About the author
Neil Lancaster
16 books475 followersNeil was born in Liverpool in the 1960s. He recently left the Metropolitan Police where he served for over twenty-five years, predominantly as a detective, leading and conducting investigations into some of the most serious criminals across the UK and beyond.
Neil acted as a surveillance and covert policing specialist, using all types of techniques to arrest and prosecute drug dealers, human traffickers, fraudsters, and murderers. During his career, he successfully prosecuted several wealthy and corrupt members of the legal profession who were involved in organised immigration crime. These prosecutions led to jail sentences, multi-million pound asset confiscations and disbarments.
Since retiring from the Metropolitan Police, Neil has relocated to the Scottish Highlands with his wife and son, where he mixes freelance investigations with writing.

Book #5 in the DS Max Craigie series, and it’s certainly lost none of its appeal.
Six years ago Polish sex worker, Beata Dabrowski met up with her lover in a Glasgow hotel and then simply disappeared.
In the present day, DS Craigie and his team are once more involved with the Hardie crime family. Hardmen Davie and Frankie Hardie are both serving prison sentences, but Davie has something he wants to share with the police - he says he wasn’t responsible for Beata’s death, but he knows where her body can be found, however, he demands that he receives a shorter term in a cushier prison in return for leading police to the location. The day dawns when the mission to locate Beata’s body is to go ahead, but it’s unexpectedly high jacked by persons unknown, it’s a violent attack, and Craigie and his crew are drafted onto the case - a case that will be long, dangerous, but totally gripping for the reader.
Neil Lancaster really knows how to create an elaborately involving storyline and skilfully combines the multi-layered elements to create an electrifying climax. DS Craigie, and his colleagues, DI Ross Fraser, DC Janie Calder and ex MI5 (and blunt talking) Yorkshireman, Barney, provide the reader with much witty banter, which helps create a more light hearted and amusing backdrop to alleviate the seriousness of the crimes they’re dealing with. Devil May Be.
The fifth outing for DS Max Craigie and still going strong!
I’m challenged to find the right words to express how much I love this series. Max Craigie of Scotland Police and his co-workers are tasked with solving a multiple and complicated murder scheme and even more corruption in this latest installment.
In addition, his boss DI Ross Frazier is at his no holes barred best with his potty mouth repartee as he both chastises and praises his colleagues and even superiors. It’s full throttle and often with a donut in his mouth and sugar coating his lips.
For me, this is a highlight of the Max Craigie books. I can’t think of another author bringing me such mirth as the dry and sardonic wit displayed by both conversation and description of Ross’s character. Liberal use of regional Scottish vernacular and off color slang are a constant presence in his speech causing a frequent snicker or outright laugh.
Just imagining his portly midsection straining the buttons on his shirt makes me smile as he’s kind of a mess in some respects. But he gets things done when it counts and the books are so much fun because of him.
The two remaining Hardies return plus a lively crew of motley miscreants with varying levels of debauchery. They go about creating mayhem including the pile up of dead bodies which is a normal feature in every book of the series.
It was also great to see Max’s secret friend Bruce plus a newish character Barney who also provided some humor. I hope they return in future books.
Highly recommended and a favorite for the year.

The devils Max knows are the Hardie gang with leader Tam Junior still missing after a prison break. Tam’s brother Davie, also incarcerated, makes claims to his solicitor that he has information on a missing person case of sex worker Beata Dabrowski that is so explosive it will secure him a place in a less harsh prison than his current placement at Shotts. He refuses to allow his solicitor to divulge any information to Max so he makes a call to DCS Miles Wakefield who in turn approaches the new Deputy Chief Constable, the steely and ruthlessly efficient Louise Campbell. She agrees to allow an interview with Davie but will keep the “Police Standards Reassurance Team” led by the legendary tactful (not) DI Ross Fraser out of the equation. However, knowing the teams wiley ways how likely is it they’ll stay out of the loop? Let’s hope in Davie’s case that snitches don’t get stitches.
I absolutely love this series and the eager anticipation of starting a new Neil Lancaster is sky high and I can say with certainty that he doesn’t let his readers down. This is yet another cracking read that has me riveted from the start and that never lets up. One of the reasons for the enthusiasm for the series is the fantastic group of characters the author has created. Max and his partner DC Janie Calder are steady away, highly skilled and motivated and there’s terrific banter between them. Yorkshireman Barney, ex MI5 and on surveillance and Ross provide many laughs that helps to dilute some of the gritty darkness they encounter from the nefarious characters they are trying to unmask. All of them are extremely well portrayed so they spring to life from the pages. Things are never dull when this team are around. I love the tension you can cut with a knife in Ross’s encounters with Louise Campbell who has more than met her match there.
The plot is fast paced, it’s chock full of tension and suspense. I so enjoy that it starts in one place and then spins off in multiple directions and although it does get complex and convoluted it’s written with such clarity you never lose your way. There’s deep doo-doo all around, depths of wickedness and amoral behaviour with corruption that takes your breath away as the team use all their powers to root out the bad apples. There are some good cliffhangers at the end of chapters where I’m on tenterhooks wanting to know thus making it impossible to put the book down. My advice? Set yourself a block of time as this is a one sit read.
As ever, it’s entertaining, the settings are terrific and well utilised and I love the ultimate end. Can’t wait for number six.
This can be read as a standalone as the author does a good job of gap filling but to be honest you are missing out on a belter of a series.
Kudos Mr L, you’ve done it again and knocked it out of the park although since we’re in Scotland maybe a hole in one is more appropriate.

