Sydney, 1989. When a secret trunk belonging to her enigmatic mother is delivered, Olivia Bennet’s safe and predictable world is thrown into disarray.

Sydney, 1964. Amidst the vibrant backdrop of multicultural inner Sydney, Rosemary Benito plans to leave behind her painful past and embrace the freedom her new home offers.
While her exotic beauty attracts unwanted attention, if she works hard enough in her new country, Rosemary can become whatever—and whoever—she wants. She just has to make sure her old life doesn’t catch up with her.
Neither woman can change their pasts. But if they’re brave enough, they both have the power to determine their futures…
A poignant family saga full of love and loss that spans two generations. There’s Something About You, Olivia Bennet, reveals the tender bond between mother and daughter, the undeniable ties that bind generations together, and the importance of belonging.
Valerie lives in Brisbane, Australia with her husband and daughter, after moving from Sydney. She writes contemporary women’s fiction and romance fiction, as well as magical realism novellas and short stories. You will always find a novel and notebook filled with ideas and observations, tucked away in her handbag.
The story of Olivia Bennet and her migrant Italian mother Rosemary, set in Sydney in the 60s, and late eighties simultaneously, was such a treat to read.
Parts of the book I really enjoyed included: - the proxy bride and the migrant experience. - The 60’s fashion, Givenchy and Dior to name a few, sprinkled within the book, (appealed to my enthusiasm for beautiful clothes) - The many classic novels featured in the book. I loved that Olivia lived above a book shop, a reader’s dream! - Loved all the characters including Demi, and all of the other supporting cast. They were all so well written that, even a few weeks after finishing this beautiful book, they remain etched in my memory.
This would make a beautiful Christmas present for lovers of historical fiction with dual time lines.
Thank you Valerie for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC copy.
There's Something About You, Olivia Bennet, follows the lives of Olivia and Rosemary, two women bound by secrets and shared connections across generations. The balance between the past and present added depth to a very easy-to-read story. It was easy to get lost in the story and I particularly enjoyed the author's attention to historical detail. I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves dual timelines, richly drawn characters, and stories filled with heart.
Thanks to Valerie for the chance to read an advance copy of the book!
I was so lucky to be able to read There’s Something About You Olivia Bennet before the release date. This is a different genre than I would usually choose, and so was wondering how I would enjoy it. I truly loved it! It is such a wonderful tale, working between the 1960s and 1980s to weave a story about Olivia Bennet that kept me enthralled. I was able to envisage the scenery eg ‘Neutrality dominated and frowned upon bursts of colour from flowers in vases’ – I had to make a note of this phrase, as it describes a hospital so well I can almost smell the disinfectant!
I loved the story of Olivia Bennet, it really touched me so much, I couldn’t wait to find out what happened in the end. Thank you Valerie, your work is gold!
There’s Something About You, Olivia Bennet by Valerie G. Miller is a story about a young woman who feels guilty about her mother’s death (Rosemary). She has a lot of anxiety, works in a bookstore, and has a few friends.
When co-worker, Poppy, is late for story time, a handsome teacher named Sebastian steps in to help. Olivia is drawn to him but decides he could never care for her. Besides, he has Clare. I believe the author felt she was communicating Olivia feelings of her own self worth but at times it came across as whiny and immature. It seemed a little overdone for my taste. Sebastian continues to show up when needed. I thought he was going to be some creepy guy cause it was just too convenient.
Shortly after, Olivia learns family friend, Shirley, has died. I don’t remember much about this other than the estate was settled and Olivia now owns a house in Killcare. This also brings the delivery of a trunk with Olivia’s moms mementos. Olivia feels like she never knew her mother and decides to dig into the past to learn more. Through this journey of discovery, she overcomes some of her anxiety, shows courage in her quest and pieces together her mother’s past.
We are treated to a dual timeline so that we know what Rosemary’s life was like in the 1960’s.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a story involving a personal voyage of discovery.

Author Valerie Miller, has created an engaging narrative about two women - mother and daughter - and the circumstances that have shaped their lives. Rosemary’s story takes place in the sixties, when she escapes her upbringing in search of independence. Olivia’s continues in the late eighties, as she struggles to come to terms with her mothers past and devastating secrets. Both are searching for a version of themselves, that they can live with.
