About the author

Toshikazu Kawaguchi (in Japanese: 川口 俊 和) was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1971. He formerly produced, directed and wrote for the theatrical group Sonic Snail. As a playwright, his works include COUPLE, Sunset Song, and Family Time. The novel Before the Coffee Gets Cold is adapted from a 1110 Productions play by Kawaguchi, which won the 10th Suginami Drama Festival grand prize.

jokes aside,
This isn't that bad of a story, but I have a grudge against this series. Things were being repeated so many times that I got bored with it. I don't even want to talk about THE RULES. The author repeated those same four rules about once every 15 pages.

This series is the perfect mix of a light dose of fantasy, and slice of life. The characters were not written to be perfect but to be loved. The series uses the element of being able to travel back in time to confront grief and grieving, and highlights how human beings are so inextricably linked to each other regardless of geographical proximity and mortality. The author also leaves behind easter eggs, to be discovered as one moves through the series. The books not being written in chronological order also gave me the experience of travelling through time which enhanced the time travelling element.

The number of characters and how they’re all linked may seem confusing at the start but there was no pressure to learn all of them at once as they slowly revealed themselves in their parts of the story when it’s time. It was a comfortable and cozy read that I’d recommend to anyone who’s feeling a little jaded about experiencing human relationships. Truly a series that I laughed and cried through, and thoroughly enjoyed.

I just finished vol. 3 and am starting the 4th one.

The style of writing is really simple, witch fits the vibe perfectly. I love that you could read any of the books, or even chapters without context and still enjoy it.

the only problem i had so far, was in the 3rd chapter of the 3dr book ("before the memories fade") where for the first time we have an disription of anything hat happenes real time outside of the caffe, witch for me was really mood killing.
