Sophie’s Ruin is a continuation of the Crimson and Shadows series, where alliances crumble, shadows deepen, and love is tested against insurmountable odds.

One will suffer, one will fight … all will burn.

Immediately following the events in Josephine’s Tear, a new world emerges where humans no longer rely on vampires for protection. Sophie and Henry stand at the forefront, determined to persuade the vampire clans to relinquish their grip on the country. Yet, when they challenge the established order, love becomes both—their greatest weapon and vulnerability.

When Henry is captured, Sophie must push her powers further than ever before. Her heart aches for Henry’s return while shadows lurk within her soul. In this battle against external foes and internal demons, she faces an agonizing choice: How far will she go to rescue him?

As darkness tempts her with promises of power, and vengeance simmers beneath her skin, Henry fears she's slipping away. With courage and love as their last hope, he will stop at nothing to reclaim their future together.

In this treacherous new world of deception and fear, what will prevail—the darkness...or the enduring spirit of love?

"Humanity still burned bright inside her. It was one of the things that drew me to her - that light."

My oh my, does this series take a turn. Josephine's Tear is a beautiful introduction to this series, the characters, and all the magic. Then, we are taken on this ride of emotions and action with Sophie's Ruin.

Book 2 continues right where the story ends in Josephine's Tear. I really enjoyed the darkness of this book. I was taken on an emotional adventure from the very start. We think the worst is over, but not exactly. Sophie and Henry have to deal with a bigger problem than the dark witches. Sophie's love and passion for Henry will either ignite her light from within, or she will succumb to the temptation of the darkness. There is a lot of raw emotion, angst, and a need for vengeance. And Henry. I was an emotional mess when it came to Henry. 🥺 We get a better understanding of the MMC and his past. I love the dual POV between Sophie and Henry. It makes this story flow, especially since the MCs are both going through such intense experiences, and we get to see both sides of the story. The flashbacks give a better understanding of the characters throughout the story as well, even the side characters.

What an enjoyable read. It definitely kept me intrigued and anxious to know more. V.I. Davis's creativity and writing are beautifully captivating. The Crimson and Shadows series is such a lovely paranormal fantasy read, and I found it so easy to follow and get lost in this world of vampires, witches, and humans. She has really taken it to the next level with Sophie's Ruin, and I can't wait to find out what happens next, especially with that epilogue. What a surprise!

A book that dares ask the question “would you still love me if I become consumed by revenge and bloodlust?” and I just think it’s perfect 😌

Sophie's Ruin was so brutally beautiful—I was enraptured with the intense personal conflicts, violent high-stakes, and tender moments 😭 just—wowie!!

Absolutely loved this sequel, perfectly continues the story and was a wild ride all the way through 🔥👏 (and my crush on Henry grew exponentially 😚)

As I got more into this story I feel there are even more similarities to The Vampire Diaries, but I seriously enjoyed reading it.

Sophie struggles with the boundary between darkness and light, doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. The power of love is immeasurable.

What a great sequel! This one was darker than Josephine’s Tear in such a delicious way! The angst, fear, sadness, love and unshakable need for revenge were woven beautifully!
I loved how Sophie really steps into her own in this book and owns who she is, who she is supposed to be and who she wants to be. Henry was just perfect and his emotions were palpable. His love and devotion to Sophie was *chef’s kiss!
The storyline kept me intrigued and on the edge of my seat. It was easy to get lost in this world and I just need more of it!

I wasn’t sure how this story was going to play out. I was very surprised with everything. In a good way because I loved it. This is a great sequel to Josephine’s Tear. There were moments that made me extremely mad and question things. Henry is such a green flag. He deserves all the praise honestly. There’s more spice in this book and that was a nice surprise. I’m ready for a third book now XD.

"Because eternity means nothing if I'm not with him," I said with a heavy sigh. "Because even if I die tomorrow, I would die happy and with no regrets, knowing that I'd spent the time I had by his side, loving him..."

I really enjoyed Josephine's Tear, but Sophie's Ruin upped the stakes and turned the dial to 10.

Sophie's Ruin picks up right where Josephine's Tear ended and immediately gets into the action of the story. This book gets DARK in places. Sophie has to fight through darkness and obstacles to get the ending she desires and it's a beautiful story.

At about 35% through, I couldn't put the book down. Sophie's character arc, her relationships, and friendships all are beautifully told. I loved the formation of family we see come together by the end.

I can't wait to see where we go for Henry's Salvation.

Bravo, V.I. Davis, bravo!

