I'm being hunted by mages and might get evicted soon. Things are actually looking up for me!
A lot has changed since I turned twenty-three and gained access to the Halls of Magic. Back then, I was stuck in a dead-end job, plagued by a metabolic disorder destined to put me in an early grave. Since accessing the Halls of Magic, I've discovered a cure for my condition, but only if I can unlock all five Aspects of magic.
Armed with a spellbook straight out of an RPG, a sarcastic feline familiar, and the adoration of two beautiful Aspects—who are still learning how to be human—I feel unstoppable. But the Halls aren’t as empty as we had thought. Really weird mages have claimed the wreckage of the Halls, and they’ve marked me as public enemy number one.
Between problems at my job, eviction threats from my landlord, and a lovecraftian horror who wants to dissect me, I really have my hands full. It's time to go on the offensive. It's time for War.
Welcome back to the Halls of Magic. It's fireball time, baby.
Volume 2 improves upon the first book in almost every way. The women in the story are given more character growth, and it's made more clear that they didn't just fall in love with the MC because he was the first man they ever met, which was a complaint I had in Volume 1. The lore is also expanded upon in interesting ways, with more plot tension and interesting drama unfolding. I felt more invested in seeing how the story played out and I'm actually really excited for Volume 3.
My biggest complaint, which is bad enough that I've knocked 1 star off the rating, is the amount of typos in the book. I'm not normally bothered by occasional typos, but they are plentiful in this book to the point where it's hard to even figure out what the author's original intent was in some places. There are also places where it seems 1 particular character had a different name in an earlier draft and the original name is still left in a couple of places. The afterword mentions there were beta readers and an editor so I'm not sure how so many typos made it through.
This was the second strong book to start this series.
The MC finds the Aspect of War, furthering their spell abilities. And along the way, strengthens their relationship with each of the three women. There personalities are diversely different, and there is actual discussion about the relationship dynamics, something rare in the genre.
More of the world is revealed that affects the MC and his ladies. It's a nice weaving of his real world and the magic halls he investigates.
So in this book, we learn that not all of the mages were killed in the great upheaval that sent the Halls of Magic to ruin. We still don't know exactly what forces caused it's destruction. However the different factions of mages aren't happy with what Jake is doing. When Jake communes with the one of the different aspects he frees them from their containment spheres. Their human form is that of a beautiful woman. There are five aspects: Protection, Nature, War, Darkness and Knowledge. The freeing of the aspects makes them unavailable for the new mages to use learn the spells that belong to each aspect. Thus the other mage families are very upset with what Jake is doing. Only they don't know that he is freeing them. Outside the Halls of magic, Jake works at a fitness gym. I like the creative use of names, they are like their real life counterparts but with a slight name change.
Jake has his hands full in this second book of over 630 pages. Dex, his magical index continues to provide plenty of snark. Serra and Vivienne help Jake in his goal -- keep his job, learn more magic in the shattered remains of the halls of magical repository, reach the other Aspects, avoid the killing beasts (shoggoths), avoid the hostile human mages, and find his mom, or at least what happened to her. I know this just came out, but... moah, plz! Above average editing.
Please. Please write number three. These are long and fun. I guess I would like to know how a collaboration works. I think I read enough authors to know their voices. Annabelle is particularly good with relationships. I often highlight different passages and then read the bookmarks as a separate thing. Very insightful. Wonderful touch. I wish you both the best of luck. Remember to write number three these characters are great.
Lot s of spell changing with new spell connecting experiments. New battles with multiple bad guy troops, Night Creatures and single family groups. The search for more Aspects continues as does Jake’s hope to find his mother. The mages who work for the bad guys are not as smart as Jake and his friends and are beginning to get very nervous. A good read and highly recommended.
Rowan's character develops slowly and relatively very true to her character. The reward system seems a little flawed, though. They are rewarded for the first encounter with a new monster, but after defeating the rest of the same monsters, there is no additional experience given. Overall, it's a great story!
Great world/relationship building and the action is well done as well. Can't wait to see what happens to Jake in the next book, definitely keeping an eye out for that one!
Really good world building and character development which I expect from these authors!!! The enemies and monsters make me snicker to much at times but otherwise a fun series to read!!!
Good story, i just wish the female voice narrator would stop talking like she just woke up from a long nap. Listening to someone who speaks at 70% normal speed constantly gets really really tiring after a while.
3.5 stars. I rounded up as the overall reading experience was pretty good, although I found that the story really only found its legs in the last 1/4 of this book. Good enough for me to hang in there for book 3 now that things are getting in gear.
