Was zum Geier.
The setup was interesting: Chihaya, born to a well-known actress and her manager husband, has been acting since he was very little. As a child, he met and befriended a silver-haired boy named Shion who was incredibly shy due to his "weird" appearance, which Chihaya insisted was beautiful. He dragged Shion to his manager father and got him a model contract, which meant the two of them grew up in the entertainment industry together.
At some point down the line - ages are all undisclosed - Shion made a move on Chihaya, then backed off when Chihaya told him no. Both of them have regretted that incident since then: Shion because he feels like he ruined things with the guy he's been in love with for most of his life, and Chihaya because Shion left for America right after and hasn't spoken to him since.
It turns out Shion wasn't fleeing because of the awkwardness, or because he's angry with Chihaya for turning him down...his mother was ill and he was taking care of her. (You would think, with Chihaya's father being Shion's manager, that he would know the true story, but maybe he just didn't tell his son.)
When Shion returns to Japan and picks his modeling contract back up, Chihaya abruptly decides to quit his own acting career. For...reasons? He says it's because he feels he's done all he's needed to, but it just feels like an excuse for the story to turn him into Shion's manager (despite having absolutely no experience in that role) and roommate.
There is some really good stuff, or at least things that could've been great, like Shion starting up an acting career himself, with Chihaya's support, and coming out publicly once they get caught embracing in public. But any attempts at plot are buried beneath attempts to make the story sexy, with a lot of misplaced scenes.
Shion treats Chihaya super coldly when he first returns, and Chihaya is startled and upset by how much of a jerk he seems to be now. This lasts until Chihaya takes him to a shirtless photoshoot, after which Shion pounces on Chihaya and initiates sex with him.
There was an interesting element there: Shion says, looking super upset, that he knows that Chihaya finds him physically attractive. He tells him later that he's in love with him and that he's sorry for rushing things, because he should've started with a confession and worked up to Chihaya accepting his feelings.
Which all would've been great if any of that had actually happened? They keep having sex, with Chihaya's main objection always being "but I'm your manager." What was the issue three years earlier, then, when he wasn't?? Eventually Chihaya admits that he's in love with Shion too, and everything is great, and his father and Shion's film director support their relationship, and the (straight romance) movie that Shion had starred in breaks box office records because of his coming out speech at the premiere.
All pretty unrealistic, and weirdly paced.
The worst part is that there's zero romantic development.
We're told, repeatedly, that these two are in love and that they have this incredible bond since their childhood. But we see none of it. There's a flashback to their first meeting, and to Chihaya introducing Shion to his father, and that's it. Where is the friendship? How did they interact for all those years when they had parallel careers? What led to them almost sleeping together that one day when Chihaya stopped it?
There's no chemistry, no buildup, and no consistency in their personalities or how they interact with each other. Chihaya initially had this fun, rough and tumble personality that pretty much disappeared once he started sleeping with Shion. And Shion seems to have no goals of his own other than being in love with Chihaya.
According to the author's note, this was their first manga, so I feel sort of bad about how critical I am of it...they were excited to publish it and share it with people! But it's just not written very well. They should've had a more engaged editor who could guide them down better storytelling paths.
Ich bin entsetzt!!! Was passiert hier?
I received a digital copy of this manga from Media Lab Public Relations for the purpose of a review.
This is quite the sexy BL manga with lots of steamy scenes amid a story filled with delayed love, regret, and the perils of living and working in the spotlight.
It’s been three years since model Shion left Chihaya suddenly and fled to America, after a night of dubious consent that would’ve crossed a line if Chihaya hadn’t stopped Shion from going further. There is some resentment Chihaya possesses after all of those years, as things were never resolved between the two.
Chihaya decides to quit acting after a long and relatively successful career that started in his childhood, and then suddenly, he learns Shion is back in Japan and that he’s been chosen (without being consulted) to be Shion’s new manager.
The expectation is that Chihaya works very closely with Shion–he’s even expected to move in with him!! The tension builds with this as the two are antagonistic towards each other at first, then their relationship becomes very, very physical. It turns out neither Chihaya nor Shion have forgotten about the rough night they had with each other three years prior–the thing readers have to wait for is whether or not they can come to terms with it and move beyond it. Especially when Shion expresses romantic feelings for Chihaya. The good news–it happens!
I thought it was a great scene–nice and calm amid all of the sex they were having. And everything felt genuine about it, too; even Chihaya’s response.
The next obstacle: fame. Paparazzi find Shion and Chihaya together alone and post photographs of the “steamy scene” they shared together, which could cost both their careers. Chihaya thought because they were both men, being alone with Shion wouldn’t matter, but not according to the press.
Shion was picked to star in a movie, a deal made with a director and secured by Chihaya, and the news could harm the film’s success. On opening night, Shion must decide how to play his cards to protect himself, Chihaya, and the people in the film industry who work with them.
I’m not going to share how that goes because I don’t want to spoil it, but suffice it to say it’s a very satisfactory choice that I think readers will like. And, as romance requires, regardless of the medium, the manga has an HEA.
I was torn with how to rate this manga at first. I thought that the physical scenes dominated the plot a little, but the more I write about the story in my review, the more I like it. I’m settling on four stars. And I really like Ikugao’s style and character designs, so I would pick up another manga by this artist in the future.
I think the best part of this manga is watching how these two lovers reconcile their past and support each other’s futures. It’s nice to see they’ve resolved an awful episode in their life and are ready to move forward, and how their feelings grow into something open and mutual. I hope you give this one a look!
🥲 As a debut work from the author it was not the strongest. Obviously, there was potential. THEY WORKED REALLY HARD ON THE SMUT. We got sexy times every chapter practically. XRAY SHOTS!! Uncensored wangs everywhere. We got some good ol' childhood friends to lovers trope. A reunion. Misunderstandings. Everything we could desire from a smutty bl.
Unfortunately, it needed some work on the actual story. It lacked a good flow. Emotionally, things were not hitting the right points. It felt like they were trying to do too much and needed to streamline it.
If you go into this manga knowing it is a smut vehicle and you want to look at some pretty art and xray shots, you'll probably have the right level of expectations to enjoy it.
I liked the plot but it suffered from having so much smut in the way. The artwork was also a little on the dark side for me but it was well done. I also liked seeing another entertainment BL manga.
