After fleeing from her ex, with a suitcase and $52 to her name, Tracy is trying to rebuild her life in sunny San Diego. She got a job as a host and slowly started making friends, healing and learning to trust again. The unthinkable happens on the night all the girls convince her to go out on the town. The lights go out in the club and Tracy is in the bathroom's darkness.
Fenrik is on the run from his tribe for refusing to take the jarl’s daughter as his mate. He doesn’t know what the punishment for this disrespect will be, but he doubts he’ll make it out alive. He manages to make it to an out-of-the-way hunting cabin to shelter for the night, only to find Tracy, crumpled at the doorstep. Both of them are lost in the mountains of Snaerfire and are going to have to rely on each other to find their way.
(Fenrik's Fate is a prequel in the Abandoned on Niflheim series and can be read as a stand alone)
Jen has been reading for as long as she can remember. She used to get in trouble for reading Little House on the Prairie under her desk in elementary school.
Jen is married to a very polite Englishman she brought back as a souvenir from her college study abroad trip. She has identical twin mutants who make her question her sanity daily. When not writing, she enjoys reading about monster dick, napping, and watching soothing cooking shows.
She is a goth kid at heart and truly wishes she could wear platform combat boots and black nail polish on all occasions.
Jenifer Wood **ARC REVIEW ** As a prequel to her existing series, Jenifer Wood shares the perspective of two unsuspecting individuals, both battling their own obstacles thrust upon them in their lives. Tracy is just beginning her new life- new job, new place, and a new outlook on her own self worth. While her religious past still digs its claws in her heart, she is trying her best to move on. That is, until she gets knocked out in a dance club's women's bathroom and wakes up on an alien planet. Alone. In a bright pink mini dress. Enter: Fenrik the Orc.
**Semi- Spoiling review ahead!
+4/5 As a lover of monster romance, I hardly experience surprise most times. Imagine my surprise and fun confusion when our FML is knocked out cold in a women's bathroom of all places, abducted by aliens, only to have those same aliens dump her on a random planet because she was "too intoxicated". I laughed out loud! There were definite moments that I thought were refreshing, and as a realist, thought were just that: realistic.
Both FML and ML are running from something. Him, an unwelcome arranged marriage, and her an abusive past. There is nothing I hate more than miscommunication tropes and this book had NONE of it thankfully. That already gave it 3 stars in my opinion. The talk the characters had during their first night felt like, yeah you know what? I also would be FREAKING OUT and scrambling to understand how the hell I got onto a random planet only to meet a sexy green man I'd never seen before. Knowing too that Fenrik had no idea what an ID was or any human slang was also humorous. Throughout the book, there are some predictable moments, but if you are new to the monster romance genre as a whole, I would say this would be a great entry book to get you started. Humanoid male, size difference, generous lover and little to no high stakes within the book to be afraid of.
The content warnings for the religious trauma/content, totally relatable. Like I said, it's very easy to relate to being ashamed of your sexual thoughts/desires and we see throughout this book the contemplation our FML has regarding all her decisions. She doesn't overthink, but she's not immune to the spiraling thoughts that make her second guess her choices. Finally, when realizing she didn't need to answer to anybody, I too would say screw it. Or screw him. Both?
An easy read, able to finish in a day, and with a guaranteed happy ending. If you don't like pregnancy at the end, this might not be for you, but I was glad to enjoy a breezy read with minimal conflict.
This was my first read from Jenifer Wood and I loved it! I love Jen's take on Niflheim and the Nordic and Icelandic references throughout. She's really created an original world that I really love. Fenrik's Fate was such a fun read and a sweet read that nicely throws you into the world of Niflheim. I loved getting to follow Tracy and Fenrik as they became friends and then lovers. I love that this story started with an alien abduction before even getting to the monster romance. I loved the mixture of the two and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.
I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of Fenrik's Fate by Jenifer Wood, and it was such a cozy and heartfelt monster romance! While I usually go for monsters with a bit more bite and dominance, Fenrik’s kind, patient nature completely won me over. He’s the orc equivalent of a warm blanket on a cold day—comforting, safe, and unexpectedly swoon-worthy. The way he cared for Tracy and supported her through her past trauma had me smiling a lot.
