“… enthusiasm and a willingness to be corrupted …”

Lord Westbrook has been given a new mission to see who has been leaking government secrets to the French, understanding that he must do what is necessary to find and arrest the responsible party. He is sent to woo the youngest daughter of the Pelly’s and during so he finds that the older daughter intrigues him much more so with her mind and her wit. Miss Pelly is perfectly happy with her books, rather soaking up knowledge than dealing with the whims of her mother and sister. One night in the library Lord Westbrook comes across a certain book that tells of Miss Pelly’s desires and offers to help her understand the carnal transcripts more clearly.
“I assume you know what a phallus is? It has other names: cock, rod, sword, to mention but a few . In this particular illustration, the three men are filling the woman completely.”

Risking not only her own reputation but her family’s as well, she dives in and embraces each carnal delight that Lord Westbrook introduces to her. There are no promises of tomorrow, just right now but even that is too much temptation for them as the more time they spend with each other it is clear there is so much more under the surface. Hiding their true intentions from each other, they both have their loyalties tested when things begin to run amok in the Pelly Manor.

The First Sinners was such a treat, one that I truly enjoyed. It was a perfect introduction to the Sinner’s Club, learning about it's founders. Historical Romances for me are hit or miss, sometimes I get lost in the language of old, but this was easy to read and understand plus it was full of heat with a touch of mystery. Lord Westbrook is deliciously tempting and for that era, Miss Pelly was way ahead of her game, wanting to be more than just a Lord’s wife, she wanted partnership, she wanted her mind to be valued as much as her body. I must admit I went in thinking this was going to be about the first BDSM club, but it wasn’t or wasn’t just yet, LOL! One things for sure, I will definitely be reading the next book.

Years ago I actually collected this author's works in paperbacks so I decided to do a reread. This was a good start to the series more erotic historical fiction than anything else, it won't change romanceland but it was an interesting, short, sexy read

There's a lot I liked about this short prequel. I loved the atmosphere. The stately manor, in disrepair, on the rainy cliffs of Cornwall overlooking the crashing sea. Secret passageways and spies and smugglers. And lots of erotic moments between a bluestocking spinster and an exotic rake.

Since the whole story takes place over the course of a couple of days and a lot of (sex)action and intrigue is packed into it, I had to suspend my disbelief a bit and go with it. And I really liked it. It certainly got me on the hook for the rest of the series.

The First Sinner is not only a great example of fun and hot novella, but also one that has a surprisingly interesting and well developed relationships between the heroine and her hero.

Even in less than 100 pages there are heaps of chemistry between Faith and Ian. Add to that those special Kate Pearce made scorching hot sex scenes and you have yourself a pretty great short story.

Plus, it's a nice opening to a longer series.

Recommended for that hot historical romance fix!

It was a quick read and rather a good introduction of what to be expected with the rest in the series.

I liked the mystery and suspense but not the romance. It was dull and no chemistry between main characters.

Looking forward to read next book. Read on your own peril.

Not much backbone or story to fully involve ones interest. True to Pearce's style of writing the erotic aspect was steamy, however much was left to be desire.

Another one that pleasantly surprised me. Though I really liked the story, you do begin to see the formula in which this author writes with. It lacks the emotional depth of her older stories, and the erotica is tepid at best. However, I did enjoy this for what it was. And it was light, yet engaging and fast paced.

It started off fine, but just took a nose dive after around page 20. Just wasn't a fan of how little build up there was or how poorly the scenes were executed– there was a lot of potential that was missed.

I've read the first few books in Kate Pearce's House of Pleasure/Simply series (up to Simply Insatiable) and I was impressed with how Kate Pearce mixed the erotic elements to the historical romance story, especially in the earlier books in the series. When I discovered that the author was embarking on a new series, The Sinners Club, I was curious by how Pearce would write a spy series --

The First Sinners is an e-novella that details how The Sinners Club came to be. Ian, Earl of Westbrook, works as an undercover agent for the Crown and he has been assigned to uncover an information network between English peers and the French. Ian becomes a houseguest at Pelly Manor, pretending to court the younger, more beautiful Pelly daughter, Margaret -- but it is the older sister, Faith who truly catches Ian's interest.

Pearce portrays the two sisters in such contrasting manner: one, a bookish bluestocking and the other a social climbing, title-hungry beauty, which struck me as quite a conventional romance device. It wasn't much of a challenge for the hero to prefer Faith over her sister Margaret -- but this is where the conventionality ends: there is more to Margaret than meets the eye and I would want to read more about her. She pretends to be shallow and stupid but she's actually quite clever and machinating. Like her sister, she can see right though Ian's pretense of courtship.

