Married to a producer who lives in Beverly Hills, senior beauty editor Christy Shaw spends weekdays working in New York, weekends with her husband on the west coast, and the hours between wondering what has gone wrong with her life
From Monday to Friday Christy Shaw is the senior editor of Allure magazine in Manhattan. By Saturday morning she's soaking in her producer husband's heated pool on Rodeo Drive, wondering how she can revive the transcontinental malaise of her marriage...
This story could of gained an extra star if the author Roz had resolved a major plot point (no spoiler). And if the main character Christy had been more fleshed out. For example showing (especially for women who are the primary caretakers) how hard it must be for Christy to be Wife/Mother/Career woman/and her own person all at once all the time. How rarely a happy medium can be achieved in everyday life.
There were some characters and scenes that, for me, added nothing to the story. Also the fact these ghastly people were all filthy rich! We are supposed to sympathise with such problems as flying first class or which to sell? a New York townhouse OR a Los Angeles mansion! (Like Love, i am POOR!! I would sell my own organs for her money or options in life!!)
Saying all that i did enjoy the dialogue, it was breezy and funny and Author Roz was good at giving the characters their own distinctive voices.
I guess the book can be summed up as a good ol 1980s beach read type, frothy and consumed quickly. Sadly no feminist-esqe commentary which is such a shame as Roz (Rosalind) Avrett had an interesting real life-she was the FIRST female director at BBDO advertising agency. She must of faced sexism and misogyny during her career. No reader is owed anything from an author, they write about what they want and communicate that how they want. But it is still a shame, a lost opportunity.
Summing up-It was fun in a trashy read way. About places and people i will never encounter in my life. And isn't that what stories should do, escape your own life for a little while?
