Rachel Ryan was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. She can usually be found writing in coffee shops, hanging around libraries, or walking the streets of Dublin, making up stories.
Someone You Trust is a riveting nanny thriller/domestic suspense from the first page.
Running from her past, Amy becomes a nanny for a wealthy family in a remote location. Amy thinks it is the perfect opportunity to start anew; however, she quickly realizes the husband is not as kind he first presented. On top of that, they have a reclusive teenage son whom they never mentioned. Also, someone keeps drawing threatening graffiti in the tiny village.
This domestic suspense is a quick read and follows Amy’s pov in the past and present.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I didn’t know what to expect going in. It was compelling from the first page. I liked the deliberate way everything unfolded, finding out the details of Amy’s past and why she ran. Some parts may be a little OTT for some readers, but I found it engaging overall. I liked Amy’s character. Except for a few unwise decisions, she was easy to root for.
I will definitely read future books by this author. If you enjoy nanny thrillers, you’ll probably enjoy this one too.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada for providing a physical arc in exchange for an honest review.
The Woman Outside My Door was a surprise hit for me a couple of years ago, so I was intrigued to read Rachel Ryan’s new thriller, Someone You Trust.
Someone You Trust is a short thriller (272 pages) that centers around Amy, who accepts a live-in cleaner/nanny position for the Carroll family in West Cork. They seem to have the perfect home and family. However, the Carrolls and Amy are both hiding secrets from each other. When threatening messages are written in graffiti around the village, Amy begins to feel unsafe in this seemingly idyllic community. Is Amy just trading one bad situation for another? Can she escape her past before it is too late?
Trigger warning: This plot centers around extremely abusive relationships.
Alternating between the past and present, the reader learns the full plot though glimpses into Amy’s abusive past. Overall, I found it to be over the top, unnecessarily gory, and unbelievable. I did enjoy a few decent twists at the very end, but didn’t connect with Amy and the choices she made along the way.

Thank you to Edelweiss and Gallery Books for the ARC of Someone You Trust in exchange for an honest review.
I had an interesting reading experience with Someone You Trust. I settled in for a thriller and it did meet my expectations in that regard. What made the story somewhat unique though is the author incorporated a subject that I haven't come across very often in fiction. I'm walking a tightrope trying not to divulge too much info about the plot but her decision to branch off into that area brought something different to the table.
Amy has accepted a position as a housemaid/nanny for a wealthy couple. She will be living with the family in their big house in a remote area on the Irish Coast. I'm sure nothing out of the ordinary will happen once Amy moves in and starts working, right?
The pacing was good and with the book clocking in at just over 250 pages, it was a quick read. Initially, I was heavily invested in the present day storyline but Amy's backstory ended up becoming my primary focus. There's not many thrillers I would say are worthy of a deep discussion but this is one of those rare exceptions.
Having read two books by Rachel Ryan I give her a lot of credit for coming up with stories that aren't so run of the mill. Looking forward to seeing what she has in store in the future.
Thank you to Book Club Favorites Insiders for sending me an advance copy! All thoughts expressed are my honest opinion.
Amy O’Neill had a plan. The plan was to move from Dublin to Sea View to get a fresh start. She already landed a job as a live-in housekeeper/nanny. It was an opportunity she could not pass up. Especially since her room was huge and came with an ensuite. And the pay was on par with what she was expecting.
Working as a live in housekeeper for the Carrolls (Mike and June,) had its challenges. But Amy’s biggest challenge was Liam — a recluse teen and Mike’s son from a previous relationship. Liam had a troubled past. And Amy knew what having a troubled past was like. Amy had kept her life a secret from the Carrolls. But little did Amy know that the Carrolls had secrets of their own…
Someone You Trust turned out to be a page turner for me. The story unfolds between two timelines — past and present, which really made for a suspenseful novel. I couldn’t wait to read what each chapter would reveal. And like an onion, each chapter presented layer upon layer of details that brought everything together into a cohesive unit.
There are just a handful of characters, so it was easy to distinguish one from another. The primary characters were fleshed out to get a feel for their personalities and respective agendas. I didn’t quite care for any of the characters. But with all the secrets and lies, it was understandably so. In the end, however, there’s a breath of relief as the truths are revealed, redeeming the character flaws in the primary players. Five stars.
I recevied a DRC from Gallery Books through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
For someone hired to watch the kids and keep the house, Amy sure did very little of either.
This book is largely people arguing and bickering. Set in dual timelines (before and now), Amy takes a job as a live-in nanny while hiding away parts of her past. While staying in her employers house, strange things keep occurring in the neighborhood and with the family that makes Amy wonder what’s really going on.
Unfortunately, what sounds like an intriguing premise had some struggles executing and the ending was ridiculous and borderline silly to me (I may have rolled my eyes).
I received a free copy from a Goodreads' Giveaway in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book about a wife leaving an abustle relationship by escaping the city to nanny a family in rural Ireland. But mysterious things are happening there. Does she have to run again? The author did a great job I thought of inciting the real fear that the woman felt. Well written second novel.
