Monsters of Moonvale

A Guide to Ghosting

Rate this book
A man haunted by his past…When I moved back to Moonvale, I thought I’d finally be able to relax. Maybe rediscover who the hell I am after spending the past few years going from one crisis to the next.

But all that stress has taken its toll, because ever since I moved in, I keep hearing and feeling things that aren’t there. Breath on my neck. Invisible eyes watching my every move.

I’ve never believed in ghosts, but how else do I explain the sense that someone is here with me and they want me scared and begging for mercy?

A ghost trapped by her hopes… My whole life, I was a hopeless romantic, but I died before I found the love I dreamt of. Now I’m stuck here as a ghost, forever alone.

Or I was until the last person I’d want to spend my afterlife with moved into my house—the man who ghosted me. I could scare him away, but having him around makes me feel more than I have since I was alive.

Before I know it, I’m catfishing him on a dating app and messing with him every chance I get. But when I find out our past is more complicated than I realized, will I be able to stick to my revenge plot or give in to the undeniable spark between us?

A Guide to Ghosting is a high-heat monster romance featuring a grumpy plus size MMC looking to start fresh and the vengeful plus size ghost FMC haunting him.

Emily loves cozy, emotional, and spicy romances with a monstrous twist. When she isn’t musing on the merits of doting, dominant monsters, she reads an obscene amount of romance novels, and cultivates her eccentric recluse persona.

The concept is solid, cozy paranormal romance with a ghostly twist and I loved that the heroine wasn't afraid to get a little messy. Like, she did some genuinely questionable things and I was here for the chaos.

That said... I've had more fun with this author's other books. And I wish we'd gotten more depth, like, who was Dot before she died? Why did she have no family or friends? The world-building felt thin and I was left with more questions than answers.

Also, let's be real, it could've been so much freakier. I wanted more ghostly shenanigans, more eerie moments, more... well, spookiness. But okay.

All in all? A cute, quick read when you're in the mood for something light with a paranormal punch. Not mind-blowing, but definitely entertaining!

Noah was just the sweetest grumpy boi and I loved him. His struggles with depression were relatable. Dot was such an interesting character because she was going through an isolated form of self discovery and learned she wasn’t quite as nice as she always thought she was, but not as mean as she could have been. Her existential dread felt so authentic. They had a decidedly unfortunate period of reacquainting, but found their own HEA.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: mild dubcon, voyeurism, fraud, gaslighting and catfishing, grief from death of parent and self, mentions of parent illness, isolation, frequent discussion of death

Why did I wait so long to read this?? I remember talking about the lack of ghost romances a few years ago in Emily's discord server and she said "I got you guys" and gave us this amazing story of two people finding each other and love again. She always gives us the coziest stories that also tug on your heartstrings and dive deep into the characters' emotional struggles and growth. Her characters, whether human or not, are so relatable. And this book was no different.

Dot's petty revenge had me giggling and wanting to shout "GET HIM GIRL!" But man when we find out what happened in the past and why Noah is so grumpy....tears.

Loved getting cameos from other characters in the series. I screamed when they showed up. It's so fun how the stories and characters are all connected.

If you're looking for an emotional but silly and cozy paranormal romance RUN to get this book!

I read this as a serial posted on Emily's patreon, which is SO WORTH IT because this was such a fantastic story every week that had me glued to my phone when a new chapter was released. Emily has a way of writing that makes the supernatural and unreal feel wholly human. She gets to the heart of characters wether in joy or loss. Dot was a sh*t stirrer from the moment we meet her and she does not disappoint when poor unsuspecting Noah buys her house. Their history slowly reveals itself through some catfishing and ghostly haunting but these two feel like they were meant to have their lives (or un-lives) cross. Two plus size main characters that are H-O-T together with so many sparks flying. You will love every second of this heartfelt and silly story of a second chance at life and love.

Read as a serial on Patreon. 4.5 stars rounded up. Absolutely delightful tale of a second chance romance with a ghost. I loved the dual POV and anticipating the events from either perspective.

Unfortunately it appears that I'm personally cursed when it comes to ghost romance. 😭

It really didn't work for me, the catfishing angle with the guy thinking about both women felt suuuper uncomfortable.