I don't know where to begin, even though I've had more than enough time to formulate my thoughts. "Sophie's Ruin" is the second installment in V.I. Davis's captivating series, which follows Sophie's journey after the events of "Josephine's Tear."

I was lucky enough to read "Sophie's Ruin" before its release date, and I must say, this book (and series) has the potential to be the next big thing. I know vampires may seem "so 2000s" to our generation, but V.I. Davis is bringing them back with a fresh twist.

The words flowed smoother than butter, and Davis's imagery was beautiful. One of the standout aspects of this book was Davis's use of the dream world to connect Sophie and Henry. It was well done, and she kept both characters relevant throughout.

She also improved upon the pacing issues present in "Josephine's Tear." Sophie's mission was kept at the forefront without persistently telling the reader about it. This approach felt more subtle and showed rather than told. The foreshadowing between Sophie and the darkness at the beginning was impressive. I loved how subtle it was and how it carried throughout the novel.

"I was losing him, losing us, losing myself... A heartbeat later, my hands slipped out of his grip."

"I might have been pulled into the darkness in my dream, but I knew that wouldn't stop Henry from coming for me."

And fight for Sophie, he did.

Henry's character grew on me tremendously in the novel. Although I enjoyed him in "Josephine's Tear," we finally learn more about him and see his vulnerabilities in book two. We learned so much about Henry in book two, and I think the different POVs were necessary for the book's success. Although I typically prefer one POV, Henry's POV was necessary for telling this story.

I also appreciated the increased action in this book. It kept the story moving and kept the reader on edge. A few scenes had me on the edge of my seat, and I nearly had a heart attack during one of them. If you read it, you know which one I'm talking about.

While I adored this book and can't wait for the third installment, I do have a few critiques. At times, Sophie's character development felt inconsistent, making it hard for me to relate to her. I understand the desire to save Henry, but considering the timeline of events, her actions felt a bit rushed. It's only been a few weeks, maybe months at best, since she volunteered for the Selection, defeated the Dark Witches, and fell for Henry.

I know it was probably the author’s intent to make Sophie a little bit insufferable during this time in the book, but I just wanted to slap the FMC and tell her to take a breather. While I found her personally annoying at parts, it made sense for how the storyline went. My inner desires just swayed my perception of Sophie’s actions because I didn’t want her to fall for the darkness. So honestly, bravo Davis.

Regardless, I fell hard for this couple. Their romance was hot, sensual, and made me wish I was marrying a 200-year-old vampire (sorry, Alec!).

"He was my compass, my anchor, my guiding light, even in the darkest hour."

I appreciated how Davis reversed the typical roles of the FMC and MMC. Instead of having our "shadow daddy," we got our "shadow momma." Plus, we saw the male tortured, not the FMC. She's the one who did the saving, and he's the one who was rescued. Even though at the end, we see a little bit of the reverse.

While I didn’t always agree with the FMC’s actions, I loved that Sophie went unhinged to get Henry back. I love that she wasn't the perfect FMC. It drove me crazy at some points, but I think it was well done by Davis.

"There was a pull, a tug in my blood, in my very bones that urged me to go to Henry, to find him."

The magical elements in this book were impressive. The white witch settlement was a nice touch, and some of my favorite scenes were when magic helped connect Sophie and Henry.

The dialogue in this novel was super realistic and added to the story. The slow moments between characters felt realistic, similar to a conversation I would have with a friend or partner.

"I couldn't walk in daylight, but as long as I had Sophie in my life, I had my own personal sunshine."

This quote was ironic in more than one way: Sophie was battling the darkness, trying to get to Henry; they literally can't walk in daylight, and Sophie's "light" guides him like his light guides her; and the ending, which I won't spoil.

"But darling, you are not in control. Not anymore."

Heartbreaking quote.

Overall, "Sophie's Ruin" is a captivating read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With its improved pacing, character development, and role reversal, this book is a must-read for romantasy and vampire fans. I eagerly await the next installment to see where Davis takes the story. (The epilogue was also great but wasn't too illegal of a cliffhanger!)

3⭐️/1🌶️

This book started off really strong for me. I was able to pick back up in the series even though it has been some time since I read Josephine's Tear. I was really pulled into the book by the plot. The climax happened at 70% so the rest of the book was just kind of slow and bleh at that point for me.

It was interesting to learn about Sophie's powers and how desperate she was to tap into them as a vampire in order to save Henry.

Henry's journey was so brutal and I am so glad that he was able too come out of it and still remain who he was. He did not succumb to his dark side and still remained the light because Sophie really needed it. I did think it was bad ass that he spat Moureau's flesh against the wall. Was it gross? Yes. But it was also kind of satisfying after what Henry went through.

