Conspiracy of Vampires

Rate this book
She’s a victim on the prowl. He’s a monster in remission. Will these mortal enemies give in to forbidden temptation?

Pagan Hall yearns for vengeance. After her parents were murdered, the redheaded survivor’s obsessive search for the culprit wrecked any chance of a satisfying relationship. But when she uncovers a promising clue, she unwittingly rushes headfirst into the bronzed arms of a sultry vampire.

Nyx struggles to escape the shame of his savage past. Devoting time to smuggling wereanimals to safety, the centuries-old beast believes the revenge-hungry beauty on his doorstep is just another reckless creature to guard. But even after binding her to him in blood, the vamp is shocked to discover his pretty new ward would rather face death than submit to his protection.

Breaking free of her raven-haired captor’s alluring spells, Pagan confronts supernatural conspirators hellbent on stopping her heart. And Nyx fears the only way to save the woman he's falling for is to turn her into something she detests.

Can two unlikely lovers survive the terrors of a long night?

I've been obsessed with vampires, ghosts, witches and almost anything else paranormal since I can remember. Possibly before that.

I started devouring books at the late age of ten after battling the dyslexia monster. I quickly made up for all those lost reading years. The joke was that my end of the trailer was going to sink under the weight of all the books.

By the ripe old age of twelve I knew I wanted to be a writer after reading an author who was published at thirteen. I didn't make it by thirteen, and not to brag or anything ("who am I kidding? I love to brag!" - name that TV character!) but I was finally published at nineteen.

Things have happened since then. I've quit and tried to join the normal world. You can see how well that worked out because I've come back to writing. I've taken a new pen name. I've ripped apart my process and old books and now I'm trying to make up for lost time. Again!

You haven't failed until you quit. That's my piece of life advice for you.

If you know the TV quote above, you can probably guess that I'm obsessed with kick as* heroines, dastardly villains, and a little bit of romance. If you love those things too, you're in the right place.

All my love,

Miranda Thorn

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

At some point in the past few weeks, I came across an excerpt of this book on social media and I was hooked. This was such a fun and wild ride! The banter and the sass from both the FMC and the MMC were awesome. The FMC makes a lot of questionable decisions that get her into dangerous situations, but it was fun to read about. The MMC admits he's controlling because he wants her safe and she won't listen to reason, so he also takes some questionable liberties with her and her safety. Was it lowkey kinda sorta toxic at points? Yes. Did my morals go out the window when they were explained away? Of course! ♡ Did I enjoy this immensely? I sure did! If you're looking for a fun, bantery, slightly toxic vampire romance this book is for you!

This book was a lot of fun! I flew right through it.

———

Upon reread I still found this book very entertaining, but insanely insta lovey!
Nyx, and old as f*ck vampire, falling in love and binding himself for eternity to a girl he’d known for what seemed like just a couple of days which she spend either trying to kill him, run from him, fight with him and exasperate him and who he literally knew almost nothing about was a little ridiculous and unbelievable to me.
And Pagan only seemed to like Nyx s*xually for most of the book and found him too controlling but then suddenly she loves him too at the end?
And they honestly just seemed frustrated with each other all the time rather than in love.
Other than when they were banging.

The world building in this book is incredible, the storyline is gripping and exciting and the characters are strong, sassy and full of snark especially our female mc who totally kicks ass and is our bad ass vampire hunter who is also seeking revenge for her parents deaths. Fast paced, action packed, there is twists and turns to have you on the edge of your seat and then there’s Nyx our super hot, super old vampire who goes out of his way to help others including Pagan. It’s a fantastic, intense read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

DNF @44%. Was really hoping this would be a good one but I just could not get with the main characters. The FMC is reckless for no discernible reason theses are half assed explained and sexual consent is definitely dubious considering the MMC isn't exactly very charming to me. Glad I bought this at a discounted buck than full price..

Thorn places the ability of vampires to control their victims front-and-centre, creating a paranormal romance where the female protagonist has cause to doubt her emotions rather than just her potential lover’s actions.