The romance felt super rushed, if there even was any? They couldn't really communicate outside of a few texts until like 70% ish in. It was just smut without the characters having much of a connection.

The timeline was really unclear in the book, she goes from being alive in chapter one to being dead in chapter 2.
This isn't clear when she died, when they went on their first date and when he moved back.
I honestly thought they dated, he ghosted her, she died and then 2 weeks later he bought her house. 😭
This leads into my next point, I felt like the writing was kind of sloppy, unpolished and repetitive.

The FMC just felt like she was bullying him the whole time and he had the spine of a wet paper bag. I felt bad for the guy, but he didn't really have much of a personality. 💀

I feel like their story left a lot unresolved in terms of their long term romance, but to just throw in "oh read more of their story on Patreon" felt especially...idk weird? haha

Editing to add:

Also the fact that she has a bisexual awaking (slay) and it's his sister??
Who she's initially attracted to bc she sees her in the house first.
Then she tells him later on as a joke, he's like "wait what?"
And she's like "I guess good looks run in the family"
It was super crunchy 😭

Listen, is this completely unhinged and unserious? Yes. Did I enjoy the ride, though? Yep, I did! This is a new author for me and I gotta say, I liked her approach to this story. The premise is incredibly original and as I read more, I loved how funny and witty Dot was. The romance starts out kind of weird, but I appreciated the fact that the author even makes fun of it through Noah's character and I came away having had a good time! There were obviously some scenes that were a little cringy, but other than that, and having to suspend my disbelief, I would be interested in exploring this author's world a little bit more!

I had more fun with this than I thought I would! The concept is a good one, and I appreciated that even though this is firmly in the cozy paranormal romance zone it let its heroine do some genuinely fucked-up stuff. It’s hampered by the prose (first person present is a curse) and some shallowness of the characters and their world (we know almost nothing about Dot’s life prior to her death—it’s not even clarified why she had no family or friends to leave behind). I also think it could have gotten freakier with the ghost stuff, though I wasn’t as bothered by missed opportunities as those in Maneater. But overall it’s a fine diversion if you’re in the mood for it.

I’m really sad about this one.

The cat-fishing element of this made it really uncomfortable .

Because essentially the MMC is having an emotional relationship with a character called Jesse who is actually Dot but he doesn’t know that but then he’s having a sexual relationship with Dot while not trying to think of Jessie while he’s having sex with Dot. And as it’s
Cat-fishing, Dot doesn’t use her own picture as Jessie so he’s thinking of another woman while having sex with Dot. But then I would be confused because he would say things like she’s curvy the same way Jessie is, so I was like well is Dot using her own picture or not. But she can’t be using the picture because it’s established that they’ve been on a date already so, he would know who Dot is and her picture so she must be using another image. It’s just very confusing. It’s not till the end that we get told she is using a different picture which just made it so weird.

This just made it really uncomfortable because we got to 51% in and I just really couldn’t figure out how she was going to build the relationship between Dot and the MMC. I forgot his name! And then the reveal happened and it was just done! The set up and the building of the relationship made no sense.

It just kind of felt like cheating, even though it wasn’t cheating, but it felt like it was cheating.

You all are *not* ready for this. Emily once again tops herself (heheh). I keep falling more in love with her and this world through every book. (Though Space for More will *always* have a special place in my heart!🍓).

I was fortunate to be able to subscribe to her Patreon (patreon.com/c/EmilyAntoinette/) while this was being serialized and I fell so in love with the characters. So sad I am missing out on her current running omegaverse series!

Dot the Ghost is also a catfish!?

Dot ends up dead, a ghost, haunting her old home. Well, her house is sold to the man who GHOSTED her years ago. This is just so precious. Their love story was cute, up and down, and all consuming. Of course, Antoinette has done it again!

A Guide to Ghosting by Emily Antoinette is a paranormal romance that explores the afterlife of a hopeless romantic who has her last real connection move into her house after death. Dot and Noah had an amazing first date that left her hoping for a future with him only to have him ghost her. Now, years later, Dot is freshly deceased and the very man who ghosted her is moving into her house. Dot quickly decides to catfish him on his dating app to get her revenge as well as haunt his new home.