Twists:
Learning that Damian is a demon and not Agatha's son from the village. I kind of suspected it because he would just disappear when Celeste would come around. But duh...the name Damian should have tipped it off.

Celeste trying to absorb Damian into her and lock him up...not knowing that Damian took control of her and locked her away.

I really enjoyed some of the quotes about "darkness" and it could really portray into real world situations.
"Perhaps when you become something new, something inhuman, the darkness is right there, hiding in the shadows, waiting to lure you to its side. It knows you're vulnerable. It can smell your fear, and it tries too way you, testing you. So, you have to give it everything you've got to stay true to yourself."

"The darkness is treacherous, always waiting for you to falter, ready to sink its claws in."

"Don't hold on to what happened. Because if you do, you will be holding on to the darkness, inadvertently letting it win."

"Love is like magic--an incredibly powerful source. It can either save you or ruin you."

"Hold on to your love. It is a weapon, not a weakness."

"I learned the hard way that fighting the darkness alone is not a good idea."

Sophie and Henry are meeting with the clan leaders to decide the future of the empire. They were both vampires and she defeated the Dark Witches. They wanted the clan to know that their place is no longer at the top , ruling over the Humans. They were all at the meeting vampires leaders, a white witch and a human. The meeting didn’t go as planned when the human mention Sophie’s amulet that toke out the Dark Witches and can also take out the vampires. Henry told the white witch to take Sophie because the leaders went after her. Leaving Henry and Isabella to fight the vampires off. They toke a beating, Isabella was hurt bad but they let her escape to find Sophie. They toke Henry as hostage so Sophie can come back and try to rescue him. They wanted the amulet. Isabella was found by wren and brought to where Sophie and the witch was. She wasn’t in good shape but with some help she started to feel better. Isabella warned Sophie that Henry is ok but the clan had him. Sophie wanted to go to help him but she couldn’t,not yet she wasn’t ready. They couldn’t kill Henry but that didn’t mean they couldn’t torture him. Now she has to figure out her witch powers, and how to control them. To save Henry and eliminate the clan once’s and for all. Sophie learned a lot of her powers, not as much as she needs to. When Celeste found her she tried to tell her but Sophie didn’t want to listen to her. Sophie made the biggest mistake, because she wasn’t thinking right. Now the darkness it’s taking over. What will she do? Who will pay the price? Must read this book to see what happens next.

“……..but humanity still burned bright inside her. It was one of the things that drew me to her—that light. Beautiful and powerful, it helped banish the shadows of my past.”

This is book two in Crimson and Shadows. It picks up right where book one left off. This book is a little out of my usual reads. It has witches and vampires but it was definitely different and not exactly what I was expecting! Going into this book I did not realize it was the second book but I did read book one before divining into this. Book two continues to follow Sophie after the events of book one. In the first few chapters the Clan leaders are all gathered to discuss next steps for them and the world now that the Dark Witches are gone. There’s a fit and Sophie ends up at a cottage with Celeste and Waylon. Celeste starts training Sophie’s magic while they have the time. Fast forward they try to save Henry. Do they save him? Does it end there? Is there another battle/argument with the clan? Maybe. You’ll have to grab the books and find out!!

Over all the book is a wonderful read. It pulls you in and keeps you entangled in its pages from beginning to end!

First I want to thank @vidavis.author for the ARC of Sophie’s Ruin in return for my honest review.💜

Second if you’re a fan of The Vampire Diaries (like I am) then you’d DEVOUR this book! It’s the second book in the Crimson & Shadows series.

I adored Sophie (except for the times she made me want to slap her lol). She struggles with walking the line between darkness and light and doing the wrong things for the right reasons. I also really liked Henry’s character and his POV and getting to learn his background.

The story kept me on the edge of my seat, especially a specific scene that about made my heart fall to my stomach. (When you read it, you’ll know). I also loved how the MFC and MMC’s roles were switched, where as in other books it’s the MFC who needs saving by the MMC, Davis reversed those roles and this Shadow Mommy was coming for her man, at ANY cost!!!❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

I’m definitely going to be going back and reading book 1 and then re-reading this book to get the full experience but I had a great time!

✨Sophie’s Ruin✨

What a fantastic sequel for Davis’ series! It was so good to be back with Sophie and Henry!

In book two, we begin right where we left off: the world has an opportunity to be redeemed and Henry and Sophie are excited to present it to the other Clans. But when the meeting goes wrong, Henry and Sophie both find themselves immersed in a darkness that is overwhelming and tangible. SR is the descent into that darkness and the fight to find a light when there’s little hope. It is the epitome of saving someone who doesn’t deserve it and sometimes it’s from ourselves.