Pagan Hall has spent her adult life hunting the worst of vampires in the hope of finding those responsible for her parents’ murder. From the guilty look in her latest target’s eyes, she is sure she has finally found answers—and vengeance. However, Nyx proves to be much more powerful than any vampires she has faced before. Beaten unconscious, she expects death; instead she awakens mystically bound to his will. He claims he wants to keep her safe, but how can she trust him—or the attraction she feels?

Unlike many paranormal romances where the female protagonist is a hunter, Pagan starts the book aware that not all vampires are evil—she and her brother were even raised by a vampire after their parents death. This removes the need for much of the generic “can I trust any vampire” doubts, allowing the romantic tension to focus on the conflicts between the characters and their situations.

Indeed, Thorn actively uses the possibility of blanket prejudices as a plot point, both with the witch families—a member of whom Pagan relies on for the potions she uses while hunting—believing that all vampires are an evil that must be eradicated, and with the shapeshifter authorities considering those who become were-animals through bites or scratches rather than being born to it as dangerous creatures rather than people.

Although this interlocking network of supernatural inter- and intra-species groups and disagreements creates a more nuanced paranormal world than either of the extremes of mutual hatred or utterly accepted intermixing, having complex societies for multiple different type of being in the immediate area raises the question of what ordinary humans know: a question Thorn’s almost exclusively supernatural cast doesn’t really address. Thus, while it is implied in Pagan’s brother wanting to pursue a “normal” life that supernatural society is hidden, there is little tension in Pagan’s choice to pursue her crusade rather than hold down a respectable job beyond the objective fact that vampire hunting is dangerous.

The inciting incident of the story is Pagan’s mysterious source directing her toward Nyx as an evil vampire with connections to her parent’s death. Rather than leave it to the reader to wonder whether the information is accurate and whether the source is manipulating Pagan, Thorn swiftly switches narrator to confirm that an unnamed person is using Pagan to remove obstacles. Thus, while doubt remains over Nyx’s morals, the non-romance thread is firmly about why Pagan is being used rather than whether she is.

While Pagan does fight against Nyx, both when it comes to trusting his claims that he is only acting to protect her and when it comes to acting on her attraction toward him, the periods of doubts before giving in to lust are short and the effort Nyx displays to prove he is telling the truth is not vast; thus, this is very much a spicy enemies-to-lovers tale rather than an exploration of the horror of not being able to trust one’s own feelings. Depending on reader preference, this might seem like a pleasing lack of angst and havering, or an annoying eliding of an interesting storyline.

The novel resolves the major plot arcs and thus is, as the author claims, capable of being read as a stand-alone; however, the closing scene hangs a lantern on one of the background details from an earlier chapter, making it fairly obvious not just that there are other books but what the next one is about.

Pagan is a sympathetic protagonist, whose actions are both sustained and made more challenging by her desire to solve her parents’ murder but not to the point of becoming a stereotype of a feisty woman with a mission.

Nyx, unsurprisingly for paranormal romance, is not the evil monster he is initially painted to be. However, he is also not a completely decent guy who is tragically misunderstood. Thus, he is also complex enough to avoid being a stereotype.

The supporting cast each have quirks and conflicting internal drives that make them feel like people rather than foils for the protagonists. However, they still strongly echo urban fantasy tropes.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel. I recommend it to readers seeking paranormal romance that avoids the most common tropes while retaining the focus on supernaturally perfect lovers and fast-paced threats rather than deep introspection.

Ebook. Purchased. 3.5 rounding up. This made me want to rewatch True Blood in all the best (and worst) ways. It was silly and corny and funny with decent spice. It also lacked details (we ride for vibes) and our FMC was such a dope at times. I also really wanted Nyx to be meaner and more of a true “enemy” vs him just being soft for her from their first meeting. Overall a fun ride.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. We met Pagan, vampire hunter who's parents were murdered when she was a kid. She has been hunting vampires in search of the ones who took her parents away from her and her bro Jason. She had an employer who send her targets...vampires who have done bad things but het latest target is apparently ancient. Her and Jason were raised by a vampire, Alaric, after the parents deaths and even he said it's a death sentence to go after Nyx. Pagan goes on thr search for Nyx but what she didn't expect is a delicious specimen of a man Nyx is. When she challenges him, she didn't expect him to arise to the challenge. Waking up jn the hospital anf blood bound to Nyx was not on her agenda. There are things at play that even Pagan can't fathom. Betrayal, lies, revenge and tapping into one's humanity make this a good book. Next one please!