I was happy with this police procedural. It’s set in an around Glasgow, Edinburgh, and a bit in the Highlands. Fine as a standalone although it’s in the middle of a series. Good characters—maybe a few too many. The primary themes are corruption and old gang activity by a family that’s now either imprisoned or dead. There is some resemblance to Ian Rankin Rebus stories but it's more compact and less boozy misery.
The fact that the author is both ex-military and ex-policeman helps with believability. The reader does have to suffer through a lot of tactical information, if you don’t like that kind of stuff. On an e-reader the Scots slang is fun—there was plenty I had to look up. I’d consider the last 10% of the book a bit of a letdown but overall a good cop/thriller.

When the six year old cold case of Beata Dabrowski's death was reopened because Davie Hardie, one of the notorious Hardie gang, and currently in prison, wanted to do a deal, DS Max Craigie and his team were told in no uncertain terms to keep away from it. Max tried to tell them what could go wrong, but they wouldn't listen. And when everything did go wrong, Max, Ross, Janie, Norma and Barney were immediately brought in, told to run with it and flush out the perpetrators.
When it became obvious someone on the inside was leaking secrets, the team was even more determined. They worked together day and night, with little sleep. Bodies turned up, but still the evidence was mounting. Would they discover who was leading from the top?

Craigie is an excellent character, tough, determined and straight as a die, while Janie is full on support with lots of impressive skills. “The Devil You Know”, (book 5 of DS Max Craigie’s series), by Neil Lancaster

This was my first book by this author.
Although it can be read as a standalone I do think that I should have read the previous books, mostly for the characters’ development.
The writing is good, but repetitive in some parts.
The storytelling was a bit dry for me, and although the development was fast paced, it failed to captivate me. It wasn’t nail bitting, like some reviewers said, but it was not boring. I just did not connect with this work.
There are some gritty and gory, as well as over the top scenes, bodies piling up, leading to an explosive conclusion.
The story was a bit complex and convoluted, in my opinion, and plausibility was not a factor in this fictional story, but I quite enjoyed the dynamics between the team.
I must confess that I was ready to quit at 32%, but things did get better, especially the last 30% of the book.
And I learned a new word: querulous.
I do own the first two books in this series, so one of these days I will give them a try and perhaps revisit this one, after reading all 4.
There are plenty of 5 and 4 fabulous reviews, so please, don’t mind me.

The relationships and the camaraderie in the team and don’t forget the Turncock tea cakes. I couldn’t get enough of this storyline I read it in one day, way through the night. I will wait in anticipation for the next book in this fabulous series. 5 stars from me.

Neil Lancaster is genuinely one of my most reliable authors. Each time I read his novels, he delivers a cracking read.
This is book 5 in the DS Max Craigie series and, for me, the best yet. Although this could be read as a standalone, and the necessary gaps are filled in for those who haven't followed the series, I honestly think you would lose so much from not reading these in order.
It's hard to tell the synopsis of this one without giving away what happened in previous novels and I want to avoid spoilers for those who haven't read the full series.
All I will say is Craigie and the gang are once again facing up against the Hardie's, corrupt cops and many other obstacles as they try and uncover corruption at the highest levels.

