Now he’s wandering the country, searching for a new purpose. It doesn’t take long. Carver discovers a woman named Naomi Downes hiding in the trunk of his car. She works for a US senator. And she claims to have evidence of murderous corruption.
Carver and Naomi must escape by any means necessary. Hounded by state police, private security, and bloodthirsty mercenaries, it’ll be a miracle if they make it out alive.
THOMAS FINCHAM holds a graduate degree in Economics. His travels throughout the world have given him an appreciation for other cultures and beliefs. He has lived in Africa, Asia, and North America. An avid reader of mysteries and thrillers, he decided to give writing a try. Several novels later, he can honestly say he has found his calling. He is married with two kids, and he lives in a hundred-year-old house. He is the author of LEE CALLAWAY series, the HYDER ALI series, the MARTIN RHODES series, and the ECHO ROSE series.
"The Hunting Fields" by Thomas Fincham, the inaugural 1st installment of the Ronan Carver series, published in 2025, delivers a pulse-pounding thriller that melds high-stakes action with intricate character dynamics. Narrated by John Eli Brewer, this audiobook immerses listeners in a relentless narrative that’s as gripping as it is thought-provoking. Fincham, a seasoned author known for series like Lee Callaway and Echo Rose, crafts a story that feels both familiar and fresh, centered on a former Navy SEAL navigating a treacherous landscape of moral ambiguity and danger.
The story follows Ronan Carver, a skilled but aimless ex-SEAL haunted by the loss of his girlfriend, Anna. Drifting through life in his Camaro, Ronan’s journey takes a sharp turn when he encounters a fugitive woman entangled with powerful enemies. What unfolds is a high-octane chase across desolate terrains, blending raw action with psychological depth. Fincham excels at pacing, weaving a narrative that’s relentless yet punctuated by moments of introspection. The plot thrives on its unpredictability - twists and turns keep listeners guessing, with betrayals and shifting alliances that challenge assumptions about who the “bad guys” are. The dynamic between Ronan and the fugitive is a highlight, crackling with tension and nuanced chemistry that elevates the story beyond a standard thriller.
John Eli Brewer’s narration is a standout, bringing grit and gravitas to the audiobook. His deep, resonant voice captures Ronan’s hardened exterior and inner turmoil with precision, while his ability to shift tones for secondary characters - particularly the enigmatic fugitive - adds layers to the storytelling. Brewer’s pacing matches the novel’s intensity, accelerating during action sequences and slowing for reflective moments, ensuring listeners remain hooked. His delivery of dialogue, especially in high-stakes confrontations, feels authentic, though occasional accents for minor characters can feel slightly forced. Nonetheless, his performance enhances the audiobook’s cinematic quality, making it feel like a blockbuster unfolding in your ears.
Thematically, "The Hunting Fields" explores purpose, redemption, and the cost of loyalty. Ronan, reminiscent of iconic loners like Jack Reacher, is compellingly flawed - a man wrestling with grief while confronting impossible situations. Fincham’s writing, fast-paced and believable, grounds the action in emotional stakes, making the thrills resonate. The novel borrows heavily from familiar tropes, but Fincham’s knack for crafting “impossible situations that work” and his vivid world-building set it apart. The book’s setting - a sprawling, desolate landscape - becomes a character in itself, amplifying the sense of isolation and urgency.
"The Hunting Fields" is a thrilling audiobook that combines Fincham’s storytelling prowess with Brewer’s dynamic narration. And Ronan Carver is a promising series lead for future books. Great listen for fans of action-packed thrillers with complex characters.
I really liked this book, and Fincham's writing style, fast paced and thought provoking. It was all believable and fast paced. I'll read another for sure
Just average for me. Former Navy Seal Ronan Carver is driving back roads in his Camaro just avoiding life after girlfriend Anna died (not really explained beyond that), needs gas and a fix of his fuel injection line. After leaving the garage, he's stopped by nerdy Deputy Gibbs who asks to check the trunk. Little did Carver know there was something placed there in the garage.
This leads to a chase (Carver may or may not be wanted by the FBI-he's not sure) but he's not taking a chance. Treks through mud, rivers, fields etc evading cops, corrupt politicans and mercenaries leads to the obvious good guy wins conclusion.
I have read all the Jo Pullinger novels and they were wonderful. I really love this Ronan character! I'm so glad that Thomas Fincham wrote novels with Ronan as the main character. As I read the last No Pullinger novel I thought the Ronan character had more of a story that I wanted to read! I really enjoyed this story. The characters are likeable and believable. I also enjoyed reading about the beautiful scenery in that area of the country. I've never been to Idaho or Nebraska. It sounds picturesque, with small town tucked back in the hills and valleys. The storyline was very exciting. I'm looking forward to reading the next Ronan novel.
This story reminded me of a another series about exp military people who are drifters and go about helping people with their skills. The amount of knowledge and skill of these individuals is amazing. Although this is a book of fiction, I think some of the knowledge comes thro in the book. Very engaging right off the bat, thro to the last page. This is a good one
Ronan Carver is the hero in this fast paced, action packed novel. As one of the main characters, Carver is bold, polished and polite, in spite of his massive body and strength! The story starts with one, not so innocent conflict, which then creates a superb combination of many. Carved is a strong character, in mind, body and soul. THE HUNTING FIELDS will not disappoint. I really enjoyed this well written story.
Good read great new character. Carver finds himself in an unusual situation, a woman hiding in the trunk of his car is being pursued by not only the leader of the state police, but also a senator and the Vice President. Question is why. The pursuit takes them through fields and waterways and ends in a complex standoff. ENJOY!
From a peripheral role helping the FBI to a well earned spot starring in The Hunting Fields, Ronan Carver has carved out a spot in his very own series. Can't wait for Book 2.
Looks like this will be another homerun of a series for Thomas Fincham. If nothing else it looks to be very action packed, thrill seekers dream full of questionable people and one lone very dedicated ex-Navy Seal. Looking forward to the next edition.
Absolutely loved this book that I came across by accident. Full of tension, excitement, adventure and impossible situations that work. I really love this character. Well done Mr Thomas Fincham. You did it again.
This was an exciting book. At first I couldn't remember Ronan but it came back quickly and boy what a read. Thank you do much for writing this thriller. It was food good. I recommend that everyone reads this book.
If you want to read a book that is full of excitement, action, and thrills just pick anything that Thomas Fincham has written. This is a story about a wild and exciting ride by two individuals trying to do what is right or are they. Read and enjoy.
This book is well writen. Like James Patterson no words you have to look up. Lots of action all through and all procedures are be!ievable though in real life not usual. Who wouldn't believe a politician corrupt. If the rest of the series is like this I want go read them.
Wow, an action packed story with more twists and turns than a mountain road. Filled with intrigue, corruption and the actions of an ex army seal. Well worth a read.
Reacher: copied and pasted by Thomas Fincham. Everything, from Ronan’s character and the premise, are a hodgepodge of elements taken from other authors, thrown into a blender, and served to the reader with zero attempt made to do anything original with said elements in an effort to set it apart.
An awesome read, full of drama and intrigue, action and adventure, and lots of twists. Brilliant book and I love the new character. Can’t wait for his next story!
Most enjoyable first novel. Good character, reminiscent of Reacher. Looking forward to further adventures with Carver and company. Thanks for a good read.
This was a great book after you got more into the story, then you didn't want to put it down. The characters are very interesting, especially the lead, Ronan Carver. Have to wait for #2, till end of March but I will for sure be getting it.