I enjoyed getting Henry’s POV in this sequel and I loved that we got to learn more about the clans. The world building expanded and our characters were put through the wringer as they fought for their humanity and that of the humans.

Tropes you may find in SR are feminine rage, dual POV, vampires and witches, dark themes, magic, revenge, medium spice, touch him and ☠️, morally grey characters, and a HEA.

Sophie’s Ruin is out and available now!

Wow- what an ending!! Left me craving the next installment in this series asap! 💗🤩🤣 Sophie’s Ruin- what can I say? It met and exceeded my expectations- I had so much fun with this darker book 🙌 Really hit the “touch him and di3, fem rage” vibe I was craving.

Definitely need to read book 1 before reading this book since it’s a series and needs to be read in order. I can’t say too much without getting spoilery, but I loved getting to read about fiery, impatient and passionate Sophie learning magic and kicking ass; that’s all I can say.

If you love reading books with themes of magic, vampires and romance then this series is for you. 💗🙌 Dual pov, which I love, and great characters! And although vamps and witch stories have been around for ages, this world feels fresh, but dark, and unique. Rich gothic romantasy vibes, with a touch of spice for people who like reading spicy romance, but not so much that you feel the story gets lost.

I can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens next! 💗💗🤩 Run and start this series today! 💗💗💗

I pretty much binged this in one sitting, which is crazy for me since I get distracted so easily. 😄 But this book keeps the storyline moving along at a good pace, and once I got about halfway through, I couldn't put it down!

This sequel does have a different vibe from Josephine's Tear, but not in a bad way! In the first, we're introduced to the world and characters... and hunky Henry. 😏

This sequel, however, covers some darker themes. It's definitely a battle of good vs evil, light vs darkness. At times, it's heartbreaking and I was on the verge of tears. But I loved the overall themes of evil and guilt, and the love and forgiveness that can conquer them.

And that very last scene in chapter 39... 🥹

And the epilogue! 😱 It hints at what's coming in book 3...

⚠️Occasional cursing, including F
🌶🌶 A few open door scenes

Thank you V.I. Davis for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Sophie’s Ruin is the second book in the Crimson and Shadows series, picking up right where Josephine’s Tear left off.

I don’t want to say too much about this book for fear of spoiling the first book, but overall this series is just amazing! Perfect for romantasy and paranormal romance fans, because it’s everything you want a vampire romance to be!

The spice is spicing. The vampires are sexy and dangerous. There are witches and battles and so much romance!

What I really love though is Sophie’s character development. She’d already grown so much in the first book, but Sophie’s Ruin - as the title might imply - really focuses on her and her inner struggles. She faces down brutal challenges, even more than she did the first time around, and I was here for it!

And that ending…oof! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Sophie’s Ruin was such a great follow-up to Josephine’s Tear!

It picked up pretty close to where things left off and then hits the ground running. This one was relatively fast paced and definitely felt darker and spicier than JT. Henry is still the golden retriever of the story and his love for Sophie is so sweet and steadfast. He will do whatever it takes to make sure she’s safe and I absolutely love that about him. He’s consistent and supportive.

Sophie’s character arc as she battles darkness and her growing powers is an experience that I enjoyed a lot! She channels all of the feminine rage when she sets out for revenge and I am here for it! 🙌🏻 We also get to see *enemies* become friends and I love that because forgiveness is so powerful in this storyline.

I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!

I read Josephine’s tear last year. Which is the first book in The Crimson and Shadows series. I had a great time with it and now I am so happy to be back with Henry and Sophie.

This took me on an insane journey😮
I was not expecting the turns that this story took. I felt so much for Sophie and Henry. The way they always fight for each other❤️

I love Sophie even more in the second book. I’m really enjoying her character development. And seeing her try and master her powers.

I also enjoyed the dual pov. It provided more detail from Henry and Sophie. And I just really loved reading Henry’s pov. Seeing what he was thinking and feeling about everything.

So much happened as I got closer to the end. That had me staring at the wall for a minute to process it all. I am so so happy with how it ended and I cannot wait to the third book.

Arc Review

I enjoyed the first book in this series, Josephine’s Tear, but I absolutely LOVED the second book Sophie’s Ruin! This book takes a dark turn in the series which made Sophie’s Ruin so captivating that I did not want to put it down. Sophie’s character arc is the epitome of feminine rage and revenge as a result of fighting for who she loves. Additionally, the dual POV of Sophie and Henry throughout this book added so much more emotion and information that added even more depth to the overall plot. Lastly, the epilogue has a jaw-dropping ending, and I now cannot wait for the third book!