Only good words for this book and series, if you want a solid stable and reliable series go for this one- you won’t be disappointed. I’ve been busy the last couple days and unable to spend a lot of time reading but everytime I pick up this book- I’m teleported back into the action and tense scenes. I’ve not been able to predict the plot and found that I’m always on my toes.
I think that this book can be read as a standalone (kinda) but I think the group dynamic will be hard to understand if you don’t have the history and back story of each character. Overall a good read, worth investing your time into!

I loved this nail biting thriller. It was such a a great story which started off with a bang and just kept going. A new author for me and I will be looking for more by him in the future.

Whilst this is the fifth in the DS Max Craigie series, this reads easily as a stand alone. The Devil You Know follows Max and his team trying to crack a brutal corruption case.
This book is absolutely jam packed with action, drama and some grizzly murder scenes. Its fast pace makes it an utter page turner! I really enjoyed it and fully got behind Max and his team. It got my blood pumping and heart racing in some of the scenes. I loved the descriptive nature and the humour peppered throughout (I think “you nugget” is now one of my favourite insults and had me chuckling). The suspense was great and I felt it was cleverly written and had a believable storyline.
My only criticism is that I’d have liked “The Ace” to have been a bit more of a central character. I felt like I was more “who?” than “whaaaaat?” when we found out who it was. It could have been a touch more of a jaw dropping moment.
Excellent series, would recommend. A solid four stars from me.

There are two reasons why Neil Lancaster's novels really stand out above others for me:
- His descriptions, although succinct, provoke images in my head so I can actually "see" what is happening,
- His endings are always like a grande finale on fireworks night, with fast action, several surprises and a satisfying conclusion.
DS Max Craigie #5, "The Devil You Know", is no exception. Highly recommended.

The Devil You Know is a Scottish police procedural by Neil Lancaster, and is the fifth book in the DS Max Craigie series. The plot revolves around a cold case from six years ago involving the disappearance of a woman named Beata Dabrowski. The case is reopened when an imprisoned gang boss, Davie Hardie, offers to reveal the location of her body and the identity of her killer in exchange for his being moved to a less harsh prison and a reduction of his sentence. From there, The Devil You Know is hang-on-to-your-seat-time!

wow when you read a book by this author you know you are in for a treat... its fast paced and its bloody... and the characters are still the same.... a elite team of investigators looking for corruption in the ranks of the police force they all serve
they only answer to a few people and are not well liked but they get the job done
when Davie Hardie wants to talk it sets up a chain of events that lead to a cold case and mole that has yet to be uncovered.... getting davie out of prison and where the suspected dead body is easy but its the chain of events after that have everyone scrambling
did i say this book was fast paced and bloody.... its one you cant put down either until you find out who the mole is and the ramifications of it all...
well written and cant wait to rejoin this team again when the next book comes out

I thank the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC of thi book in return for a fair review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and although the author does a great job of making it a standalone read, I am sure my enjoyment would have been greatly enhanced had I read the preceding 4 books in the series to which this appears to be a conclusion. The central characters are very well delineated and make a good central core to the book. The plot is clever and very satisfying. But i don't think I now want to go backwards so I look forwards to Neil Lancaster's next one - I have earmarked him as one to watch out for.

Good guys, bad guys and plenty of bodies all the parts of a great investigation.
This is a book that can be devoured in one sitting as you won’t be able to tear yourself away.
DS Max Craigie and team are great characters you will want to meet again in another book.

New author alert! And a new author that I’m going to have to keep reading more of. Despite being the fifth book of a series, I quickly slipped into this pacy police procedural and I really enjoyed the story. Now I need to find the other books to read more of the back story, as well as find out what happens to Max Craigie next.

Another great crime thriller from Neil Lancaster.
Max has history with the Hardies so when he hears that Davie Hardie wants to do a deal with the Police, Max is immediately suspicious. His new boss tells him that Hardie has specifically said he is not to be involved so Max grudgingly takes a step back.
Barney is keeping an eye on things though and when his drone spots something concerning, he lets Max and Janie know.
Max and Janie are soon asked to help when things go spectacularly wrong.
Ross is on hand with his usual wit and charm and the team soon have their hands full trying to find the leak in the teams involved in this matter.
There’s a great dynamic between Max, Janie and Ross and it really makes this crime series stand out.
I highly recommend this series.

I enjoyed the way this book amped up as the story came to a conclusion. My only criticism is that the main conclusion came too early before the end and then the story petered out a little.

A very clever plot that kept my interest from start to finish. The characters are believable and although this is the 5th in the series it could easily be read as a standalone book, although personally I like to read them in order. All in a cracking read.

