Gateway: The Book of Wizards

Rate this book
Gateway is a vast, sprawling mega-city built by powerful wizards, with thousands of years of history as the cultural and economic center of The Known World. A wide array of people and beings from near and far flock to Gateway to benefit from its robust trade networks, intellectual institutions and powerful magical ley lines.

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. In recent times, the tide of progress has slid backwards. Extreme religious zealotry and authoritarianism, led by war hero-turned-self-proclaimed prophet Chancellor Gideon, are on the rise in Gateway. Unsanctioned magic is declared illegal. Prohibitive rules and regulations regarding sorcery are placed on all citizens — except for Gideon's cronies and wealthy benefactors — and an army of brutal inquisitors is unleashed on the magic-using public.

But despite the hardships, wizards (both professional and amateur) have begun to band together and stand up to the new normal. Much like the American Prohibition Era in your own world, the Magical Inquisition of Gateway has not stopped magic from happening altogether; it has just forced most magic to go underground. Sorcery continues to flourish in the darker corners of the city's maze-like streets and alleyways.

Gateway: The Book of Wizards is a collection of profiles and stories of those wizards who have either found themselves caught up in the resistance movement, or have become unwitting partners to it.

Honestly, this has to become a full fledged novel series or tabletop game! I love the different city districts to this giant country of Gateway. It tells the tales of famous (now infamous) wizards, witches, vampires, and oracles now persecuted if they don't restrain and practice limited magic designated by their government. Told from the records of an anonymous wizard/witch. Poslo Kreen, Ramus, Kristinna is that you? It has this strong political strife feeling to it with a potentially crazed Chancellor Gideon (okay that name is already a red flag for me) claiming godliness over all. Governing by council is now becoming a dictatorship here. A once thriving city now being restrained in very draconian grasp. I want to know more about the key players like Bethan Chandary, Count Olek, Kristinna Moraegh, Ramus, and Commander Davidius Koffman.
