is fine, but I would have preferred a little less emphasis on Laios and some more time for closure with the rest of the large cast.

FOR REFERENCE:

Contents: Chapter 92. The Island -- Chapter 93. Falin 1 -- Chapter 94. Falin 2 -- Chapter 95. Falin 3 -- Chapter 96. Falin 4 -- Final Chapter. Delicious in Dungeon -- Bonus: Miscellaneous Monster Tales 14: Kensuke

Aw man, what a seriously great time this was. I haven't sped through a manga series in years, but I was carrying home armloads of volumes at a time from the library like I was 13 again (plus watching the anime after each arc). Genuinely funny, gorgeous art (body language! expressions! character design! scary monsters! FOOD!!), characters whose meals and nap-times and other boring everyday activities I will happily read about...

Other etc things I liked:

- The dungeon being akin to a man-made + self-sustaining ecosystem. The characters always explained juuuust enough about how things worked for the dungeon to feel well-thought-out and complex, but not bogged-down and boring
- soft magic my beloved
- the characterssss oh my godddd my best friends
- I know I love the characters when I'm moved not only by the big character arc moments, but the little things as well. Maybe especially, considering this series was much lighter on the drama and character angst than a lot of manga is
- Chilchuck braiding Marcille's hair ;-; Izutsumi cuddling Marcille ;;-;; that post-chapter art of Chilchuck introducing his daughters to his friends ;;;-;;; everyone saving Marcille with the power of a BIG SAPPY HUG ;;;;-;;;; i like Marcille
- the influences of Western-style high fantasy are obvious (knowing Ryoko Kui likes Dragon Age + Pathfinder makes so much sense), but it was still very fresh and it didn't feel like what I feared it would...a litRPG dungeon crawler
- the structure that guides a bit more than half of the series (new dungeon level, new monster, new meal) was kept fun by all the monster information we got with each new encounter! Again, such a good balance of giving & withholding worldbuilding information. I think Ryoko Kui has a very keen sense of what needs to be said (and when) and what is best left to the imagination. It helped that I adored the silly factoids about monsters, like how mimics' & treasure insects' particular instincts work together to make 'treasure' chests in dungeons!
- it was just so...moving and interesting because the plot choices made were both bizarre and simply effective. Falin is a great example of this, from her fucky resurrection to yes let's eat your demon chimera sister's dragon half in a big party and see if that'll fix her. As were the conversations about desire with the demon, and how desire underpinned everything. i am so jelly of and so inspired by these choices that are cool + sensible + easily-understood + result in crazy fun shit
- did i mention the characters

Absolutely perfect ending to an incredible series, I have no notes.

I'm so so happy to see the girlfriend reunited at last <33 and that last sprinkle of Kabru x Mithrun at the end was a special treat just for me, and I'm very grateful for that

What a wonderful fantasy series with a brilliant ending. Excellent world building and a fun take on an RPG system. I'd play a game based on this if they developed one, and I certainly want to watch the anime now.

I was really craving for something good to read, and my desires were finally satiated thanks to this manga. Consistence in its taste and extremely palatable from start to finish, Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon was a manga I never knew I needed so much in my life.

Its rare to find a manga so complete, with lovable characters that just keep growing on the readers, a surreal but comforting setting, plenty of humor, and lots of FOOD. I love how the artwork progressed through the volumes, improving throughout its course, while offering much versatility and range. Ryoko Kui really nailed the spot with the ending too, giving a proper send-off to the beloved characters and the world.

If you are in the need of a manga that will soothe you, make you feel cozy and where you can't help but fall in love with the characters, then this is it.