Wow this was so much fun, I absolutely loved it and I couldn't stop reading till the end. Action galore, sassy and snarky interacting to keep me amped and glued to the end. Spice more than enough to keep you entertained. Awesome characters. What more can you ask for. I think I'm definitely adding Miranda to my fav list

Very Confusing

This was such a fast paced read but there were a lot of inconsistencies that made it confusing.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

Pagan is portrayed as this badass vampire hunter, but the very first hunt we see her in, she is running for her life and is saved by Alaric, a vampire who raised her after her parents were killed. Then after she is rescued, she decides to go after the second oldest vampire known, who Alaric warns her not to go after but she's all "I'm the best, I can take him"

Which is where we meet Fang Daddy Nyx, who is the vampire she was warned not to go after. Unsurprisingly, he kicks her ass and blood bonds her to him. This fight, I actually enjoyed. Again, she runs from another fight.

Then she starts having dreams about a demonic vampire and his followers (other than one other time, this isn't touched up on in this book) and Nyx enters her dreams because he felt her fear. This is where we start learning that Pagan isn't fully human? And this is where a LOT of the confusion starts happening.

During the mindspeaking between Pagan and Nyx while she's hiding from him after he blood bonded her, we discover that Pagan and her brother aren't fully human because their parents were vampires (at first it was thought one was, but then later it's made to sound like both, and there was something going on between the mom and one of the villain vamps ?) But them being Gifts (children of vampires) and them not knowing was... confusing? Wouldn't they have had to drink blood? Or have vampiric weaknesses? Pagan runs back to Nyx when we find that he has her brother captive. We also learn that he turned her brother into a vampire, to get her to behave? We also learn that Alaric somehow knew about their parents being vampires but said nothing to them about it, again somehow the kids didn't know and were raised as humans?

And then later, because Pagan became poisoned by one of the bad vamps, Nyx had to turn her into a vampire to save her because apparently she wasn't already a vampire and the blood bond between them that should have saved her because he was one of the oldest vampires wasn't enough? And after she awakens, she's like Bella Swan and is able to keep herself from feeding.

There's also witches, shapeshifters, and weres that all hate each other and don't trust each other throughout all of this, her best friend who is a witch stops her mother from killing Pagan at one point when she was trying to severe the blood bond with Nyx and the mother may or may not be summoning demons (also not touched up on again), and Nyx's right hand man (I believe that's what he was) is a werewolf and at some point Pagan and him kiss when there was absolutely no attraction described prior, just them talking and suddenly them kissing and shes just like okay?

And the enemies to lovers went from die I hate you, you killed my parents to suddenly being I love you, don't leave me in less than two pages.

I do like the premise of the story and the characters are okay, I think with a little bit more polishing this would make an excellent story, it just wasn't doing it for me at this time.

I enjoyed this, it was a quick, fast-paced vampire urban fantasy, really easy to read and action packed.

I enjoyed the world, it reminded me of all the tv faves, a bit of Buffy with a bit of True Blood weaved in. It had politics, assassins, hierarchy, and a brooding ancient vampire!

I don’t usually read urban fantasy and this doesn’t have my usual favourite tropes, but it was a great palate cleanser for me and I enjoyed the story.

Nyx was a great character and I’m going to pick up his story of becoming a vampire.

This was an arc read from booksprout and this is my honest review.

Stories told in first person POV by a heroine that is sassy and spunky have always been my favorite. Pagan is the ultimate badass vampire hunter and I was hooked after the very first page. When something happens to her brother (I’m being vague so I don’t give away spoilers) I wanted to throat punch Nyx on Pagan’s behalf (I was emotionally invested by that point) but thankfully things weren’t what they seemed. The author was good at keeping the relationship building between Pagan and Nyx, while the mystery of who wanted her dead unfolded. I’m looking forward to book #2 in this series.

I recieved a ARC copy of this book from BookSirens and write this honost review of my own free will.

