His book, The Man Who Made Vermeers (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2008), is a biography of the Dutch art forger Han van Meegeren, based on 3 years of archival research and interviews conducted in 5 nations. It was praised by The New Yorker's Peter Schjeldahl for its "profoundly researched, focused, absorbing depth" and was a finalist for an Edgar Award (fact crime category) and the National Award for Arts Writing.
