Harrowdean Manor #1-2

Harrowdean Manor: The Complete Duet

Rate this book
“Tell us what happened in Harrowdean Manor.”

This is no ordinary psych ward.

One of six experimental institutes scattered across the United Kingdom, it’s a corrupt kingdom built on greed, desperation and lies.

I rule Harrowdean Manor by trading contraband and subjugating the patient population. They all fear me. Hate me. Worship me.

I’m their queen.

That was before the demons from my past clawed their way back into my life. My enemies have returned, and they’re out for blood.

Lennox wants me dead.
Xander wants to break me.
Raine just wants to feel alive.

They tried to destroy me once before, but that just made me ruthless. That’s why I became the villain to survive this sick social experiment, no matter the cost.

Now I’m hell bent on revenge, but violence is brewing as the criminal conspiracy that imprisons us begins to unravel.

In this twisted game of survival, my enemies become my only allies. We must band together to outlive the institute’s evil long enough to tell our tale to the cameras.

Because even villains deserve happy endings.
And I’ll stop at nothing to get mine.

Author’s This is a dark, enemies-to-lovers, why choose romance. Set in the J Rose shared universe, this omnibus contains both books in the Harrowdean Manor duet plus exclusive, unseen bonus content.

Harrowing, brutal and haunting!

Harrowing, brutal and haunting! This is not a book full of heroes. These characters are dark, broken and desperate, doing anything it takes to survive. Don't enter the doors of Harrowdean Manor lightly. Instead enter at your own risk and expect to experience a whole gammet of feelings.

🇬🇧Harrowdean… oh my god, Harrowdean. This duology was a ride — the kind that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. From start to finish, I was completely consumed, heart racing, brain spinning. I wasn’t ready — and honestly? Nothing could’ve prepared me.

This story has everything: pain, survival, rage, love, loss, healing, and a raw intensity that sticks to your skin. Ripley is a powerhouse and easily climbed into my top FMC list. And Xander, Lennox, and Raine… the balance between them, the way they fit together, how they grow as individuals and as a unit — perfection.

Harrowdean has immaculate pacing, a plot that hits hard, and characters that breathe and bleed. There’s nothing clean or sugarcoated here — it’s raw, brutal, beautiful, and addictive. I devoured book one, but book two wrecked me in the best way. The ending. The hidden snippets from BI. The Brook Boys showing up with takeaway (yeah, that scene broke me). And the time jump? It punched me in the gut and hugged me right after.

J. Rose has a way of writing found families, trauma, mental health, and imperfect love that’s just unmatched. Harrowdean isn’t just a duology. It’s an obsession. It’s home.

And now? Now I’m heading straight into Anaconda Tales. Warner, I’m coming for you. 🖤

🇵🇹Harrowdean… meu Deus, Harrowdean.

It’s been 10 years since she escaped harrowdean manor and she’s finally ready to expose the horrors that incendi puts their patients through as a part of their “rehabilitation program”.
Ripley’s life was far from perfect. Both her parents are dead and she has been in her uncles care since the age of 8. She had a roof over her head and food to eat but her life was rocked when her manic episode causes her to step too far outside the box her uncle has kept her in. The one thing he cares about most is his reputation and if that means sending his niece to a mental institution to help keep her in line so be in.
Harrowdean is no ordinary institution. the brochures do an amazing job hiding the demons that lie within the walls. Ripley may have been in a better position than most patients seeing that she was managements stooge. As long as she did what they wanted she could finish the three year program with little trouble. That is until priority lane is shut down and more patients arrive at harrowdean.
The transfer brings back two demons from her past she thought she had eliminated and one angel that might be able to save her from damnation.
Xander
The iceman. His lack of emotions have people questing whether he is a psychopath or if it’s just a trauma response. He wants to be the one to exact revenge for what she did and he won’t let anyone steal that from him. He’s expecting to find the old Riley not the new version of her that makes him question how strong his ice walls really are.
Lennox
He thrives on causing others pain. As long as the people he cares about are safe he doesn’t care who he hurts in the process. Ripley is number one on his hit list but will their need to survive be able to overwrite the past actions.
Raine
Since the moment he ran into to his guava girl he knew she would be his forever. The only things standing in his was is his two best-friends wanting her dead and the withdrawals that keep pulling him back to the pills. Will she be enough to get him sober Or will the drugs claim more than just his sight?
J rose did an amazing job on this duet. She really knows how to create hot, damaged, morally gray character that will have you on your knees for them. She knows how to tug on my heart string and make me want to jump into the pages and give them all the love they lack but deserve. I loved watching each relationship grown in its own way throughout the story. The family they have created together. The last chapter filled my heart with so much joy, bringing everyone together!