I highly recommend this book if you love stories with:
vampires, witches, and humans
dual POV
spice
revenge
found family
dark magic
balance of good and evil

“Sophie’s Ruin” by V.I. Davis is an addictive blend of romance, revenge, and power—part of a romantasy series that pits vampires against witches in a battle as old as time.

At the heart of it all? Sophie and Henry. Their love is all-consuming, undeniable, and tested at every turn. As Sophie steps deeper into a world of magic and blood, she learns just how intoxicating power can be—and how easily it can corrupt.

This story isn’t just about love; it’s about vengeance, sacrifice, and the darkness that lurks within us all.

Favorite quote:
“Human, witch, vampire—we all carried some darkness within us, some more than others. It was a constant battle to keep that darkness contained and not let it take over.”

Wow! 4.5⭐️

I loved Sophie’s Ruin so much more than I expected!

👏👏👏

I truly felt a connection to the characters and enjoyed the chemistry of Sophie & Henry. I also loved the growth of Sophie’s relationship with Isabelle & other important side characters.

The plot… 👏👏👏 so good! Not what I was expecting at first but everything I didn’t know I needed! I loved that we saw the ugly side of becoming a vampire/witch. It kept me on my toes from start to finish!

The epilogue! 😱 I’m definitely expecting book 3 & cannot wait to read it!

Final thoughts? If book one was a struggle for you, as it was for me, just know that book two made it all worth it in my opinion! PS: Lot more of spice too!! 🌶️🔥🥵

This was a super fast paced vampire, witchy romance. Which is everything I love! However, I do feel that this fell flat for me. There was a lot of repetition such as “you’ve defeated the…” and that honestly got on my nerves. I feel like there was a lack of Chemistry between the fmc and mmc for some reason. I think this is due to the writing style of their conversations. All conversation didn’t flow smoothly in my opinion and sounded very literature, middle grade esc. I feel like that’s the only way to describe it. The plot itself was very interesting and I loved the overal premise. It reminded me of vampire diaries ALOT.

This was a fun read! We pick up right where we left off at the end of Josephine’s Tear. I really enjoyed the journey Sophie personally goes through in this book. I love how protective she is of Henry and how she will do anything for him. She really has grapple with her darker side and I liked how it pushed her character forward. Henry is just swoon worthy. He is just such a charming MMC and just fits so well with Sophie. These two continue to have amazing chemistry.

This was a great continuation of the story from the first book. If you loved Josphine’s Tear you will certainly enjoy the second installment in the Crimson and Shadows series!

The writing in this book is so immersive and captivating. I loved the intense passion and longing between Sophie and Henry; it was absolutely intoxicating . As Sophie's thirst for revenge grows, the choices she makes threaten to strip away her humanity and could cost her the very person she's fighting for. If you’re a fan of vampire romances that revolve around a bloodthirsty desire for revenge, then this book is a perfect read for you.

As trailing off of Josephines Tear, I devoured this read. It gave me all the things I love in paranormal romance. The storylines captivating with a darker twist and thrilling as it continues Sophies journey. It’s very immersive and addictive as you ride the dark waves of Sophies battle between light and dark, her love and madness, for her partner Henry, her internal battle for what is just or unjust. The spicy scenes are just as delicious and steamy. (No spoilers) is her retribution enough or will the darkness continue to entice and snuff out the light.

V.I. Davis is back with another romantic, passionate, gothic, and lush fantasy romance!

What an amazing follow up to Josephine’s Tear. This story picks up right where book one left off and it is equal parts steamy, magical, and eerie.

I absolutely love Sophie’s character arc in this one and the romance between her and Henry is extremely swoon worthy. I flew through this one because I had to see what happened next.

I cannot wait for the next installment in this series!

V.I and me are gonna have some problems after this book! My poor Henry just couldn’t catch a break the whole time. It was so nice to see Sophie become the bad b*tch we knew she always was. Henry may have fell around in book one but Sophie fell even harder in this book. This series is an amazing telling of two people that seem like they have nothing in common but not everything is black and white.

Im so glad I continued on with this series. I was here for Sophie’s villian arc. I think it was really well done and I understood her decisions completely. Evil comes out of desperation.

I also really appreciate getting a more fleshed out world, which was one of my critiques from book 1. In this one we got more lore, more character building, and felt better paced.

I would also like to thank the author for allowing me to read this Arc and happy release day!