This is a fast paced domestic thriller focused on Amy, who takes a job as a live-in nanny and house cleaner for a couple in rural Ireland. It becomes clear that Amy has chosen this job and location because she is hiding from something, and that the town and couple are not what they seem; all of this comes out through alternating past and present chapters.
There is some creepiness in this book around the graffiti that keeps showing up in various places within the small town and Amy’s general sense of unease that her employers aren’t all they seem to be. Some of the past-tense chapters gave me a feeling of being doomed to an unescapable situation and I felt empathy for Amy. That being said, there were also some decisions Amy made that made me roll my eyes a bit; I appreciated her moxie but also thought things would have been easier on her if she had made some better choices. I thought the ending was satisfying and was definitely surprised by how it all turned out.
Overall, this was a good book and a quick read with some good twists. I would recommend for those who like domestic suspense and mysteries. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a very quick, intriguing read. I’ll pretty much read any book where the main character is a live in helper of sort (nanny or cleaner or whatever) and this story was definitely a more unique take on that! At least, of the ones I have read. At just over 250 pages, this one won’t take you long to read.
When Amy finds a job in West Cork, she's more than happy to take it. She will be a cleaner/nanny for June and Miles Carroll. Their house is in a remote location but it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and it is beautiful. She's never stayed in such a nice home. After arriving, she's told that she's not just staying with them and their two young children but Miles' teenage son, Liam, will be staying with them as well. Amy's not really comfortable with that but needs this job. Shortly after starting the job, she discovers threatening messages spray painted in a nearby village. Amy thought she would be safe by running away from her past. But will her past catch up with her?
SOMEONE YOU TRUST was an interesting story. It started off really great. I was curious about why Amy had changed her name and why she kept relocating. The story is told in dual timelines and we get a look at Amy's past, starting from when she was just fourteen years old. I really felt bad for Amy. She suffered a great deal during her life. In the end, I was happy with the conclusion. I was given the answers I was looking for and not left to wonder what happened!
TW: Mental and physical abuse, drugs, and animal abuse.

* This book just knocked me right off my feet and into yesterday it hit me so hard! I was instantly engrossed and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to immerge myself into this fabulously dark and twisty story. It starts off strong, the middle stays strong and the end is just PERFECTION especially the very last page which literally had my jaw dropping to my chest! I have definitely officially added another author to my list of authors who’s books I’ll automatically buy without knowing what they’re about because this book was pure genius and I want more from Ryan. She clearly has a gift for writing stories that sink their hooks into you and have you compulsively turning the pages to find out what kind of mind boggling twist will happen next! I could go on and on and on but I’ll leave it at that and URGE you to just experience it for yourself! *Thank You Simon Schuster Canada for the ARC, this is no way changes or affects my review.
Rounded up from 4.5 stars! I won an ARC of this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I was excited because I had never read a thriller before, and after finishing Someone You Trust, I’ll definitely be reading more. It was practically impossible for me to pace myself as I read this book, because the end of each chapter had me wanting more. I particularly enjoyed coming up with theories surrounding certain plot points and being proven wrong with unexpected yet solid twists. I look forward to reading more works by Rachel Ryan in the future and encourage both thriller newbies and veterans alike to pick up a copy of Someone You Trust as soon as it’s out!
I did win this book on a Goodreads giveaway so Thank You to them for picking me as a winner. I won this book awhile good but am only getting to it now because there were a lot of books on my tbr when I won this book, now my tbr is a little better. Since I've put myself on a book buying ban.
A lot of people seem to be rating this book four stars , which I am glad but it was a very good and enjoyable read. I really enjoyed this book, it was very fast paced and I liked how short the book was. It was a very engaging read. This book has a lot of domestic violence while your reading it. It was a very intriguing read. I think I am going to try and read one of her other books that she has out already. Liam seems like a good kid and the dad was hard on him for no reason. You should trust your kid enough to know that he did not do it. I read this book in I think 2 days, which is very quick. If you like short books that are face paced and a thriller this is the book for you. I honestly did not expect that ending but I was happy with the outcome. The ending of this book I was very happy with, she got what she deserved.
4.0 stars. Page turner. At times this was very annoying with the abuse Amy tolerated from too many men. Her self esteem had been decimated. Very frustrating that she remained in the situations she did for as long as she did. A few characters you love to hate are included. Interesting though simply written. Did not expect the graffiti artist to be who it was. I don't have children so I can't relate to how she relates to her son. I enjoyed this enough to look at what else this author has written.
Received this from Goodreads. This one was a pleasant surprise. The main character Amy has to deal with two mysteries that involve her past and present days. I enjoyed both of them and didn't see either one coming, looking forward to reading more from this author!
Ugh. This was not a thriller. It's just a book about a woman with past trauma haunting her. Not even PTSD because she just has stalkers who keep abusing her. Disappointing read and i know not to look for more books by this author.

