I had so much fun reading The Nephrite Knight. I was eager to find out what happened after book one, and book two did not disappoint.

We catch back up with Anthea after her time in the cave and get to see her find her footing among other humans. She really comes into her own in book two, and I felt like I understood her a lot better this time around. There are, once again, many unexpected turns, plot twists and beautiful writing.

Potential small spoilers ahead (but nothing crazy):

A.E. Asavi has a talent for bringing characters to life and adding small details that make a huge difference in the reading experience. My favorite detail that put a smile on my face was picturing Fyrlion being so comfortable and relaxed on horseback that he was able to pen a letter. Something about that detail made me appreciate the writing so much, and secured Fyrlion a place among my favorite characters.

I also loved getting to know Beldor’s character better in this book, and the addition of many new, complex characters also added to the reading experience. I loved everything about Ilona, and hope to see much more of her in the future. What a badass.

Anthea and Eldrion’s relationship is so complex and confounding. It was a wild ride watching their interactions unfold, and my emotions spanned the whole spectrum. As much angst as their fraught relationship causes, I love when a story can elicit all kinds of emotions. The writing is anything but one dimensional.

As always, I’ll be very much looking forward to the next installment!

Thank you for the arc!

I have been waiting for this book for some time, so I got really excited when I got it.

I really liked the plot and idea, but I didn’t really like the way the FMC was in book 1, and so I was a bit scared that she (or like the situation) wouldn’t change. But luckily, it was much better in book two.

And then there’s much more about the dragons, and I did have a little bit of an idea of what was going to happen, but then it just turned, and without spoiling too much, something pretty unexpected happens.

I learned a little bit more about Anthea, and while I really liked her character development, I did think Eldrion became a bit too much. I know there is an explanation for why, but I didn’t like how he acted.

And at last, a spoiler, but I had to add it:

Why did the end happen? I did expect something like that would happen, but why Beldor?! But seriously, I’m actually most sad because of Ilona.

Where to begin! I enjoyed this sequel & thought it was a decent follow up to the first book. However... There was a lot of baiting and relationship building across different pairings (or what felt like potential pairings) in book 1 that felt completely ditched in book 2. Book 2 was like "but what if Tamlin wins?", and proceeded with that. Overlooking the ending, we know how this will go in book 3. I think this was the most disappointing aspect for me. There was no drama or question anymore, it was as if nothing else had happened with anyone else. A little sad for the plot in my opinion (not to mention the obvious bad chemistry).

That aside, the plot felt okay. The pacing was off here or there, and occasionally it felt like we skipped the build up to something important happening, but otherwise the plot found itself again and kept rolling well enough. I always felt compelled to keep reading and finished it in decent time.

I am looking forward to book 3 to see where all this goes!