The read stays cozy and sprinkled with spice while never crossing the line into horror. While Dot may have vengeance on her mind she can only be so spiteful to the man who she so quickly fell for in her life and now that she’s stuck with him she’s able to see him as the good, while sometimes grumpy, man he is. Noah starts off a little rough around the edges, but we quickly see that he’s gone through some hard times and that his cynicism is due to him shielding himself due to past traumas. The two are both a joy to read and despite Dot’s spectral form they have some excellent and often quirky banter. The ghostly spice is done in a fun way and while Dot is no expert on her abilities, we never have to go through the awkward phase of her just being there unable to interact with the world in any way. The two ride the line of enemies-to-lovers (enemies aspect unknown to Noah) and fated mates splendidly with Dot questioning why her spirit form remains and the coincidence that Noah moved into her house.

This had me glued to the book constantly needing to know what Dot would do next. It’s a page turner that never felt like the story was dragging you along but also gave you the room needed to breathe. I look forward to seeing what other monstrous delights Moonvale has to offer.

Dot, recently departed and now a ghost, sets out to catfish Noah, the man that ghosted her after a perfect first date. Even though she’s set on revenge, she soon finds herself falling for him all over again. Noah doesn’t believe in ghosts, but he can’t deny the strange (and sexy things!) that start happening to him…can a relationship between a ghost and flesh-and-blood human work?

I’ve read my fair share of weird romances (and I use “weird” with the highest praise) but this is the first I’ve come across with a ghost as the main character.

Emily Antoinette didn’t disappoint.

Hot, sexy chemistry abounds along with plus-size representation in both the female AND male main characters. It’s a breath of fresh air to read about a woman being absolutely obsessed with a man who doesn’t have abs and ripped biceps.

Even though the book is obviously somewhat about death (considering the FMC is in fact dead), the story isn’t morbid.

You might not like Dot at first because she’s a little petty and vindictive, but can you blame her? She’s dead and stuck in her house for reasons unknown. But, as the story goes on and she discovers WHY Noah ghosted her after their first date, she becomes more endearing.

Noah is an absolute cinnamon-roll of a sweetheart with a grumpy exterior born of grief and stress. He’s likable and easy to love from the beginning.

It was a pleasure to watch Dot & Noah’s story unfold and even better finding out the answer to whether or not a ghost and a human can have a happily ever after.

I hadn’t had time to read the serial on Patreon, but as soon as I could get my hands on the book, I didn’t hesitate for a moment. Two days later, I found myself once again with a book hangover to nurse. One thing is for sure, I really loved reading A Guide to Ghosting—and as usual with Emily Antoinette’s books, the cover is gorgeous.

Since I discovered Emily Antoinette, she has quickly become one of my favourite authors. Thanks to her stories—and those of other authors I discovered at the same time—being plus-size is no longer synonymous with being impossible to love. Although these romances are fictional, the emotions they convey for plus-size people are very real.

A Guide to Ghosting features two plus-size characters and I really enjoyed that. I tend to come across stories where the curvy characters are FMCs rather than MMCs and all genders deserve to be loved no matter their size. Although some elements of this book may seem a little tough, there is enough sweetness in it to make you accept that, just like in real life, the characters’ lives can’t always be a smooth ride.

I really liked Dot’s sense of humour, which is both dark and sharp. She’s a smart young woman who hides an immense kindness behind a wall of defensiveness. Although she wants revenge on Noah, she quickly realises—as do we—that it’s not in her personality to be cruel. Noah, for his part, is a marshmallow; he’s both sweet and comforting. Despite the obstacles life has thrown in his way, and despite his gruff exterior, this man is a real cinnamon roll, just the way we like them. It’s impossible not to notice that these two souls were made for each other.

As always in the world of Moonvale, I enjoyed seeing characters we’ve met before. Max and Nugget were both crucial to the plot—I’m only exaggerating a little. I also enjoyed seeing Emma, Noah’s sister, whom I first discovered in Emily Antoinette’s new serial on Patreon.

