Juliette Aristides is probably everything I wish I had in a professor in undergrad. The vast majority of my time was spent 'completing assignments'. We were taught little to no skills and we had little to no help cultivating our own ideas. I agree that what we most need now is the revival of teaching and learning skills. To that end her books have become essential for those of us who don't have the time or money to attend an atelier.
This book in particular shifts towards the mindset of an artist; a creative thinker and problem solver. She puts down in words the exact fleeting feeling I've felt since I was a kid (I don't really know how to describe it but sometimes a place/time/moment/experience just sucks you in and hyper focuses all of your senses) and strive to find again and gives actionable steps to practice thinking and experiencing our world like an artist. To me this book is essential alongside her others in a wonderfully complimentary way.
(my apologies to the few professors I had who did take the time to teach)
The Inner Life of The Artist : Conversations from the Atelier by Juliette Aristides She is a stunning artist an amazing teacher and accomplished writer. In this book you will find short, deep, thoughtful and personal essays. If you’re an artist you will find solace and inspiration. If you think you want to become an artist, you will see you already are one. If you are curious about the artists mind you will be welcomed to the club. You will appreciate art, life around you and of being a human a little more. A beautiful book, to touch and see. I want to read it again and again. There are simple interesting thought provoking exercises. I particularly liked the labyrinth piece -it relates to many different aspects of life. The images Juliette has carefully chosen from a wide variety of artists over hundreds of years, many contemporary, are eerily appropriate for the essays. I will have it nearby to pick up any time I want a break from the outside world that sneaks in to occupy my mind. If you are so inclined search for images of her paintings; she is considered a Contemporary Master. Her paintings are fascinating and singular and always with a voice of recognition, evolving over time. You will find her website and a list of other books including instructional books and two of them printed as beautiful sketchbooks. Treasures.
I expected more insight, although those insights touched upon were meaningful. The art was beautiful (but it would have been nice to see credits alongside the pictures instead of having to page back to an appendix), the quotes and some of the text were memorable - but the book was too brief, containing much that I wish would’ve been explored in more depth.
This is a beautiful guide for the inner life of everyone. Juliette Aristides is always inspiring. I gobbled this up quickly while traveling in Europe this summer. I want to re-read it slowly and do the assignments.
Everyone that is an artist or even non artist should read this book to remember the importance of being present and appreciating life. Art does this. And in itself life is art.
