In addition to covering all the basics, this book provides numerous tips and tricks on such subjects as how to prevent the cork from breaking when opening a bottle; what the experts have to say about chilling and warming wines; how to hold a Champagne bottle to prevent spillage; how to store wine even if you live in a small apartment, and much more.

The wonderfully knowledgeable text is illustrated with more than 200 illustrations, including inspiring images specially commissioned for the book and step-by-step photos and drawings. Rounding out the information are a glossary of wine terms and a guide to Web sites. This was the right wine book for me. I received it as a gift. I'm not an oenophile. I have never had any appreciation for the 'art' of wine. It was a great 10,000 foot fly over of the wine lovers practices and thoughts.
It's basically a picture book with short paragraphs. I liked the fact that it avoided being preachy. Wine lovers seem like a group that is very clubby and irrationally passionate. This book was not. The tone was that of an assembly manual for a mid-range chest of drawers.
What I missed, and was left looking for, was some sort of primer on the wines themselves. This skipped all that, assuming, I suppose, that you already had the habit and were interested in the peripherals.
Like it or not I bought a bottle of red wine to go with my pizza tonight and I'll try to put it in the correct glass and hold it appropriately and try to taste it (rather than drink it).
Cheers,
C-,
