Back in the Pack is a touching tale of resilience, the transformative power of companionship, and the beauty that emerges when one embraces the possibilities of a joyful tomorrow.

What a sweet story, Sometimes when you lose someone in life. Getting a dog, It's a touch of heaven. Dogs can love you unconditional, no matter what. And they can sense when you're sad.
This story was simply sweet. It has loss and then it has a happy ending. Simply written so sweet. You just want to keep turning those pages. and bonus, short chapters, those are the best.
This is the first book i've read by this author but I really enjoyed it. Any book with dogs in it them are absolutely adorable in my eyes. 🐾
This was another good book in this series. It was nice getting a more in depth look at two characters we met in the previous book. I love the puppy’s thoughts too
“Back in the Pack”, Book #4 of the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series, follows a sweet litter of Labrador puppies and their owners. Barbara Hinske brings us this emotional and lovely story of Drew, his daughter Allie, and their pup Lily, named after Allie’s mother’s favorite flower. It follows Drew through the trial of living life without Kayla, and raising a puppy along with his daughter, and some days feeling lost and defeated. Such a beautiful story that will leave you feeling comfortable and happy for their future.
Heartwarming is the best word I can think of to describe this sweet story. Drew is a Dermatologist, widower as well as a single dad to eight-year-old Allie. Resulting from a tragic car accident, Drew’s wife, and mother of Allie died unexpected. Hoping to help his bereaved daughter, Drew agrees to adopt a puppy. It was a totally new experience for both of them since Drew never grew up with a dog or cat. As they adjust to adding Lily to their family, they also make several new friends who also adopted a puppy from the same breeder. One of their new friends, Marsha, has even agreed to help Drew out with childcare for Allie each Friday. Marsha and Allie become fast friends, with many of the same interests, including art. Marsha serves as a grandmother figure to Allie, sharing with her new experiences such as baking bread. A revelation of a life-long secret as well as the identify of one of their new friends is not only shocking but also life-changing for all involved. This delightful, heartfelt story was nearly impossible to put down until the last page was turned. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are my own.
Back in the Pack is the fourth book in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Series by Barbara Hinske. This series has a different author for each family that adopts a yellow lab puppy from Leslie. I knew to read the first book which introduce the puppies and the families that that adopts them. From there, I didn’t think it would make any difference. I began with Lily the last little puppy adopted by father, Drew and his daughter Allie. They are grieving the lost of wife and mother. The puppy certainly helps. However, it is the connection to the litter that brings the people involved into each other’s lives, wonderfully so. I loved the puppy’s viewpoint at times in these books too as well as the “hoo-mans”.
What a book of surprises to be revealed by the end. If I had read the novellas in order, I would have understood what Drew was going to face. These authors must have worked together closely because the stories flow seamlessly from one novella to the next. Now I went back and read them in the correct order learning facts and tidbits along the way. I suggest readers do the same. For any animal lover out there, this is one great series.
Dog And Kid Damn Near Steal The Show. I'm not normally one to enjoy books where kids play outsized roles or steal scenes, but Hinske here absolutely makes it work to help elevate the adult storyline of a widower and father just trying to re-establish his life and help his daughter heal after the tragic loss of his wife/ her mother before the events of this tale. The interplay with both the overall Dragonfly Cove series/ community and specifically Marsha from Hearts Unleashed, the book immediately prior to this one in series order, is particularly well done, and here we actually get to see a pivotal scene from that book play out again here from a different perspective, which is always interesting. That two different authors were involved only shows just how skilled and talented both are as storytellers - and, likely, that both shared a strong editor as well. :D
Yet another quick read at around 150 ish pages, Hinske too manages to pack quite a bit of story in such a small package. Really this entire series is a great boost for those looking to start their 2025 reading strong, particularly if you also happen to be a dog lover.
A wonderful addition to our new series! Tales That Will Leave Paw Prints on Your Heart

Book 1: Pick of the Litter Book 2: Collar Me Crazy by Kay Bratt Book 3: Hearts Unleashed by Tammy L. Grace Book 4: Back in the Pack by Barbara Hinske Book 5: Loyal & True by Ev Bishop Book 6: Coming Home to Heel by Jodi Allen Brice Book 7: Unleashed Melody by Julie Carobini Book 8: Teacher's Pet by David Johnson Book 9: A New Leash on Life by Patricia Sands
Each of the books in the Dragonfly Cove series tells the story of one of the characters whose life is changed when they adopt a pup from a special litter of nine Labrador retrievers. From puppy training to obedience class and outings to the local dog-friendly establishments, there are blessings and challenges along the way. One thing is sure – they will never be quite the same.
In this book, we meet Marsha Warner. She’s lived in Dragonfly Cove for nearly 20 years, but after the loss of her parents, she’s feeling especially lonely and struggling. An unexpected friendship with Craig Banks has been a bright spot in her life and when he encourages her to consider getting a dog, she takes the plunge.
In a clever mix of storytelling from both the human and canine points of view, we follow the journey of Marsha and her pup, Earl. Buoyed by the companionship of her dog and the deepening friendship with Craig, Marsha opens her heart to help others and dares to consider addressing a secret she’s kept hidden for decades.
I loved this story of courage, resilience, and the hope of second chances.
This fourth installment in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series, written by Barbara Hinske, is a true delight. I fell in love with Drew and Allie when they were first introduced in Book 3, Heart's Unleashed. While Heart's Unleashed is told from Marsha's perspective, this book offers Drew's point of view.
Drew and his daughter Allie are both coping with the loss of Allie's mother. Before her passing, they had signed up with a breeder to adopt a puppy. Drew expected it to take another six months, but when he received a call that a puppy was available immediately, he decided that a puppy might be just what Allie needed to help her heal.
The author beautifully captures Drew's journey as he navigates life as a single father, helping Allie cope with the loss of her mother. Adding a puppy to their lives not only aids in Allie's healing but also helps Drew learn to navigate their new normal. The story is both touching and inspiring.
This story will tug at your heartstrings and leave you feeling hopeful and uplifted.
If you love dogs and enjoy a well-written tale of hope and new beginnings, you are going to love Drew and Allie's story.
Back in the Pack by Barbara Hinske is the fourth book in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series. Marsha Warner, a longtime resident of Dragonfly Cove, has been struggling with grief after losing her parents and feels deeply lonely. When a friend suggests she adopt one of Leslie’s puppies, Marsha takes the advice, unknowingly opening a new chapter in her life. Through the puppy, she meets Andrew, a widower, and his young daughter, Allie, who are also mourning the loss of Andrew’s wife and Allie’s mother, Kayla. Allie names her new puppy Lily in honor of her mother, whose favorite flower was a lily. Marsha offers to help the family by spending time with Allie and her new puppy, and in turn, both puppies—Earl and Lily—become sources of comfort and healing for their grieving humans. The story is one of love, healing, and second chances, as the characters learn to mend their broken hearts with the help of their loyal, four-legged companions.
Back in the Pack is book four in the delightfully heartwarming ‘Dragonfly Cove Dog Park’ series. It can absolutely be read as a wonderful stand-alone but I suggest that these books are read in order for maximum enjoyment as regular characters do appear in other books in the series.
Grieving Andrew and is delightful daughter Allie have the last puppy in this incredibly special litter of yellow Labradors. Gorgeous, loving and sensitive Lily was just waiting for them to take her home, she was always meant to be their dog. Together, this trio bond, love and grow as little Lily lightens their hearts and enriches their lives in the most unexpected ways.
I loved this book. It touches your heart and gently reminds you that joy can be found in the simplest things even at the saddest of times. This book and series cannot be recommended highly enough.
Back in the Pack: Drew would do anything for his daughter that would help her through the sad times without her Mom. So he kept to the agreement that they had made to Allie when Kayla was still alive. That was get a puppy. He thought he wss going to have more time but a puppy was left from this litter and he say yes. All his life he knew he was adopted but it wasn't until now he start wonder about his biological parents. When the adopt agency reach out he waited for a bit until realized he what to meet his biological mother. Time and a place was set up. He could believe he already knew her and he was so happy that it was Marsha and they chatted for awhile. Fantastic stiry!
Back in the Pack by Barbara Hinske is a heartfelt masterpiece that beautifully captures the essence of love, loss, and healing. Through the tender bond between Drew, his grieving daughter Allie, and Lily—the adorable pup who becomes their guiding light—Hinske crafts a story full of hope and second chances.
I especially adored the storyline with Drew and Allie’s special bond with Marsha. The love and healing that emanates from this relationship is beautiful.
This touching story masterfully portrays the healing power of companionship, showing how even the smallest, furriest presence can bring transformative joy to broken hearts. 🐾❤️
Great heartwarming feel good story about how widower Drew & his 8 year old daughter Allie learn to function through life without their wife/mom Kayla by their side…she had passed away in a car accident 6 months ago. Prior to her death, they had signed up to adopt a yellow lab,Drew goes through with the adoption process, hoping that with the help of the dog (who Allie names the dog Lily) they can both begin to heal. Another healing process takes place when they take Lily to puppy school & they meet & befriend Marsha (she had adopted Earl,Lily’s brother). You’ll have to read about this part of the book 💞
Drew,Allie,Lily,Marsha and Earl what a surprise....
Barbara Hinske continues telling the story of widow Drew, daughter Allie and their dog Lily. He is doing his best to be a great father to Allie after the loss of his wife Kayla to a car accident. Drew decides to keep his promise that he would get the puppy for Allie. Lily becomes a good fit for their family. You have to chuckle at the mishaps that take place in the story. I could not put this book down. I read it in one day. The story has a wonderful happy end. It makes you want to know more of the story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Jan not Rick (shared account). I’m sure it’s no coincidence that Barbara Hinske’s book follows Tammy L Grace’s: the characters of the two books are so interconnected. It was such a pleasure to learn more about Drew, Allie and Lily in Back in the Pack, and have the end of the previous book more fully completed. And what a truly heartwarming HEA ending it was for all the humans - the dogs as well. Now - on to the next in the series. P.S. - while her Rosemont series will always be my favorite, I’ve read everything Barbara Hinske has written and most definitely recommend them all.
Another sweet read I. The DragonFly Cove series. Widowed dad Drew is floundering with his daughter Allie. Managing childcare, dinner, and his medical practice is overwhelming. Unexpectedly they have a chance to add a puppy to the mix. Enter Lily! The training hazards make for accidents and messes. Lily does her best to cheer up her family.
Drew’s support system is wonderful. He has interaction with Marsha and her littermate puppy Earl. What is their connection?
Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.
Back in the Pack by Barbara Hinske is a wonderful addition to the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park Series. I think these authors are all striving to pull our heartstrings as far as they can. These books are so heartwarming and are just what we need to transition out of the holiday season into the long, cold winter months. I love lighthearted fun books after all of the busyness of the holidays. I find it hard to settle down to serious reading when we have had so much fun.
I think you could pick up any of these books and read them as standalones. I also think you would be depriving yourself of all the fun. I intentionally read these books as if I was a normal consumer of books. I read the prequel a while before I was able to start the next book. Let me tell you, I was so excited to jump right into this series. I have even had to make myself stop after each book to write my review so I would lose the excitement I felt for each one as I read it.
Back in the Pack is about Drew and Allie. Drew is a single father to Allie. He is adjusting to being alone and raising his daughter. Life is tough and he is also learning to cook. That is fun!
I like sentimental books and the ones that make me shed a tear or two. If you are like me, I think you will really enjoy Back in the Pack by Barbara Hinske and all the other books in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park Series. They would be great books for your nightstand and a little reading before bed. Until next time…Happy Reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbara Hinske. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my own and I was not required to write a review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Drew Blake finds himself the single parent to 8-year-old Allie after his wife is taken from them way too early. Allie is having difficulty dealing with the loss of her mother and Drew's adoptive parents have passed as well, so it's just the two of them. An opportunity to adopt one of Leslie Burns' puppies comes about and Drew hopes that this will help Allie adjust. Drew and Allie find more than the companionship of their new puppy, in Dragonfly Cove. Who would have thought that their small family could grow?
Drew and his little girl Allie adopt a little fur baby that they named Lily. Losing her mother 6 months before, Allie now has a companion to love and take care of. Both Drew and Allie surround themselves with friends, that feel like family. Dragonfly cove is an ideal place for them to heal. It’s a community of people that bond and look out for each other. There are some surprises along the way. Sit, relax, and enjoy their story. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
Back in the Pack: A Heartwarming Story of the Dogs Who Rescue Us by Barbara Hinske is book #4 in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series.
This was such a sweet story. It is Drew, Allie, and pup Lily’s story. Drew and Allie are struggling with the death of their wife/mother 6 months earlier. I love how these stories overlap and we see how the puppies expand their peoples’ social circle. The puppies are so healing. This had chapters from Lily’s perspective too. I can’t wait to read the next story!