Admittedly, I didn’t always vibe with Tracy’s POV—there were moments I wanted to shake her and say, “Girl, trust the orc!”—but by the end, I was cheering her on as she embraced the happiness she so deeply deserved. It’s the kind of story that leaves you warm and satisfied—especially with that well-earned HEA.
And the spice? Oh, that was next-level. Let’s just say Tracy’s stamina deserves its own medal! All in all, this was a lovely, swoon-worthy story that left me grinning and totally charmed by a considerate, cinnamon-roll orc.
⭐ARC REVIEW⭐ (4.5⭐) Tracy had to run, to save herself and the future she envisioned. What she didn't see was that the one night she decided to enjoy her new life she would be separated and taken somewhere she could never imagine. But it isn't all that bad when you wake up on another planet where your past can't follow you anymore. Fenrik is also running, for the hope that he will one day find the mate he is destined to be with not the one his people have chosen for him. When a woman in a strange pink dress arrives from the sky cold and alone, he feels that he must take care of her. So, in a small cabin on a planet far away Tracy gets to know Fenrik and his life while realizing maybe this is exactly where she was meant to fall. And Fenrik realizes he would do anything for this woman to make her smile. But will his community accept what they are or try to force them apart? A wonderful prequel that let's you see what a 90's girl would do in a extra-planar world!
Wholesome Orc romance with medium spice I received an ARC copy of Fenriks Fate to read. In my honest opinion I LOVED this story. Tracey dealing with religious trauma while on a whole new planet was such an interesting take in the alien abduction story line. Fenrik was a sweetheart from the beginning. Also who doesn’t love a strong protective love interest who follows BOUNDARIES! Their love story was wholesome with just the right amount of spice. I really liked Tracey’s unpacking and working through of religious trauma and how it pertains to sex and relationships. Looking forward to more of this world Jenifer Wood has crafted!
I fell in love with Steve and couldn’t wait to read about his parents, and I was not disappointed! Jenifer’s world is so much fun to visit and I really really loved Tracy conquering her past with Fenrik cheering her on by her side! And that spice WHEW 🥵🔥 absolutely loved this one!
As someone who grew up in a twisted version of purity culture, I can attest to how healing this book is. I loved how Tracy found the freedom to let go of the toxicity and find herself.
4/5 now this is my fav duo (and reminded me sm of the og couples from IPB (I need to pick up a ruby dixon book immediately)), they were so cute and sweet with each other!
Super easy to read, super cozy, and smutty 🥰😍. I love orcs, and Fenrick was no exception, he was everything 🔥
The story is "Feel Good" with a hurt/comfort vibe (since the heroine had a rough past, to say the least, so check trigger warnings) and I loved every bit. Can't wait for my paperback to arrive and join the other ones in my library 😌

This is an arc review. Thanks to the author for the advanced ebook copy 🙏💖
Firstly, let me just say THANK YOU to the author, Jenifer Wood, for selecting me to be part of the ARC team for this gem of a novel. I feel honored, and even though I got this book for free, I’m absolutely going to give my honest thoughts. And oh boy, these thoughts are FULL of love for this story….
So here's the gist: Fenrik. Our man is an orc. But not just any orc—he's the kind of orc you’d want to cuddle with, be tended to by, and maybe even bring home to your mom. Fenrik's been running from a forced marriage, so he’s out in the wilderness trying to live his best life enjoying some solitude.
Cue Tracy, who has also had a rough go of things. She’s escaped a miserable ex, extensive religious trauma, and has now been unceremoniously abducted by aliens—no big deal, right? I mean, it’s not like she was just trying to enjoy a quiet life in San Diego or anything. She's on a random planet with no idea what’s going on.
The chemistry between these two makes a habanero seem cool. But what I love even more than their scorching chemistry is the way they actually work through their personal traumas and build a trusting, beautiful relationship. Their journey is filled with healing, patience, and some seriously steamy moments.
This book is like the literary equivalent of a cozy blanket, wrapped around you while you sip some Earl Grey and forget about the outside world. The pacing is perfect for an easy, one-sitting read, and the romance gives you all those warm and fuzzy feelings.