If you don’t know who Emily Antoinette is yet, or if you haven’t had the chance to read one of her books, go for it; you won’t be disappointed for a moment.

A grumpy, plus-size man moves into a new home, only to realize he's being haunted—by the ghost of the woman he once ghosted. As she torments him for revenge (and secretly catfishes him on a dating app), their undeniable spark threatens to turn this haunting into something much hotter.
I have to start by saying I adore plus-size rep, period—but especially when it’s the MMC. We need more body diversity for all our main characters! I loved Noah immediately—grumpy, traumatized, and trying to work through his many layers of brokenness to find a way forward. His relationship with his sister was such a heartwarming addition, showing his softest side early on. Honestly, I’d love Noah as a brother.
While I usually love a grumpy-sunshine pairing, grumpy-vengeful worked so well here. Dot is feisty, petty, and sometimes a little misguided, which only makes her more endearing as her walls start to come down.
I never knew I needed spicy scenes featuring ghostly features, but I am 100% sold on ghost smut now. The push and pull between Noah and Dot kept things engaging, although the way they end up softening towards each other and finding healing is of course the highlight for me. I love how they overcome many complicated feelings and past experiences in order to choose each other and their own happiness. This story is short, sweet, and will haunt you in all the best ways.

SUCH A CUTE COZY, (and spicy) MONSTER ROMANCE.

Other than Maneater, which is the novella for this universe that covers Max’s mom and dad, this has to be my favorite. I’m so glad that there wasn’t the over dramatic fighting and anger between Dot and Noah because her of catfishing him. It broke my heart to see how much they loved each other—even if they didn’t realize it to begin with— only to be separated by well…death.

I’m glad they found each other again and I’m glad they held onto that connection between them instead of letting anger and disappointment drive them apart. Dot’s actions were totally understandable given her circumstances but I’m glad towards the end she asked Noah what happened—even if she asked the questions as her catfish profile. Her emotions of guilt and regret were incredibly real and I’m so thankful that Noah didn’t hold it against her, that he decided to fight for their connection. I love that when he found out who she really was that her true identity all but canceled out her other two “personas” because in the end she was..Dot. His Dot.

A romance between a living human and a ghost felt a bit out there, but if it's written by Emily Antoinette, I'll give any paranormal coupling a shot.
And I didn't regret it!

Dot is our petty, slightly voyeuristic, recently deceased ghost. We don't know how it happened, but what we do know is that she's still here and that her house has gotten sold without her consent. She was hoping that the new owner was the cute, colourful woman who viewed the house on multiple occasions. Unfortunately for her, it turns out that the buyer was the woman's older brother, Noah. Coincidentally, Noah is the man who Ghosted Dot after they had an amazing first date. And nothing is sweeter than a haunting revenge.

I adored Dot. She's petty and funny and really leans into the fact that she's dead and her bad behaviour can't really affect her personally anymore. She's also got a sweet side to her, though, and I enjoyed seeing her warm up to Noah. Her spitefulness doesn't come off as bitter, but rather as someone who's bored and found the perfect victim to take the edge of. Noah's an absolute sweetheart. He's probably sweeter than Dot deserved, to be honest. The story is written in Emily Antoinette's typical style of combining a cosy romance with an underlying emotional depth that reveals itself as the story develops. I enjoyed it!

3.5⭐️ rounded up

This was a fun, spicy, and surprisingly cozy paranormal romance. Dot might be dead, but that doesn’t stop her from stirring up plenty of trouble or heat. Catfishing a guy you went on one date with before dying? Girl, what are you doing?

Noah, bless him, is basically the most forgiving man ever. Between the haunted house antics, the emotional chaos, and the “is-this-sexy-or-terrifying” ghost encounters, I was quite entertained. Their chemistry walks that perfect line of chaotic, sweet, and steamy, even when it probably shouldn’t.

What really got me, though, was how lonely they both are. Underneath all the humor and spice, there’s an ache for connection that made me really root for them to find a little peace, even if one of them is a ghost making questionable choices. I do wish we’d gotten a bit more of Dot’s backstory.