We are drawn into their respective journeys, as they face challenges head on, followed by the angst and heartbreak of first love and its consequences. Each is supported by a lovable cast of friends who are present to witness the highs and lows and add depth to this story.
The dual timelines are beautifully woven together, making it necessary to continue turning pages to uncover the answers that lie within. The past is brought to life with vivid descriptions and an accurate retelling of the times. A thoroughly enjoyable read, by an exciting new author.
Thanks to Valerie for a chance to read an ARC of the book.
I cried happy tears reading this one, it gave me all the best feelings! Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC, There's Something About You, Olivia Bennet is the perfect historical romance story!
I enjoyed the story of Rosemary, a Sicilian woman who dared to want more in life than an arranged marriage. And I equally enjoyed Olivia’s story, an orphan in search of family.
Both narratives touched a piece of my heart: The European immigrating to Australia, and the shy bookworm coming out of her shell.
Other things I loved! -Everything Sicilian, including Rosemary’s temper -Oliva, her love of books, and all the book references -The Greek best friend, Demi -The Italian words and phrases sprinkled throughout -All the love and romance
I absolutely enjoyed reading this beautiful dual timeline story which had me hooked from the first page.

A trunk shows up one day for Olivia, and in it comes secrets, stories, sadness, and so many questions.
In the 80’s we follow Olivia’s journey for answers of who her family are and learning the struggles her mother Rosemary endured over the years. With the help of Olivia’s love interest, Sebastian and her friends the story captured my heart and how desperate Olivia needed to know more. We see the struggle as Olivia uses alcohol at times to help her through difficult times, and her fears.
Throughout the book we get to see life for a very beautiful woman named Rosamaria (Rosemary) who in the 60’s migrated to Sydney from Italy as a “proxy bride” where she would start life over again. So much to learn about Rosemary and her life, her love and her struggles.
This was an absolute gem to read and highly recommend it to everyone.
A dual time-line novel filled with secrets to reveal, mysteries to uncover and continual twists and turns in the plot! Olivia has been on a life-long quest to discover the identity of her father: a quest that has led to tragedy and her withdrawal from leading a ‘normal’ or social life due to her secrets and her perceived disfigurement. When Olivia receives a trunk filled with her mother’s memorabilia of the times before her birth, she is even more determined to discover the mysteries of her past. Encouraged by her close friend, Demi, and with the help of Sebastian, a teacher who helps her during a crisis at the bookshop she manages, Olivia follows clues that take her on journeys in Australia and beyond, challenging her at each stage and helping her to overcome deep-rooted fears. Significant episodes related from Olivia’s mum, Rosemary’s point of view take this book to a new level, especially as her story is also told in dual time-line format! Ms Miller’s novel requires close attention to avoid losing threads of the intricate plot which occasionally resulted in me having to re-read a section. However, the subject matter is so captivating that readers will not want to stop until the last page is reached! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
There’s Something About You, Olivia Bennet is a beautifully woven tale that captivated me from the first page. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it all in one day! The dual narrative structure is masterfully done, revealing the deep emotional connection between Olivia and her mother, Rosemary. Set in two distinct timelines—Sydney in 1989 and 1964—it felt like I was unwrapping layers of secrets alongside Olivia, who is seeking answers about her father and her own sense of belonging.
Each discovery Olivia makes through her mother’s mysterious trunk is filled with intrigue, and I loved how the story shifted effortlessly between Rosemary’s past and Olivia’s present. The characters, especially Olivia’s supportive best friend Demi and the charming teacher Sebastian, added so much warmth to the journey.
The themes of love, loss, and the complexities of family ties are explored so beautifully, and by the end, I felt deeply connected to both Olivia and Rosemary. It’s a touching, emotional story that stayed with me long after I finished reading. If you enjoy historical fiction with heartfelt characters and gripping mysteries, this book is a must-read!
Thanks to Valarie for the chance to read an advance copy of the book.
From the first page I was hooked. It explains the name and the title and as a reader I was committed to the journey of finding out.