My least favorite duet.

**SPOILERS**

Ripley is a patient at Harrodean Manor, think Blackwood Institute times two. She has survived by dealing drugs, weapons, anything to patients for money. She is surviving day by day - barely, when a twist comes along. The three men she hates most in the world are sent to Harrodean. She sent these men to the Z wing in their old institute where they were tortured, and they detest her for it. But Ripley did it because THEY KILLED HER BEST FRIEND!! They used Ripley, then used her best friend to break her. Ripley got her revenge - she thought - but now they are here and they want to kill her for what she did to them. The duet explores their hate, hate, love relationship, while all four of them try to survive the horrors that are Harrodean.

**THOUGHTS/SPOILERS**

I love Rose’s work. I’ve always been one of the first to pick up whichever newest work she publishes. I skipped Harrowdean for awhile but finally decided I needed to know about Ripley and her guys. I gotta say I was sorely disappointed. Not with Ripley, I thought she was a strong, kickass character, and loved how she put everyone in their place. I really didn’t like her harem though, and I didn’t like their relationship or romance. Frankly I don’t think Ripley should’ve ever forgiven them (yes she did terrible things too) but she did them AFTER the guys killed her only friend. There wasn’t enough plot progression or depth to make Ripley believably forgive the guys for Killing her best friend. Their hate was ridiculous and unwarranted. THEY SELF PROCLAIMED that they were the ones that “made her a monster” so how dare they hate her for what she did, and try to kill her!! Being thrown into isolation and tortured was not enough reason to have Ripley and one of her guys forgiving each other…especially since he nearly killed her by drowning her!!! Xander was a psychotic (and not in a lovable way) a-hole, who cared for no one except his guys. And Raine was the only semi-decent guy in the harem…but he was weak, and dependent on the drugs that Ripley had to supply to him to keep him alive…yeah, very romantic - NOT!! No, this was NOT a love story, not even a good dark romance. It was just a study on how people can hate each other so much they are consumed with nothing else but the thought of revenge and murder.

I was seriously disappointed that one of my favorite dark romance authors gave us such a lackluster duet.

The conclusion to their story is satisfying. I'm so glad Rip was able to get her revenge, that she was able to create a life with her men, and feel protected.

The amount of pain and suffering they all went through to get to that point was intense. J Rose pulled no punches. These characters were very morally grey, there is no way to paint them as only the good guys bc of all they did and were willing to do for their family. And that was the point- what are we willing to do to ourselves and others to protect the ones we love? To protect ourselves? At what point would those actions stop being reasonable and veer into the unethical realm of human response? Rip understood this better than everyone else. They may all have been willing to do the worst possible to protect and get revenge, but Rip's conscience was the strongest.

J Rose writes some of the best mental health rep out here. As someone diagnosed with bipolar disorder over 20 years ago, here commentary and descriptions of what that feels like was like a douse of cold water and made my stomach drop. But in a good way- bc it reminded me of manic periods that I have been able to stabilize from, to recover from. Unlike Ripley, my safe circle did not accept and love me regardless. Xan, Nox, and Raine gave her the safety and acceptance that so many need. They didn't make her feel bad about the cycles, what she said or did during these periods. They just accepted her and helped however they could. It was cathartic to read.