"...I suspect he came down here to avoid something in London rather than actually court me."
- loc 400

* * *

"Honor is for men. Women have to use what God have them."
- Margaret, loc 952

At every turn in the story, Kate Pearce demonstrates a fresh perspective in romance by challenging standards: I loved how Faith was so jaded and unimpressed by Ian's grand romantic gestures and how she appreciated more the honesty and forthrightness that he shows her.

"It doesn't look very safe," Miss Pelly observed.

He held out his hand to her. "Don't worry, I'll be with you the whole time."

"Which means we might both fall to our deaths," she muttered as she clambered across the crates toward him.
- loc 732

* * *

He held the candle high. "Do you want to take my hand?"

"I'd rather you use it to find your way, sir."
- loc 742

At 87 pages, I was surprised at how complete this story was: the idea of smuggling information from the coast of England to France isn't new but Pearce executes this part quite nicely. I appreciated it that the author didn't make the intrigue overly complicated and that she was able to resolve it in the length of her novella. Ian is in Cornwall to investigate, possibly out fellow peers are traitors to the Crown. His job becomes even more complicated when he becomes involved with Faith, who seems to be the most likely person involved in this treachery. Pearce narrates enough of everything and provides enough backstory that makes The First Sinners a satisfactory, quite fast-paced and very engrossing read.

This is a work of erotic historical romance, but, unlike her Simply series, the scenes in The First Sinners have been toned down a notch. Nevertheless, Pearce shows that she is a master of ... sizzle. It's amazing how well she writes sex!

Overall, this is an excellent start to the Sinners Club -- one that I'll definitely be following.

Miss Faith Pelly knew she could not complete with her sister's beauty. Faith was most happy with a book in hand and taking care of the family household. Faith was content that she would never marry. Ian Carmichael, Earl of Westbrook was sent to fish out a spy at the Petty Household. Ian was know as the Savage Rake and he known how to work his magic around a female. I really love this book. I could not help myself. I had to read it twice. I love the interaction between the main character. She intrigued him and he explored her curiosity. It was a great start of the series.

Great prequel to the series. I'm not a historical romance buff, but this definitely warmed me to the genre.

Great strong female lead, who wasn't completely naive. Male lead was likable and redeemed himself by the end of the story. I'm very interested in the rest of the series.

Oh and I want to read about them trying out the positions in that graphic book she was reading.

2nd reading: Loved this just as much as the first time in 2014. Such a hot and steamy short story.
There is a good plot amongst a lot of sex, and it is the set-up of the Sinners Club. 5☆

Smugglers or spies

Ian aka Earl of Westbrook has led a very hedonistic life as a rake and a spy! He is Indian and English so he's traveled at a very young age and seen how woman are treated! Faith is not the prettiest of the two sisters but she is the most adventurous and intelligent! She has met her match in Ian who is there to look for spys and not smugglers! Faith wants to protect her family it seems more than her country? Ian has grown tired of debauchery and sees something beyond beauty in Faith!
There is a lot of sex in this short novella far more than an innocent like Faith should know but she reads... a lot! Can there be a HEA when Faith has morals but is hesitant to wed or turn in her family!? Loyalty has a price!
Maybe it can be found in the sinners club?

Quick Read

It had a good amount of fast explicite sex. It had a minor mystery subplot with some not so much exciting danger. I did enjoy reading it but 4 stars I gav it are probably a stretch. The whole story went fast with not much substance to it. Were it not for the crazy sex there wouldn't have been much to the book. So if you don't want to read about sex find a different book.

Enjoyable start to a series

An enticing read for a rainy afternoon. Ian, a spymaster sent to the coast to hunt for a spy. Faith, a repressed young woman longing for more than the erotic drawings in her book. These two together are a well matched pair. Erotic, suspenseful, and quite enjoyable. I am compelled to read on to the next Sinners Club offering.

NOW THIS WAS A FUN STORY.

I absolutely fell in love with the Fist Sinners. It was fun and enjoyable. I especially like the short story format. It worked really well in this case. I was giggling and wiggling my toes at four o’clock in the morning because I just HAD to finish the book. It was THAT GOOD.

I kept reading this thinking, have I read this before? I don’t know still if I had or not. Maybe the storyline is just that basic? Regardless, it’s a good Kate Pearce short story of the Regency Romance bent. It is fairly explicit so read with caution.

She's a very forward thinking woman, expecting to be a spinster when Ian comes to ferret out who in her family is sending secrets to France. He catches her reading an erotic book, which leads to him giving her real life lessons. It's the prelude to the Sinners series

To be fair, the site I was on didn't explain that this was a prequel novella, I thought it was a first novel, but by golly it was so boring and quick moving. I didn't connect with the characters and their relationship felt rushed and fake. Bleh.

This book either needed to be longer with more character development or shorter with less characters and story. The twists were not thought-out enough for it to be surprising or interesting. But the sex scenes were well written, and it was a fast-paced read.