This book took me by surprise, liked it more then i thought i would, because its a standalone within a series (first book in the series) and i dont normaly like that type but this one i might follow the whole series.

Love Pagan and Nyx but i also like Alaric, was hard not to.

So as we get in the story one thing stood out to me and that was Pagan herself from the start she didnt feel just human to me and i liked the fact it was not reaveled untill much later big plus there.

The dymenic between Nyx and Pagan is glorious i laughed so much at their interactions they sure know how to keep things interesting.
The more Pagan tries to pull away the harder Nyx pushes loved that.

I didnt mind it so much but Pagan even with all her reasoning against and not wanting to become one she sure didnt give Nyx nearly as much hell as i though she would.. i would of liked her to really go bananas and kick his booty she somehow accepted her fate and rolled with it i suppose theres nothing bad about that tho.

She does seem to have a knack of getting into trouble and somehow she went from kickass fighter to a almost affraid of herself to stand and fight not to sure if i got that right or misunderstood but thats what i got from some of it.

The story in itself i have to say was pretty nice, i did get destracted by Nyx and Pagan and what they was up to but i is interesting for sure and i believe that the main characters focus switches but i think and hope the story baseline continues throughout the series.

I have nothing bad to say about this book and the reason i gave 4 stars is because i cant give half but its a 4.5 stars book to me! And i am thinking of following the series as the books come out 40/60 as of now but that might change later.

If you like vampires & witches also theres shifters and wolves in there along the way. Then i highly suggest grabbing a copy of this beauty!

TL/DR: Did you read the synopsis or did the cover catch your eye? Read it? Great! No? Ok, then I suggest you read my whole review. Otherwise, if you are a fan of Vampires, Vampire Hunters, Witches, pent-up passions, action upon action and learning that not all Vampires are evil (other books have used this trope, I know), I definitely recommend the first book in the Vampires Kingdom world.

Ok, so in all honesty I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this book. First, the cover caught my eye and then the synopsis.

Pagan is a strong FMC who was raised with her brother by a vampire and then became, you guessed it, a vampire hunter. There is a catch though, she only goes after evil vampires. She is paid well and along with the evil vampires she also receives names thought to be connected with her parent’s murder. She has never met her boss, receives her targets via email and stopped doing her own due diligence years ago when all the targets checked the box of evil.

Nyx, the MMC is CENTURIES old and when Pagan is sent to kill him, let’s just say things don’t go as planned. Like at all, for anyone. He is one of my favorite characters in the book but I am afraid if I say anything else, it would include spoilers.

This was a fun, little bit spicy, fairly quick read. The author does a great job creating a rich world filled with vampires, vampire hunters, witches and other supernatural creatures (I won’t spoil it for you). Yes, of course there is a bar. Are you happy now?

If you are a fan of Vampires, Vampire Hunters, Witches who do the right thing, pent-up passions, action upon action and learning that not all Vampires are evil, I highly recommend the first book in the Vampires Kingdom world. I received a copy of the book from BookSirens. My review is voluntary and all opinions are my own. Happy reading!

Pagan is a vampire hunter who was raised by a vampire, Alaric, which gives her an interesting perspective on vampires. Unlike the witches she hunts with, she doesn't think all vampires are evil. When someone she knows is turned, she has to hold fast to that idea, even in the face of danger and violence.

Still obsessed with her parents' deaths and fueled by vengeance, Pagan picks a fight with the second-oldest vampire (and thus, one of the strongest vampires alive). Nyx is that vampire, an ancient man who feels inexplicably drawn to Pagan, and subsequently becomes embroiled in her life, because on top of her desire for retribution, she finds that she has a target on her back and has to fight to survive.

This was a very intense read. I was invested from the start in finding out who was behind the deaths of Pagan and Jason's parents. The worldbuilding was cool.
Witches hunt vampires, indoctrinated from a young age to believe that all vampires are evil husks of the person they used to be, were animals are allied with vampires, and weres are a product of shapeshifters messing around and creating a disease. There were some interesting twists and things that I didn't see coming, which I enjoyed. I hope to read the next book, which will be Alaric's story, and that it will be just as intense and intriguing as this book was.