And I just love Raine so much, so so much. His broken soul healed through this devastating journey. And Xan finally felt again. I read the Anaconda Tales series before this one and when I found out who Langley actually was I screamed! Such a full-circle moment

3.5 stars.

I almost wish I had read these as two separate books, because this is a BEAST of a book at almost 900 pages and for some of it I sorta felt like I was just slogging through. I even put it down for a few weeks to read something else, and then had to skim a little bit to reorient myself before digging in for the second half.

The writing is well done and the editing is clean. It's technically a standalone story, but I think the additional context of the prior stories would be helpful. The FMC is endearing, flaws and all, and a morally grey badass who is just doing her best to survive in unfortunate circumstances. I wish the MMCs had more POVs that went a little more in-depth to their feelings....the relationships all felt a little surface levely. Yes, even with Raine, who was very cutely/sweetly obsessed with her but honestly not much else until the last 20%.

Also I SWEAR I picked this up because m/m was mentioned in the recommendation, but alas, there was none. A group/voyeurism scene here and there, but that's it.

I really could relate to this read so much. It seems like J.Rose took some of my fears and feeling’s on some things and put them to words. Ie all struggle with some form of mental health, in some way. Maybe it is a small relatable like me, or maybe it is a whole lot like this. That is the beauty of reading a J. Rose book. She just writes so good, and captures these characters like they are real.

I got wrapped up in Ripley and her guys and could not stop until I finished. From beginning to end, hooked. Of course all you have to do is mention it’s a J. Rose book and bam, I am hooked.

A great read full of relatable characters, well written words that feels like a movie. Get lost in this book juat like I did!

🖤 Harrowdean Manor Duet by J. Rose 🖤

A psychiatric institute turned kingdom.
A riot that burned everything down.
Enemies who became obsession.
And a found family born from blood, trauma, and survival.

Ripley, Lennox, Xander, and Raine’s story is brutal, messy, and unforgettable. Truly just two books that will break you apart and stitch you back together in the darkest, rawest way.

If you crave why choose romance tangled with conspiracies, riots, and morally grey characters who claw their way to love, this duet will absolutely consume you.

🔥 Read in order:
Sin Like the Devil
Burn Like an Angel

Even villains deserve happy endings. 🖤

Ripley and her guys are such easy characters to get wrapped into. Their struggles with mental health are very relatable, as well as the self-hatred and terror of letting others in. I have devoured all of the Incendia/Sabre Security books, I can't get enough. The writing is phenomenal, and the character's transformations always makes them a good read. Throw some spice in there, and you have a winner 😉

Looking for a reason to stop adulting ... this is it!

The story is intense. The enemies to lovers vibe is real. The story grips you, hooks you from the start and doesn't let you go!

Def recommend this for the dark romance lovers!

Enjoyable but not my favorite duet. It was a lot of push and pull. Heavy heavy enemies to lovers. Obviously you can tell this favorite in this as well and I dislike a favorite in a why choose cause you not suppose to have a favorite.

But it was a run read.

4.75/5 stars

I read and reviewed both books in the Harrowdean Manor duet when they released in 2024 and gave both 5 stars so will keep this review short.

Firstly, I freaking adore J.Rose and her stories, and I love that with the completion of each of her series, she gives us these omnibus editions that feature brand new, never before seen bonus content!

These characters are so incredible, and I love how beautifully written their stories were. J.Rose always takes such care with the mental health topics she explores and that makes these characters so much more relatable. Ripley, Raine, Lennox and Xander are some of my favourite characters J.Rose has ever written, so I was so happy to be back with them again and get these bonus scenes and they did not disappoint. Being in Xander’s mind is my favourite thing so his bonus scene was incredible. I also adored the final bonus scene where we had some character cameos from this author’s previous works.

If you are a lover of all things J.Rose, then this book is definitely worth the read 🖤