Amy has taken on the job as live-in nanny/cleaner for the Carolls. The Carroll's have two toddlers, a vast bank account, and a modern estate called Sea View to show for it. So, of course, it's a cushy position for Amy and she's over the moon. Until bits and pieces begin to surface that the Carrolls managed to conveniently leave out--their teenage son Liam, who lives in their home, who had trouble at home with his mom and therefore sent to Sea View, who has since been causing trouble in town, ANF may very well be trouble for Amy.
Past and present weave through this story as the plot and mystery unfold. They collide in an edge-of-your-seat explosion. Some of it I saw coming and some wad a total surprise. A darn good thriller; I was invested in the characters and the story from start to finish.
Amy flees her old life, changes her name and gets a job as a nanny/housekeeper in the tiny village of Knockrea in Ireland. Strange things start happening around the village and all suspicion seems to point at the family’s introverted teenage son. Can Amy keep the low profile she’s desperate for? More importantly, can Amy keep her secrets hidden?
Aww, I loved this. In a really heartbreaking way. Amy’s story is just so believable. The author does a really good job with her flashbacks and the “before” sections. Sensitive, and thought provoking at times, this book highlights the very real struggles of domestic abuse, whilst delivering a suspenseful thriller at the same time. The “Why didn’t you leave?” chapter was incredibly emotive, and left a lump in my throat.
Many thanks to NetGalley and publishers for my advanced copy.
“Someone You Trust” by Rachel Ryan is a thriller that follows Amy who is trying to escape her abusive relationship and the man who made her life hell. Her employment with the seemingly friendly and welcoming Carroll family gives her hope until strange things start to happen. Ryan cleverly weaves together an intricate plot with good twists and characters in this page-turner that will make you fully attentive until its conclusion. I found the ending of "Someone You Trust" to be somewhat flat, I guess I was hoping for more. While the story contains numerous twists and turns that keep the reader engaged throughout, the book lacked the intensity of a thriller with some illogical and strange twists. However, even if the ending is somewhat flat, the book is still engaging and satisfying.
Hard to put down, but another unrealistic plot. The then and now was clearly defined. I like that! Characters you’ll love to hate - I disliked them all. Beware, lots of physical abuse. Amy was a prolific enabler and the ending was a big let down.
I’ll read her other book.
Trivia - I can’t resist commenting on this. She uses the expression “drink the Kool-Aid”. In Jonestown the drink was actually called Flavor Aid- it was misnamed, probably by the press, so the more popular name stuck and has become the accepted phrase. Too bad for Kraft/Heinz!!
I could not put this book down! I started it in the early afternoon and finished before bed. Rachel Ryan managed to grab my attention immediately and my eyes stayed glued to the pages with rapt interest.
Someone You Trust is an ominous, character-driven thriller that introduces us to Amy, a young woman who, after fleeing Dublin for a quieter existence and a place to hide, quickly discovers that everything is not as perfect as it seems in the affluent home of the Carroll family she’s employed by, everyone has a secret to hide, and danger lurks around every corner.
The writing is crisp and edgy. The characters are anxious, secretive, and flawed. And the plot, using a back-and-forth style, is a menacing tale full of twists, turns, revelations, insecurities, lies, obsession, manipulation, domestic abuse, infidelity, troubled pasts, and familial dysfunction.
Overall, Someone You Trust is a tortuous, addictive, unnerving tale by Ryan that is deliciously relentless, surprising, deceptive, and bursting with misdirection.

This book didn’t go anywhere near the direction I expected.
I wasn’t expecting the twist in this one. It really did surprise me so kudos to the author for that.
I like books with a faster pace, this was more of a slow burn until the last 20% of the book. It the was perfect length for this story though. A lot of info packed into <300 pages.
It was fun trying to figure out what Amy was running from and what the deal was with Liam.
Overall, it was ok but I liked her other book The Woman Outside My Door much better.
I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway. This was the first book I’ve read by Rachel Ryan, so I had no pre-conceived notions of what the author brought to the table. I enjoyed the book and the twists and turns that coursed through the storyline. I had my suspicions as to who was behind several of the activities in the community and was pleased when the “whodunit” was revealed to be as I had suspected. It is a book that could easily be completed in one sitting, but I took my time to finish; well worth it.
This is the first book I’ve read by Rachel and it certainly kept me on my toes. I could have finished this book in one day but I didn’t want it to end so I read it slowly. The storyline was very interesting! I certainly wasn’t expecting the ending. I would definitely recommend this book! Looking forward to reading more books by Rachel! Thank you Gallery Books, Rachel Ryan and Netgalley for the ARC!
Someone You Trust is a book you need to read! It explores Amy's life flicking between past and present. She accepts a job as a live-in Nanny/Housekeeper for a family. When she arrives not all is as she expected. At first, I was riveted by her present life and all that was happening but ultimately it was her past that kept me reading and desperate to know more. A must read book that I would highly recommend. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC