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
As another of the Lab litter finds her new home, a healing journey begins for her new humans. Navigating a busy medical practice and single parenting proves challenging after a tragic loss, but the new pup in the house brings happiness once more. The Lab litter mates continue to draw their humans together in the quaint town of Dragonfly Cove, with a unique bond forming between middle aged Martha and new widower Drew and his daughter Allie. Another great edition in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series by the talented author Barbara Hinske!
New addition to the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series this one by Barbara Hinske. This story has some chapters that are from the viewpoint of the puppy. Allie’s mom recently died and her struggling father, Drew, agreed to step up the adoption of her puppy. Allie is the last of the group to get her pup and is thrilled when it is a girl like she’s been hoping for. She names her Lily. How will Drew and Allie navigate having a new puppy with all the other things they have to learn to handle without Drew’s late wife? *I received this as an ARC reader and am leaving my unbiased review.
This was a great story that meshed perfectly with the entire series. Wonderful characters, wonderful location and of course - there are the dogs. The characters crossed over not just from story to story within the series but from other stories the authors have written. A fantastic writing concept! I was fortunate to have been given the opportunity to be an advanced reader which enabled me to read them all right away and I’m sure once you read the first one, you’ll want to keep right on reading. Enjoy!!
I really enjoyed the quick pace, dual POV and seamlessly woven backstory style of this story. Drew and his young daughter are doing their best to deal with the recent, sudden loss of his wife and also settling into a new city. Drew's decision to adopt a puppy opens comfort and new friendships for both of them. There is also a lovely twist near the end that gathers all of the loose ends into a warm blanket of love and satisfaction. This heartwarming story will touch and lift you at the same time. Just read it!
This is the 4th Book in the Dragonfly Cove Dog Park series. This is the story of Lily, Andrew and Allie. Andrew is trying to raise his daughter, Lily, after his wife passed away. The poor little girl has been heart broken and reserved since her mother's passing. When Andrew gets the chance to get her a yellow lab puppy, he hopes that will help to ease the heartbreak. When Lily joins the family, it gives them a new purpose and meeting new people along the journey.
this is a story to grab your heart and yet is so well told you will love it.
Drew is now a single dad. His wife had died suddenly and he was left with a daughter he loved and no knowledge of how to do it alone. He and his daughter are told they need a dog to help them cope so they get Lily. Between friends and the new friends they make at doggy training they learn new ways that help them there is another story imbedded in this story but I will let you learn it as you read. All together a great story.
I love any book by Barbara Hinske, and I'm enjoying this entire series called Dragonfly Cove Dog Park. In this book #4 widower Drew, trying to ease his daughter Allie's grief over the death of her mother/his wife, agrees to adopt a yellow lab puppy that they name Lily. They adjust to puppy care and delight in raising this adorable puppy. Marsha, another puppy adoptive mother, helps Drew and Allie by caring for Allie and/or Lily when Drew has to work or is otherwise busy. Multiple themes endear this story to the reader--healing from grief, friendships, and a family reunion.
What a beautiful read, I really loved this book! This is the story about Andrew Blake and his 8 year old daughter Allie, they are suffering from the loss of a wife and mother. They will finally get the puppy Allie had longed for from the breeder Leslie Burns. The sweetest yellow labrador pup jumps into their lives, Lily takes her family into a new busy world, the dog world. The adventures of learning to keep up with a young pup. The fun times and not so fun times of being caught up in the Lily antics, puppy classes and being part of a dog loving community. Lily needs a nanny as she can't be left alone for too long. Across their path they will be spending time with Marsha who has Earl, one of Lily's siblings. The title of this book fits in really well with this sweet read, the amazement of a family finding their path back together thanks to their furry destiny. I'd say mission accomplished! I'm all for this happy ending. I'm grateful to have read this story. Thanks for the opportunity to read this book. Charlotte N
Lily's new family has a bit of healing to do. It's a good thing she's joined them to give them the comfort of cuddles and puppy kisses.
Drew is still learning to get along after the loss of his wife. He and Allie aren't just grieving her loss but also the trauma of the suddenness of it.
They've good friends, and now a puppy, to help them.
The story hits some deep topics but is hopeful throughout.
This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the author.