Oh my goodness if you need a book to completely sweep you away this is it. Conspiracy of Vampires is exactly the kind of gritty urban fantasy I crave. It's high action high steam and thank goodness it rarely slowed down. I tore through it.

The author did an amazing job with the world-building. Everything felt so rich and immersive right away. You are immediately thrown into this supernatural kingdom dealing with a powerful and very dark vampire conspiracy.

The tension between Pagan and Nyx is just fantastic. Pagan is focused completely on vengeance after what happened to her parents and honestly that revenge kept her on edge the whole time. But I was totally captivated by Nyx. His motivation to find atonement for his savage past by becoming a secret protector for other creatures was so much more interesting. We don't get all the answers about his past but what we do see makes you instantly root for him.

And the romance girls the romance! The enemies to lovers dynamic was spot on. The chemistry sizzled instantly but I loved that the author gave us a beautiful slow burn. The forbidden temptation was delicious.

This book is a must read. It's dark compelling and delivers a completely satisfying, action packed story. Get ready to lose a weekend to this one. I am ready for the next book! 💖

I like Nyx, so unapologetic

This is book one in the series The Vampire’s Kingdom. I did not realize that I have read a book in this series. As I was reading, characters became more familiar to me. This book has an interesting storyline. The main characters are human siblings Jason and Pagan (female ) who have some special traits. Their parents were killed and they were rescued by Alaric, a super cool vampire. I read his book first. The siblings do not know why their parents were killed but Pagan is determined to find the vampires that are guilty. She is skilled with knives and escapes but also reckless because she is emotionally and revenge driven. Pagan puts her friends, witches, and her brother Jason in danger on this journey. Pagan will definitely frustrate you as she does her brother Jason, Alaric, Nyx, and Leaden. I like Nyx because he is so unapologetic. The ending closes things somewhat but does lead to the next book. Read On!

Solid middle-of-the-road read

Review: Conspiracy of Vampires: The Vampire’s Kingdom Book 1
By: Miranda Thorn
⭐⭐⭐

This book was a solid read. I’m not sure it's a book I’ll remember after a time, but it was a good read. In the first chapter, you immediately start in the middle of a scene. It almost makes you feel like you're starting a book but missed the beginning. I feel like the character development could have used some work. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters all that much. I liked Nyx’s character but thought we were missing a lot of his backstory & what made him the way he is. There is a second book; however, I'm not sure we’ll get any of Nyx’s backstory in it since
it's about a different couple. You might like this book if you’re into vampires (and other paranormal characters).

I was in a bit of a book rut and this pulled me out.
Pagans story is fast pace and constantly moving. I really enjoyed it starting out in the action, that kept me hooked. She had a rough last and is taking everyone down in her way to find her parents killer. She come to a point in her search were she either needs to switch directions with help or run herself in to death.
There is a bit a romance and some small spicy screams that were delightful.
I’m not a fan of authors switching POVs with out a warning or the characters name to show the change; but it only took a second to grasp who was talking.
I did in joy this book and excited to see what come from her next book.

This was a very enjoyable enemy to lover story to read that's about Pagan a witch and Nyx a vampire. This book starts like most of the movies today a scene to intrigue you then it flashbacks, but we get to know each leading character very well and their motives. They were likable characters and the chemistry between them entrancing. There's lots of action and some romance which kept me engaged while reading. Pagan's parents were killed by vampires and now she hunts them. Nyx is trying to atone from his past violent life and is running a sanctuary for supernatural creatures. When Pagan tracks Nyx down and Nyx invites her into his sanctuary was an engaging story that I'd received a copy and volunteer to review.

This book was a fun read. Vampire hunter vs. one of the strongest vampires in existence. Pagan is tough and stubborn and unwilling to compromise but darn it she's attracted to the vamp she's supposed to kill. She's also obsessed with finding who's responsible for her parent's death. Nyx is an old vampire, and I absolutely loved him. He was strong, but patient. He wants to protect Pagan, and she wants nothing to do with him. He has to work for her affections, and I love how hard he tried. Even with the obstacles in their way, can they overcome them and find love and acceptance? You'll have to read the book to find out.