It's got the perfect balance of sizzling heat and tender moments. So, if you’re into sweet, spicy, and a little bit of out-of-this-world romance, this is has to be your next read. Can’t wait to see what’s next!💚
—— THANK YOU @libraryofmaze and Jenifer Wood for this read! I won a giveaway and in the gift was a signed copy of FENRIK’S FATE 👗🏠🫶🏻 thank you :) ——
👗A traumatized ex cult member runs from her husband and strangely enough, is abducted by aliens, dropped onto a different planet, and left with nothing but the clothes on her back. 🏠 An esteemed hunter and Orc is on the run from his tribe - refusing to marry the tribe leaders daughter is a large punishment and insult to their family. Two souls, running from expectations and societal pressures find solace in doing the mundane together. 🍃💜
I honestly enjoyed this read a lot <3 I loved that the genuine gentle giant and tortured survivor found peace and love. Their union was a steadfast romantic journey :) I enjoyed the lore and fantasy of it all as well I’m totallyyy hoping to read more of the planet Niflheim 🍃🌲🍂🍃🌲🍂🍃🌲🍂🍃🌲🍂 Fenrik and Tracy are perfect for each other. Spice was definitely there LOL 🌶️😂 gotta be honest here, they were VERY compatible 😂😂😂 all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing a woman allowed to heal from a trauma that’s not talked about. Tracy was awesome and real and super cool. And a man giving her the space to heal and love in the way she needs to. FENRIK>>> he’s a king. No further questions :0
This novella/ prequel is my first introduction to the world of Niflheim, and I am happy to say that I'm hooked. 😊
The storytelling in this origin story is beautifully crafted, with lovingly developed characters and a fantastic representation of mental health. Check the trigger warnings as this one does touch on some heavy subjects.
Now, of course, this is a monster love story, and you will be getting some knotting, the one bed trope, and a very notable size difference between the two. The spice was very fun, but also passionate and super sweet. ❤️
Tracy is the kind of character I want to wrap into a huge hug and tell her how amazing she is. She's so strong, and I had so much love for her throughout the story. I love how human she felt, and even in times of insecurity and fear, she still held her head and stayed honest with herself. Especially with her freedoms emotionally and physically in mind. Speaking of honesty, my goodness is Fenrick, a king of green flags. I love his compassion and kindness. He's delicate, and his passionate feelings towards Tracy had me clutching my chest and kicking my feet in excitement. By the way, chefs kiss to this couples' communication skills. The author has a wonderful way of making these two share their fears and insecurities, their passions, and deepest thoughts in the best of ways. They are both healing in their own ways, and the support and listening they supply to each other had me melting.
I'm so happy I was allowed the opportunity to read this book as an ARC before its release. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.
Running from her husband and parents, Tracy feels safe for the first time in what seems like forever. She's going out with her new friends one night because she just wants to have a little fun. When the lights go out, she's taken, by what she doesn't know because she feels a needle and is knocked out. Fenrik is on the run from his tribe because he refused marriage to the Jarl's daughter. He doesn't want anything to do with the politics of being a tribe leader. He's a hunter and loves the simple life. Seeking refuge in a hunting cabin, he's awakened by a bright light from a silver disk in the sky. It leaves a small female behind, one like he's never seen before. She's beautiful. She wakes up accusing him but he stays calm, assuring her that she's safe Realizing that they're, for lack of a better word, stuck together, they figure it would be best if she stayed with him, for survival. They share they're life stories and soon in each other, they begin to see what it's like to be needed, gentle, taken care of, even to trust someone. And feel desire for someone. She's been raised repressed and unsatisfied for so long, can she dare explore with him? Can he show her how to let the embers of passion between them grow into a roaring flame? Can she finally be free to find herself? When he's forced to return to his tribe, will he also be forced to give up his mate? His Fiskas?
This prequel in the Abandoned on Niflheim series was originally a serial on Patreon. The story is a standalone but ties into the series, as it follows the parents from Steve’s Barmaid. I haven’t read the series yet and did not feel lost. While I anticipate that more world-building may be established in the other books, everything I needed to know was explained.
The human FMC is kidnapped from Earth by a mysterious alien race and dropped off on Niflheim. The MMC, an orc hunter, finds her abandoned in the woods. Both characters are running from difficulties in their lives, and they bond in a secluded cabin.
The spice was fun, and the story kept my interest. I did tire of the FMC’s backstory and how much she dwelled on her issues, though that may just be personal preference, as others might resonate with it. The MMC was incredibly sweet with her.
Overall, it’s a quick, fun read. If you already enjoy the series, I imagine it will be a great addition, and if you’re just starting, it offers a glimpse into the world. However, it may be best read after Steve’s Barmaid in publication order.

***I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Sweet, Spicy, and Full of Feels! I read this story as a serial on Jenifer Wood’s Patreon, and I was immediately drawn to both Tracy and Fenrik. What really makes Fenrik’s Fate shine is the characters. Fenrik’s Fate is a wonderful short prequel in the Abandoned on Niflheim series, but it totally works as a standalone too. This story dives into the backstory of Steve’s parents (yep, Steve from Steve’s Barmaid, Book #3!) and gives fans a fun chance to explore the roots of the series. It’s equal parts heartfelt and captivating, a perfect little gem for both new and those already familiar with this series. Even though it’s a short read, is packed with swoon-worthy moments and the signature spicy, heartfelt storytelling that Jenifer Wood fans know and love. There’s just enough world-building to tie it into the larger Abandoned on Niflheim series, but the real magic lies in Tracy and Fenrik’s story. If you’re already a fan of the series, this prequel will deepen your appreciation for the characters and their world. And if you’re new? It’s the perfect jumping-off point, a sweet, emotional, and spicy romance that’s impossible to put down!
Thank you Jenifer Wood for providing me with an ARC copy, all opinions are my own.
Ugh, this book gave me so many feels. So, let me just start by saying I LOVE Jen's books. I have read every single one, and will continue to read them as long as she continues to write. The way that she's able to convey her messages, address prior trauma, and give her characters the grace to grow from it, is the best.
Now, about the story. Tracy is a human that is trying to pick up the pieces of her life after fleeing from her over-religious husband and family. She's made some friends who are helping her come out of her shell, and on a night out, she's abducted and left on a strange planet (the reason why she's left is hilarious). When she wakes up to find Fenrik, who has been taking care of her since he discovered her. Fenrik is on the run from his tribe. After the Jarl, or chief of his tribe tries to pawn his daughter on Fenrik. He stops in one of the cabins, and happens to find Tracy after she's abandoned. From then on, the start with friendship, and trust that buds into more. Their relationship is so sweet, and warming. It gutted me reading the book because I knew after reading Steve's book how lost his father was after Tracy's passing, but I soaked this book up so fast.
I absolutely loved Fenrik’s Fate! Jenifer Woods has done it again with this fun, cozy romance about a woman abducted from Earth in the 80s and dropped onto a planet full of swoon- worthy orcs. Right from the start, I connected with the characters. Tracy and Fenrik are adorable. Their chemistry is effortless, and I loved watching them work through their challenges together. The world-building is fantastic without ever feeling overwhelming, and the writing has this easy flow that pulls you right in. It’s detailed and immersive, but the heart of the story is the relationship, which is even better when you have read the other books! As a huge fan of Jenifer Woods’ other books, I was so excited to get the chance to read Fenrik’s Fate early, and it completely lived up to my expectations. Honestly, once I finished, I couldn’t resist diving straight into fanart because I needed more of this story in my life. If you’re into cozy romances with a unique twist, likable characters, and a bit of whimsy, I can’t recommend this enough. It’s the kind of book that makes you feel good, and who doesn’t need that?
I absolutely fell in love with Steve in the previous book, Steve’s Barmaid, and this was an absolutely delight with his parents. I always love seeing female characters over come being oppressed sexually, especially by religion and expectations, and Tracy was a perfect example of it. She really faced her fears and did it at her own pace; it took years for her to finally be comfortable with even being a mother, which is ver realistic. She was such a real, wonderful example of overcoming trauma. And when my girl finally overcame it, she was insatiable which I loved as well!
I loved how protective but not overwhelming Fenrik was. He gave off some cozy and calm energy, just content to spend time with his woman and tend to her. He was so sweet to her and so understanding of what Tracy was going through. I really fell in love with him, which was a nice change from the other book he’s mentioned it. The spice was AMAZING, as I can always count on from Jenifer Wood! I loved how they both introduced each other to new things, that it wasn’t all one sided. I 100% recommend and think this is a great edition to the series as a whole!