Overall, this was a wild little blend of cozy vibes, spice, and second chances from beyond the grave. Definitely one to grab if you like your romances with ghosts, guilt, and a whole lot of heat.

selected for the cover, stayed for the story. Soft femdom and caretaking. I teared up when the MMC finally learned that the ghost girl who’s been sexily haunting him was the woman he had a connection with years ago and never stopped thinking about since. Just the thought of him pushing his own feelings down because his family needed him, thinking there’d always be more time, and then realizing that he’d missed out on The One… Permanently. The book handwaves the issue of him growing old while she stays the same, and what’ll happen to her when he dies, but I couldn’t help thinking about it. I’ve been married to my husband for 11 years and I think that seeing him grow older, and seeing my own body changing as well, the fact we can still enjoy each other sexually has been really healing to the part of my soul that was damaged by TV and movies depicting 30-year-olds as washed-up and decrepit. Needless to say the book gets 5 stars for making me feel things and reflect on my own life.

This book was fun!

I was unsure what to expect of a ghost, but I loved the plot, the humour, the inner thoughts of Dot as she wrestles with her new reality, the way that she thought of convincing Noah she was real, and even the catfishing.

It was a fun, lovely, cute, and romantic story of two people who you'd never think they'd find another. Life has a way of bringing them back together again. With the spiciness as a bonus.

I loved the representation of bodies here, the mental health mention, the need for love in your self, others, but also trusting those around you. Even the mention of sacrificing it all and taking a moment to indulge yourself in all that you have missed.

Not to mentioned the fun facts you learn of Dot's spectral form. What she can and cannot do, but also what she ends up learning as grows more into her ghostie powers. Loved it and recommend if you want a cute, funny, quick, spicy read.

I’m sorry but why am I out here crying at 3 am because this book is too darn cute and my emotions cannot take these characters and their growth in this book🥹 I absolutely adore this author and they are an automatic read for me, every-time they release a book it’s already in my KU because I’m never disappointed.

Tell me why a book about a ghost and the man who ghosted her is literally so amazing I caught myself stretching the read out so I could spend more time with them🫠🫣

It’s a rhetorical question because anything Emily writes is always a 5 🌟 read for me😂

The spice is spectacular give me 14 more of them right now. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I love this universe and all of the characters in it so you will definitely see me picking up each of these at least once if not more (for Maneater I’m going on like 3 rereads at this point💀)

Whenever Emily writes a book, I tend to go in knowing I'm going to love it and coming out not understanding just how much I was going to love it.

A Guide to Ghosting is literally no different. Somehow Emily makes falling for a Ghost as a human possible, sexy time and all.

Dot is adorable and not in the damsel in distress kind of way that a lot of FMC's tend to fall into when they are in a situation like she's in.

Noah is literal book boyfriend material. He's broody and stressed but underneath all that he just wants to be slightly dominated by his female partner.

This isn't a long novel where you get a whole ton of plot, but it's beautiful for what it is and I just knew I'd love it.

Well done, yet again Emily.

I don't know why I keep forgetting that Emily Antoinette doesn't write cute monster romances, she writes monster romances that destroy me. This one in particular.
Dot goes on a date and gets ghosted... then dies and guess who buys her house... the dude that ghosted her. Hillarious premise but the amount of mental health rep, the grief the longing the people pleasing it's so vulnerable. Plus Dot is my favorite type of FMC... imperfect. She makes mistakes, big ones, very blurry on the mortality line to the point where I wasn't sure how this book could end well... I as hooked, in love and anxious and sad and frustrated... its a perfect example of the complexity of humans and the simplicity of romances... one of my favorites this year.

Emily Antoinette has created a fun world with Moonvale. I've enjoyed many of the outings in this world.
This is a lesser entry to me because it feels like a story that exists to get to the next spicy scene, rather than a cute romance that happens to have absurdly smutty sex scenes.
These books are extra spicy but I've always been able to enjoy the characters and story at the center. Usually with the characters exploring some sort of kink but with love and safety and understanding at the heart of their relationship.
This felt like a penthouse letter.
I still enjoyed the characters and related very much to the MMC. But the story could have been better.