This was yet another brilliant book in the Max Craigie series, one of my must read series to be honest. This time they’re specifically excluded from a case involving one of the Hardie brothers trying to cooperate with police Scotland however when they find out about it thanks to Max’s source they’re instantly suspicious. Although there are mentions of their lives outside work, especially in Max’s case, this seems to focus more on the job this time and with a new ambitious DCC who doesn’t see the need for their team at all they’re not just fighting the criminals but one of their bosses too which made for interesting politics. As ever the main perpetrator’s identity is well concealed and an interesting revelation and the action includes brilliantly controversial tactics. Although this is part of a series it could be read as a standalone (although personally I think you’d be missing out on a great series) as it doesn’t have any hard to explain backstory. Can’t wait to find out what’s instore for Max and the team next.

Six years ago, a woman went missing and with no leads, it turned into a cold case. Now, one of the Hardie brothers wants out of Shotts prison into an open facility, and he reckons what he knows about the missing woman is his ticket to more freedom. When the mission to locate her body is hijacked, Max Craigie and his team are pulled in to take over; someone is selling secrets and it needs to stop.
This series is always excellent, and this one is no different. It is littered with humour in between what are some very serious scenes. I completely fell for the red herring, convinced I knew who the guilty party was and proved wrong (again), but it was a thrilling read from beginning to end. Cleverly crafted with an amazing storyline and terrific characters, this is a series I love so much that I bought one of the books for my husband at Christmas. Very highly recommended and so very easily meriting all five shiny stars. Can hardly wait for the next one!!

A polish woman has been missing for six years. Davies Hardie has information that can lead to her body being found, but he attaches conditions for leading them to her whereabouts. He wants to move prisonsOne.of the conditions is that Craigie must not get involved.
Things do not go according to plan, and there are repercussions.
DS Craigie is brought in with the team to sort out the mess. There is corruption within the force. Who is feeding Droopy information?
Action packed, full of drama and heart-stopping moments. Lancaster certainly knows how to wratch up the tension.
It was great being back with Max, Jamie, Ross,Barney, and Norma.
Roll on number six.

This is book 5 for DS Max Craigie and the team set in the magnificent Highlands. Neil is the master of plot twists, suspense and writes a cracking rollercoaster of a book! I feel as if I'm meeting up with old friends for a wee dram and a natter! As you get further into the story, it is fast paced with lots of momentum, which builds up to a tremendous conclusion! As for the villain, I had no clue of the identity. I loved the references in to how to make Yorkshire Tea as strong as builder's brew and the bribing with Tunnocks goodies!! I will be recommending this book to fellow readers. I look forward to a book 6 as this series is getting better and better!

Glad I did.
Thr writing style made it easy to follow, easy to like Max and his gang, and not feel like I'd missed out on not reading thr previous books.
Plenty of bodies to keep us all busy, and a book that deserves the praise it's getting.
I will be looking out for more Lancaster in the future!

Another excellent book in the DS Cragie series. Although it helps if you have read the previous books, you can certainly read this as a standalone.
A great storyline that keeps you intrieged right throughout the book and characters you get into right from the off. Definitely a book to highly recommend!

Another good story with Max and the Team in Police Scotland! Sniffing out and extinguishing corruption throughout law enforcement!! This series is relatively unnerving because it's realistic and everyone knows that corruption within law enforcement is real, so it plays on genuine concerns and fears to grip the reader, whilst also having comedy, wit, intelligent writing and interesting characters.
There are no unnecessary twists and turns for shock appeal or any of that nonsense. Just good old-fashioned intrigue and mystery and thrill.
I love the continued appearances of characters throughout the series out with the main team and the overarching stories that join them all together.
The use of language and colloquialisms makes me smile!
"Ach awa' and bile your heids, you bunch of fannies" being my particular favourite in this book!! Scottish really is a beautiful language!!

This was a welcome return to DS Max Craigie and team as they investigate another brutal murder and try to untangle a web of lies and deception. This features the Hardie brothers as well as more suspected police corruption and it kept me guessing throughout. The book was fast paced and well plotted, with a host of well rounded characters. As with previous books in this series, this was a gritty and tense read and I absolutely loved it. A really compelling read which left me wanting more. This author proves time again what a master he is in this genre. Always engaging, plenty of intrigue and a fast paced plot with lots of twists to keep you guessing. Absolutely superb book and I can't wait for the next. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the opportunity to read.