Kinda bummed that it's a novella because I would love for this to be a full-length novel, but I'll take what I can.
Tracy ran from her past, and as she's now adjusting to her new life, she was abducted and dropped in a planet, Niflheim. She was rescued by an orc on a run, Fenrik and they developed a relationship.
I love going back to Niflheim and seeing Steve's parents and their love story.
Since this is a novella, the story's not that drawn out. I did love the relationship between Tracy and Fenrik. It was tentative reluctant friends to lovers and then, fated mates. It was so endearing to see.
However, I did question Fenrik attitude because he was just so perfect with no flaws whatsoever. He knows what to say exactly to Tracy from the start. There's no cultural clashing or even miscommunication in the story (I love that in other books, but since this is a orc-human relationship, I think there's something bound to happen). We did not really see his background as the story was more focused on Tracy's traumas and past so I wished we get to see him too.
Overall, I love Niflheim and I am so looking forward to going back to that world.
Fenrik’s Fate is the delightful origin story of Fenrik and Tracy, the parents of MMC Steve from Book 3 of the Abandoned on Niflheim series, Steve’s Barmaid. I had no idea of this when I read this story, and it was a wonderful surprise when I got to the epilogue of the book and saw that Fenrik and Tracy named their son Steve…that’s when the pieces of the puzzle clicked. But then since I’ve read Steve’s Barmaid, it made the book’s epilogue bittersweet as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue and the way the author took the time to build the trust and the relationship between the Fenrik and Tracy. The sex scenes were also super hot, and you could tell that there was genuine love between the two main characters. I loved the way Fenrik respected Tracy as an equal partner and didn’t push her regarding her decisions on intimacy, marriage/mating, and pregnancy/number of children. He served as such a stark, positive contrast to her first husband…it was no contest. The author made it very easy for Tracy and the reader to fall for Fenrik…I loved this story and highly recommend this read.

Fenrik was so patient with Tracy, he was just a big ole cinnamon roll with her. This book is a stand alone/prequel to the Abandoned on Niflheim series so I’ll definitely check out the rest of them. Also, Orcs don’t kiss which does make sense due to the tusks but this is the first Orc book I’ve read (I like orcs okay) where the Orc didn’t know what kissing was. It did make for some cute scenes/inner monologue with Fenrik.
As for Tracy I liked her in the beginning but then she did the one stereotypical thing women in these books do and I got irritated at her. (She was told to stay put, promised she would and then proceeded to not stay put and got into a small bit of trouble) However, she did bounce back from that and I liked her again by the end of it. Also, while I get why what took place in the epilogue needed to happen I kinda wish it didn’t. I wish Tracy hadn’t changed her mind but I do know that’s rare in romance books.
All in all it was a cute book and I’ve already got Steve’s Barmaid loaded into my kindle app.
Fenrick's Fate is a standalone novella, and is prequel to the Abandoned on Niflheim series and can be read at any point. Available February 4, 2025.
With $52 to her name, Tracy leaves her abusive ex & is starting new in San Francisco. Trying to rebuild her life & rebuild her trust. On the run from his tribe, for refusal to marry the Jarl's daughter, Fenrick knows he must hide. He doesn't know what the punishment will be for his disrespect, but he knows he won't make it out alive. Finding an old hunting cabin, he is set to rest for the night- until he sees some bright lights and a stranger dropped at his door.
This one was heavy & lovely at the same time. Check the trigger warnings Both MCs have a lot of work & a lot of trauma to heal from. They take their time to get to know each other & work hard on consent. They work through their hurt and find their comfort. Tracy & Fenrick need each other to survive, they being to appreciate how much.
Now that I've met the parents, I am excited to meet Steve & the rest of the Niflheim crew.
While this is a prequel to the Abandoned on Niflheim Series, this novella can 100% be read as a standalone. I had never read this series before and I was not lost whatsoever. This book tells the story of Steve’s parents, Fenrik and Tracy. Fenrik is so incredibly sweet to Tracy and took everything at her speed, with consent and great open communication. Yes, there’s spicy spice, but the plot was also quite enjoyable and the romance between the two main characters had a strong wholesome-feeling foundation. Read the content warnings, if a FMC dealing with a past with purity culture/religious trauma and patriarchy/domestic abuse is triggering, then this may not be for you. I believe the author dealt with the subject matter well while weaving together a sweet yet spicy romance.