I loved the dual timelines and the historical richness and accuracy that the author weaved throughout the story. Olivia is broken, we learn, for good reasons, and part of her restoration is to find out more about her mother, who sadly died over a decade ago. Helping her are her friends and potential love interest, Sebastian, who Olivia holds at bay due to her fears and anxieties. We learn what shaped Olivia’s mother, and the sacrifices she had to make, and the tragedies that befell her. I did not appreciate how hard migration could be, or the concept of proxy brides!
The language was wonderful, and the descriptions of Sydney and Italy brought them to life in the 1960s and 1980s. Olivia’s mother has a dashing love interest - the wealthy Jack Emerson - and we are also drawn into that world of luxury and money.
I was invested in the characters and the stories and wanting to uncover all the secrets with Olivia, with twists and turns along the way!
I’m certain you’ll love this book too.
Thank you, Valerie, for the chance to read an advance copy of the book.
I was captivated from the first chapter, and intrigued by the third! I didn't want to stop reading; what happens next?
I thoroughly enjoyed the transitions between the two timelines. I never really thought about the negative effects of someone's beauty as it happened to Rosamaria; we usually see the glamorous aspect. As for Olivia, it was empowering to see her bloom like an opening flower 🌼 Their respective friends, shows the importance of a great support network to get them through their despair but also to be there for their triumphs.
As for those love scenes, not a good idea to read at work, between phone calls (call centre).
It brought back so many good memories; living in Sydney, and my Sicilian heritage.
Orazia's short appearance gave me goosebumps. Firstly, her unfortunate circumstance, and secondly, her name is the female version of my father, Orazio! My dad passed a few years ago, and it made me miss him.
This story has touched my soul in so many ways! It brought me closer to my Italian heritage, my relationship with my father, the continuing support from my mother, my own immigration story, the love interests of both women (the good, the bad and the ugly), the friendships, but most of all, hope for the future.
I have cried like a baby writing this review but I wouldn't change a thing!
Thank you, Valerie, for the chance to read an advance copy of the book.
This immersive dual-timeline historical fiction family saga truly draws you in.
"There’s Something About You, Olivia Bennet" wonderfully showcases the special bond between a mother and daughter, the amazing ties that connect different generations, and how important it is to feel like we belong.
I loved how the prologue explained Rosemary's choice of Olivia's name and the secrets she holds dear. The scenes set in Bertie's bookshop are described so vividly, making you feel like you're right there, surrounded by a fantastic collection of books. It's such a delightful read!
The trunk filled with secrets, mystery, and exciting revelations beautifully highlights Olivia's journey as she bravely overcomes her fears, with Sebastian's unwavering support bringing so much warmth to the story. I adored all the characters, especially the friendship between Marie and Rosemary. The inspiring quotes are sprinkled in little pieces of wisdom, and the author’s research is truly impressive. The author weaves a captivating tale that sparkles with a sense of enchantment.
I am drawn to historical fiction and learning about the past and then seeing how it plays out today.
The characters are expertly developed and quickly, you are heavily invested in their fortunes. The detailing of the history and the place and time in which they inhabit is spectacular.
The novel’s narratives crystallize flawlessly. Brilliantly combining imagery with a thought-provoking novel that will pull readers in.
It was so enjoyable to be taken on Olivia’s journey of discovery, and be transported into different snippets of time and in 20th century Sydney. I was eager to get back to my reading session each day and added in a few more as I grew more and more invested. I recommend this book - it reveals the sacrifice, resolve and resilience to achieve true understanding and acceptance of ‘self.’ Love it!
Loved reading There's Something About you Olivia Bennett - the characters were relatable and the duel timeline was engaging! The author cleverly wove my two favourite genres together to make a novel that kept me turning the pages! Hoping this is the first of many novels!
After the loss of her last remaining family member, Olivia Bennet is given a trunk containing items belonging to her mother, Rosemary, who passed away in tragic circumstances when Olivia was a teen. Never knowing about her mother’s heritage, or who her father was, Olivia finds clues in the trunk that force her to confront her own issues and discover secrets that change her world.

Highly recommended for readers of historical fiction that features secrets, immigrant stories, first love romance, and found family.