To read the third in this series, they recommend reading prior books. Since I could get this one for free, I accepted it.

Okay. I did not see this coming. At ALL! There is one thing that I had predicted near the start, so when it happened, I thought, "Well, duh!" Other than that… Mind blown! I tend to place somewhat familiar faces to the characters in a story, and I don't know why, but my brain INSISTED that Nyx was a Satyr… And he's not, so I don't even know where to go with that one, but that says more about ME, than the author. I really enjoyed this one, though. Kept me on the edge of my seat, which I enjoy. I just wish it was a little more steamy, but when you're fighting for your life, there are other priorities.
Now, for Alaric and Kori!

Pagan is a vampire hunter, hunting with vengeance in her heart for her parents being killed by vampires, so a contact sends her the name of a hit, and she’s well paid. But when the contact sends her to take out an ancient vampire named Nyx, she’ll get a lot more than she bargained for.

This is a good first book in this series, with the enemies-to-lovers working well here. Pagan will learn a lot of truths, and Nyx will find himself drawn to Pagan as he never has before. Betrayal, mystery, romance and thriller all rolled into one, and the author doesn’t hold back on the fight scenes, so if readers are turned off by some bloody battles, this isn’t a book for them. But if you are looking for an action packed book with a great cast of characters, this one will fit the bill.

That was an enjoyable little read. Great plot, enjoyed the characters and the lore, it just all happened a bit too fast.

I needed more time as a reader to come to terms with the romance, to be pulled into it. It needed the slow burn, and happening so fast just felt like it made it unbelievable (she says as she reviews as vampire love story, I know). I am always critical when I feel someone should be doubting things and getting sucked in too easily, and with more time and intrigue, it would have felt more organic and genuine.

The plotting itself was great, I was invested, and I'm still keen to read the rest of the series as I'm nosey and I want to know what happens.

Hopefully the series develops as it goes as I think it has alot of potential.

Miranda and I are taking a marketing class together and when she put the blurb for Conspiracy of Vampires out there for a critique, I was hooked. I hate bats but am intrigued by vampires which is another reason it caught my attention.

Conspiracy of Vampires is book one of “The Vampire’s Kingdom” series. The book is action-packed as Pagan Hall, a vampire killer, searches for her parents’ murderer. Discovering that Nyx, a handsome, centuries old vampire might know who did it, Pagan joins forces with Nyx and finds love where she least expected it.

It is full of strong characters and fast paced, and I look forward to reading Bite of Magic, the second in the series.

I really enjoyed this book and binged it within a day. It is engaging but I do have a couple of critiques. I wish that the author had fleshed out the plot line in several areas. The premise is good but a little too simple at times. I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending either. The climatic conclusion of the event that was happening felt lackluster. While it seems like the 2nd book follows a different set of characters, I hope that there are still storylines that will continue to develop with the main characters from this book. All in all, I had a fun time with this one and am starting the next one now!

Mystery and Danger

Hunting the monsters that harmed her family seems to be the only thing that Pagan yearns for, until she meets Nyx. He wants to redeem himself from his past but their paths crossing only place them both in danger. This story was intriguing once you get invested and as the mystery begins to unravel so does the desire to know what is actually going on. This was an interesting and fun read.

Vampire hunter Pagan will do anything to avenge her parents' murder, even go after Nyx, a vampire so scary that even Alaric, the scariest vampire Pagan has met, is scared of him, which considering her profession, said a lot. But Pagan isn't about to let Alaric's fears stand in her way. Conspiracy of Vampires is a paranormal romance full of action, suspense, intrigue, twists, banter, laughs and steam that sucked me in! A fun read! I can't wait to read Kori and Alaric's story next in Bite of Magic, Book 2 of The Vampire's Kingdom trilogy.

I made it a point at the end of 2024 to get back into reading since I hadn't read in quite a while. This book was one of the first books I read fully through within 2 days. The way it flows without me having to stop it due to long drawn out scenes or situations was very nice. I really liked the pacing as well as some scenes and the concepts behind the book, I really look forward to the next books which normally I don't enjoy books that swap main characters between them however due to this one I am very excited however and look forward to writing more reviews as the year goes on.