4/5 🌶️ 4.75⭐️
Tropes, etc -monster x human romance -dual POV -knotting orc ween
The fact that both Fenrik and Tracy were running away to better themselves did bring me closer to them as I grew an emotional attachment to them both. The language barrier between Tracy and Fenrik was entertaining. It is in these situations that sometimes actions are easier than words.
The steam between Tracy and Fenrik was slow. Partly due to the language barrier and a big part due to Tracy's past relationship. It was not a good one and it really affected her. Fenrik understood Tracy's hesitates to moving too quickly and was kind about it. There are times through that I will admit that Tracy got on my nerves. When she learned that Fenrik was a nice guy and treated her kindly, instead of trusting him, she retreated back into herself a lot. I understand this a few times, but it did happen a lot.
I enjoyed this book. There were both funny and sweet moments to be found throughout this book. The spice is just right. Readers will fall in love with Fenrik and if you are not an Orc fan or this is your first time reading an Orc story, you will soon become a fan of Orcs.
Tracy’s out here trying to start fresh in San Diego after escaping an awful ex, but then BAM—she gets abducted by aliens and left behind on a random planet. Enter Fenrik, the gentle, soft, literally mountain of a Orc. This book was like a cozy blanket for my soul. Fenrik is such a sweetie, I didn’t even mind that he’s a monster (he’s not that kinda monster tho, he's more of the "chill, warm, orc boyfriend who just wants to protect you" type). The chemistry between Tracy and Fenrik hit me right in the feels . Their relationship is so wholesome and healing. Like, the way he’s patient and supportive of Tracy’s trauma made me smile for days. Plus, the whole getting lost in the mountains trope? Chef’s kiss.
It’s a super easy read that you can finish in one sitting, and honestly, who doesn’t love a guaranteed happy ending? I’m lowkey obsessed with this, and it’s a perfect pick if you want a soft monster romance with that "feeling safe and loved" energy.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
I was lucky enough to be able to get an advanced readers copy of this book.
Fenrik's fate is a fantastic low-stakes fantasy romance for any one else who is sick and tired of fantasy settings always ending up with a war.
This book contains a pregnancy in the epilouge, but I was very pleased to find it didn't bother me like a lot of others do. I am not someone who enjoys a pregnancy troupe normally and it was one of the things that made me nervous about this book. But it was very easy to read in this, and I didn't find myself bothered by it.
I found the relationship between the two characters very sweet, and was giggling at some of the critters on the planet. (Very earth comparable.) It did bother me just how much of their relationship was compared to Tracy's ex, as I don't think that's healthy in excess, but it wasn't so bad I didn't enjoy the read.
I have the book of their son on the way, and it is next on my list when it arrives.

I enjoyed the first book in the Abandoned on Niflheim series, "Agnarr's Jarlin," and paused reading "Steve's Barmaid" when I learned this prequel about his parents was in the works. And while I liked learning more of Steve's backstory, overall "Fenrik's Fate" felt pretty perfunctory to me. (Learning that this story was originally serialized on Patreon kind of explained that.) Each story beat progresses rapidly to the next, with barely any interior monologue for some pretty major things that happen to the characters (like, you know, being abducted by aliens or chased out of your tribe). There is little description of the setting or world building—I had to draw on what I remembered from "Agnarr's Jarlin." Fenrik also feels like a pretty basic human cinnamon roll rather than an alien with unique characteristics and cultural differences. In all, this feels more like a should-be-free bonus story than a full-fledged entry into the series.
✨ARC Review ✨ This was my first time reading a book from author Jenifer Wood and I’m so glad I found her! I have not read any of the other books in the series and I didn’t need to. However, now I want to read all the books. This story got me from the start! I wanted to know more and keep reading! I also enjoyed that the narrative was detailed and descriptive that I could easily imagine the story. I found the development of Fenrik and Tracy’s relationship sweet and believable in the context of the world that the author has created. I find reading more enjoyable when there is congruency in emotions and feelings in the characters no matter how outlandish the world is. And this book delivered! Fenrik and Tracy were authentic and relatable. The romance was sweet and the build-up to the 🔥🌶️ was orc worthy!
